welcome

Hello! You made it. You’re officially in Huddersfield, it’s Freshers’ Week and oh wow, things are happening fast! We should probably introduce ourselves, right? To put it simply, Huddersfield Students’ Union (that’s us) is a charity based on campus, led by students for students, which exists to make student life better. Although we work closely with the University, we’re a completely independent organisation so this means we’re 100% focused on your interests, concerns and wellbeing.

Whatever takes your fancy – whether it’s joining a sports clubs or society, running a life-changing campaign (or for election!), volunteering in the local community or just having fun at some of our epic events – we’ll be here all year-long to provide you with great services, support and advice on just about everything!

a quick hello!

‘ey up! welcome to huddersfield! Going to university is a big deal to say the least, and with the various events going on for Freshers’ Festival you wouldn’t be alone in feeling overwhelmed. But there’s nothing to worry about!

and film actor Sir Patrick Stewart is from our neighbour Mirfield!

We’ve put together this handy guide so you can get to know the lovely town of Huddersfield, and everything it has to offer! Freshers’ is a great opportunity to meet new people, have a blast and get comfy with uni-life. With our help, we’re sure Freshers’ will make you feel right at home here in Huddersfield.

Huddersfield has everything you need, from brilliant bars, clubs and pubs, to quaint cafes, and plenty of great shops for books, clothes, essentials, and everything in-between! If you’re feeling adventurous, Huddersfield has some beautiful locations to visit – like the serene Castle Hill – and there’s plenty of fun to be had indoors with events like HudQuiz. There’s something for everyone, so you’ll never have a dull time.

If you’re completely unfamiliar with Huddersfield, here’s a few cool facts that might peak your interest. We’re the birthplace of the rugby league, former Prime Minister Harold Wilson, and world-renown stage

So with that out of the way, it’s time to start reading our guide so you’re prepared for everything that comes with freshers’ life – including all the fantastic free stuff! – the SU

come and meet your officers! Hello and a big welcome to Huddersfield from your Student Officers! Our team is made up of five full-time elected students that have taken a year out to lead the Students’ Union. Here in Hudds, there’s a President and four supporting Officers, and together they represent your views to both the University and the wider community.

As they’ve all been through the same student experiences you have (or rather, will soon have), they’re the ideal people to get in touch with if you want to chat about, well, anything. The team’s roles cover everything from student activities to campaigns, and academic issues to wellbeing advice – be sure to pop up to the Students’ Union to say ‘hi’ if you get a chance!

A quick look at our services Get involved University life is full of opportunities, and it’s a chance to socialise with people that will become lifelong friends. It might seem daunting at first, but you won’t regret making an effort to go out and experience new things with new people. The Students’ Union has something for everyone, so you’ll always feel at home.

student voice We’re led by students, for students. Getting involved by standing for election and representing your fellow students will give the SU the strength it needs to ensure student life is the best it can be. No matter how much time you have there’s always a way you can get involved.

8

our services

societies, sports and student media The SU is home to a variety of student-led sports clubs and societies which we help to fund. These aren’t just a great opportunity to have some fun; they’re also a chance for you to step up and take on leadership roles in the things you care about most, and even represent Huddersfield in national tournaments like ‘BUCS’. Find out more by going to page 12 for societies and page 14 for sports clubs.

HUDDERSFIELD.SU Volunteering

hudlets

We’re not just about improving your life while you’re studying, we also aim to make sure you’re prepared for life after University with a cracking CV to boot. It’s for this reason we provide a vast range of volunteering opportunities through our dedicated volunteering webpage. From event supporter to elderly befriender – there’s something to suit everyone.

We run a comprehensive Advice Centre, offering free, confidential and impartial advice on a range of matters ranging from academic to housing and financial. Our advisers take the time to talk students through their options and help them explore what their next steps might be.

Need to pick up some basic essentials? Well, the SU Shop has you covered! Located right in the heart of campus at Student Central, the SU Shop has everything from snacks, lunch deals, stationary, toiletries, clothing, and all at affordable prices. Any money spent in the SU Shop goes right back into providing all the fantastic Students’ Union services for you, so it’s a win-win!

Sorting out accommodation can seem like a scary task, which is why HudLets exists. Solely for students at the University, HudLets is an SU-run letting agency that works with halls of residence, private landlords and a selection of agencies to make sure all students have access to high quality and fairly-priced accommodation. societies and student media About societies

radiohud

Most students heading to university who play sport already know exactly what they want to do when they get here, but what if you don’t? No worries, that’s where societies come in!

Are you the next Scott Mills? A budding musician? Or just want your playlist blaring through Student Central to get you through the day? RadioHud is the sound of student life on campus, and they’re here to arrange amazing music events alongside showcasing fresh talent on their airwaves all year round. You’ll find them in their dedicated studio on Floor 5 of Student Central (opposite the SU). Want more info? Visit radiohud.co.uk

We have everything from an Assassin’s Guild to Quidditch (yep), and the medieval re-enacting Historia Normannis to Cuppas & Cocktails! Even if you’re just looking for like-minded people to help with your studies, we’ve got plenty of academic-based societies that are ready and waiting to help maximise your potential.

make your own

T’hud

Think we’re missing something, or maybe you have the best idea (ever) for a society and would like to set one up yourself? No problem, we’ll talk you through how it works and support you all the way. To meet all our fantastic societies, head on down to the Freshers’ and ReFreshers’ fairs or visit huddersfield.su/activities

T’Hud is the University of Huddersfield’s student-led magazine. It’s written, edited and printed entirely by students, for students. Alongside their awesome editions each year, they also have a dedicated website for all the latest gossip on and off campus. They’re always looking for writers or people to help out behind the scenes, so check out t-hud.co.uk

HudTV HudTV is one of our fastest growing societies, winning ‘Most Improved Society’ at our annual SU Awards this year. Are you itching to get on camera or an expert behind the scenes? Join HudTV to cover all the biggest events on campus and produce exciting content for the students of Huddersfield. Find out more at huddersfield.su/hudtv

We’ve got a huge range of student-led sports clubs which represent every corner of the sporting world, including American Football, Badminton, Cricket, Snow Sports, and more! With this amazing selection there’s bound to be something you’ll love. The Students’ Union is home to over 30 sports clubs, with a mix of recreational clubs, competitive clubs, or something in-between. So whether you’re looking for a way to just have some casual fun or want to really dive into a competitive sports scene, we’re sure you’ll find the perfect club for you. The ma jority of our clubs participate in their respective university, national and regional leagues, with over 25 of these competing under the banner of ‘BUCS’ – British University and Colleges Sport.

16

sports clubs and varsity

We’re always proud to see our teams win, but it’s not all about competing – you might just want to have some fun and meet some new friends! It doesn’t matter how experienced or inexperienced you are; our sports clubs welcome everyone who wants to participate. Freshers’ Fair is a great chance to show your interest, and you can also head along to one of the many Give It A Go sessions being held in the weeks following Freshers’. Joining a sports club isn’t just good for your wellbeing, it’s also the perfect opportunity to have fun, discover new interests, be a part of studentled activities, and meet some great people! If you think there’s something missing from our list of clubs, you can come see us in the Students’ Union (Floor 5, Student Central) and set up your own!

Huddersfield.su/activities varsity Varsity is the Students’ Union’s biggest annual sports competition against our local rivals at the University of Bradford, with more than 2000 students going head-tohead both on and off the pitch. The Varsity event has a rich 28year history and has grown with an ever-increasing number of students getting involved, and attracting bigger audiences – raising the stakes between the two competing sides. The principles remain the same; 20+ teams compete across

16+ disciplines for one point each in the overall standings. This instils the ethos of Varsity which is all about good sportsmanship, teamwork, and pride in the University. Bradford took the title from us (boo!) in the last dramatic Varsity held in March 2016 – could you be one of our future champions when we take it back in 2017? Stay posted for details on a week of events you won’t want to miss!

Volunteering Getting involved in volunteering while you’re studying is not only fun and rewarding, but it will serve you well in gaining those extra skills and experiences that will make you stand out from the crowd once you graduate. Volunteering is a great opportunity to pick up a range of skills that you may not get while sitting in a lecture. These include leadership, team work, adaptability and initiative. Volunteering is the perfect way for you to get experience whilst having a great time, and even making friends along the way.

BROKERAGE SERVICE The Students’ Union runs a brokerage service where we check and advertise a range of volunteering projects from local and national charities. The charities we work with include Cancer Research UK, Yorkshire Children’s Centre, Age UK and Yorkshire Air Ambulance. The opportunities range from weekly

The process for applying is very simple and you can do it all through the Students’ Union website, by going to huddersfield.su/volunteering. If you have any questions about the volunteering service and how to get involved, feel free to email volunteering@hud.ac.uk.

VOLUNTEERING EVENTS We have lots of great opportunities this year, such as Student Volunteering Week and the Students at the Heart of Hud initiative. Everything from animal care to DIY and gardening in the local community is covered, with places always available for those of you who want to get stuck in and add value to your CV. For more information on Student Volunteering Week and everything else we have going on, visit huddersfield.su/volunteering.

MONEY SAVING TIPS

FOR FIRST TIME FRESHERS’

1. Cook Your Own Meals.

It’s easy and cheap to make sandwiches the night before or even get a flask for soups or stews, and buying your own ingredients for meals is a cheaper alternative to takeaways and ready-meals.

2. Cut Down.

Is there a subscription service you don’t really use? Cancel it for a few extra quid every month. If you’re a smoker, cutting down or quitting could save you hundreds or thousands of pound a year!

3. Secondhand.

Rather than buying brand new books, films, clothes or whatnot, buy them secondhand in local shops or online for a fraction of the price.

4. Discounts.

Students have access to a ton of discounts, so make sure you use them! You can also get an NUS Extra card which offers loads of discounts for all kinds of places for up to three years!

5. Save.

You never know what life’s going to throw at you, so it’s always a good idea to keep some money saved up. You might miss it, but you’ll be thanking yourself when something happens and you’re prepared to deal with it.

Discounts — get an NUS Extra card!

8. Amazon Student.

All students can get Amazon Prime for free for six months with Amazon’s student programme, which gives you free one-day delivery on Prime items as well as access to Amazon Video.

9. Shop Smart.

Buying store-branded products rather than premium brands can cut prices in half or more. Don’t shy away from places like Aldi and Lidl!

6. Phone Insurance.

If you have a pricey smartphone you should consider insuring it in case of any unfortunate accidents – especially if you know you’re clumsy! Phone insurance can be pretty cheap, and you’ll thank yourself for getting it.

7. Get a 16-25 Railcard

A railcard can get you a third off your normal ticket prices. If you plan on getting the train frequently (or even infrequently!) a Railcard is a no-brainer.

OR MAKE SOME CASH FROM YOUR OLD ONES To sell: Drop off your textbooks at the Students’ Union Helpdesk until 12:00pm on Monday 26th September To buy: The sale is happening in the Students’ Union on Floor 5, Student Central on Wednesday 28th September from 10:00am — 3:00pm
