Letter from the JLL President 2015-16 As the 2015-2016 League Year comes to a close and the 2016-2017 League Year moves forward in full force, I want to take a moment to reflect on all our League accomplished this year. Without a doubt, I can say our League is a force to be reckoned with in the Longview community. I believe our league has shown our dedication to eradicating poverty on one hand, and, on the other hand, we have given and continue to give women the training they need to be leaders. Through our signature projects—Helping Hands, Done in a Day, Motivate to Move, Kids in the Kitchen, School Supply Train, and Read As One—our members have touched the lives of men, women, and children. We have served meals, encouraged first generation college students, read with children at the Boys and Girls’ Club, helped with Habitat for Humanity, provided backpacks and school supplies to thousands of children, and the list could continue. Each year, I am truly amazed by how much we can accomplish in such a short period of time. Our impact in the community goes beyond just our signature projects. With the start of the Poverty Conference, we brought together community partners to begin to build a coalition of people dedicated to addressing poverty. Our sustainers once again provided numerous students with scholarships. As a League, we successfully completed our first year under our new governance management leadership model. Additionally, we adopted AJLI’s Community Impact Model and began the process of examining the impact our projects currently make. What a busy, exciting year! I am honored and humbled to have led such an outstanding group of women this year, and I look forward to watching our League continue to expand and impact the Longview community in the years to come.

My Best,

Taylor Clark Taylor Clark JLL President, 2015-2016

Letter from the JLL President 2016-17 Welcome fellow Junior League members and supporters to our new year! I am honored to serve along side each of you as we roll up our sleeves to make a meaningful impact in our community. Someone recently asked me what my favorite thing about the Junior League was. I was quick to answer: “the members of the Junior League.” I continue to be surprised and amazed at what can be accomplished by our members when we work together. Last year we dreamed about taking over and continuing the Poverty Conference but in initial conversations had concerns whether we could tackle such a large undertaking. I am proud to report in October 2015, we hosted the Poverty Conference held at the LeTourneau University Belcher Center with over 500 in attendance to hear nationally known author and child advocate Geoffrey Canada. We received a personal email from Susan Danish, Executive Director of the Association of Junior Leagues International, commending us on the event. Mark your calendars now for the 2016 Poverty Conference on October 20th with keynote speaker Wes Moore. This event is sure to be even bigger and better than the last in raising awareness for our focus area of poverty and encouraging not just our members, but our community, to take action to fight poverty. I am so proud of everything we have accomplished together and excited about what the future holds for us. Thank you for your commitment to the Junior League and serving our community. Here’s to another year of enriching lives and changing futures! Always,

Kristen Kristin Ishihara

Is 3 o’clock in the morning too early to be thinking about school supplies? Not for some families. That’s when the first person arrived to get on board the School Supply Train. By 6 o’clock the line had lengthened and folks were happy to wait on doors to open. The Junior League’s School Supply Train gave Longview area students a prepared start to the school year - continuing a tradition more than 20 years old. The SST Committee (pictured) began work last Fall and with the help of the 2016-2017 Provisional Class, Active and Sustaining Members, was able to give away 2,500 backpacks! Dr. Shiloh Roberts (Active), Optometrist was on hand with her staff and the Lions Club to conduct vision screenings. Sport Clips provided free hair cuts and LeTourneau University and Kilgore College Nursing students conducted well-checks. Students and their families wound their way through a maze of stations at the First Baptist Church’s ROC to pick-up their backpacks, shoes and new socks. In addition to vision screenings and hair cuts, students stopped by a dental station, and the Longview Police Department had a table where child identification cards could be made. The event ensured that every base was covered when it came to making sure the whole student was ready to start school. Thank you to the many volunteers and donors that make this event possible every year. “This is just so important, especially just to me. I’m a former teacher, and so I see that kids come to school every year that might not have their supplies, and this is just a way to give them a boost of confidence. It starts their school year with one less worry.” ~ Rachel Graham, Program Chair
