From Fornasetti tables to Gucci Décor pillows, these dynamic accents require no nail and hammer to achieve artful beauty.

DON GIOVANNI COLLECTION BY FORNASETTI Inspired by the Italian opera Don Giovanni, Fornasetti brings the beloved theatrical performance to life with this colorful, mesmerizing home-decor collection. Featuring multiple stand-alone pieces and accessories, the Don Giovanni line boasts vibrant red hues and artistic character interpretations. One of the collection’s prominent pieces is the Tamburo (coffee table/ bar cabinet). Fashioned from wood, it boasts a red-and-black swirled hand-lacquered motif that will stand out in any setting as well as a printed hand design around the exterior that pushes its unique aesthetic further. Topped with a pull-out compartment so you can safely store any object, it’s sure to add a quirky element to your decor. To up the drama even more, include Fornasetti’s Don Giovanni chair. The sleek black legs and seat are alluring, but what really captures the eye is the detailed backing. Featuring a red silhouette of Don Giovanni himself, Fornasetti breathes life into the main character. But shh! Don’t abruptly point out this artful seat to guests. Sit back and let the conversational piece work its magic all by itself.

the Tuareg Lamp helps give a feeling of movement within a room. Although a stationary object, its aluminum tubing resembles branches, allowing the peculiar shape to shine anywhere you place it. Wherever you station the Tuareg, it’s sure to light up your decor. VELVET CUSHIONS BY GUCCI DÉCOR Sometimes a space gets its glamour from accessories. If you’re in need of a dash of

The backing is just as stylish, boasting a dynamic design to complement the front. Simply throw them onto a couch or chair and see your room

CORAVIN WINE OPENER Wasting wine is a thing of the past with Coravin’s latest innovation, the Model Eleven. The magic lay in its ability to pour a glass of wine without uncorking the bottle (yes, you read that correctly). Wine stays perfectly preserved so you can sip from the same bottle for weeks to a year if you so choose. Simply place the fully automated device atop the bottle, press the button and watch in awe as a needle is lowered inside to extract the wine. Once the button lights up green, pour yourself a glass and enjoy. The Coravin Model Eleven replaces the removed beverage with argon (an “inert gas used in the wine making process”) to preserve the leftover wine. What’s really intriguing are the Bluetooth capabilities that allow you to connect to the device so you can monitor when it needs to be cleaned and check battery life and argon gas usage. For still more efficiency, Apple iOS users can download the Coravin Moments app. This allows you to enjoy a variety of experiences such as discovering new wines, creating pairings and maintaining a “virtual cellar” where you can snap a photo of your preferred spirit and store it for a future get-together. The Coravin Model Eleven and app will be available this September. www.coravin.com, $995.95.

IKEYP BOLT Everyone stores valuable items in their home such as passports, safety deposit box keys, family heirlooms and social security cards. With the iKeyp Bolt, you no longer have to wonder about the safest place to keep these items. Simply screw the iKeyp Bolt to a wall, create a key code, place your items inside and voila!, you have a high-security storage box inside your living space. For efficiency, sync your smartphone directly with the iKeyp Bolt to access remote unlock, reminders, notifications, updates and failed key alerts. Combine this capability with 24/7 security monitoring, backup key access and moisture control and you’ll never second-guess the safety of your valuables. Available at www.iKeyp.com, $149.

AUTONOMOUS DRIVING AT CES 2018

OLA KÄLLENIUS, MEMBER OF THE BOARD OF MANAGEMENT OF DAIMLER AG, GROUP RESEARCH AND MERCEDESBENZ CAR DEVELOPMENT, ADDRESSES CROWD.

D

r. Dieter Zetsche, the head of MercedesBenz cars and chairman of Daimler AG, was the company’s keynote speaker at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Although he spoke about several exciting innovations currently in the pipeline, he focused mostly on the unveiling of a fully autonomous prototype vehicle. Dr. Zetsche described the autonomous car of the future as a sort of luxury “carriage” that could provide a peaceful, relaxing oasis for riders. The prototype was bedecked with touch screens and featured a space-age floating control panel that would let any rider take control of the car. In a separate interview with Men’s Health magazine, Dr. Michael Hafner, Head of Autonomous Driving and Active Safety at Mercedes-Benz, spoke of the various “levels” of automotive autonomy. A car with no autonomous driving technology would be at Level Zero.

28 BENZELBUSCHHIGHWAYS.com SPRING 2018

Level One and Two technology encompass features such as adaptive cruise control and Mercedes-Benz Drive Pilot. Dr. Hafner said, “Levels Three, Four and Five would describe systems that let the car do a lot more of the driving.” Based on Mercedes-Benz’s extensive analysis conducted in their Intelligent World Drive — semiautomated test-drives of an S-Class carried out in Germany, China, Australia, South Africa and the USA — vehicles at Level Three on up to fully autonomous cars are closer to reality than you might think. Hafner said, “2020 and 2021 is the timeframe when we hope we’ll bring those systems into markets.” Back in the day, many new safety systems such as air bags and anti-lock braking were met with skepticism. Today, Mercedes-Benz has gathered real-world data to justify the extraordinary effort and cost to develop vehicles

You will learn more distances and use my own autonomous systems, and about CASE in future editions of Highways. I get out of the car after five hours driving without any stops, I’m relaxed.” While the CES presentations were aimed to inform and excite participants about near-future developments, Dr. Hafner also spoke about current products and how far along the company is in its goal to make the demonstrated prototype a marketplace reality. Hafner is quoted as saying that the new S-Class raises MercedesBenz Intelligent Drive to the next level. He added, “We are approaching the goal of automated driving more purposefully and faster than many people suspect. From the autumn of 2017, the new S-Class will be able to support its driver considerably better than all systems which have been available to date.” The new and considerably enhanced driving-assistance functions available in the new S-Class will take the Mercedes-Benz owner closer than ever toward the autonomous driving goal. double trouble

Project One was a hypercar with no comparison — until Cigarette Racing unveiled the 515 Project ONE powerboat. From what I could tell, there was nothing wrong with the MercedesAMG Project One. In its debut last year, the F1-inspired concept car had gorgeous bodywork to ogle, including an air intake mounted on the cabin roof that came complete with a fin. Word was that the Project One could summon more than 1,000 horsepower, punching from a standing start to 124 mph in 6 seconds. Let me write that slower. Six. Seconds. A car — sorry, hypercar — like this didn’t need anything to complement it, right? How would you even complement something like this?

30 BENZELBUSCHHIGHWAYS.com SPRING 2018

By taking its design to the water, that’s how. There, making its debut at the 2018 Miami International Boat Show in February, was the 515 Project ONE powerboat by Cigarette Racing. In case you missed the resemblance, a full-scale model of the MercedesAMG Project One was on display on the docks (how they got it there I have no idea). It certainly did its job reminding everyone of the shared design inspiration: both car and boat were outfitted in matching matte black and silver paint. If you think this is the first partnership between the two racing companies, think again. The two have collaborated on a bevy of floating fantasies inspired by AMG-branded autos. Last year witnessed the debut of the GT R-inspired, 50-foot GT R Marauder to celebrate AMG’s 50th

BY SIMON MURRAY

anniversary. How do you top that? By taking inspiration from what Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management at Mercedes-AMG, described as the “most ambitious and awe-inspiring vehicle yet.” While the similarities between the $2.8-million hypercar and the $2-million special-edition powerboat aren’t easily determined — beyond a need for delirious speeds on water and land — trust me, they exist. Namely: carbon fiber. That lightweight but strong material is used liberally in both car and boat. Such technological advancements, even in a year’s time, give the 515 Project ONE — 51’5” in length, with an increased beam of 9’6” — 30 percent greater surface area than that of the 50-foot Marauder, while still providing similar performance and an exhilarating 140-mph top speed.

Kevlar and E-glass are used copiously from stem to stern as well. The Cigarette Racing Team worked closely with Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer for Daimler AG, Mercedes-AMG’s parent company, to design the hallmark characteristics of the boat. Such close attention to detail extends inside the cabin, with extensive use of Dinamica upholstery — ultra-light, high-strength microfiber used in the Project One hypercar — and seatbacks constructed of exposed-weave carbon fiber. “Mercedes-AMG and Cigarette Racing both have racing as part of their DNA, which makes us natural partners to work together to continue to push the limits of design and high performance,” says Skip Braver, CEO of Cigarette Racing. Compared to last year’s Marauder,

the beamier 515 Project ONE adds an additional seat, allowing six passengers to be comfortably seated when blasting across the open ocean. Powering the boat is a pair of Mercury Racing 1,550-horsepower engines. Also featured are Cigarette’s signature aggressive shoulders, which rise in the rear of the boat and allow the integration of a large sun cushion on the flat exposed-weave carbonfiber hatch — despite the tall engines beneath — for the person who doesn’t just want to go fast but also wants to catch some sun. That might be the only place to get burned on this boat, because there isn’t much out there that’s keeping up with this water-bound rocket. But on land? The Project One, which has a top speed of 217 mph, can certainly give it a run for its money. What a pair.

THE 515 PROJECT ONE IS THE NINTH COLLABORATION BOAT PRODUCED BY CIGARETTE RACING AND MERCEDES-AMG. INSPIRED BY ITS SUPER CAR COUNTERPART, THE BOAT IS FASHIONED WITH CARBON FIBER AND CAN FIT UP TO SIX PASSENGERS. BENZELBUSCHHIGHWAYS.com SPRING 2018

BY NICOLE FONZINO

ROOFTOP RETREATS Nothing beats New York City during the warmer months, especially when it comes to its social scene. Celebrate the changing of the seasons in true New York fashion: on the rooftops. From premier cocktails to gorgeous exteriors to picture-perfect views, there’s no better way to experience the city we all know and love than from the top of its skyscrapers.

MAGIC HOUR ROOFTOP BAR & LOUNGE At the Moxy Times Square, Magic Hour doesn’t indicate the start of happy hour, but is rather the name of the hotel’s 10,000-square-foot urban amusement-park rooftop bar that’s rising to the top of New York’s social scene. Operated by the TAO Group, Magic Hour creates a carnival-like atmosphere for adults to revel in. Topiary animals, elephant light fixtures and a rotating carouselinspired seating area adorn the exotic space. With five designated areas, Magic Hour boasts both an indoor and outdoor presence and is winterized during the colder months, so guests can play all year long. Perhaps the most alluring attraction is Foreplay, a mini golf course that features animal statues in sexy poses. But the party doesn’t stop at the decor. Magic Hour’s menu delivers a

creative take on “fair foods” such as carnival potatoes, corn hush puppies, boozy cupcakes and Cracker Jacks, as well as everything from innovative cocktails to the wines, beers and champagnes. Here, everyone can find something to sip on that’s absolutely magical. Further upping the playfulness, certain drinks are served in popcorn buckets, disco balls and ceramic stiletto heels to share with friends. Mix that with stellar views of the Empire State Building and you’ve got yourself the perfect NYC hotspot for an evening of fun. Need anymore convincing to spend a night at Magic Hour? LOOPY DOOPY ROOFTOP BAR AT THE CONRAD The Conrad New York is known citywide for its contemporary art displays, so it’s only fitting that the rooftop bar, Loopy Doopy, is named after one of its most prized installations: Loopy Doopy (Blue and Purple) by artist Sol LeWitt. Drawing its inspiration from this work, the bar is outfitted with purple accessories, including lounge pillows, menu covers and outdoor lighting. Loopy Doopy sits 16 stories high and offers stunning panoramic views of Lower Manhattan, New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty. The seasonal rooftop, which opens in April, is known

hopped up LOVE IT OR HATE IT, THE WIDELY POPULAR IPA IS HERE TO STAY.

CONGRATULATIONS! IF YOU’RE READING THIS, THEN YOU have officially lived long enough to see a craft beer renaissance in the United States. Or, conversely, you are young enough to have lived your entire life during a period of sustained growth in the craft beer market. If you’re under 21, this article is of limited use to you at this time. You have my sympathies. According to the Brewers Association, the number of craft brewers nationwide has gone from eight (!) in 1980 to 537 in 1994 to more than 6,000 in 2018. The number of new breweries in the planning stages is skyrocketing. This is an unprecedented boom. It’s hard to think of another industry that has undergone such phenomenal growth so fast in a similar 40-year time frame. (That shining star of production, the Model T, comes to mind.) Heady stuff, right? Simply put, there has never been a better time to drink beer in the U.S. than right now. Today, you can go to the nearest liquor store — or bar, restaurant, ramshackle saloon or refined taphouse — and choose among a hundred distinct kinds. But this craft explosion wouldn’t be possible without the venerable IPA, or India Pale Ale. As legend has it, the beer was invented by the British during their efforts to colonize India. Characterized by an abundance of hops — the green, cone-shaped flowers of the female hop plant, also known by its Seussian name Humulus lupulus — today’s IPAs can be strong and bitter, with an aroma of citrus, pine or flowers. And they are as popular as all get out. Here are some of the best IPAs coming out of the East Coast.

— generally known for a juicy, luscious mouthfeel and opaque, hazy appearance — you may have to travel some distance. Boston is a good bet, as this Framingham, MA-based brewery sells primarily to restaurants and distributors in Massachusetts. Even so, the brewery recommends calling for availability first, as many sell out quickly, including the Cat’s Meow.

New England-style IPA’s usual aromas of fruitiness — in this case, tangerines and ripe stone fruits — greet the nose followed by flavors of grapefruit peel, fresh navel oranges and light malt sweetness. This has a smooth finish with a touch of grapefruit bitterness at the end. Available year round, it’s definitely worth the trip.

BROOKLYN BREWERY’S DEFENDER IPA; ALLAGASH BREWING CO.’S BRETT IPA; AND EVIL TWIN BREWING’S MODERN IPA.

BRETT IPA ALLAGASH BREWING CO. Brewed: Portland, ME ABV: 7.1% You would have to be a huge beer nerd to know what the Brett stands for. No, it’s not a man; it’s a yeast. During transport overseas, the first India Pale Ales were stored in wooden barrels where, beer experts suppose, some ales naturally acquired brettanomyces, a form of wild yeast. Brett IPA plays off this piece of brewing lore by pairing brettanomyces — a yeast that exhibits itself as ripe fruit rather than strong funk or sourness — with multiple varieties of fruit-forward hops. Allagash Brewing Co.’s take on the Brett style of IPA results in tropical flavors that pair nicely with the beer’s lightly hopped body: a heady bouquet redolent of citrus, pineapple and passion fruit, with a finish that is mostly dry and has a little acidity with moderate, easygoing bitterness. The taste is on the stronger side of IPAs. As of last year, it is available in 12 oz. bottles. According to Allagash, a portion of the proceeds from this beer go to benefit the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland, ME, so you can feel good while you sip.

DEFENDER IPA BROOKLYN BREWERY Brewed: Brooklyn, NY ABV: 5.9% Each year, a new Brooklyn Defender emerges to carry the banner of great beer. Past projects have highlighted renowned artists and experimental hops. Now, the sixth Defender is ready to be unveiled in sixpacks and kegs everywhere. Brooklyn Brewery urges us to #DefendBeer with this year’s Defender, a West Coast-style IPA (read: hoppy as hell!). As the official beer of New York Comic Con, Defender IPA is “heroically” hopped featuring strong notes of tropical fruit, well-muscled hop bitterness and

40 BENZELBUSCHHIGHWAYS.com SPRING 2018

an incredibly dry finish. According to Brooklyn Brewery, the graphic “springs from the Jack Kirby era of comics, with a striking profile, the astonishing ability to leap tall buildings with an armload of kegs, and a trusty beer can utility belt.” The reddish coloration owes to a dash of roasted malt. Tasting notes are characterized by bold, fruity sharpness and an intensely resinous nose smash. Brooklyn Brewery recommends pairing this beer with grilled vegetables, barbecue, spicy dishes and Gouda. No cape required.

LIL’ HEAVEN SESSION IPA TWO ROADS BREWING CO. Brewed: Stratford, CT ABV: 4.8% Quick history lesson: the most common explanation for Session IPA harkens back to the days of WWI England. Workers were allotted two drinking periods, or sessions, of four hours each workday. (Jealous much?) This called for a lighter beer than your everyday stout or porter. So, the less alcoholic Session IPA was invented to keep Brits from being too sloppy on the job. Session purists demand that the style (or substyle) be defined as any beer no higher than three or four

percent ABV. However, today most categorize 5% ABV or less a true session. Clocking in at 4.8% ABV, Two Roads Brewing Co.’s take on the Session IPA is the Lil’ Heaven with tastes of tropical fruits — specifically passion fruit, grapefruit and apricots. It finishes with just enough toasted malt character to balance. This is soft and delicate with a malty sweetness mid-palate.

MODERN IPA EVIL TWIN BREWING Brewed: Two Roads Brewing Co., CT ABV: 6% Founded by Danish-born Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergsø in 2010, Evil Twin Brewing has been called “nomadic” because the beers are brewed not in one location, but in 10 breweries around the world. (Evil Twin says it’s working

42 BENZELBUSCHHIGHWAYS.com SPRING 2018

on opening its first physical brewery in Ridgewood, NY later this year.) At this time, these beers are still fairly rare, because of the relatively small batches in which they are brewed. If you can, you should get your hands on the Modern IPA. My sources tell me you can find it on tap at top restaurants in New York such as Eleven Madison and the Nomad. It’s that good. This amalgamation of the West Coast- and New England-style IPAs features piney dankness combined with layers of citrus and tropical fruits, a testament to the state of the IPA in America as we know it. It’s a tasty tribute to a beloved and iconic beer style. A palette of understated hop flavors, fruity and crisp, cuts through the dankness. This is in stark contrast to Evil Twin’s Retro IPA, a 1985-style IPA, that you should also give a try — if you can find it, that is.

WHEN A CAR COMPANY HAS AN ICONIC MODEL

in its line blessed with an extremely loyal fan base, it approaches making significant changes the way, I assume, porcupines procreate – very carefully. And so it is in 2018 that Mercedes-Benz will offer its growing list of G-Wagen customers (G-Wagen is short for Geländewagen or, “cross-country vehicle”) a slightly bigger, better-handling, more refined but still burly iconic off-roader as a 2019 model.

e e

brief history The first G-Wagens were envisioned in the early 1970s as military vehicles by the Shah of Iran (he was a significant shareholder at the time). By the late 1970s, Styer-Daimler-Puch, an Austrian manufacturer, started production with a no-nonsense, slab-sided shape, plus three locking differential mechanicals that immediately set the vehicle apart from everything else on the market. Over time, civilian models witnessed the addition of refinements such as an automatic transmission, air conditioning, luxury seating, central door locking and interior wood accents. You might be surprised to learn that by 1986, more than 50,000 G-Wagens had found homes worldwide. Despite their global appeal, the United States market remained officially off limits (only “gray market” vehicles made it across the Pond). That changed in 2002 when the V8-powered G500 was imported. Despite the six-figure price tag, more than 3,000 G-Wagens were sold to American customers. Their phenomenal off-road ability, exclusivity and cachet were seen as market drivers.

change for the better Sometimes change just for the sake of change isn’t a good thing. Think New Coke versus Old Coke. But for 2019, the newly redefined G-Wagen looks to have hit all of the right notes. Car magazines testing these offroaders were universally pleased with the respectful but welcome changes when compared to the prior G-Wagen. A quick glance will tell you that the exterior design has been softened a bit (look carefully and you’ll see a curved windshield), but the majority of the changes were made to the interior and the drivetrain. These changes to the G-Class follow the philosophy Mercedes-Benz calls Sensual Purity: a desire to make exciting improvements that remain true to the character of the original. You see this in details such as the door hinges positioned on the outside and the surfacemounted front hood, both classic design elements carried over to the new generation. Here are the most notable things that Mercedes-Benz has done to improve this brand icon.

size really does matter First, the new G-Class is 2.1 inches longer and 4.8 inches wider. Not only does this give the vehicle a more aggressive stance (as if it really needed that), it also provides front and rear passengers with additional space for greater comfort. Front-seat passengers have 1.5 more inches of legroom, 1.5 inches more shoulder room and 2.7 inches extra elbowroom. Rear-seat passengers gained nearly 6 inches of much-appreciated legroom, 1.1 inches of shoulder room and 2.2 inches added at the elbows. Besides greater legroom, entry to the rear was made easier thanks to wider door openings. Another subtle change was the higher positioning of the seats to improve outward visibility.

the strong silent type The design team at Mercedes-Benz admits that making the G-Class better without destroying the elements that

make up its appeal was an extremely hard task. “Enhancing an icon such as the G-Class in technological terms was both a challenge and an opportunity at the same time. Each part and every bolt came under close scrutiny,” explains Dr. Gunnar Güthenke of the Off-Road Product Group. “With the body, our main focus was on increasing the vehicle rigidity and the connections between the suspension and drivetrain with the ladder-type frame.” Paramount was the desire to redefine the quality of handling both on and off the road. This required a change that some fans of the original G-Wagens might consider heresy: a complete redesign of the front suspension! However, through a close collaboration between Mercedes-Benz GmbH and Mercedes-AMG GmbH, an independent suspension with double-wishbone front axle in combination with a rigid rear axle achieved the goal of better overall drivability without affecting off-road prowess. The suspension was reengineered without changing the vehicle’s ground clearance, a measurement that’s vital in extreme off-road situations. The engineers admit that as part of their work on the new G-Wagen they had to fight for every millimeter. The raising of the axles made a crucial contribution in this area. Then they added a strut tower brace in the engine compartment to achieve the ruggedness objectives. These technical and engineering modifications help ensure good drivability when an owner goes beyond the asphalt. Mercedes-Benz proclaims the new G-Class front axle is so robust

that its off-road performance and off-road capabilities are noticeably improved when compared to those of its predecessors. High praise indeed. With this new front-axle design comes electric rack and pinion power steering, replacing the prior model’s recirculating ball design. Besides giving the driver better road feel, it also allowed engineers to add a parking-assist technology feature. Of course, just improving the off-road capabilities wasn’t enough. The new G-Class also had to perform better on the road. Testing by several noted automobile magazines show that the new G-Wagen is significantly more agile, dynamic and comfortable than its predecessor. Their verdict: thanks to its traditional ladder-type frame, the three 100-percent differential locks and LOW RANGE off-road gear reduction, the new G remains a true G.

have a seat For your utility chores, the rear seats can be folded down 40, 60 or 100 percent. More importantly, as you might imagine in any Mercedes-Benz luxury vehicle, the seats in the G-Class are leather clad and ergonomically designed for superior comfort and lateral support. They also come equipped with lots of convenience features such as the driver’s seat memory function, front- and rear-seat heating elements and front-seat luxury head restraints. Ride comfort can be further enhanced with the optional Active Multicontour Seat Package. This includes massage functions, climate-controlled seats and rapid seat heating. The package also offers electrically

adjustable lumbar supports for the driver and front passenger. The side bolsters of the seat cushions and backrests of the active multicontour seats include integrated air chambers that fill or empty continually depending on the driving dynamics. This feature provides better support for the seating positions of driver and front passenger and offers more lateral support during hard cornering. As is typical of the engineering in all MercedesBenz vehicles, the Active Multicontour Seat Package is recommended by experts from the German spinal health organization, Aktion Gesunder RĂźcken e.V.

a dash of class While the standard instrument panel (IP) has undergone a redesign for 2019, it still features the classic and timeless

tube-look analogue round dials found in earlier G-Class models. That means fans of the classic round instruments won’t be presented (disappointed?) with a space-age IP. However, as with the new E-Class and S-Class, an instrument cluster in the form of a large display showing digital instruments in the driver’s direct field of vision and a central display above the middle console can be ordered. With this optional IP are two 12.3-inch displays blended visually into a Widescreen Cockpit beneath a fully bonded glass panel. This design gives drivers the option to choose among three different styles for the displays: Classic, Sport and Progressive. The driver can also select appropriate data and views according to individual driving needs. The touchpad in this optional system gives fingertip impulses and audible feedback so drivers can

use it through the controller in the center console without taking their eyes off the road. Standard on the new G-Class is 3-zone climate control with vents shaped like the newly restyled headlights. Something never envisioned in the first G-Wagens is the 590-watt Burmester sound system, connected to 16 high-quality speakers. While we’re still talking about the interior, for the first time the G-Wagen has real cup holders. Not earth-shattering, for sure, but a much-needed addition that enhances the day-to-day livability of the vehicle.

under the hood The heart of every Mercedes-Benz is the motor. If you’re not convinced, ask the competitors in Formula

One who have struggled to catch up to the AMG Petronas F1 team’s clear horsepower and reliability advantage, resulting in four consecutive world manufacturer championships. The new G-Class comes standard with a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 rated at 416 hp and, crucial for real-world and off-road driving, 450 lb-ft of torque that delivers its full power at a very low 2,000 RPM. While some previous American car buyers have been lured by a model’s horsepower numbers, the true cognoscenti, especially those in the know about off-road driving needs, pay more attention to an engine’s torque figures. High torque values, ones that come on strong at low RPMs (only possible through the magic of turbocharging), translate into more surefooted control and power in difficult, slow and steady off-roading. While the engine for the G 550 is unchanged from the prior model’s, performance is improved thanks to substantial weight reductions (reported to be more than 370 lbs.) achieved by extensive use of aluminum components. Also, an all-new 9-speed gearbox has replaced the prior model’s 7-speed automatic transmission. You can expect the 2019 G 550 G-Class to do the 0-60 sprint in less than 6 seconds. Despite its offroad capabilities, the new G-Class will be no slouch in the stoplight grand prix!

when the going gets tough With the new G-Class, a feature called DYNAMIC SELECT is available with up to five driving modes. This allows the driver to adjust the vehicle’s dynamic characteristics at the touch of a button. Depending on the chosen mode – Comfort, Sport, Eco or Individual

— the system modifies the performance of the engine, transmission, suspension, steering and other assistance systems as determined by the driver’s needs. For example, in Eco mode, fuel economy is optimized. In Sport mode, the transmission’s shift points, engine’s throttle response and steering system’s responsiveness are changed. The Individual mode allows more exacting drivers to configure their own preferred vehicle settings. The DYNAMIC SELECT system has a host of options available in combination with the new suspension and the optional Adaptive Damping System. With these, the driver is able to modify the vehicle’s damping (i.e., suspension) characteristics in Sport and Comfort modes using the DYNAMIC SELECT switch. This means the G-Class detects the particular condition of the road and sets the appropriate suspension damping, so that, for example, the response for off-road terrain is stiffer. Conversely, in Sport mode the G-Class yields a more agile response. Because the G-Wagen came to life as a military vehicle designed for the rigors of desert and off-road use, the newer, more posh edition had better deliver. And thanks to its new advanced drive modes, it does. Mercedes-Benz says the improved off-road handling characteristics are due to the model’s new G-Mode. The vehicle changes to G-Mode independent of the chosen driving mode as soon as one of the three differential locks has been activated or the LOW RANGE off-road reduction gear has been engaged. This off-road mode adapts the adjustable damping of the chassis and the steering as well as the accelerator characteristic, avoids unnecessary gearshifts and thus ensures optimum control and maximum off-road capability. The 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class celebrated its world premiere at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and will go on sale in the U.S. in late 2018. If that’s not exciting enough, an AMG tuned model is planned!

The Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart and the Audi Forum in Ingolstadt are two of the best places to learn how cars, trucks, motorcycles and buses forever changed the world. (Stuttgart is also home to MercedesBenz’s headquarters; Ingolstadt is home to Audi’s.) Both buildings are standout examples of engineering and design, as are the distinctive, rare and historic vehicles inside. It’s easy to spend an entire day at either one marveling at the forward march of motorized technology, including the future of driverless vehicles. Visitors receive a multilingual, multitrack audio guide and choose from historic, social or technical interpretations at each stop. Don’t pass up the track for kids. It’s shorter with fewer details, but offers just as much insight. Daimler and Benz were competitors until shortly after WWI, when the government ordered them to merge to save money. Before that, Daimler renamed his company in honor of one of his largest customers and supporters, the Austrian entrepreneur and race driver Emil Jellinek, whose daughter was named Mercedes. The first combined Mercedes-Benz brand vehicles were produced in 1926. The three-pointed star logo represents air, sea and land, since the company made engines and entire vehicles for all three. They included so-called “lighter than air” dirigibles by Daimler’s longtime engineering associate, Wilhelm Maybach, some of which are displayed at the Zeppelin Museum in Friedrichshafen, on Lake Constance. Follow the Mercedes-Benz Museum’s circular ramp down to floors grouped by era or category, including racecars and special-use vehicles such as ambulances

and fire trucks. Not surprisingly, the iconic 1950s gullwing roadster is one of the most popular models on display. There are several coupes and convertibles. Although vehicles in the collection are never sold, the gullwings are each worth millions. Only two 1955 300 SLR “Uhlenhaut Coupe” vehicles were produced. One is on display here, as is the 300 SLR racing legend Stirling Moss drove to victory in the Mille Miglia that year. Additional racecars appear in the display of Silver Arrows. Another rare car is the handsome 1936 500K roadster, here in “copcatcher red” with an elegant buttercream yellow interior. It was the most powerful street vehicle of its time, with 160 horsepower emanating from its supercharged Kompressor engine capable of 100 mph. Fewer than 400 were produced, and only a handful survive. The 500K was one of the most expensive cars of its time, the equivalent of $500,000 today. That’s about double the price of a current model 6.0L V12 biturbo engine AMG S65, one of the priciest in today’s Mercedes-Benz stable. As with most of the world’s museums, in addition to

his own company in 1903, making luxury vehicles similar to what Gottlieb Daimler was producing. He sold the company to his partners a few years later to start a new one but lost the rights to use his name. Horch means “hark” (“to listen” in German), so he launched the new company with the Latin equivalent, Audi. Soon after, Audi Automobilwerke merged with DKW and Wanderer Auto Union. During the Depression, Auto Union merged with the orginal Horch company, reviving the Audi name. Audi’s four-ring logo represents the four merged brands. Significant models of each are on display at the Forum. They include several by the ubiquitous engineer/designer Ferdinand Porsche, who freelanced for just about everybody before forming his own company focusing on racing and sports cars. Arranged mostly by brand, a prominent area is devoted to the Quattro, the world’s first massproduced full-time all-wheeldrive vehicle. This is the postwar achievement that put Audi on the automotive map. A 1982 model on display is a five-cylinder in-line 200 hp turbo version. It helped launch Audi into a sporty, highperformance brand. Other significant vehicles include a 1931 DKW Front F1 Roadster, the

world’s first mass-produced frontwheel-drive vehicle and the least expensive vehicle on the German market at the time, and the 1965 Auto Union 1000 Sp Roadster, with a one-piece wraparound panorama windshield that was revolutionary in its day. Although the exterior was modeled on the Ford Thunderbird’s, the engine wasn’t. The Auto Union’s puny 3-cylinder in-line, 2-stroke engine had a top speed of 87 mph, compared with the T-Bird’s basic and hunky 300 hp V8 powerhouse offered that same year. The star of the exhibit may be the cream-yellow and black 1932 Horch 670 Sport-Cabriolet, the first V12 produced by Horch, featuring sinuous, sweeping fender lines. The hydraulic valve-clearance adjuster was ahead of its time. Only 58 vehicles were produced. Rarer still is the 1938 Horch 855 Special Roadster, in gleaming black, one of only seven produced, with a front end long enough to house an 8-cylinder in-line engine that could kick out 120 hp at 3,600 rpm. It is exhibited near a fascinating cutaway of a 1925 Audi Type M Pullman Limousine, exposing the handcrafted wooden body. The Audi Forum is open daily, as are its restaurants. Factory tours include the paint shop and the A3 assembly line, available weekdays

A Audi is one of the fastest-growing premium automobile brands in the United States. In fact, Audi was the only premium manufacturer in the U.S. to grow steadily in 2017. Sales were up 7.8 from 2016 to 226,511 units. December 2017 saw Audi celebrate its 84th record-breaking month in a row. Pundits caution that if you’re standing still, you’re really moving backward. So instead of just popping the champagne corks, Audi got back to work and is presenting what many will see as a daring new car for the American market: the S5 Sportback.

Hatching A Plot Alleged experts forewarn carmakers that America doesn’t like hatchbacks. I can’t tell you why they think this — I have owned several — but for the so-called opinion makers, attaching the word hatchback to a vehicle is like wearing a tuxedo with white socks and brown shoes. So not cool! Maybe they demur because originally hatchbacks were lowpriced, gas-and-go economy cars. Naturally, Audi must have heeded those canards because they have wisely called their new S5 a Sportback. “Sport” sounds much

more appealing than “hatch!” Even so, when you squint at this new model, you will see a wide, useful and beautifully executed, ahem, hatch. No apologies needed, by the way.

Seeing Is Believing The new S5 Sportback is truly striking. The clever way Audi’s designers integrated the innovative rear opening into the A5 design reminds you more of their sexy two-door coupe than the four-door sedan. When I was walking around my local Audi dealer’s lot, I initially mistook the Sportback for the

coupe. Only after I learned to look for the distinctive brushed aluminum accent “swoosh” surrounding the small rear windows was I able to spot one from a distance. Of course, Audi didn’t build the S5 Sportback to tweak the noses of hatchback critics. They know that all premium automobile buyers don’t need an SUV such as their Q series vehicles. They realize too that these buyers only occasionally need extra space to carry passengers, tote luggage for a weekend getaway or take trips to the links with their clubs. The S5 Sportback has a generous 22 cubic feet of cargo space behind its backseat. I call that SUV-like practicality in an Armani suit.

When “S” Goes Before “A” The Audi A5 is a dandy: beautiful, safe and comfortable. If you drive

one, I’m betting you’ll love it. The V-6 motor delivers 273 lb-ft of torque and 252 hp. When equipped with a seven-speed S-tronic® dualclutch automatic transmission, it can zip to 60 mph in just 5.6 seconds. The A5 Coupe is available with a slick-shifting six-speed manual transmission. How neat is that? (I’m smiling as I type since my personal Audi daily-drive is so equipped.) As pleasing as the A5 is, though, the S5 tops it. Blessed with an innovative, more powerful motor, the all-new V-6 comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission, produces 354 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. That’s 81 hp more than the A5 and 21 more than the supercharged V-6 that drove the previous S5s. While horsepower means just numbers on a page to some, the new motor delivers real-world

benefits that translate into improved performance: 0-60 happens in 4.3 seconds, and the S5 Sportback’s quarter-mile top speed is 108 mph. That’s quite impressive for a four-door luxury car and stronger than many other cars with sporting pretensions. Exciting acceleration is important because, even though this isn’t a car designed for the rigors of the racetrack, getting safely and quickly onto the parkway is an easier, more stress-free jaunt. Thanks to Audi’s remarkable technology designed into the allnew 8-speed tiptronic transmission, precise fuel injection and turbocharging, the S5 Sportback delivers power without sacrificing fuel efficiency. Even simplesounding technological tweaks, such as the transmission’s switching to an efficient “freewheeling” mode when the driver lifts off the gas pedal at

highway speeds, will benefit owners when they visit the gas pump. You might be surprised to learn that the powerful and luxurious S5 Sportback has earned an EPA highway rating of 30-mpg, 21-mpg city and a combined estimate of 24 mpg.

with minimal brake intervention. Also available to buyers looking for the maximum sporty grip is the optional sport differential which distributes torque between the rear wheels during brisk cornering just like world-class racecars.

Get A Grip

Suspend Your Belief

An acquaintance of mine and fellow car geek has a house buried deep in the frosty hills of the lower Hudson Valley. In the winter months, the roads are slick, gravel-covered and snowy. In his garage, you’ll find not one or two Audis, but three. He enthuses that the strength of Audi’s chassis and the sure grip of Quattro technology have made him a confirmed believer. As Philip the Good of Burgundy is alleged to have said about his wines: “None other will I have.” Deep inside, the S5 Sportback, despite luxury accommodations and on-road prowess, is still a Quattro. Audi claims that its allwheel-drive technology makes a major contribution to the car’s sporty handling. Like a racecar, it distributes the power slightly more to the rear wheels in normal driving conditions. Racecar drivers love that. If needed, the majority of the engine’s power can be directed to the axle with the better traction. Audi calls this “wheel-select” torque control and states it optimizes handling and stability in fast corners

A lot of people think that horsepower is the secret to a great car. However, if you ask an experienced racecar driver for an opinion, you’ll hear words such as neutral balance, predictable handling and suspension refinement as often as you hear about the engine. These elusive but extremely important characteristics derive from how well the car’s suspension has been integrated into the overall design. Audi realizes this and has given the S5 Sportback an all-new S sport suspension. This includes monotube shock absorbers (i.e., dampers) and a five-link suspension at both the front and rear. Through the magic of their adaptive Drive Select system, Audi’s continuous damping control (CDC) allows the driver to manage the characteristics of the engine and suspension over a wide variety of driving conditions. Audi knows its customers, so they don’t expect many to take their S5 Sportback to racetrack driving events. In real-world driving, however, the S5 Sportback delivers crisp and entertaining handling.

62 BENZELBUSCHHIGHWAYS.com SPRING 2018

GO TOP DOWN IN THE S5 CABRIOLET WITH LUXE FEATURES INCLUDING A 252-HP TURBOCHARGED ENGINE, ALUMINUM TRIMARAN INLAYS AND EXCEPTIONAL HI-TECH EXTRAS.

To add to the fun, if you enjoy the challenges of driving briskly on twisty two-lane blacktop, I recommend you order the $2,500 S Sport package. It includes a technology right from the exotic sports cars called torque vectoring. Having driven cars with and without this technology on a racetrack, I can attest you will want the help of torque vectoring when you’re in a tight corner! Despite the nearly 1.0-g lateral grip possible with the right rubber (i.e., summer performance tires), the S5 Sportback’s ride is firm without being harsh. We all know that’s really important when driving in our metro area’s mean streets!

Safe Not Sorry Too many people equate automotive safety with size, mass and crash strength alone. These are known as passive safety features. As is typical of German cars (because of autobahn high speeds), Audis have always had both world-class passive safety features and significant active safety features as well. The highly responsive handling and powerful brakes, standard on the S5 Sportback, are active safety features owners will use regularly. Being able to react quickly to steer around an incident or stop well before an obstacle means you may never need

any of Audi’s legendary passive safety strengths. Speaking of crash safety, as I write this the S5 Sportback is still too new to be tested by the government or the insurance safety group. However, standard on all S5 Sportbacks are front and rear automatic emergency braking technologies, front-facing collision warnings, rear-end cross-traffic monitoring and alerts, blind-spot monitoring and front and rear parking sensors. Desirable safety options such as adaptive cruise control (it applies the brakes if traffic ahead slows), lane-keeping

assist and automatic high-beam headlights are included in the Driver Assistance package but only for the Prestige models. All of that tells me that the S5 Sportback is a typical Audi: safe and secure.

Have A Seat Although the S5 Sportback’s new exterior is the first thing you notice, the inside hasn’t been neglected. Shoulder room for the driver and front-seat passenger has been expanded, as has the all-important knee room for those in the rear seat. There are three climate-control zones, so even your most sensitive

BENZELBUSCHHIGHWAYS.com SPRING 2018

companions will find a temperature to make them happy. In addition to the heated front seats with massage functions, two optional features I love are the heated steering wheel and cooled front seats. If I were ordering an S5 Sportback, I would tick those boxes on the order form.

Road Ready I managed to snag a test drive in a 2018 Audi S5 Sportback in time for our editorial deadline. Sitting behind the wheel, I took in the stylish, crisp and inviting interior. The seats, complete with the massaging option, were beautiful (love the contrast stitching), supportive and comfortable. A quick press of the START button brought the powerful V-6 to life followed by a neat rumble at idle. I set the mode switch to Dynamic and took off on the twisty back roads of northern New Jersey. Steering was crisp and precise, allowing me easily to place the car in the corner exactly where I wanted it. On an open stretch, I used the paddle shifters to downshift to second and then blasted up through redline. The turbocharged motor responded and I was in “Sorry officer, I won’t do this again” territory! On a more practical side, the rear-seat room was comfortable for normal-sized adults. I was worried that the Sportback roofline would

64 BENZELBUSCHHIGHWAYS.com SPRING 2018

be too low, but my six-foot, snackenlarged frame fit nicely. The trunk space, without lowering the back seat, is cavernous. After folding away the panels and backseat, I saw SUV levels of carrying space. After my all-too-short drive, I brought the car back, reluctantly. As I walked to my personal Audi A3,

I glanced over my shoulder a few times admiringly, something I think all owners will do too.

One More Thing Along with the new S5 Coupe and S5 Sportback, Audi is offering a restyled S5 Cabriolet. For 2018, it features an acoustic folding roof that helps

absorb the noise normally associated with other drop-top automobiles. Thanks to its strength and the technology employed, the roof can be raised at up to 31 mph. Like the S5 Sportback, the Cabriolet is powered by a 354-hp turbocharged V-6 motor and offers similar performance figures for 0-60 and quarter-mile times.

One great feature unique to the S5 Cabriolet are small heating vents that blow warm air at the back of your neck when you go top down on a chilly day. When you design a removable top, you have to add back strength to the body that was lost when the roof was taken away. Audi claims that the S5 Cabriolet is 40 percent

more rigid than last year’s model. That means the driver doesn’t have to give up the sure-footed handling of the hardtop to enjoy ragtop refreshment. The Audi S5 Sportback and Cabriolet are sweet rides and welcome additions to the Audi stable.

COUNTERCLOCKWISE: THE S5 SPORTBACK CAN FIT UP TO FOUR PASSENGERS AND IS OUTFITTED WITH PREMIUM LEATHER SEATS; CENTER CONSOLE AND EXPANSIVE WING-DESIGN DASHBOARD; THE EXTERIOR BOASTS A SLEEK DESIGN WITH A FOLDING ROOF, 19-INCH WHEELS AND LED LIGHTS.

ICELAND HAS BECOME ONE OF THE WORLD’S coolest travel destinations. There’s never a bad time to visit this Nordic island nation. Contrary to its name, Iceland has a relatively green landscape, albeit full of national parks, volcanoes, lava fields and hot springs. Unlike that of its frigid neighbor Greenland, Iceland’s climate is characterized by damp, cool summers and mild but windy winters. By far the most popular times to travel here are June through August, when there are 24 hours of Arctic sun. September through October is an alluring time too, when tourist traffic has died down. From the Blue Lagoon and Viking history in Reykjavik to the national parks in Skaftafell, here are your must-visits. HALLGRIMSKIRKJA IS REYKJAVIK’S MAIN CHURCH WITH A NATIONALIST ARCHITECTURE DESIGN.

Reykjavik Iceland’s capital is its largest city and by far the most frequently visited. With a population of 123,000, this is one of the greenest, cleanest and safest cities in the world. Although it’s relatively small, Reykjavik’s culture and eventful celebrations attract people from across the world. STAY When it comes to accommodations, Airbnb is easily the most favored option for travelers, though the city also is home to incredibly luxe hotels. If a hotel experience better suits you, the 101 Hotel aims to impress. This art-focused, 38-room establishment offers a modern stay. Contemporary furnishings and a collection of local artwork are regularly on display. After spending the day touring the city, guests can relax with a basement gym, spa with steam bath, plunge pool and hot tub. In-room spa treatments are available as well. The Reykjavik Marina Residence offers seven plush suites inside two historic refurbished houses. The modern rooms, each named after an Icelandic ship, feature antique and contemporary furnishings complemented by an old-century style. salmon maki and salt cod. If you’re in a rush, the à la carte menu is nothing short of amazing. A local staple, Vid Tjörnina is an old and charming restaurant specializing in, you guessed it, seafood. Opened in 1986, it’s still owned by the family who founded it. Classic Icelandic recipes are served, so if you’re up for the challenge, you can indulge in fermented shark meat, Icelandic lamb fillet or skyr. There’s rarely an empty seat, as this is one of the city’s most frequented dining spots.

toiletries. This stay is for those who appreciate history as much as design. The Alda Hotel, which opened in 2014, is located on the main shopping street, Laugavegur. Upscale yet modestly priced, this is a hub for locals who gather for drinks in the Barber Bar in the lobby. The minimalist space features a simple design, with a color scheme of white, gray and the occasional pop of red. Because it’s located in the center of the city, there’s much to do within walking distance of the hotel. EAT Although Iceland has become increasingly popular with U.S. travelers, don’t expect the restaurants to be fully Americanized. Mostly on the menu is seafood, including whale and shark dishes, as

well as savory sides washed down with potent shots of hooch. On the pricey side, DILL Restaurant’s Northern European fare delights the senses. Located in Nordic House, one of Reykjavik’s premier cultural venues, here guests can experience Chef Gunnar Karl Gislason’s creative dishes. Classic Nordic ingredients with a twist, such as meatballs and plokkfiskur (a hearty fish stew), are staples, but the menu changes weekly with three, five and seven courses available. If you want the best Icelandic fish, look no further than Fiskmarkaðurinn, or Fish Market, which stays true to Icelandic culinary staples such as seafood, lamb and local dairy, but served with an Asian twist. There’s a nine-course tasting menu available, featuring dishes like scallop sashimi,

DO Reykjavik is home to the famous Blue Lagoon geothermal spa which has taken social media by storm. Located in a lava field in Grindavík on the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwestern Iceland, the silicaand sulfur-heavy water boasts skin benefits and is ideal for enjoying picturesque scenery. One of the city’s most impressive structures is Hallgrimskirkja, a church situated at the city’s highest point. Built between 1941 and 1986, this is the city’s stab at nationalist architecture. The can’t-miss destination is important, as it is one of Iceland’s more modern designfocused structures. While touring cultural landmarks, don’t forget to stop in the Viking Maritime Museum to learn about Iceland’s rich history. Reykjavik’s Golden Circle provides glimpses of the natural landscape,

including erupting geysers, sheer glacial cliffs, cascading waterfalls and extinct volcanoes. Travelers will love the culturally rich art and music scene of Reykjavik. Over the years, the city has garnered international recognition as a creative hub for visual artists. Gallerí Fold has earned its reputation since 1990 as Iceland’s leading exhibition and auction house. Art enthusiasts can enjoy works from Iceland’s most talented artists, such as Harry Bilson, whose work was chosen to represent Art Copenhagen in 2013. Kling & Bang is another gallery known for highlighting emerging and established artists with thought-provoking pieces in a variety of media. Started by 10 artists of different backgrounds, the mission of the space is “to introduce emerging and established, national and international artists and their works, that challenge the context and content of creative thinking.” Other galleries recommended for art aficionados include i8 Gallery, Gallerí Bakarí, ASÍ Art Museum and Reykjavik Art Museum.

Vatnajökull National Park. Spanning more than 12,000 kilometers, this is home to some of Iceland’s most exquisite landscapes. Skaftafell National Park welcomes travelers of all hiking levels to the expansive terrain, glaciers and volcanoes. The preservation area has geography similar to that of the Alps and has been naturally scarred by both fire and water (volcanoes and glaciers). Campsites are available throughout the national park.

Vik iMirdal This remote seafront village in southernmost Iceland is a far cry from bustling Reykjavik. Located 110 miles south of the capital city, the modest town sits in the shadow of the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, which lies directly atop the Katla volcano. Vík í Mýrdal has a little more than 300 residents, but it’s a picturesque stop as you travel across the country.

Visitors will love the black basalt sand beaches, one of the wettest places in Iceland, and their most popular inhabitant, the puffin. Vík í Mýrdal is the country’s warmest place with an average annual temperature of 41.5 degrees Fahrenheit. Despite short, cool summers and cold (but not severe) winters, it has the heaviest rainfall in the country. Besides the breathtaking views, enjoy the city’s football club, historic church and wool factory, open to tours.

Husavik As the largest town in northeast Iceland, Húsavík is a great destination for those seeking a cultural narrative of the country. This is the site of the first settlement in Iceland, when a viking visitor came for a winter and then left behind a man and two slaves who established a farm. The most important structure is the wooden

church, renowned as one of the country’s prime locations for whale watching. Be sure to visit the Húsavík Whale Museum and take in the city’s rich Viking history, just two more reasons why Iceland is a nature and history buff’s paradise. RACE TO MOTORSPORT UPDATES Drivers, get ready to gear up and start your engines! Thanks to the latest app, RACE Scout, finding an open spot on a racing team will soon become easier than going from 0 to 60. Developed by Mercedes-AMG in collaboration with innovators at Daimler’s Lab 1886, RACE Scout unofficially launched at this year’s Dubai 24-hour race. How does it work? Drivers sign up to create a profile through the app. Once a profile is registered, users can search various race events, tracks and cars from GT3 and GT4 races to see if there is an open spot (racing teams will also have the capability to view drivers’ profiles). RACE Scout has an in-app messaging system that connects users instantly. “In the process, bringing teams and race drivers together is only

THE G-CLASS IS “STRONGER THAN TIME” At this year’s Northern American International Auto Show (NAIAS), luxury marques were not the only astounding exhibits. To celebrate its latest launch, Mercedes-Benz installed the “world’s biggest installation of synthetic resin” featuring the 280 GE, released in 1979, on display inside. The

“Stronger Than Time” display weighs in at 44.4 tons and took some 90 days to complete. “The amber cube puts the uniqueness of the G-Class in a nutshell,” explains Dr. Gunnar Güthenke, head of the off-road vehicle product unit at MercedesBenz. “Our cult off-road vehicle has been continuously evolving for nearly 40 years without losing its character of core values. Its DNA is stronger than time and any trend fashion. The cube expresses this to

stunning effect and thus embodies the objective for advancing the G-Class.” The all-new G-Class transforms the beloved vehicle into a contemporary spectacle while retaining aspects customers love. The NAIAS won’t be the only opportunity for customers to view the “Stronger Than Time” display. According to Mercedes-Benz, the exhibit will be appear in other markets where the G-Class is launching.

AUDI TAKES HOME THE GOLD The 2018 Audi A4 has been riding in the spotlight ever since being named Luxury Car of the Year by Cars.com. It’s no surprise that the premier automobile has taken home this top spot, as it’s been creating chatter in the industry from the time it landed on the market. Vehicles awarded this honor are assessed in three major categories:

quality, innovation and value. The Audi A4 excels in all of these. “The versatility and competency of the A4 are unshakable, and combined with unwavering interior material quality, the A4 remains an outstanding luxury car,” according to Cars.com. Outfitted with a 252-hp engine and a capability of

0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds, the Audi A4 is powerful, to say the least. Mixing superior performance capabilities with technologies such as all-wheel drive, trafficsign recognition, top-view camera angles and active lane assist (to name just a few), the Audi A4 aims to be nothing less than the ultimate driving experience.

must have 25 reviews and average a minimum four-star rating. Benzel-Busch offers premier services, including a VIP drive-up valet service, a coffee bar for guests to enjoy beverages as they browse, a tech-based lounge area and, most importantly, a dedicated staff who wants their customers to have the very best driving experience. “This year’s Dealer of the Year Award winners stood out because of their dedication to providing superior customer service,” says Jamie Oldershaw, general manager of DealerRater. “Today, deals are won and lost on experience, and it’s clear from their online reviews that these dealerships understand how to take care of their customers.” To experience the high-level service BenzelBusch offers, visit their flagship location at 28 Grand Avenue, Englewood, NJ 07631 or call (201) 720-6411.

BENZEL-BUSCH CONNECTS PASSENGERS TO NEW TECH-SAVVY APP Benzel-Busch continues to stand at the forefront of the auto industry with the recent launch of its Parametric Messenger Badge. Developed in conjunction with Single Throw Marketing, a digital agency in Wall Township, NJ, this savvy technology connects drivers to the dealership using the Facebook messenger app and the all-new Parametric Messenger Badge affixed to the back of any Benzel-Busch vehicle. Once in the Facebook messenger app, all customers have to do is hover their smartphones over the badge and they will be instantly connected to the service team, where they can chat, text or leave a message. “The new Parametric Messenger Badge greatly benefits current and next-generation motorists by providing unequaled convenience of direct communication and furthers our mission to provide the absolute best customer service possible,” says Benzel-Busch President J. Agresta. “If there is a way we can stay better connected and provide better service to today’s and tomorrow’s customers, we’re going to do it.” This revolutionary application is one-of-a-kind and will help

streamline the process of connecting customers to the service department as needed. The new badge, which Benzel-Busch will be switching out for customers, has the same circular design as the original badge’s. “We invite everyone, whether you are an existing or future customer, to engage with us using

this exciting new technology provided by Single Throw Marketing,” says Agresta. “We look forward to this being one of the many innovations Benzel-Busch brings to the market with Single Throw Marketing in our continuing efforts to elevate the expectations of our customers and the car-buying public.”

SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE

THE FUTURE IS NOW

THE LAUNCH OF FLIPAUTO, BENZEL-BUSCH’S PROPRIETARY SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE, REVOLUTIONIZES THE CAR OWNERSHIP EXPERIENCE.

B

enzel-Busch is renowned for unmatched customer service. With its latest program launch, the dealership sets the bar even higher. Its new luxury subscription service, FlipAuto, transforms car leasing into something altogether new. This program is the future, and Benzel-Busch has helped pave the way for it. FlipAuto, the white-glove concierge automobile service, allows members to lease a car without being locked into a long-term contract. Not only are customers able to select a Benzel-Busch vehicle to drive on a monthly basis, but FlipAuto also grants them the opportunity to “flip” to another vehicle in the fleet. If you want to drive a convertible to the beach or a larger vehicle to go skiing in the mountains with friends, you can do so without any additional costs. “If you lease a car, you’re stuck in the lease for 36 months or whatever the terms of the lease are,” says

Benzel-Busch President J. Agresta. “There’s really not much you can do about it if you want to try to get out early. You’d have to pay your way out and that could be expensive. With this subscription, you’re just paying for 30 days at a time. There’s no further commitment, and there’s no penalty for dropping out.” Members will have access to the entire fleet of BenzelBusch luxury autos, everything from SUV’s and sedans to convertibles and mini-vans within each selected tier. The service’s flat rate not only includes access to the fleet, but also covers mileage, maintenance and insurance. Best of all is the program’s high-class service. When you flip your car, instead of having to go to the dealership, the new vehicle will be delivered directly to your home — clean, fueled and ready to go, all through your phone. “We’re bringing everything over to you whether you’re at home, at the office or wherever else you may

be, and switching everything over for you from one car to the other,” says Agresta. “We’re trying to provide concierge-type service with this subscription program.” FlipAuto is operated by a tech-savvy app that allows clients to delegate vehicle preferences, view the fleet inventory, select vehicles to flip to, and schedule pickup or deliveries. Currently, only a handful of dealerships are offering this service, but Agresta enthuses it will likely expand beyond the metropolitan area. In the future, he hopes to partner with other dealerships nationwide offering FlipAuto so clientele can always be connected to Benzel-Busch’s high-quality service anywhere in the U.S. “In essence, anytime you go on vacation — like if you fly to Los Angeles for the week — you wouldn’t have to suspend your subscription program here in New York,” says Agresta. “The dealer that’s responsible for the fleet in California would just bring you a car out

there. Instead of having to rent a car, you’d have access to a car anytime you need it, and that would be built into the all-in price.” FlipAuto will launch at Benzel-Busch this April. Customers interested in signing up can contact the dealership directly at (201) 720-6411 or visit 28 Grand Avenue, Englewood, NJ.

JOHNNY MAC SOLDIERS FUND

A

fter Colonel John “Johnny Mac” McHugh — a 24-year career Army aviator — was killed in action on a routine training mission in Kabul, Afghanistan, his West Point classmates united to ensure his spirit lived on. Education was always of the utmost importance to Colonel McHugh. He was married with five kids and wanted them to have the opportunity to receive a higher education. Friends of McHugh raised money to allow his kids to pursue this dream. In 2014, the Johnny Mac Soldiers Fund was established, with the stated mission of granting scholarships to military family members and veterans. Since then, the organization has donated more than $7.5 million and helped more than a thousand recipients pave the path to their futures. Highways spoke with MaryEllen Picciuto, a U.S. Army veteran and current president of the Johnny Mac Soldiers Fund, about how the organization has affected the lives of so many and plans to continue to do so well into the future. Tell our readers about the Johnny Mac Soldiers Fund and how it’s keeping the legacy of Colonel John M. McHugh alive. It began as a small effort to help one fallen classmate’s family; it quickly transformed into a mission to help as many military families as possible. Johnny Mac Soldiers Fund was created in 2014 to give back to those who gave, especially those who gave their all, like Johnny Mac. He was our West Point classmate and friend. Now, he is symbolic of all who have served and sacrificed.

How does partnering with other nonprofit organizations, like TAPS, help propel Johnny Mac Soldiers Fund to new levels? Johnny Mac Soldiers Fund gets money for all of its scholarships through nonprofit partner organizations that align with our mission and values. We have a thorough vetting process to evaluate other organizations’ leaders, fiscal responsibility and transparency, as well as their record of results. By relying on partners to administer our individual scholarships, we keep our overhead very low and our focus on raising more funds. We’ve found this is a very efficient way to accomplish our mission and quickly deliver meaningful support to those who need it now.

Mercedes-Benz is one of the organization’s national sponsors. How have they supported the Johnny Mac Soldiers Fund? Mercedes-Benz began its national sponsorship of Johnny Mac Soldiers Fund in 2016 with a promise to make a donation to the fund for every Mercedes-Benz vehicle sold in the U.S. In 2017, Mercedes delivered on that promise with $2.8 million in funding for eligible military children. In an extra show of support, Mercedes-Benz donated 100 computers to military children of the fallen for their 2017-18 school year. Countless dealerships have rallied to support military families through the Johnny Mac Soldiers Fund as well. With Benzel-Busch now in the area, are there any upcoming events or collaborations planned? Each year, we hold the Johnny Mac Memorial Golf Tournament at the West Point Golf Course. This is very close to Mercedes-Benz of Orange County. We’re also

very excited to participate in the grand opening of this new dealership. Give our readers an insider’s look into this year’s golf tournament at West Point. Our fifth annual Johnny Mac Memorial Golf Tournament is coming up on Monday, June 4. We expect to sell out with 32 foursomes at the beautiful course at historic West Point. Of all our events, this tournament is especially meaningful since most of our board members met Johnny Mac when they were West Point cadets. It gives us the opportunity to reflect on the memory of Johnny Mac and celebrate his legacy. You can register on our website, www.johnnymac.org. What’s next on the list for the Johnny Mac Soldiers Fund? This year, we’ve added two new events to our calendar. The Johnny Mac Golf Classic II takes place at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida on September 7, and our inaugural Beverly Hills Gala will be held on November 8. Jimmy Kimmel will serve as our gala host. We are very excited about that!

What else would you like our readers to know about the organization? There are so many veteran service organizations out there, yet very few have achieved the results of Johnny Mac Soldiers Fund in such a short span of time. I credit our caring supporters, compelling mission and, indeed, our inspiration, Johnny Mac. As Johnny Mac’s West Point classmates, we will continue to answer the call to serve.
