Nearby Beaches
We have some beautiful beaches right here on our doorstep, you will be spoilt for choice
East Looe Beach - Easily accessible, great for swimming and close to all the facilities (there is a beach wheelchair available for visitors – ask at the Tourist Information Centre). Hannafore Beach - Located on West Looe side, a mainly shingle beach with spectacular views of the channel. A brilliant beach for rock pooling. Great facilities plus a putting green and tennis courts.
Talland Bay - A public footpath passes through the Tencreek touring field and leads to Talland Bay. Facilities at the beach include toilets, cafe and car park. Access to Talland Bay is by narrow lanes, which can prove annoying in the busier months, but once there, the beach is easily reached from the car park. Polperro Beach – A sandy beach below the harbour wall when the tide is out. Park in the car park at the top of the village and wander through the shops to the harbour.
LOOE
TENCREEK WEST LOOE
PAGE 35
Lansallos Beach - Is a 15 minutes walk or so from the village of Lansallos or park in the National Trust car park. A secluded sandy beach, it is quiet and peaceful, but there are no amenities here. Lantic Bay - Situated along the Polperro to Polruan road, 2 or 3 miles from Polperro. Look for the signpost to Pencarrow Head from which a 20 minute walk to the cliff top gives a view of the bay used in years past by smugglers.Access down to the beach is by 2 paths, both steep, and with the cliff top 400 feet above sea level, it can be very sheltered even with a strong offshore breeze. The beach has no amenities. Millendreath Beach – A sandy beach that can be reached via the coast path or park in the pay and display car park by the beach. Facilities close by make this a lovely beach to visit with the family. Seaton Beach – A large sand and shingle beach 5 miles east of Looe with easy access and safe bathing. Floats and deckchairs are available for hire, with a shop, bar and pub nearby and cafe and toilets on the beach.
Downderry Beach - A wide straight beach made up of shingle and sand. The easiest access point to the sands is by the Inn on the Shore, situated right on the beach. Downderry is popular for long beach walks, windsurfing, swimming and beach fishing. Portwrinkle - Can be reached by taking the signposted lane off the B3247. Here there is an old harbour with a beach of grey sand and stones. No amenities here, and more suitable for fishing than bathing. Whitsand Bay - A 4 mile stretch of sand which is very attractive. However, it must be noted that it is a dangerous beach with many fatalities. Voluntary lifeguards are present only at weekends. Access is down over cliff paths with the beach falling very steeply into the sea, proving dangerous for bathing, but ideal for fishing. There are no facilities on the beach, although there are some at the top of the cliffs. Dog friendly beaches
PAGE 36
Beach Safety
By following our safety tips below, you will be sure of having a relaxed and enjoyable holiday.
On the Beach: DO read and obey warning notices DO bathe within any patrolled areas DO obey the lifeguard’s advice DON’T bathe when the RED FLAG is flying In the Sea: Always swim in the company of others Don’t swim; - if you feel unwell or cold or tired - for at least an hour after meals/alcohol Children can drown in shallow water - watch them continuously Inflatables are dangerous in the sea
The sea bottom is not flat - the waves may sweep the sand from under your feet You can’t see the currents that carry you away
The sea is usually cold, even on a warm day - remember, cold can kill Do not snorkel in rough seas or if you have breathing problems Beware of being trapped by an incoming tide
If you get into difficulties: Remain calm and do not exhaust yourself Float on your back Attract attention by waving one arm and shouting for help Swim diagonally across, or float and go with the current
Bewar e of the unexpe cted:
If someone else gets into difficulty:
Contact a lifeguard (if available) Dial 999 and ask for the coastguard - then stay by the telephone. Use rescue equipment, but enter the water only if you are a strong swimmer
PAGE 37
Responsible Crabbing: • Use a bait bag, NOT A HOOK.
• Maximum of 3 crabs per bucket, return any fighting crabs. • Change the water every 10 minutes and keep your bucket in the shade. • Gently return any caught crabs to the sea. • Take all gear and litter with you when you have finished.
Happy crabbing

WALK INTO LOOE Walking on the main road into Looe is very dangerous. A much safer route is to turn right out of the park entrance, turn right again staying on the country lane, and then take the immediate left by the small triangle of grass signposted to the town centre. Keep on this lane downhill all the way to West Looe. The walk will take about 25 minutes. When you get to the river turn left to go over the bridge into East Looe and the Beach or right to go up towards Hannafore (this becomes the coastal path to Polperro). If the tide is in look out for the passenger ferry across the river. THE LOOE-POLPERRO COASTAL PATH The path to the coast runs through the edge of the park. Turn left out of the reception, cross the touring park until you reach the line of tourers along the back hedge. Follow the hedge until you see the maintenance building. Two touring caravans before this building you will see a gate in the hedge. Through the gate and across a couple of fields you will meet the lane. Down hill from here you will arrive at Talland Bay and the coastal path. The walk to here is approximately 20 minutes.Once at Talland, Looe is to the East (allow 11/2 hours ) and Polperro to the West (allow 2 hours). These are beautiful walks along the Cornish coast with spectacular views.
TENCREEK TO LOOE VIA KILMINORTH WOODS This is the slow way to Looe but very pleasant all the same. Leave the Park by the main entrance turning left. Walk along the lane until you reach the main road. Cross the main road and continue up the lane and down, which will bring you to Kilminorth Woods (a nature reserve). Here you have the choice of walking through the woods to Looe (main car park) or continuing along the lane to Watergate. Watergate is situated on the river, so from here, you can walk downstream to Looe. Depending on the route time would vary but allow 11/2 hours. If you like walking we recommend you take a look at this App - 253 walks in Cornwall, ranging from 2 to 10 miles. Nearly all of them are circular. Walks can be purchased for ÂŁ1.99 via the app which guides you around the route using GPS.
PAGE 42
Looe & Polperro . . .
The closest town to Tencreek is Looe, a bustling seaside village where you can still see boats land their catch on the quayside. Looe is divided into two towns, East Looe and West Looe, facing each other across the river, joined by Looe bridge built in 1855.
East Looe is the busier of the two towns, with narrow streets from which traffic is prohibited during the summer months. Before exploring it is best to park in the Millpool car park which can be found a few hundred yards out of town on the Polperro road. Along the quay a good hour or so can be spent watching fishing boats unload, and sharks being weighed. Looe is the headquarters of the Shark Angling Club of Great Britain. Anyone
Watch t fishing he boats unload their c atch
inspired enough can try their hand at fishing with self-drive boats for hire, together with skippered boats taking anglers out to catch mackerel, conger and sharks. In the town itself are numerous shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs, which lead to the seafront, beach and pier. On the other side of the river is West Looe, which can be reached either by the bridge or via a passenger ferry which punts from side to side depending on the state of the tide.
PAGE 43
itely Defin th wor ! it a vis
Polperro, 4 miles from Looe, is more famous for its fishing and smuggling than bathing, but is definitely worth a visit, if only to savour the atmosphere created by generations gone by. Car parking, as with Looe, is prohibited in the village itself and, with the streets and lanes being so narrow, the car park at the top of the village makes good sense. After parking here you can wander through the shops to the harbour where, in the last century a crew of customs officers were stationed
on a boat as a measure against smuggling. From either side of the harbour, the South West Coast path takes you back to Looe or on to Lantic Bay. Before walking on, make sure you look back to enjoy the bird’s eye view of Polperro, one of the most scenic and photographed views in Cornwall.

Lanhydrock
Cotehele Cotehele was the ancestral home to the Edgcumbe family for centuries. The Tudor house, perched high above the River Tamar, is decorated with tapestries, arms and armour. Outside, explore the formally planted terraces, or lose yourself in the Valley Garden, which includes a medieval stew pond and dovecote and leads down to the river. Run by the National Trust and located near St Dominic, Saltash. Open weekdays from 11am - 6pm, April to end of October. Tintagel Castle Situated on the north coast, Tintagel is a medieval castle on an isolated premontory, high above the sea and is renowned for being the legendary home of King Arthur. Legend apart, Tintagel is still amongst the most spectacular places in Cornwall to visit.
Lanhydrock Situated just outside Bodmin, Lanhydrock was once in the possession of the great priory of St Petroc at Bodmin, until the dissolution of the monasteries in 1620. The estate was purchased by Sir Richard Robartes, but it was Sir Gilbert Scott who, from 1857, laid out the beautiful gardens of today. Now run by the National Trust, Lanhydrock is open weekdays from 11am - 6pm, April to the end of October.

History of Looe Archaeological evidence such as the so called “Giants Hedge” an ancient earthwork running between the Looe and Fowey estuaries indicated that the area around Looe (Logh in Cornish) was inhabited as early as 1000BC. It is thought to have been built in the 6th century by a local chieftain to defend his territory against neighbouring clans. Patches of the “Giants Hedge” still survive as an earth bank 2 metres high. The Stone Circle at Bin Down (from the
Cornish “Bin Dun” meaning “Hill Fort”) also dates from this period. East and West Looe originated as separate towns, separated by the estuary. They were first mentioned in 1201. An early wooden bridge over the Looe River was in place by 1411. This burnt down and was replaced by the first stone bridge with 14 arches completed in 1436 and featuring a chapel dedicated to St Anne in the middle. This bridge was demolished and replaced in 1853 by the current bridge about 100 yards further upstream.

A work ing fishing port, popula r with visitor s
Some time before 1144 a monastic order began using Looe Island, and built a chapel there. The monks may have provided a rudimentary lighthouse service using beacons. Another chapel sat opposite on the mainland at Hannafore, just outside of West Looe. Both chapels are now marked only by ruins and have recently featured on Channel 4’s “Time Team”. In the 18th and 19th centuries smuggling, along with fishing and boat building was a major industry in Cornwall. Looe Island was an ideal staging post for landing and concealing goods until it was safe to ferry them to the mainland.
The Looe-Liskeard Union Canal was built in 1828 enabling the efficient transport of copper, tin and granite from the moors to the thriving port. The industrial success necessitated the building of the large quay at East Looe in 1860. Due to the demands of the shipping trade the canal was no longer able to keep up with demand, and a railway line was built along the towpath. The railway began carrying passengers in 1879. The 20th century with the Victorian fashion for seaside holidays saw Looe become a tourist town. This trend continued until we have the successful tourist town of Looe as seen today.

Medium and Large Seasonal Pitches come with electric hook ups or Hardstanding Pitches come complete with water and drainage hook ups (black and grey). This period is much cheaper than the summertime but usage is restricted to Friday pm to Sunday pm and also the school holidays.
