HUDDERSFIELD STUDENTS’ UNION 2015–2016 REPORT

DEFINING THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE Huddersfield Students’ Union exists for one purpose, to make student life better. Our mission statement reflects this but more importantly so should our work. That’s why we produce an annual impact report, to provide a snapshot of the work we have done for students through 2015–16. We hope you enjoy reading about our year, and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Mike, Alysia, Sabrina, George and Jordan have had a busy year leading projects, campaigns and services that focus on enhancing the student experience. The team have represented students at over 350 meetings, course re-validations, disciplinary hearings and University committees. Below are a couple of brief campaign highlights from the year:

HRI CAMPAIGN: This year we heard the news of the proposed cuts to the Huddersfield Accident & Emergency services; this was a double blow with the already existing cuts to the University Health Centre. We reacted to the cuts with a full campaign from demonstrations and lobbying MP’s, to writing papers to University Council ensuring that student voices were being heard. We have had great success in being listened to and even held two consultation events on campus for students to raise their concerns with the people making the cuts and addressing how it will affect students directly. We’ve recently found out that the cuts to the University Health Centre will be significantly less than we first thought.

PLAZA REDEVELOPMENT: After years of students trying to avoid getting their feet wet walking across the Plaza, the University are finally redeveloping the site as requested by students via our ‘Big Ideas’ initiative. The new University Square was completed in time for the July graduation ceremonies.
