THE HISTORY OF LUCKY ME. Back in the 80s local leaders like Bob Cargill and Bob Eitelman had the big idea that if they could get folks to paste a green bumper sticker on their cars – Lucky Me, I Live in Longview – they could generate community pride and maybe drive a little new attention from around the area to the prospects of Longview. Folks like Natalie Rabicoff and others helped promote the idea and anecdotes indicate that green bumper sticker with the little 4-leaf clover traveled all over the southwest. Good ideas are hard to keep down.
L CKY ME! I LIVE IN LONGVIEW. There are countless reasons why people love living in Longview. To name a few, the weather is mild, the schools are outstanding and offer a variety of college bound and technology options, cost of living is way below national average, and everything a family needs for good, safe fun is within a short drive. Good, tame stuff, right? But what makes people feel great, like they’re the luckiest people in East Texas?

THE RABBIT’S FOOT In some cultures, the foot of a rabbit is carried as an amulet believed to bring good luck. This belief is held by individuals in a great number of places around the world, including Europe, China, Africa, and North and South America.
From Allyson Bock, in her words: “I have visited many states and several countries over my lifetime, and consider myself very social and open to new ways of life and cultures. However, when I’ve been approached about moving I feel a deep, empty pit in my stomach. It’s not just because of comfort and familiarity, but because I love this wonderful city and its people.
Because of the support of BancorpSouth, I was able to participate in the Chamber’s Leadership Longview Program and I am a proud member of the 2013-2014 class. Leadership Longview was an amazing and eye-opening program, even for someone who thought I knew pretty much all about Longview. MORE GREEN PLEASE!
WHEN FEEDBACK WAS RECEIVED DURING SURVEYS OF THE CITY OF LONGVIEW’S COMPREHENSIVE PLAN, ONE SIMPLE PLEA WAS PUNCTUATED:
Give us more green spaces! Turns out the people of Longview love living, playing, and working around nature. With Longview’s deep roots buried in a soil that’s prime with emollients, our dirt is some of the richest in the state. Water tables aren’t a problem due to the long-reaching arms of the Sabine River. On top of that, we have trees that go back generations, making a canopy over Longview that is the envy of cities in dry, barren counties due west. Combine community input with a vast natural resource and this city is on the cusp of becoming one of the pure garden treasures west of the Mississippi.

Grassroots funding from the people of Gregg County for a park that honors, well, the grass roots. The City of Longview has deeded 26 acres of trees, hills, and meadow along Grace Creek adjacent to Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Center, to be the newest and grandest in the city’s public park spaces. All it takes to turn that papery plan into something that can be walked through and touched is money, about $5,000,000, all total. To make a cultivated arboretum come to life takes careful planning, private funding gifts, and a keen eye to the weather patterns that best suit digging in the dirt. The Longview Arboretum and Nature

The Green, a public-private partnership, sits at the juncture of Texas Highway 31 and South Street, a nine-acre spot that will host learning nodes, pavilions, and public spaces for food trucks. Thanks to a generous financial contribution from the Longview Economic Development Corporation, a new rush of capital is being directed to one of the best hike and bike trail systems in East Texas. With hike and bike trails a big asset in Longview, connecting the paved trails is a way to connect Longview-ites to each other. beginning to put down roots It’s with much anticipation that nature lovers of all walks of life look forward to the Longview Arboretum and Nature Center’s opening.
Long a wooded, overgrown area along Grace Creek, a tributary for the Sabine River, the 26 acres adjacent to Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Center are rich in a variety of indigenous plants to East Texas. As a matter of fact, experts from Stephen F. Austin State University and the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center have walked the hills and meadows proclaiming this land some of the most perfectly situated as a cultivated city park. “Cultivated” being the key word. Volunteers, otherwise known as Friends of the Longview Arboretum, and board members of the non-profit that guides the private development and fundraising, see this public/private partnership as a great fit for Longview citizens. Much like how the Ft. Worth Botanical Gardens has taken a woodsy section of land along the Trinity River and turned it into an oasis of peaceful pursuits, so is the plan for Longview’s Arboretum and Nature Center. Smaller in dimensions, and still in the earliest stages of cultivation, this park will offer walking trails, learning nodes, a pier-styled pavilion for concerts and weddings, formal gardens, meadows, cultivated woods, and

As fundraising continues, there are plans for a multiuse Nature Center that can double and sometimes retrofit to function as offices, gift shop, catering outlet, meeting space, event space, and classrooms. To introduce the concept of an Arboretum to Longview, several “Peek” events have happened, and more are on the way, leading to the first phase of the park and walking trails, which hope to open to the public in summer 2017.

Horaney ’s , Inc. Celebrates 77 Year th
In 1940 Harry and Lorene Horaney opened a feed store in Downtown Longview at 207 N. Court. Horaney’s quickly became a community gathering place. The business grew, evolving out of its rural heritage, and carrying new merchandise to keep pace with the changing society. The store began to attract homeowners as well as farmers, and Horaney’s Feed Store flourished. Albert, Harry’s son, married Betty Barkett of Marshall in 1958, and together they worked with Harry until Harry’s death in 1977. Albert relocated the store to a larger and more modern building at 301 W. Methvin. Today it remains the same friendly store it was in 1940. In 1996 Albert Horaney died, and as a tribute to his memory, the City of Longview changed the name of Court Street to Horaney Street. Betty, like Albert and his father Harry
has enjoyed helping many people over the years, never wanting recognition. Today Betty Horaney continues the business. Customers still come downtown to browse, shop, have a cup of coffee and visit, and find a large supply of birdfeeders, birdhouses, fountains, plants, chemicals, organic products, sprayers, garden seeds, farm supplies, horse supplies, tools, cattle feeders, wire, and an endless array of other items. Giving back to the community for all the goodness shown the family, Betty is active in many worthwhile projects in town. It is Betty Horaney’s hope that the Horaney business will continue, keeping the family tradition alive in Longview. “God has blessed me,” she says, “not only with my family, but with my customers and the many friends I have made throughout the years through this wonderful business.”

y heart is often struck by overwhelming thought, The opportunity I’ve been given by those who bravely sought, To live in this wonderful country with the freedom it entails, By men and women who sacrificed for all our gains and fails. Our country is not perfect as those who came back will be sure, Standing tall beside our flag with all they had to endure. Away from home and family they went, no tears will ever repay, But I stand by their gift with sadness and thanks, and will not forget to pray. Let me not forget to appreciate as I should, Your part in my life I’ll remember, as truly your bravery stood.
With heartfelt thanks to those who have served our country and it’s red, white, and blue, who have allowed us all the freedoms and opportunities in this beautiful city and nation! ~ Chris Hagstrom, East Texas Lawn Care

Longview Regional Medical Center Longview Regional Medical Center was founded in the 1980s by local doctors with passion and a vision for the future of healthcare in our community. Longview Regional has grown extensively and stands as a notable regional medical center offering many advanced procedures close to home for the East Texas community. In 2013 Longview Regional completed its largest expansion, nearly doubling capacity for patient care. www.longviewregional.com
Recently, the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) published “Overall Quality Ratings” for each hospital in our country. The rating was based on patient outcome data and other quality metrics as well as patient satisfaction (measured by patient surveys). Each hospital received a Star Rating 1 to 5 (with 5 being the best). Only 22% of hospitals nationally received a 4 or 5 Star rating. Longview Regional was among that 22% and the only hospital in Longview with a 4-Star rating. • Longview Regional is frequently cited as a Top Performer by peer review magazines and criteria services. LRMC provides top-level medical care to the community, striving for excellence every single day on every single hall, sometimes in less than 30 minutes. • LRMC has attained and sustained excellence in the measures of heart attack care, pneumonia, and surgical care. • LRMC also receives Top Performer ratings based on their increased healthy outcomes for patients with certain conditions including children’s asthma, stroke, venous thromboembolism, perinatal care, inpatient psychiatric services, and immunizations. CORE - The Center for Rehabilitation Excellence CORE has helped rehabilitate many Longview workers who have faced job-related injuries, as well as offering physical therapy to assist patients recovering from sports injuries, common injuries, speech therapy, and the natural results of aging. In its concern for the ongoing recovery and general health of the Longview community, CORE offers a program called WorkSTEPS, an analysis of the physical requirements of a worker’s job and his ability to complete them at a specific job site, plus customizing therapy regimes for non-work related issues. CORE assists patients on site with multiple therapy venues, including water therapy, or can customize a format for its clients that not only returns them to work, but also evaluates the physical demands of their job and the necessary physical therapy programs required to keep them working safely. A 20-Year Long-Range Plan with Choices to be Made

ith the momentum of the City of Longview’s 2015 Comprehensive Plan gaining traction in community awareness and city government, it’s important to appreciate that this is a “living” plan. As with most living things, a certain amount of maintenance is required to see it thrive, and that’s what hit the pavement in the summer of 2016.

Two small-area plans were funded and implemented to take the lofty ideas of an overview and apply them to the nuts and bolts of how our city currently operates. City council added members to an appointed, resident-driven oversight committee, and hired Freise-Nichols consultants to go door-to-door, street-by-street, and analyze key data: from automobile traffic to market rents in the key corridor of the heart of Longview, the downtown district, and the front door to the city, what’s commonly known as the I-20 corridor.
“People love downtown and want to see it thrive. The input will help focus on a marketplace for what will drive people downtown. Also, the small area plan will help tie several areas together— some contain historic buildings and structures—and historic preservation is key. It will help generate a look and feel that is authentic to Longview.” Dale A. Lunsford, Ph.D

This small-area plan also expands the area of emphasis from the primary “100 Acres of Heritage” that demarcates the original city footprint for historic Longview and includes the bordering areas that allow more independently owned businesses to participate in the process.

Some of the focus already is on creating an identity that will reveal that Downtown Longview is fun. With three museums, a variety of restaurants and bars, retail shops, a few lofts, and affordable rents, it’s always changing, creating momentum that draws folks back to a walkable city center. Much like the cube grid of downtown is key to future growth, so is the linear I-20 corridor. A small-area plan has been funded to study how the community enters its front door and what they do along the way to other destinations within the city. This connector is the main artery for bringing out-of-towners into the city and area leaders want to see intentional development directed into this corridor, not only for appearance and viability, but for long-term property values and vibrancy. Longview is extremely accessible from I-20 and US Highways 80 and 259, not to mention what might happen when the I-69 corridor is completed. Community leaders want to see entry points reflect the forward energy and direct drivers through town in an efficient and attractive manner, and also bring them to the city center. Downtown Longview is not just the heart of the city: it’s the spoke of the wheel that turns Longview. Planning wisely is a significant element of all cities that the Chamber of Commerce has visited in the last few years as they lead the clarion call for intentional growth. Kelly Hall, president of the Chamber of Commerce, is one of the upper echelon Texas Chamber leaders who not only sees value in these Inter-City visits, but advocates that the learning experience can translate both to a citywide visioning process, and also assist local business owners with valuable networking and learning models.
How Pokémon Go Brought Hundreds to Downtown Thanks to the ingenuity of Melida Heien working with the folks at Google Maps, Downtown Longview benefited from a sudden influx of Pokémon Go hunters during the summer. The number one takeaway was the priceless value of collaboration, and not in an idealistic way, but in a put-down-competitive-swords-andlink-arms to-make-better-things-happen-forthe-region way. It was stunning to witness hospitals, universities, utility companies, and government entities that usually would be

collaboration efforts led by the Evansville mayor, the Chamber of Commerce, and city leaders, their city is seeing a major influx of downtown development, new construction from tip to toe, and a medical school bringing various hospitals together in one major economic initiative.
Because they too have been on this same journey of discovery in moving a small city to a new level of regional economic vitality, the delegation of Longview leaders (31, and many under the age of 40) saw how the leaders in Evansville implemented walkability, green space, improved utility and water sewage issues, and very real human needs for those who live in the city center.
Bringing back these big ideas was the easy part — almost every person in the delegation saw the potential for Longview. Translating the ideas into Arboretum development, new connective trails, infill solutions, and collaborative efforts here is the challenge we all need to rise up and embrace.

Infrastructure Residents, commuters and visitors have several means to access the area. One Interstate freeway and two U.S. highways run through the City of Longview, and in addition, four Texas state highways also converge in Longview. Two Texas state highway spurs serve to connect highways in Longview and are one of the components that make travel in the city so convenient.
Interstate 20 is an east/west freeway that connects Longview to Dallas, approx. 125 miles (201 km) to the west and to Shreveport, Louisiana, approx. 60 miles (97 km) to the east. U.S. Highway 80 runs through the central district of Longview. U.S. Hwy 80 was once a coast to coast highway from Tybee Beach near Savannah, Georgia and ran continuously across the southern part of the United States to San Diego, California. Today its western terminus is Dallas, Texas, making the length only 1,032 miles (1,661 km).
U.S. Highway 259 is a 250-mile (400 km) north/south spur route connecting U.S. 59 from Nacogdoches, Texas and U.S. 59 near the Oklahoma/Arkansas border just south of Fort Smith, Arkansas. Before Interstate 20, US 259 went through the center of Longview on a route that now is designated Texas State Highway 31 and Spur 502.

THANK YOU! FOR MAKING

GREAT by Kimberly Fish
The Chamber of Commerce loves its members. Not only has the Chamber taken its role as advocate seriously — to the point of establishing networks to monitor local, state, and national policy — but it’s also raising awareness to champion a pro-business profile as Longview grows forward. The Chamber is a resource center; a training facility for community leaders; it inspires workforce development; and it elevates the voice of employers in building better talent in East Texas. All this, plus it provides a customized network for Chamber investors through regular communications, e-newsletters, and programming opportunities. The Longview Chamber of Commerce is a key in the positive strategy emerging in Longview’s business community.

But, what they might do best, is give back. Last year, the Chamber launched Operation Thank You during some of the hottest weeks of the summer with the point being to thank each and every Chamber member — in person! It took more than 150 volunteers to assemble gifts and deliver bags to the long list of Chamber investors. This huge task was done because the Chamber values its members, and knows that these hardworking business leaders are the very people working hard to make Longview great. A thank you is hardly enough, but it’s a beginning in understanding what
In building a healthy and thriving business community, it’s important to remember that without talent there’s no growth. Getting involved with the local ISDs and higher education outlets was a big focus for the Chamber in 2016 and will continue to be a key priority going forward. Partnering with LeTourneau University, University of Texas at Tyler Longview Center, Kilgore College, and East Texas Technical Institute, and finding ways to help them attract and retain students, is central to the Chamber’s business profile. If the emerging workforce is well-educated and secure, the local business community will see results.

Longview and Gregg County have as bright a future as any in the state. The business community understands the need to get involved and drive transformation. In June of 2016, business leaders joined with the Governor’s Tri-Agency Forum in Tyler to hear from members of the Texas Workforce Commission, Texas Education Agency, and Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. This eye-opening forum inspired the Chamber to produce an “Every Child Has Access” handbook for educators, parents, and the Longview Business Community. Longview is growing stronger every year. Your Chamber is thankful to be a key contributor to this success. With breakfast meetings, mixers, and networking events hosted day and night, the Longview Chamber of Commerce is the pro-business connector for growing good things in Longview.
A SPECIAL “THANK YOU!” TO PAUL ANDERSON Paul’s career at the Longview Chamber of Commerce ended, in its official capacity, in December 2016, bringing 22 years of engagement with the Chamber to a successful conclusion. Paul was hired to manage the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, merging with the Longview Partnership in 1994, and he created a one-stop-shop for visitor information and services. Paul has been key in attracting large and small conventions to the city. He later became the Main Street Manager, helping the downtown district recertify as an official Texas Main Street, bringing with it incentives and funding assistance to improve the facades of downtown businesses. He went on to become the Executive Vice President and Communications Director for the Chamber, helping to expand ways the Chamber communicates to members and the community through print publications, website, and e-newsletters. Paul has also been an enormous contributor to the production of Uniquely Longview magazine, and he will be missed.
