about me My name is Rui Jorge Vieira Pinto, I’m 49 years old, married, with two daughters -(Elisabete with 21 and Joana with 15 years old). I’m from Portugal and I Iive in Setúbal city, situated around 50 Km south of Lisbon, Portugal’s capital. I work as a CFO (Chief Financial Officer) for an international group of Chemical Companies. This basically means that almost every week, from Monday to Friday I am fully occupied. In that way, photography has always been a continuous project to be experienced and enjoyed during the sparingly free time as it is becoming available. I can say, I’m a landscape photographer so mainly my choices goes towards the nature photography although urban area photography also appeals strongly to me, and as a landscape photographer, the type of photos that I like the most are the Long Exposure photos, with the use of Neutral Density filters. In spite of realizing that photography may not become more than just an hobby for me, the love and attachment I have towards it, makes me feel very special and powerful. When I’m photographing, it’s when I’m feeling realized and my mind relaxes from the daily stress and problems, so it helps to recover my strength. Even if it means by this to wake up at 2h00 am to photograph a Sunrise at a place 200 Kms from home. This is how I see and feel Landscape photography. 3

As most of the people, I love to travel. Besides Portugal (including the Azores and Madeira islands) I have visited other countries. Spain is very close to Portugal and I really like the north coast from Galiza region to the Bask country, as well as Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla and Valencia cities. I have been also in Iceland (twice) and due to the magnificent landscapes of this country, for sure will be a third and fourth visit. The Asia continent is on my list to visit, but I need to wait for better days when this pandemic situation ends. I currently use the Canon 5D Mark IV with the lens Canon 16-35m f4, 24-105mm f3.5 and Canon 70-200mm f2.8. I also work with Lee filters, the ND10; ND6; ND Grad soft 0.9, 0.6 and 0.3, and when necessary (especially when you have water), a Zeiss Polarizor. But every photo has its own story, sometimes we can see danger, romance or just hard work. Furthermore, in my opinion, the most important thing on landscape photography, is that every photo must communicate with the person who will see it. If the photo doesn’t communicate, it’s just a regular standard picture. All of my photos have 90% of the work on camera. The remaining 10% are made in post processing. And of course, if you shoot in raw and you do long exposures, the post processing is an important part of the photo. My workflow is mostly based on the Adobe Lightroom. I import the photos and make the necessary adjustments. Although, for specific situations (cleaning points, specific levels points, specific saturation points), I bring the photo to Adobe Photoshop and then again to Lightroom to finalize the photo. 4

Defence Tower: This is at the cape “Carvoeiro”, close to Peniche city. A place were the weather conditions are normally intense. The Rock formation in the middle on the sea is called “Nau dos Corvos” and it gives us the impression of an advanced line of defense against who came by the sea. 5

Magic Light: This is at “Torreira” village, a place very well known for the small boats tied on the river banks, it’s close to Aveiro city on the center north region of Portugal. The sky was full of clouds, the Sunrise was 15 min earlier, but the light didn’t appear. Then suddenly and for 5 min, the sky opened and the light came, between the clouds, bringing to us this moment. 6

Ocean Coast: This is at the “Abano” beach, Portuguese oceanic Coast on the North of Lisbon, close to Cascais city. The sensation of depth is quite present on this photo, due to the effect of the long exposure on the clouds, running to the horizon line. 7

Skogafoss: The iconic waterfall of Skogafoss in Iceland. A majestic waterfall with 60m of height and 25m width. You can walk almost at the end and when you get there, the sensation of the power of nature is extremely intense.

The Boat: This is in the industrial area of Setúbal city. An old boat used in the past to transport people from Setúbal city to Troia peninsula through the Sado River, that was left abandoned. The use of the Long Exposure on the sky gives us the sensation of an old boat that was reborn from the sea. 9

The Chapel A small church located on the top of the rocks, on a beach close to the sea. It calls “Senhor da Pedra”, close to Porto city on the north of Portugal. This photo was taken after the Sunset and with the last lights of the day. With the long exposure was possible to bring the remaining yellows and oranges, that mixed with clouds movement and the reflex on water gave a special highlight to the chapel. 10

The Guggenheim This is the Guggenheim Museum at Bilbao city in Spain. The architecture of this building is unique and a bless for a landscape photographer. The long exposure gives us the sensation that the museum is almost floating between the water and the sky.

The mountain The iconic mountain of Kirkjufell in Iceland. This photo was shooted after the Sunrise with a nice light. The ice, the clouds, the water, the rocks, the mountains, are the perfect elements for landscape photography. 12

The Tower This is the “Belém” tower located in Lisbon. It is one of the most famous monuments in Portugal, it was built in the 16th century on the period of discoveries. The movement of the clouds on the direction of the tower, give us the idea that the tower is moving, floating on the Tejo river. © Rui Jorge Vieira Pinto
