PACKAGING DESiGN
MESSAGE PRESiDENT FROM THE
Here we have the work of over 500 graduating Art and Design students—every one of them a marvel! Imagine the challenges they faced this year. Forced by the pandemic to work from their homes, denied the in-studio, shoulder-to-shoulder, hands-on learning experience they expected, they nevertheless forged ahead, defying all obstacles. They created makeshift work stations in their bedrooms, basements, kitchen corners and other unlikely locations. Focused, hardworking and energetic, they applied their ingenuity to learn, explore, experiment and achieve. And as we see from this catalogue, they succeeded. The work in this catalogue represents 16 of the School of Art and Design’s programs. In it we not only see the students’ finished products, but also images of how those projects evolved. These images help to reveal the creative process and the students’ individuality. Through it all, we sense their resilience and determination. Indeed, this vibrant catalogue— with its bright bold colors—pays homage to their optimism and extraordinary strength. I offer congratulations to these students and to the families and friends who supported them throughout this difficult year. Congratulations as well to the stalwart Art and Design faculty whose own skills and ingenuity rose to the pandemic’s challenge and provided guidance to their students with diligence and care. CONSUMER BRANDS

Designing for consumer brands is strategic. Communicating a compelling narrative, brand voice and product benefit against the backdrop of a competitive and complex marketplace, is both challenging and rewarding. The consumer landscape moves forward in a continuous state of flux, innovation, e-commerce, social globalism, brand loyalty, pervasive digitization, and the circular economy, all of which play a critical role in the path to purchase. New business models including customization, subscription, and direct to consumer delivery, provide for a wealth of brand and packaging design opportunities. The Packaging Design BFA celebrates its 40th year and remains the only BFA of its kind in the United States. Our graduates play a commanding role in the ecosystem of consumer brand companies around the globe.

As someone who has benefitted from the solidarity of several different communities, I understand how vital a role they can play in people’s lives. With a human-centered approach, I believe design can work symbiotically with diverse social groups and successfully fulfill its main purpose — providing easily digestible solutions to people’s problems, regardless of scale. Ultimately, the end goal for me is to serve as a bridge that allows design to support and enrich people’s lives for the better.

I grew up in Venezuela and came to study design in New York City. Making the move has helped me learn to be independent, open-minded, and active in a diverse environment. This has enabled me to grow as a creative person, but I am still deeply affected by what is happening in my country. Venezuela has two sides: chaotic and quiet. I have experienced both – the dictatorship and corruption of the government, and the calm, natural beauty of the mountains and seaside. My design aesthetic comes from two sides as well – my shy personality, and my dismay about the situation in my country. My design reflects this – simple, minimalistic, yet unorthodox, and marketable.

I’ve always had a passion for art and design. I spent most of my childhood taking art classes, falling in love with all things creative. My passion for packaging design was ignited while browsing the shelves, as I would often go into stores without buying anything. Just looking at packages, I found the ones that drew me in. Before I thought of this as a viable career, I grew to know what I liked when it came to design, and what I wanted to do to add to the market in the future. I believe good design can bring people together, it can be bold, and it can educate – things that I try to incorporate into my work.
