Jason Lembo, Shannon Steitz and Christopher Antonucci celebrate a Life Well Lived at HudsonMOD’s fifth anniversary.
hat a year for HudsonMOD! We were thrilled to celebrate another star-studded anniversary, our fifth, at Maritime Parc in Jersey City. We celebrated with Orange Is the New Black’s Francesca Curran, FOX Business Network anchor Lauren Simonetti, actor Emrhys Cooper and more on our red carpet, as the sun set and we watched the lights come on in the Manhattan skyline. We were excited to announce the addition of New York Spaces, the premier interior design magazine for metropolitan New York, and Exuberance, the first luxury lifestyle magazine for the LGBTQ community. The event benefited Animal Aid USA, a volunteer organization dedicated to rescuing and relocating unwanted, abused and abandoned animals. For more coverage of this event, see pages 76-77. As we roll into the new year, we have a full slate of exciting happenings in the New Jersey/New York area. I am particularly thrilled about Cars & Chai, an organization that recently premiered in the tristate area. Cars & Chai celebrates a global passion for luxury autos, and hundreds of luxury auto owners came out to Maritime Parc to celebrate this first-time event. They are now expanding into new regions, including Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia, Southern California and Toronto, and will soon be releasing their 2018 calendar with exciting events planned for the metropolitan area. Stay tuned! We celebrate Life Well Lived with an exciting schedule for next year, and here at HudsonMOD we can’t wait to share it with you!

This fall, double-breasted overcoats were omnipresent on the runways of New York, Milan and Paris, and for good reason: this men’s wardrobe staple gives a nod to ‘80s Wall Street power-dressing while reinterpreting the look for 2017. Slouchy silhouettes have been replaced by tight tailoring in crushed velvets and double-faced cashmeres lending a modern touch.
BOTTEGA VENETA A nipped-in waist, dramatic spread lapel and shorter length give this doublebreasted coat a modern feel that works from day to night over suits as well as into the weekend over jeans. Form and function come together for the urban-dweller fashionista. Available at Bottega Veneta, 650 Madison Avenue, $6,900
TOM FORD DOUBLE-BREASTED BOUCLE CHECK COAT A classic double-breasted overcoat is always in style. This season, Tom Ford’s dark-grey version hits all the right notes with the right proportions, uber-luxe finishes and a debonaire silhouette. Available at Tom Ford, 672 Madison Avenue, $8,250

MICHAEL KORS Olive drab is anything but drab in color and design. With its formfitting belt and nod to ‘40s military overcoats, this new iteration is uber-masculine and deserves a front-ofthe line spot in your fall fashion lineup. An officer and a gentleman, to be sure. Available at Michael Kors, 520 Broadway; price available upon request
GIORGIO ARMANI A finely tailored double-breasted jacket in velvet adds loads of luxury when juxtaposed against a draped trouser. Subtle patterns make this look less corporate and more like a fashion statement, perfect for dressing up or down this season. Available at Giorgio Armani, 760 Madison Avenue, $3,195

ling recipes featuring some of their favorite fungi.
PORTER COLLINS: WILD MUSHROOMS E PEPE CHEF ANTHONY PINO started Anthony David’s Gourmet Specialties 15 years ago with his spouse and business partner Liz, after they graduated from Johnson & Wales University. The Pino empire expanded in 2002 with the opening of Anthony David’s, followed in 2008 by Bin 14 and the recent opening of Porter Collins in burgeoning uptown Hoboken.
INGREDIENTS: 2 cups roughly chopped wild mushrooms 2 cloves of garlic, sliced 2 oz. e xtra virgin olive oil, plus a drizzle for the finish 4 oz. heavy cream 4 oz. Tallegio cheese, diced 1 lb. fresh vucatini, cooked to al dente 1 tsp. freshly ground black pepper 2 oz. Pecorino cheese, grated Sea salt to taste
DIRECTIONS: - In a large pan over medium-high heat, sauté the mushrooms and garlic in the olive oil until mushrooms are lightly golden brown (about 5 minutes). Once the moisture from mushrooms has evaporated, add the cream and Tallegio. -R educe heat to medium-low and simmer for 3 minutes. -A dd the bucatini to the sauce and toss, then add the pepper and salt. - F inish with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and the Pecorino. Makes four portions.

SUMMIT HOUSE: ROASTED MAITAKE MUSHROOMS, SEABEANS & SUNCHOKE PURÉE CHEF MARTIN KESTER is the executive chef of recently opened Summit House. He joined the restaurant after six years as chef de cuisine of Ninety Acres in Peapack, NJ. A 2003 graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, Chef Kester has trained in highly rated kitchens throughout New Jersey and New York, including the NoMad in NY, Elements in Princeton and Blue Hill at Stone Barns in Pocantico Hills, NY. INGREDIENTS: 1 oz. vegetable oil 3 oz. M aitake mushrooms (also known as hen-of-the-wood), cleaned with damp cloth 1 tbsp. high-quality butter ¾ ounce seabeans 1 tbsp. each fresh parsley and fresh chives, finely chopped, combined then divided 3 oz. sunchokes 3 tbsp. salt (plus finishing to taste) Juice of 1 lemon DIRECTIONS: - Using the tip of a paring knife, gently split off portions of the Maitake mushrooms, maintaining the integrity and shape of the small bunches, about 1-2 inches in length and 1/2 a centimeter in thickness. The goal is to achieve a
meatier texture throughout the base of the mushroom and crispy ends. - Place heavy-bottomed sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add ¼ ounce of vegetable oil and, once hot, the mushrooms. Do not crowd the pan. Cook the mushrooms, undisturbed, for 45 seconds. Toss the mushrooms, turn heat down to medium, add ½ tablespoon of butter and cook until evenly browned (about a minute). Add the seabeans and continue to sauté for 2 minutes. Finish the mushrooms with 1 tablespoon of finely cut herbs and salt to taste. - Wash sunchokes and peel them. Add to a large pot of cool water with 3 tablespoons of salt and the lemon juice, then bring to boil. Gently slide a paring knife into the sunchokes, remove them from heat and strain. Add to a blender and purée on high. If needed, add a bit
of vegetable oil to smoothen. Season with salt to taste. - On a hot plate, add the mushroom and seabean preparation in 3 bunches. Add 2-3 tablespoons of sunchoke purée around the plate, but not on the mushrooms. Finish with fresh herbs and a pinch of Maldon salt, if desired.

CYRIL CAMUS: Living Tradition
C
rafting a smooth Cognac is no easy task, but for Cyril Camus, the art of distilling is in his blood. Cognac is making a comeback, and by adhering to family tradition, Camus
has kept his eponymous fifth-generational company at the forefront. HudsonMOD spoke with Camus about how he’s preserving and elevating the distilling techniques perfected by his forefathers in 1863.
How do you perceive CAMUS’ growth in the upcoming years with so many new spirits on the market? Cognac was at the heart of so many classic cocktails, such as the Sazerac, Old Fashioned and the Sidecar, but was replaced by rye and whiskey when it got too expensive or hard to find. Now, mixologists are rediscovering why Cognac was the original ingredient, and it is regaining its place on cocktail menus. At the same time, the CAMUS brand stands for quality, heritage and craftsmanship. Consumers appreciate that and are making choices based on taste as opposed to the latest promotion.
How does your brand differ from other Cognacs? At CAMUS we’re not just Cognac makers, we are wine growers. Respect for the grape, the land and our family traditions is at the core of what we do. The exhibit opens on November 13 and will present more than 150 of the master’s drawings as well as three sculptures, his earliest known painting, an architectural model for a chapel vault and a substantial body of complementary works by other artists for comparison and context. inancial planning is essential to helping secure the future of you and your loved ones, yet it is easy to
delay tackling it. Creating a customized financial plan helps define your individual investment goals, identify potential obstacles and allows you to adjust strategies as circumstances change. For something this important, you need advisors who are experts at minding every issue and detail. Gino Gargiulo, his teammate and partner of more than 20 years, remembers him best for his cheerful, courteous and extremely generous demeanor. “He was the glue that really held all of these events together because he was the guy that

What was so incredible about the guy was he would help everybody.” Over the years, the two men worked on 12 boats together (six by the Missouri-based Marine Technology Inc.), designing and racing them as driver (Gargiulo) and throttleman (Goldman). The newest was a 52-foot, all-carbon-fiber, lime-green cat designed to match (down to the taillights and air vents) Gargiulo’s Lamborghini Aventador SuperVeloce (SV) Roadster. Gargiulo estimates it contains 100,000 custom Lamborghini parts. “There’s so much of him in the boat,” says Gargiulo. “Every month he would fly to Missouri to check on the progress.” The two men had an unbreakable bond developed over years of racing together. They were so close that they could anticipate each other’s moves, according to Gargiulo. In 2010, they broke the speed record for pleasure boats at a cool 193 MPH. (You can see a video of their run on YouTube, still a record). They also surpassed a long-standing endurance record which had stood for more than 28 years. CALIFORNIA CLOSETS TRANSFORMS HOMES WITH EXCEPTIONAL CUSTOM DESIGNS AIMED AT INCREASING RELAXATION AND ENJOYMENT BY NICOLE HADDAD
G
reat ideas are born of necessity. And so it was with California Closets. In 1978, a 17-year-old college student by the name of Neil Balter, frustrated with the lack of functionality and space in his dorm-room closet, came up with an innovative solution to the problem. Voila! A custom closets company was born. What started with a classic line of storage solutions, including a European wall-mounted rail system with mitered drawers and melamine materials, expanded into a total custom storage-solution company that targets all areas of the home, including the garage, home office, kitchen and pantry. Today, consumers can choose from a variety of lines available in beautiful finishes, colors and styles. They also can select luxury countertops, hardware, shelving systems, accents, lighting and accessories. California Closets has more than 120 showrooms and hundreds of designers across North America and plans to continue to grow. Shellie Topper, a senior design consultant whose family has owned showrooms in northern New Jersey since 1986, describes her work as rewarding because it makes a difference in people’s lives. “People don’t consider the value of a beautiful organized closet or space until they have it,” she says. “It makes their lives easier and the experience of getting dressed in the mornings faster and less stressful. Who doesn’t want more time in their day?” Your home, after all, should be your sanctuary, a place that promotes relaxation and re-

flects your values and personality. A cluttered, disorganized space has the opposite effect. HOW DOES CALIFORNIA CLOSETS WORK? First, a design consultant visits your house for a complimentary session, getting to know your space and understanding what will and won’t work for your lifestyle. The consultant comes up with a tailored design based on the project’s scope and your budget and lifestyle needs. Each consultant is trained in California Closets’ proprietary CAD software which allows clients to see a 3D version of how their finished space will look: materials, hardware, accessories and all. Once approved, the custom design is sent to one of the manufacturing centers to be crafted. Die-hard naysayers might scoff at the feasibility and importance of enhancing your space through design, but California Closets has the system down pat. It’s also about transforming any part of your home through smart design. Examples include beds that seamlessly integrate into the wall when not in use, technology-management systems for entertainment centers with hidden hardware, push-to-open drawers, LED puck lighting and custom built-in cabinetry suited to your taste. Kitchens and pantries receive the fullstart functionality treatment with sliding storage shelves, pull-out baskets and slideout wine racks. Need an efficient workspace? Besides pull-out keyboards and hidden cords, a fusion track wall system creates horizontal space savers, docking stations serve technological needs, and popup stations supply power. Time is of the essence, so when your closet is in disarray, you’re asking for a headache. SHELLIE TOPPER, senior design consultant at California Closets, says, “A custom-designed and organized closet goes a long way towards a nice daily experience.” She recommends cleaning out your closet twice a year. A favorite tip of hers? “Take everything out and place it back on the hanger the wrong way. If in six months, the hanger is still turned the wrong way (meaning you haven’t worn it), give it away!” ERIC HIMEL, fashion stylist and originator of the term “closet purge,” suggests another approach, this one with immediate benefits. “Your life changes, your needs change, and your body changes,” he says. “Literally take everything out of your closet, try everything on and ask yourself these three questions: Does it fit? Does it feel good on you? Does it reflect who you are and how you want others to see you?” As you can guess, if the answer is no, the answer is also: purge! Himel recommends organizing your closet by type, season and color — not according to how often you wear something — and suggests not treating your closet as if it were any other room in your home. Cleanliness and organization are key. Interested in more in-depth tips? Visit HudsonMOD.com for a fun video with experts. HUDSONMOD.com VOLUME 6.3

An Unforgettable Shift By Stephanie Krikorian
Back in the day, television shows were big on using the old-fashioned cliffhanger in the season finale, leaving audiences desperately wondering what next year’s premiere would bring to their favorite characters and plotlines. Empire is one of only a handful of shows that maintains that tradition. In May, it offered up one whopper of a summer send-off for Season 3 and a big shocker in the first episode of Season 4, which started on FOX on September 27.

Yet the biggest and some would argue best 911 R feature is the slick-shifting 6-speed, three pedals on the floor, genuine manual transmission. That’s because fans of the marque believe that a manual transmission gives a skilled driver a better driving experience. Personally, I think that if you have never driven a sports car with a manual transmission, you are missing one of motoring’s greatest thrills. When you are in a good car on a great road with no traffic, expertly rowing up and down through the gears, matching revs to your speed, is a magical experience. The Porsche faithful all know this and while the amazing 7-speed PDK (Porsche Doppelkupplung) is faster on the racetrack and easier on the left foot in heavy traf-

industry experts. The European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF), the world’s leading fair for art, antiques and design, found that global art prices remained healthy. Its Art Market Report 2017 by Professor Rachel A. J. Pownall, the TEFAF Chair in Art Markets at the School of Business Economics at Maastricht University in the Netherlands, utilized data in part from Artnet’s global auction sales. The report conceded that auction houses have been losing their clientele to art dealers as buyers and sellers alike seek privacy and opacity in their transactions. Yet growth continues: total sales in 2016 were $45 billion, up 1.7 percent from 2015. The good news for collectors is it’s a buyer’s market. The most significant change the report found was in the U.S., where the value of sales at auction dropped by 41 percent (far exceeding the 9 percent drop in consignments). Likewise, the Art Basel and UBS Global Art Market Report, which continues economist Clare McAndrew’s longstanding, extensive research into the field, revealed that, despite the U.S. sustaining a “substantial” decline in sales, it nonetheless accounted for 40 percent of market share. The UK and China markets accounted for 21 and 20 percent, respectfully. Following is our annual collector’s report of art recently sold at auction.

T
he Vanderbilt name is synonymous with glamour and success, and Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin — descendant of the railroad mogul Cornelius Vanderbilt — is no exception to that. Costin has dominated the music industry with multiple billboard hits, lent her voice to philanthropic organizations and is now entering a new tech realm as she prepares to launch SohoMuse. Catch up with Costin and her various ventures in this HudsonMOD exclusive. You’re preparing to launch SohoMuse. Describe the platform to our readers. With SohoMuse, creative professionals now have the ability to network globally and collaborate with other creative professionals in the entire industry, showcase their entire body of work, as well as source reliable top-tier talent. For example, an actor-director can promote both professions on a single platform. A producer can log on and find not only actors or directors, but everything from cinematographers and set designers to more specialized talent like ballet dancers and motion-graphics artists. They can not only source every type of talent they need for an upcoming TV show or film right on the platform, but also qualify that talent through their digital resumes, demo reels, multimedia portfolios and even industry referrals through our built-in endorsement system.
What inspired you to develop SohoMuse? The inspiration for SohoMuse came from my experiences in the music business. On one side, I would be working in the studio late at night, feeling creative and looking for someone to collaborate with, but everyone was asleep. There was no online space where I could find other artists — not just other musicians and songwriters, but dancers, poets, painters — in other parts of the world and meaningfully interact and create with them. On another side, when I was looking to hire creative talent, like dancers and choreographers, hair and makeup stylists and film crews for music videos, I found that process to be incredibly distracting, frustrating and painfully slow.
Over the next five years, what do you hope to accomplish with SohoMuse? The vision is that the people are collaborating and creating content and that we are a full-distribution one-stop shop for creatives. We are working with a Blockchain partner to fully explore that technology and its potential applications for our members. Technology and this arena are an important intersection because technology is life. It’s everything that we do. Everything moves at a rapid pace. In order for you to market yourself or find a job, it’s all about using technology. But it has to be efficient.
What philanthropies are you currently working with? I’m on the board of the Vanderbilt Museum, board of the Ovarian Cancer Prevention Coalition of Greater California and on the
Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin committee of the American Heart Association for the past four years. I’ve chosen to be a part of these organizations because the causes affect me directly. The Vanderbilt Museum is my family’s property. It is an inspirational and monumental place where I can visit my family’s legacy and a place that continues growing for generations to come. It was also donated to the county by my great grandfather, Willie K. Vanderbilt Jr., and is a wonderful museum and planetarium for children and adults alike. The American Heart Association is dear to me because I nearly lost my dad to a heart attack just before his sixtieth birthday a few years ago. It’s been an important cause in my life. Heart attacks are the leading cause of death for women. I contribute as much as I can to the organization by performing at their events and cochaired the Hamptons Heart Ball last year. The Ovarian Cancer Prevention Coalition of Greater California is another organization very dear to me because I lost my mother to ovarian cancer when she was 55 years old. I’ve been an advocate for many years now and working to help raise awareness and funding for early testing and ultimately find a cure.
As a notable singing artist and public figure, why do you feel it’s important to give back to your community? It is always important to give back to your community no matter what your status is. But I think when people have a voice and are given the platform, it’s an incredible opportunity to advocate for important charities, organizations and causes and on behalf of those who don’t have an opportunity for their voices to be heard.
