ighways is the magazine of Benzel-Busch. Focused on our wonderful cars and dedicated to a lifestyle of travel, adventure, luxury and great experiences, it continues to be our great pleasure to bring you all of the elements that make our brand special. In case you haven’t heard, electric vehicles are coming on in a big way. Every major manufacturer has announced plans to tap into this growing market. Some even have taken the bold step of setting target dates for the elimination of internal-combustion engines altogether. The emergence of electric vehicles has introduced a host of new players into the industry. As this trend manifests itself over the next five years, the opportunities seem practically endless. And Mercedes and Audi are right there, recently announcing their bold steps into the electric vehicle market with the EQ and e-tron, respectively. These vehicles are every bit representative of their premier marques and feature the same quality, performance, luxury and comfort that you would expect from every Mercedes and Audi.

10

We will continue to update you on this exciting segment of the industry. The Q8 is a game changer for the Audi brand. We couldn’t be more excited to offer our detailed profile of this beautifully crafted, high-performance SUV. Many believe Gordon Wagener is the most brilliant designer the auto industry has seen in decades. He continues to push the envelope of design with his philosophy of “sensual purity.” This simple and clean approach inspired his latest and possibly greatest creation, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury. Be sure to check out, too, our feature on Hinckley Yachts and our guide to Quebec City, one of North America’s most romantic cities. The Audi e-tron is the marque’s first fully electric vehicle offering long-range capabilities and seating for five people.

I SING THE FUTURE ELECTRIC BY DOM MILIANO

T

he celebrated science-fiction author Ray Bradbury wrote a Twilight Zone screenplay and short story called I Sing the Body Electric — a title used earlier by the poet Walt Whitman. In the Bradbury tale, a widower has an electric “Grandma” robot built to help him raise his three children who are very distraught over the premature death of their mother. Initially, the daughter rejects the robot, fearing the mechanical grandmother will abandon the family and leave them alone again. Happily, as can happen only in the Twilight Zone, trust and understanding grow and everything works out in the end. In the rapidly evolving world of electrically powered automobiles, there are — as in our sci-fi tale — pockets of resistance (some very strong) to an all-electric automotive future. However, although we aren’t living in the Twilight Zone, a future filled with exciting electrically powered vehicles is coming and, with understanding and trust, a real-world happy ending is quite possible. So, let’s leave the Twilight Zone and look at the promising creations from Audi and Mercedes-Benz.

AUDI E-TRON PROTOTYPE In March, Audi unveiled its first all-electric vehicle at the Geneva Auto Show. As you would expect from Audi, this vehicle, a stylish and sporty SUV, combined the space and comfort of a typical luxury car with a travel range suitable for everyday use. The engineers focused on these parameters because interior space (important for comfort and safety) and range (how far you go between “fill-ups”) are two of the most important concerns for the future electric car–buying public. The Geneva Show e-tron prototype wasn’t just car-show eye candy. It was part of a fleet of 250 vehicles that Audi sent out across the planet into the most extreme conditions. From the cold of Scandinavia to the heat of Africa to the mountainous altitudes of Asia and the north loop of the Nürburgring, the e-tron prototypes endeavored to prove that battery-powered SUVs could validate their all-around qualities in uncompromising practical tests under extreme conditions. These trials will give Audi valuable data on performance, reliability, comfort, safety and

26 BENZELBUSCHHIGHWAYS.com FALL/WINTER 2018

HW_Tech Report.indd 26

11/7/18 7:19 PM

practicality. By the end of the tests, Audi says that the e-trons will have traveled some three million miles. These SUVs weren’t stripped-down test mules. All had space and accommodations for five people along with plenty of luggage, similar to what is offered in a typical Audi luxury class model. They also had to have range suitable for longer journeys along with comprehensive charging options to demonstrate to customers that they could drive 100 percent electric without making compromises. The goal of the production version of the Audi e-tron prototype was to be able to be filled up on electricity at fast-charging stations (with up to 150 kW charging capacity) in less than 30 minutes. A production version of the SUV model based on all of this testing with the e-tron fleet will launch in the European market late this year. Rupert Stadler, chairman of the board of management of Audi AG, said, “Audi sets an important milestone for the company’s future with its first purely electrically powered model.” He explained that in 2020 the company would have three all-electric vehicles in the Audi product range: a four-door Gran Turismo, a production version of the Audi e-tron Sportback concept and a model in the compact segment. He promised, “We will be launching more than 20 electric cars and plug-in hybrids by 2025, spread across all segments and concepts.”

As we were going to press with this issue of Highways, Audi announced that U.S. customers would be able to configure and reserve a 2019 e-tron, Audi’s first all-electric vehicle, on September 17. The plan is to provide a website that will outline everything a prospective owner would need to know to option and then reserve their new all-electric e-tron. Of course, this also includes pricing. To support its customers, Benzel-Busch has created the link (below) that will give their clients everything they need to configure their e-tron and, more importantly, reserve their vehicle through a refundable $1,000 fee. The site is www.benzelbusch.com/etron. After placing a reservation, customers will be able to track it online and through their local dealer. Follow Audi as more details are shared on their planned “ecosystem” and offerings for U.S. customers at the September 17 global introduction held in the heart of Silicon Valley, San Francisco.

The e-tron features a near-silent motor, sound proofing, dual pane windows and special sealing to reduce noise while driving; it’s equipped with new electric quattro all-wheel drive.

Features of the Concept EQ include alubeam silver paintwork, concealed windshield wipers, cameras in place of mirrors and no door handles, giving it a futuristic appearance.

CONCEPT EQ Mercedes-Benz is credited with the invention of the automobile. So it can’t come as a shock that the company has put a lot of effort into building not just electrically powered vehicles, but also an entirely new range of transportation technologies. Dr. Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler AG and head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, said, “The

emission-free automobile is the future. And our new EQ brand goes far beyond electric vehicles. EQ stands for a comprehensive electric ecosystem of services, technologies and innovations.” At the 2018 Paris Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz unveiled its new product brand for electric mobility: EQ. Mercedes-Benz explained that the letters EQ

stand for Electric Intelligence and evolved from the company’s core values of Emotion and Intelligence. Dr. Zetsche states that the EQ brand embodies all key aspects of customer-focused electric mobility and extends beyond the vehicle itself. The spectrum goes further than just offering electric vehicles and includes such features as wall boxes, charging services and home energy-storage units. This expanding collection of supporting technologies is vital to the success of electrical vehicles. Think back to the lack of infrastructure at the turn of the last century when internal-combustion-engine vehicles were starting to appear on roads. Their success depended on easily available fuel and spare parts. Because the Paris Show EQ model is described by Mercedes-Benz as “close-to-production” with the SUV models expected to be on sale by the end of the decade, having the EQ Brand infrastructure built and available to consumers are vital to the success of the venture.

That’s why Mercedes-Benz doesn’t want us to look at EQ as only a vehicle. Rather, the company envisions it as a portfolio that will encompass its current and all future battery-electric cars along with the associated electric-mobility products and services available from Mercedes-Benz. This concept will provide consumers a simple one place to shop for all of their electric-mobility needs. Mercedes-Benz describes the EQ brand as the next logical step in the sales and marketing strategy called Best Customer Experience. Dr. Zetsche adds, “The mobility of the future at Mercedes-Benz will stand on four pillars: Connected, Autonomous, Shared and Electric. Concept EQ is the logical fusion of all four pillars.” We’re not talking pie in the sky here. Mercedes-Benz already offers a suitable charging infrastructure for electric cars, including

a wall box as a fast-charging station for the home, the free Charge & Pay app for convenient recharging at public stations and — for home owners and business — stationary energy-storage units for power generated by photovoltaic or solar systems. While they already exist, in the future they will all be bundled under EQ. In this way, Mercedes-Benz is creating a consistent, convenient and clear image for sustainable products and services with the star.

SINGING ELECTRIC Unlike the science-fiction tale that kicked off this article, electrically powered vehicles are here right now and will grow over time to become an important part of the world’s mobility needs. The automobile’s future still is bright and, at least from Audi and Mercedes-Benz, electrically charged.

Just like the exterior, the interior of the Concept EQ offers futuristic features such as a floating widescreen dashboard screen with touch-sensitive capabilities and navigation systems on the backs of the seats.

aerodynamics. One night he was lying on his bed when he had a light bulb moment: instead of trying to minimize interference around the airflows between the wings and engines separately, as on a traditional aircraft, why not combine the two air flows and find the ideal aerodynamics? With this inspiration, Fujino jumped out of bed and flipped on the light switch. Having no paper close by, he ripped a calendar off the wall and feverishly sketched his idea on the back of it. This sketch would give birth to the concept that would launch him to stratospheric heights, literally and metaphorically. In his design, Fujino placed the aircraft’s engines over its wings at an optimum location. This would become the HondaJet. By industry standards, Fujino’s design was considered impractical and impossi-

ble. It also conflicted with his engineering professors, who taught him it was wrong to mount anything atop an aircraft wing. Industry peers dismissed the design outright, calling it ugly. Yet a determined Fujino stood by his design, confident it would set a precedent. In December 1997, Fujino pitched Honda’s board of directors. He showed them his sketch, now redrawn many times, and told them what he had seen in the U.S.: a growing market for business jets. This forward-thinking would transform air travel here and around the world. The Honda Civic of the skies was born. Today, the 57-year-old Fujino is distinguished by his black-rimmed Aviators and a boyish face. Meanwhile, his HondaJet Elite — the newest iteration of his dream for a light business jet — is more than just

ichimasa Fujino had gotten used to hearing no. It was 1997, and Honda Motor Company had just shuttered its secret R&D project intended to revolutionize aviation on a commercial scale. As a Honda engineer originally from Japan, Fujino had joined Honda’s R&D department right out of college and worked for a decade in Starkville, Mississippi, home of Mississippi State University, a leading research center for advanced aeronautics. With no breakthrough technologies to show for it, Fujino and his team were sent back to Tokyo to find new jobs within Honda. Unpacking his things after moving into a new house in Tokyo, Fujino spotted a 1930s textbook by Ludwig Prandtl, the German engineer whose pioneering analysis built the foundation for modern

a Honda Civic, boasting two GE Honda Aero Engines HF120 turbofans mounted on pylons above the wing. Its other innovations may not jump off the page but are also important. They include a composite fuselage, a long sloping nose and specially contoured wings which, when combined, allow air to flow smoothly across the fuselage, effectively reducing drag that can occur at high air speeds. Because of these advancements, the HondaJet Elite is more fuel efficient than all other similar-sized twin-engine business jets in its class. The second aircraft from Honda Aircraft Company, the HondaJet Elite is also the fastest-, farthest- and highest-flying plane in its category. The maximized fuselage space makes its cabin the largest in its category and includes a full-service galley, a private lavatory with optional belted seat and a Bongiovi sound system.

Fujino is now the president and CEO of Honda Aircraft Company, a subsidiary of Honda Motor Company. In the past, he referred to the HondaJet as his daughter, which implies the obvious: this project was a labor of love. It wasn’t so long ago that he was hounded by a chorus telling him no. It has taken him almost 20 years to bring his vision to life. The HondaJet Elite is now touted as the parent company’s flagship creation. Indeed, the jet has finally realized the long-held dream of Honda’s late founder Soichiro Honda, an aviation enthusiast who piloted planes well into old age but died before the R&D department could develop a commercially viable plane. Today, both Fujino and Honda have a sleek, state-of-the-art jet that perfectly embodies the company’s tagline: The power of dreams.

HOLIDAYING IN THE HUDSON VALLEY BY NICOLE FONZINO

J

ust because summer is coming to an end doesn’t mean you can’t think about vacations. When you want to exchange views of the concrete jungle’s skyscrapers for bucolic scenery, don’t head to the nearest airport terminal to hop on a jet. Instead, pack up and drive north into New

York’s Hudson Valley. This idyllic region of the Empire State is split into three territories – lower, middle and upper – and offers travelers charming stays, outdoor adventures, history and, most of all, breathtaking scenery. In the fall, the Hudson Valley becomes even more exceptional thanks to the colorful foliage. The next time you’re looking to escape and unwind for a few days, venture to one of these re-

sorts. You’ll find everything from quaint accommodations to superior amenities and nearby activities that will make your Hudson Valley stay memorable.

BEEKMAN ARMS & DELAMATER INN Rhinebeck, NY The Hudson Valley brims with historical sites. If you’re looking for a getaway filled with commemorated happenings, the Beekman Arms & Delameter Inn should be number one on your list of places to stay. “America’s oldest continuously operated hotel in the historic Hudson Valley,” states the hotel, is a colonial inn that opened in 1766. With centuries of old-world charm in its heritage, the Beekman Arms & Delamater Inn has served as host to such luminaries as George Washington, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Oprah Winfrey, Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra, Billy Joel and Jon Bon Jovi. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Even though the inn exudes colonial charm, you can enjoy a variety of modern luxuries. On-site and in-room spa services, dinner at the inn’s Tavern at the Beekman Arms and in-room amenities await. The campus-style property is comprised of 15 buildings offering a total of 80 comfortable rooms between the Beekman Arms and Delamater Inn. Amenities – like wood-burning fireplaces – vary from room to room, but guests can expect chic décor unique to each space. After you’ve explored the grounds, take a stroll through charming Rhinebeck. With a range of worthwhile places to visit, such as the nearby Culinary Institute of America, Dutchess County Fairgrounds and gorgeous estates formerly owned by the Vanderbilts and FDR, you’ll be planning your next trip to Rhinebeck before you know it. www.beekmandelamaterinn.com

SUMPTUOUS SPIRITS BY NICOLE FONZINO

here’s always something fabulous happening in the world of spirits. Whether you’re hosting a gettogether with friends and family or simply sipping for yourself, here are some new premier musthaves to keep your at-home bar up to par.

GLENFIDDICH FIRE & CANE

www.glenfiddich.com, $49.99

Smoky or sweet? With Glenfiddich’s newest Fire & Cane, you no longer have to choose between the two. This single malt Scotch whisky is the fourth edition in the distillery’s Experimental Series, which has earned a reputation for pushing whisky’s boundaries. Conceptualized by malt master Brian Kinsman, Fire & Cane fuses smoky whisky with nonpeated whisky that matured side-by-side in bourbon casks. Afterward, Kinsman aged the mixture in Latin rum casks for an additional three months to build and add distinct flavors. The final blend produces prominent notes of smokiness from the fire component and sweet baked apple, toasted marshmallows and toffee from the cane. “It’s a bold combination, which I’m sure will appeal and intrigue single malt enthusiasts as well as those looking to try something new and different,” says Kinsman. What are you waiting for?

JOHNNIE WALKER BLUE LABEL GHOST AND RARE PORT ELLEN www.johnniewalker.com, $349.99

The latest launch from Johnnie Walker — the Blue Label Ghost and Rare Port Ellen — redefines rare. Expertly crafted by Dr. Jim Beveridge, this release is the second installment in a limited-edition series that blends ghost whiskies from defunct distilleries with rare malt expressions from Johnnie Walker Blue Label reserves. For this edition, three ghost whiskies were selected from the Caledonia, Carsebridge and iconic Port Ellen distilleries. When blended with five other rare malt expressions, drinkers are left with a blend so smooth it’s dangerous. Nose notes include creamy vanilla, while citrus, rich malt and tropical fruit flavors linger on the palate. Each sip ends desirably with a smoky element, which comes directly from the Port Ellen. The best way to enjoy a glass? Neat with alternating sips of ice-cold water.

CÎROC VS

www.ciroc.com/brandy, $35.99 CÎROC launched a very special bottle that has taken the brand to new levels: the CÎROC VS Fine French Brandy. With VS standing for “very special,” the creation of the blend adhered to strict distilling techniques under the watchful eye of master distiller Jean-Sébastien Robicquet to achieve its unique taste. Creating the signature spirit, which is produced in the south of France, begins with sourcing fine French grapes. Robicquet then distills the liquid in alembic copper pots. When finished, he leaves it to mature in French oak barrels. When all is said and done, the bottled liquor embodies full notes of fresh fruit, vanilla and a delicate touch of French oak. When you want to enjoy, simply pour CÎROC VS over ice or serve neat for the ultimate sipping experience.

RÉMY MARTIN VSOP LIMITED EDITION WITH MATT W. MOORE 0

If you want to add an artistic touch to your at-home bar, then the latest collaboration by Rémy Martin will undoubtedly catch your eye. The iconic spirits brand partnered with Matt W. Moore, an American artist internationally renowned for his digital-abstract style called Vectorfunk, to bring its VSOP bottle to life. After taking in the bucolic scenery of the Cognac region, Moore drew his inspiration for the bottle’s design from the picturesque landscapes of grapes, vines, leaves and sunbursts. The rest is history. The final design fuses bold colors with eye-popping shapes that will draw any bystander’s attention. Moore even gave the iconic Rémy Martin logo a Vectorfunk makeover. What lies inside the bottle is just as alluring as the exterior presentation. Rémy Martin’s VSOP is crafted from eaux-de-vie from the Cognac region and aged in French Limousin oak barrels. A sip will leave notes of ripe fruit and licorice lingering on your palette, while you breathe in hints of ripe apricot, baked apple and floral scents. One thing is for sure: Rémy Martin VSOP Limited Edition with Matt W. Moore is a bottle worth drinking and observing.

AUDI Q8 STYLE TO MAKE YOU SMILE BY DOM MILIANO

M

y high school English teacher loved to say “Style is the man.” When we read Shakespeare or any of the great writers and poets, she would look longingly skyward and utter that phrase, hoping our adolescent brains could understand it. Happily, after, ahem, a few decades past 12th grade, the new Audi Q8 helps me (finally) get the phrase’s meaning.

Audi Q8 is expected to launch in the U.S. later this year.

HW_Cover Story.indd 45

The Q8’s interior features a sleek MMI touch response display and can comfortably seat up to five passengers.

You Look Marvelous The new Audi Q8 is all about style. And style really is the point. It’s a fashion magazine cover star, not a back-of-the-issue story in Popular Mechanics. The first thing you’ll notice is its sexy front grill: the precursor, according to Audi, of the brand’s future look. Next is its aggressive stance due in large part to bulging wheel wells and a tapering, coupe-like roofline. Those wheels, by the way, break new ground (pun intended) when it comes to their size: a very in-your-face 21 inches in diameter can be factory installed. They appear even more substantial because — compared to its sibling, the highly regarded Q7 — the Q8 is a couple of inches shorter. That means it will carry fewer passengers (five vs. seven in the Q7). But unless you regularly have to haul a passel of passengers — think office car pool or after-school soccer practice taxi — you’ll seldom miss the Q7’s third row of seats. You will, however, love the new Q8’s sharp (dare I say, fashionable) good looks. I think it will easily

46 BENZELBUSCHHIGHWAYS.com FALL/WINTER 2018

The refined exterior design showcases a prominent radiator grill, a sleek sloping roofline and highly contoured air inlets.

pass the “look back and smile after I park it” test. For some, that’s reason enough to give the Q8 their consideration.

A Little History First Audi says this new SUV’s exterior design is based on an interesting and important car, the Ur-Quattro — Ur, in German means “first.” This “first Quattro” was devised by the top people at Audi to be a world-beater. It was Ferdinand Piëch, the grandson of Dr. Porsche, who dared Audi’s elite engineers to build something that would be their personal dream car. It had to be better handling, sharper looking and, above all, soul stirring. The result was the first Audi Quattro. Powerful, blessed with all-wheel drive and superior road holding, it was this platform that demonstrated to the pro-

fessional rally world that rear-wheel drive was yesterday’s news. In fact, rally great and two-time World Rally Champion Walter Röhrl told me that after he drove the Audi, he firmly believed all-wheel drive was vastly superior and all cars, road or track, should be so equipped. He then demonstrated his thoughts on the subject as we rocketed up France’s Col de Turini in an all-wheel-drive car. Lesson learned!

Style But With Substance The new Q8 pays homage to that original Ur-Quattro design with a sloping rear roof and shorter, more nimble body. Its good looks go more than skin deep, however. Under the sexy sheet metal beats the heart of an athlete. Of course, the proven and practically unbeatable

quattro all-wheel drive is standard. Engineered with a purely mechanical center differential, it seamlessly transfers power to the front and rear axles at a standard ratio of 40 percent front and 60 percent rear. When encountering slippery road conditions, the system can transfer the majority of the power to the axle with better traction. The Q8 comes standard equipped with an adaptive damping suspension. This means you can adjust the performance of the springs and shock absorbers to match the terrain or your preferred driving style. Also available is a more sophisticated adaptive air suspension that enables the chassis to be raised by as much as 10 inches of ground clearance, making the Q8 a capable choice for ventures off-road. It’s important to note

BENZELBUSCHHIGHWAYS.com FALL/WINTER 2018

HW_Cover Story.indd 47

47

11/7/18 10:08 AM

that with the optional air suspension system, the Q8 benefits from the addition of Audi’s performance-enhancing rearwheel-steering magic. This makes the Q8 handle more stably at higher speeds and more nimbly in tight, low-speed maneuvers and parallel parking. The engineering behind the system is highly complex, but since the technology works without your intervention, all you have to do is enjoy the added stability and driving enjoyment.

Pop the Hood Today, turbo charging is how well-engineered vehicles can deliver better fuel efficiency without sacrificing horsepower and torque. When coupled to a properly engineered transmission, turbo-charged vehicles with several hundred horsepower can sip fuel like (and in many cases better than) many underpowered, cramped, noisy and uncomfortable economy cars did just a few years ago.

The Q8’s precise EPA fuel efficiency has yet to be estimated, but you can expect combined fuel mileage from the 335-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 to be in the low 20 mpg range with high 20 mpg possible on the highway. By the way, the Q8 has an intriguing bit of technology that, at least in the USA, is more geared for the future. It’s a 48-volt hybrid electric system that, in countries other than the States, will allow the engine to shut off when the Q8 is cruising. Right now, we in the USA will see it used only for the stop/start system. Expect more news on this in the future as electric vehicles become more mainstream. The Q8’s standard 8-speed automatic transmission ensures that your engine is always in the right gear for every driving condition. It selects top gears for maximum freeway fuel mileage and leisurely cruising. It downshifts to lower gears for accelerating quickly around town or

hustling onto a highway entrance ramp. And Audi hasn’t sacrificed performance for style. Q8 drivers can expect sub six-second zero-to-60 times, so driving a sexy SUV doesn’t disqualify you from the cut-and-thrust fun of the stoplight grand prix! Shhhh!

Interior Excitement Although Audi effuses about the Q8’s exhilarating new exterior design, drivers and passengers live inside the vehicle. You will be happy to hear that the new Q8’s interior is no penalty box. Far from it. The designers spent as much effort to make the interior enjoyable as they did getting the exterior just right. While the Q8 is shorter than the Q7, it is wider and lower and so, despite the shorter body, still offers a spacious interior. It has standard seating for up to five passengers and generous cargo space for luggage. (Yes, your golf foursome with pro bags can hit the links in Audi Q8 style.) Car

The Audi Q8 comes available in a variety of colors, including floret silver and dragon orange.

48 BENZELBUSCHHIGHWAYS.com FALL/WINTER 2018

HW_Cover Story.indd 48

11/7/18 10:08 AM

and Driver wrote in its article at the press introduction that the Q8’s interior was more “handsome by some margin” than those of its two primary German segment competitors, pointing out that the rear-seat passengers will “feel as if they have space to stretch out, with more than ample leg and headroom.” Naturally, the seating surfaces and side panels are covered in high-quality leather, no surprise for an Audi in this class. For the driver, the central element inside the cabin is the all-new MMI touch response display. It has a black-panel look that dissolves into a large black inlay when switched off — think shiny Steinway piano gloss — creating a tranquil interior environment. Audi says that all of the esthetic design elements relate logically to one another. From the flat air vent strip to the wide center console leading to the tiptronic selector, it’s all harmonious and pleasing to the eye. The company is so proud of the swoop and contour of the interior that there’s an optional lighting package which in the dark traces the design lines of the interior and provides backlight for the three-dimensional quattro badge above the glove compartment. That option is, of course, your call!

Intuitive Operation When testing press vehicles with modern entertainment systems, I often get frustrated by how difficult and proprietary their interfaces have become. Maybe Audi has heard my carping because the Q8’s MMI infotainment operating system is as intuitive to use as a smartphone. Like the device currently in your pocket, you’ll hear and feel a click when your finger triggers a function. Audi claims that

(Top to Bottom): The Q8 can traverse all types of road conditions, thanks to its standard equipped adaptive damping suspension; with a spacious trunk, you’ll have no trouble fitting whatever you need for your journey.

its logical and flat menu structure allows fast access to various vehicle functions. As with smartphones, the Q8’s system can be personalized using configurable and movable “favorites” buttons. Audi even incorporated “Natural-language” controls that turn the Q8 into a more intelligent travel assistant. For example, you can tell the system “I’m hungry” and the Q8 will suggest neighboring restaurants. Speaking of smartphones, the Q8 has Audi’s phone box, a system that enables wireless charging for compatible smartphones. Plus, if your smartphone is loaded with your favorite tunes (or podcasts), the Bang & Olufsen 3D Advanced Sound System is said to deliver an impressive, lifelike musical experience.

Behind the Wheel The Q8 is scheduled for a fall 2018 release in the USA, making its debut as a 2019 model. However, several car magazines have driven it at the press launch in South America and have come away impressed. Motor Trend said in its June review, “…the adaptive air suspension and four-wheel steering, stood out on… twisty dirt roads. The Q8 feels quite stable on tight corners, and the well-balanced steering provides good road feedback. The peppy engine doesn’t

disappoint.” Car and Driver agrees: “… on narrow Chilean desert roads, the broad-of-beam Q8 felt unnaturally nimble…it manages curving roads with little drama and respectable pace.” Finally, the British magazine Car proclaimed: “…the Q8 is surprisingly sharp to drive… comfort levels are excellent and the cabin puts older rivals…to shame.”

Bottom Line Since Audi hasn’t posted a manufacturer’s list price yet, we can only speculate that the Q8 — as Audi’s SUV flagship — will sticker somewhere close to the price of a Q7. The Premium Q7 V6 starts at $56,400 and climbs to $65,400 for the Prestige model (options not included). We will just have to wait as the leaves turn to get the final numbers, but based on the rave reviews the Q8 has already received, a fall visit to your favorite Audi dealer (and you know who that is) may be in order.

vice — and a fascinating story to tell. The Auberge Saint-Antoine lends new meaning to historic hotel. It was constructed on an archaeological site that formerly housed wharves, cannon emplacements, warehouses and relics from the French and English colonial times. A final archaeological dig led to the discovery of several new artifacts. These precious items, some dating to the 1600s, were documented and restored. You will find them in the common areas and guest rooms as well as in the halls,

utomotive manufacturers have lots of reasons to build concept cars. Ostensibly, they want to draw attention to their brand, shine a positive light on their vision, deliver a promise of exciting future offerings and challenge their internal design and engineering teams to throw off old ideas and come back with a showstopper. A tall order, indeed. With the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury (yes, that’s the real name), Mercedes has accomplished all that and possibly a little more. It has also laid down a marker for its competitors at the top of the automotive world announcing they’d better not stop thinking, designing and creating because we just upped the ante. Let’s spend a few minutes to see how they did it.

sensual purity

In Beijing, China in April, Mercedes-Benz pulled the covers off the innovative Mercedes-Maybach concept car and, to their delight I’m sure, jaws dropped across the automotive world. Gorden Wagener, chief design officer at Daimler AG, said, “The Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury is a to-

Similar to the luxe detailing on a private jet, no detail goes unnoticed in the Ultimate Luxury. The interior features white Nappa leather seats with rose gold accents, dark ebony trim, reclining seats and an extra-wide center console for an enhanced driving experience. 58 BENZELBUSCHHIGHWAYS.com FALL/WINTER 2018

tally new archetype of a kind never seen before. Our concept combines the DNA of an SUV with that of a sedan to produce an ultra-modern SUV of three-box design.” Proudly, he added, “With sensual and pure sophistication, we have created a timeless vehicle that underscores the position of Mercedes-Maybach as the ultimate luxury brand.” Obviously, Herr Wagener is pleased with the work of his folks!

the inside scoop

Greeting the world in the expanding Chinese market, Mercedes-Maybach festooned its concept car with a lot of things the local, well-heeled consumers would love. First, many highend vehicles in China owned by prosperous business people are chauffer driven. (There’s even a “stretched” Mercedes-Benz A Class on sale there.) That’s why the folks in the back get the best seats in the house. The two rear chairlike seats offer spaciousness and comfort, in combination with a raised seating position and what can be described only as an elegant design using the finest materials. Car and Driver described the interior thus: “The four individual seats feature exquisite stitching and are covered in white leather, and there is an abundance of accents in ebony wood,

The chrome-plated radiator grille was designed to mirror the delicate pinstripes of a suit.

rose gold, and aluminum.” The use of ebony, a material that the Chinese call Magic Wood, was deliberately selected for use in the interior to send a clear message to passengers. In Mercedes-speak, that means: “The show car merges influences from the Western and Far Eastern hemispheres to deliver an appealing automotive cultural dialogue.” Most interesting, at least to me, is the elegant fine china tea set in the console between the rear seats. It has an integrated heated tray, too, so your oolong will always be at the right temperature. By the way, those rear seats recline and have leg rests to give passengers the comfort of a private jet. The pictures of the interior included from the unveiling explain better than any words the remarkable level of luxury of the Mercedes-Maybach. Mercedes-Benz boldly proclaims that the user experience inside their top-of-the-line vehicles represents the definitive embodiment of a luxury dream car. Speaking about the Mercedes-Maybach concept specifically, the auto maker states that the design language is “warmer and brighter, creating a luxurious atmosphere.” To put an exclamation point on that statement, Mercedes-Benz’s familiar ENERGIZING Comfort system — which networks the vehicle’s climate controls, music, seat heating, massage programs, ambient lighting and air fragrances — has been carried over to the new Mercedes-Maybach. Drivers can utilize six programs — Freshness, Warmth, Vitality, Joy, Comfort and Training — to help regenerate and improve concentration. This holistic comfort and infotainment system can be individually programmed and adapted for every world market.

is that you jeeves?

Mercedes-Maybach claims that the new concept car was created entirely in a “3D real-time graphic environment.” That means, like a butler, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury acts with anticipation. Instead of offering long menus and lists, the vehicle plays music to match the passenger’s current mood, knows the owner’s appointment calendar and plans the routes accordingly. Again, like a perfectly trained butler, various flavors of tea and relaxation programs are available in the rear, depending on who the passenger is.

first impressions

On seeing the new Mercedes-Maybach concept vehicle for the first time, some journalists from around the world may have been searching their Thesauruses for interesting ways to describe it. Road & Track wrote, “The front looks nice and concept-y, and those 24-inch turbine wheels are pretty sweet.” Motor Trend said, “The spacious interior looks incredibly luxurious, with quilted leather, natural wood, and polished metal covering almost every surface.” Automobile magazine observed, “Our favorite angle is head on with its chrome-plated grille with vertical bars. Low-profile headlights flank it and big air inlets with a honeycomb pattern reside below it.” Car magazine added, “The ‘Ultimate Luxury’ concept’s body is smooth and clean, in keeping with Merc’s ‘Sensual Purity’ design language.” Of course, some of the comments

were, to put it mildly, a little snarky, but that’s to be expected since new and exciting designs are almost always filled with inyour-face elements. For example, Motor Trend chimed in, “The prominent use of rose gold [in the interior] probably isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but it certainly makes a statement.” AutoWeek commented, “… parts of it…are totally wild-ass flights of fancy and parts of it… are simply there to help define what Maybach is all about.” As I offered at the start of this article, I think the last observation is essentially what well-conceived concept cars are all about and, in that regard, it’s why I think this one succeeds.

focus on details

The world market has caught up to the buying habits of USA car buyers by demanding new and exciting cross-over vehicles. It therefore comes as no surprise that the design of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury concept is based on an exclusive high-end sedan and an SUV. There are practical reasons for that shift in market toward more SUV-oriented vehicles. These include a raised seating position and greater carrying capacity for people and their stuff. Of course, nonpractical market forces include the desire for a vehicle that has athletic looks — something the new Mercedes-Mayback concept has. I particularly like the way Car magazine described the design: “The new concept vision smashes together both SUV and saloon body styles, with a notchback rear riding high on whopping 24-inch turbine alloys and jacked-up suspension. In fact, Mercedes says the Chinese market particularly loves a saloon, hence why it’s one of the Beijing [auto] show stars.” Note: saloon isn’t a tavern; it’s what the British call a sedan!

a glimpse into the future

Every detail of this refined ride exudes luxury, including the vertically split rear-view window.

Since this is the 21st century, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury was conceived as an electric vehicle with four compact permanent-magnet synchronous motors and fully variable all-wheel drive. Again, this is another nod to the Chinese market since air pollution in Beijing is a major concern. AutoWeek explained in its preview, “China is pushing hard to move its driving population into so-called ‘new energy vehicles,’ offering subsidies and other benefits to electric car buyers. In Beijing particularly, internal-combustion-powered cars are banned from entering the city one day per week; electric cars face no restrictions. So there’s a convenience factor there as well.” On a more philosophical level, while many modest-income

consumers buy electric or hybrid vehicles for economic reasons (lower maintenance outlays, lower fuel expenses and, of course, environmental concerns), luxury car buyers may not be motivated by the lure of lower ownership costs. Instead, they might be influenced by the expediency of not having to follow travel restrictions that are based on the vehicle they are driving.

geek stuff

The knock on electric vehicles is known as range anxiety: how far can you drive without running out of battery power. On top of that, how long will it take to recharge the battery, assuming you can find a charging station? Sad but true, even Mercedes can’t singlehandedly solve the complex chemistry of extended battery life. The good news is that the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury, with its powertrain that puts out a stunning 750 hp, has a battery with a usable capacity of around 80 kWh. This is predicted to give a range of more than 200 miles with a top speed (electronically limited) to 155 mph. Some more good news: a fast-charging function is standard and its DC charging functionality is based on the (widely accepted) CCS standard, allowing a charging capacity of up to 350 kW. An interesting side note is that in the Mercedes-Maybach, in just five minutes, the system can be charged to achieve an additional range of 60 miles. Finally, the Mercedes-Maybach’s battery can be charged by cable at public charging stations, conventional domestic electric outlets or, even more conveniently, induction — i.e., contactlessly transmitted by an electromagnetic field below the car.

parting thoughts

The Mercedes-Maybach concept represents the highest level of luxury and quality that Mercedes-Benz can bring to the market. The press release describes it as a vehicle “True to the principle of creating ‘the very best from the very best’” and then adds, “Mercedes-Maybach stands for the ultimate in luxury while uniting the perfection of Mercedes-Benz with the exclusivity of Maybach.” Insiders predict that we will see an actual production version at the next Los Angeles Auto Show. Based on this concept, I’m sure it will be exciting.

The Dasher’s electric metamorphosis includes twin 80hp electric motors, dual 50 amp dock charging and BMW i3 waterproof lithium-ion batteries.

Down East In Style BY CHARLIE DILLON

A

s a marine journalist, I tend to find myself in interesting situations. So, walking up to the Hinckley boatyard in Stuart, Florida, and stepping aboard Dasher, the Maine builder’s concept-turned-archetypal new model, you would have thought I’d be ready. However, nothing could have prepared me for the blissful sound of silence emanating from the fully electric-powered yacht’s “engine” — the dual BMW i3 lithium-ion batteries named, appropriately, its Whisper Drive system. In that moment, if those batteries could have spoken, they would surely have announced: the future is here. There’s something iconic about a Hinckley yacht. The Hinckley look, with heavily borrowed elements from the Down East style

made famous by Maine’s hardworking lobstermen, has beautiful hull lines to help with the oftentimes treacherous conditions that slam the northernmost coast of New England. Over time, that bold seaworthiness inherent in its design became just as much about beautiful, elegant styling, as evinced by the company’s signature teak woodworking accents. Coupled with a history of advanced composite materials (read: sturdy hulls) and a knack for implementing innovative technologies ahead of the curve, Hinckley is a brand that needs little introduction. When you see a Hinckley, you know it. There’s nothing else that looks even close. Here’s a sample of their newest boats to hit the market.

The Picnic Boat 40 features new TriGuard epoxy construction, which is comprised of aramid fiber/E-glass on the outside with a lightweight carbon fiber on the inside.

DASHER

Dasher has a presence. She’s a handsome boat with sleek, modern lines that hint at a number of technological innovations within. These include dual BMW i3 lithium-ion batteries and 3D printed titanium hardware, all seamlessly blended in a 28-foot 6-inch carbon-epoxy composite hull with carbon stringers. Minimalist by design, it features a single touchscreen that controls everything on board. While the boat has a max speed of only about 22 knots, this is a day cruiser through and through. The obvious appeal is its fully electric propulsion. The display from B&G shows how far a range you have at any given time, so you can keep track of the nearest marina with shore power. Corresponding symbols keep track of different things: an anchor for depth, a battery for the charge, a bucket for water levels (Dasher comes with a head forward). And by accepting dual 50-amp power, Dasher can gain a full charge in four hours. It’s not as simple or fast as fueling it up, but then again, you’ll never have to worry about the cost of fuel.

PICNIC BOAT 40

A fresh recipe for the classic Picnic. The 40 brings a fresh perspective to the most successful Hinckley series ever built. In nearly 90 years of building the company’s most iconic series, Hinckley set a new standard with the Picnic Boat. It continues with a completely reimagined layout that features seamless flow from transom to helm, tons of lounging space, a wet bar and full sun coverage, not to mention unsurpassed sightlines all around. Throw in a top speed of 38 knots, and this is a boat that was built for cruising in style.

SPORT BOAT 40C

Hinckley is perhaps best known for its lobster boat–style Picnic Boat series, and the company made waves last year with Dasher. But the 40c is a different animal: a fast, open boat with high-performance outboard propulsion designed to make it possible for an active family to have a big adventure, all within the span of an afternoon. There’s plenty of room for owners to get busy with the hobbies they enjoy most. If that’s fishing, there’s deck space to work lines from the cockpit and sidedecks, and the equipment list offers everything from a live well and rod storage to carbon fiber outriggers. Tubing and watersports are also a breeze, and a top speed of 63 mph (with optional power) that can handle three outboards will have the family enjoying their time on the water.

Passengers aboard the Sport Boat 40C can truly unwind. Its interior cabin features a refrigerator, cappuccino machine, cooktop and microwave.
