Letter from the President What an amazing time to be a part of the Junior League of Longview. I am so proud of our League and all that we have already accomplished this year, and it is only October! I truly believe that the Junior League of Longview is at a pivotal point where we can be instrumental in the process of revitalizing our community. If you did not have a chance to hear Geoffrey Canada speak at the 2015 Junior League of Longview Poverty Conference, I hope you take the time to look at what he and his team have accomplished through The Harlem Children’s Zone. They completely revitalized 97 of the most impoverished blocks in Harlem, New York, and they did it by tackling one block at a time. During his presentation, Mr. Canada stated, “Despair is contagious, but so is hope.” While it would be easy to focus on the high crime rates, large numbers of children living in poverty, and homelessness in the Longview area, I choose to hope the Junior League of Longview and our community partners can and will make a difference in the lives of those around us. It is time for everyone to sit down at the table, acknowledge the issues within our own community, and choose to take the first step towards eradicating poverty. As a League, we are committed to this fight. Our Project Research and Development Committee is continuing to gather data about our community and the needs of those experiencing poverty, and our projects are well underway. Our League members have already capitalized on multiple opportunities to serve our community through projects like Done in a Day, Helping Hands, and School Supply Train. I hope you will take some time to delve into the pages of this Ledger and see the difference our members are making in our community. Our goal with the Ledger this year is to provide you with a more thorough picture of what is happening in our league. While we will not have as many issues of the Ledger as we have in the past, the issues we do print will provide a different perspective on League happenings. The goal of the Ledger this year is to not just repeat the information most of us already receive through social media. For example, an article about a project might be told through the eyes of a beneficiary of that particular project. For this reason, I hope you take the time to read through each article. I encourage you to come alongside me and to actively choose to have hope for our community’s future. If we want to change our community, it is going to take all of us working together. My Best,
Taylor Clark

Dear Readers, What does it look like to be part of something bigger than you’d be able to accomplish individually? The next couple of pages will paint that exact picture. JLL has been impacting our community for the last 75 years (going on 76 years) and I am continually surprised to learn how far our impact stretches across Longview. As we highlight projects this year, Ua PWXM Q[ \PI\ aW] _W]TL ÅVL I [XMKQÅK XZWRMK\ \PI\ KIX\]ZM[ your attention and that you’d be curious to see how you could be part of the change or impact in our community. The last volume of Ledger took the readers through the history of the Junior League of Longview and what could be concluded is that we have adapted to meet the needs of our community. JUNIOR LEAGUE OF LONGVIEW LEADERSHIP 2015-2016
In the 2014-2015 League year, the Junior League of Longview made significant changes to its leadership structure. Formerly, the League featured one leadership body, the Council. The Council was comprised of the President, President-Elect, Recording Secretary, Vice President Finance, Vice President Membership, Vice President Communications, Community Vice President, Nominating Chair and two Sustaining Advisors. The President-Elect-Elect, Member-at-Large and Treasurer also served as non-voting members. The Council was responsible for both the governance and management functions of the League. Governance functions are those that are focused on the big picture and are forwardthinking in nature. In contrast, management functions are those that are focused on the daily operations and are

present-thinking in nature. As a result of the Council being responsible for both governance and management functions, all leadership decisions for the League were required to pass through a single body. Last year, in an effort to promote efficiency and productivity, the Junior League of Longview changed to a dual leadership system, wherein the functions of governance and management were separated. Under the new system, the League has one body, the Board, that governs and one body, the VP Council, that manages. Board • Governs • Focuses on the big picture • Plans the League’s future • Determines “what” the League is going to do VP Council • Manages • Focuses on the day-to-day operations • Plans the League’s present VP Council Members L to R (Front row) Kendrah Tennison - Vice President Community, • Determines “how” the League is going to do Crista Black - Executive Vice President, Ashley Pate - Assistant the “what” With the governance and management functions separated, the Board is freed from the constraints associated with managing daily operation, and it is able to focus on steering the League in the right direction. It is the VP Council’s responsibility to keep the League operational as the League moves in the direction chosen by the Board. The result of the dual leadership system is a League that is more efficiently run and, therefore, better equipped to create a lasting impact on the community.
Treasurer. L to R (Back row) Lauren Henson - Vice President Communication, LaCee Holly - Vice President membership.
The change in leadership structure necessitated the creation of a new position – the Executive Vice President. The Executive Vice President has ultimate responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the League – a responsibility that once fell upon the President. While the President presides over the Board meetings, the Executive Vice President presides over the VP Council meetings. The Executive Vice President also serves as a liaison between the VP Council and the Board and is a voting member of the Board. Amy Miller Governance/Rollout Team Leader

ost of us have barely wrapped our minds around this school year, much less next - but The Junior League is already planning for the 2016 School Supply Train (SST).

oving into the Junior League’s second year for the project, Read As One is looking to make a bigger impact and reach more people. Last year was a very successful year and we had a lot of big events. This year the League’s goal is to reach different populations through smaller events all while promoting the love of reading to all age groups. So far, the committee has stuffed 500 books in Pre-K and Kindergarten School Supply Train Backpacks. They have also donated an in-class library of around 30 books to a 2nd grade classroom at Everhart Elementary. In October we started our partnership with the Boys and Girls Club. They asked if we would be willing to sit down and read with first, second and third graders to help them work on their reading skills and comprehension - and we said, “Of course!” The students are really struggling with reading at or on grade level, so we are going to spend evenings this fall reading to the students and working on their comprehension. We hope to begin a book club with the teenagers as well.
Below are a few noteworthy events we are working on: • We are in the process of ordering books for a family that will receive their Habitat for Humanity home in November. The family consists of a mother and three sons, and we are going to donate books, magazine subscriptions, and bookcases for the family. We hope to attend the house dedication to make the donation. • We are hoping to do a college and career fair for students in the foster care system in the spring. This will allow students to see their options and to better understand what they need to do to get where they want to be. • We have reached out to a few authors to Skype in to speak for a few minutes about their books. • Last year we had a very successful book drive, and we put several boxes of books back to use to build libraries for nursing homes this year. We will donate several boxes of books and bookcases to a nursing home in need this spring.
We don’t have a set number of books we are wanting to donate, but our goal is to provide books for all participants at each of our events. Please bring your new or gently used books by the League Center!

According to Guttry, the incredible attributes shown by those in the Civil War, and those who had family members in the War, were a great inspiration to sharing her family’s story in conjunction with her research. “My dearest hope is that the readers will love my characters and find inspiration in their courage, faith, and hope during one of American’s most challenging times to thrive, fight a war, and raise a family,” said Guttry.
L
ottie Lipscomb Guttry grew up in the small town of Kilgore, Texas, the site of the famous East Texas Oil Field. She attended Sweet Briar College, received a bachelor of music degree from the University of Texas at Austin, a master of arts from Stephen F. Austin University, and a doctorate from Texas A&M University at Commerce. A cousin introduced Lottie to Sarah and Alexander Browning and their story—the basis for her historical novel Alligator Creek.
This JLL Sustainer and author brings to life what Americans faced during the Civil War, exploring the effects of war, a family’s story, and 19th century lifestyles in Alligator Creek. Guttry combines the stories of her own ancestors, Sarah and Alex Browning, and years of research to enlighten readers about what life was like during that period of civil unrest when brother fought against brother. Based on a true family story and documented history, Alligator Creek presents strong characters who survived the unique and difficult period of the American Civil War. Sarah and Alex Browning lived in Lake City, Florida during the 1860s, and Alex’s recorded military service includes many of the most famous battles between the Generals Grant and Lee.

Helping Hands has been busy during September and October. Not only did the Helping Hands group serve lunch to over 100 men and several families at Hiway 80 Rescue Mission, they were the Junior League’s “boots on the ground” as the site host for the October 10th Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build event. The Junior League of Longview, site host, and 30 additional volunteers from various community organizations worked alongside the League’s Helping Hands team to hang siding on a home. In true “women build” style - the ladies cleaned the job site after completing their task. Leave it to the League to leave something better than they found it!
Community Advisors Luncheon The League’s Community Advisors met in October to hear reports on our major projects and provide feedback. We’re grateful for the time they give our organization every year. When Carolyn found a lump in her breast, her doctor recommended a 3D mammogram at Longview Regional Medical Center. The lump turned out to be a form of cancer that required surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. “I had a whole team of people working together to provide care, answer every question, and help my life go on as normally as possible,” said Carolyn. “They even scheduled my treatments around trips to see my grandchildren. The healthcare system at Longview Regional is second to none.” Contact the Center for Breast Care of Longview Regional Medical Center at 903-232-8596 for information or to schedule your 3D mammogram. Appointments are on a first-come, first-served basis. A physician order is not required, but the patient must provide a physician’s name when an appointment is made. If the person does not have a physician/provider, a list will be provided for the patient’s selection. All mammogram reports will be sent to the physician/provider and follow-ups are the responsibility of the patient.
