Hues & Pixels Photography Vol. 02 . Issue 02

Foreword We have all been through a tough and challenging 2020. Photographically too, with lock downs and travel restrictions most of us were not able to shoot much. On a positive note, it was a great time to review our work, dig out some lost treasures from our past shoots/travels, learn new skills and enhance our knowledge. We are happy to see all our members contributing and participating in HP with all their beautiful photos and would like to thank each one of you. All the wonderful images from around the globe kept us inspired through the year. Hues and Pixels Photography Group was started with the objective of sharing a common love for Photography. From the beginning, we welcomed professional and hobbyist members bound by the same passion. The group has grown a lot in past few years. From a handful of photographer friends, it is now a forum which includes some of the amazing works from all over the world. Huge number of members was not our priority; we always look forward to photographers with a deep interest in this art. Personally I have learnt a lot and grown as an artist and I am happy to be part of the photographic journey of all our members. Being photo artists ourselves, we strive to bring together photographers to share the art of our photography. Through the work and images shared on our platform, we hope to view frames and moments from different genres of photography. We believe that as artists from the same community, we need to inspire, promote and encourage each other. Heartiest Congratulations to all the Featured artists on behalf of Team HP. Regards

Antoni Figueras

4

My name is Antoni Figueras and I am an amateur photographer from Barcelona. My interest in photography began at the end of the 70s, when I was a student, linked to my passion for traveling, trying to capture in images the impression that those places I was visiting produced on me. I mainly practice landscape, urban and architectural photography. I like slow and tripod photography, sunrises, sunsets and blue hour, when the warm tones of the artificial lights contrast with the blue skies, looking for the reflections of the lights in the water and the softness of the long exposures.

Cityscapes and Architecture

My current camera is a Sony A7R-III and as lenses I mainly use a Sony 24-105 f4 and a Sony 16-35 f4. I recently purchased a Sony 12-24 f4 and also own a Sony 100-400 and two Laowas 12 and 15mm. As filters, I mainly use a polarizer and ND filters of 10, 6 and 3 steps and occasionally a 2 or 3 step graduated, depending on the light conditions. I think that every image must start from adequate planning, try to obtain the best possible capture and finally be developed with a processing that enhances it, but without it being excessive or stand out the image in itself. Some time ago, I read a comment from someone who said that every time he looked at the photographs of a certain person it was as if a window opened on his computer screen to the places he had been. It is a definition that impressed me and the one that I would like to pursue with my work. 5

San Marco

Sony A7R-II, Laowa 12, ISO 100, panorama from 5 HDR photographs Venice is one of the most exciting cities for any photographer. I have visited it 6 times over the years and each time it continues to amaze me even more if possible. Discovering places that are always crowded at dawn, in calm and loneliness, is an experience that enhances the pleasure of photographing them.

Infinite Windows

Š Antoni Figueras

Sony A7R-II, Laowa 12, ISO 100, HDR of 8 images from 1/4 to 30s. Hong Kong is another one of those cities that I am passionate about, for its incredible contrasts. This inner courtyard in Quarry Bay is famous for its appearance in various films. The drama produced by the 12mm of the ultra-wide Laowa and the HDR blending of photographs of different exposure times to achieve detail in lights and shadows, I think give strength to the photograph.

Mont Saint Michel

Š Antoni Figueras

Sony A7R-III, Sony 24-105 at 105mm, ISO 100, f9, 5s. Focus stacking of 3 frames Mont Saint Michel is one of the landmarks of photography in France. This meander, only full of water out of the summer, adds a point of interest to the image, so we did not hesitate to find its location. The blue hour with the lights of the abbey turning on, complete the photograph we planned.

Sony A7R-III, Sony 24-105 at 46mm, ISO 100, f13, HDR of 5 images from 0.8 to 13 seconds. This church is located in the Barro estuary, on the incredible Asturian coast of northern Spain. Long exposures in the blue hour, with reflections in the water and warm lights that contrast with cold shadows is a kind of photography that passionate me.

Escola Massana

© Antoni Figueras

Sony A7R-III, Sony 16-35 at 20mm, ISO 100, f 6.3, panorama of 2 HDR photographs. The Escuela Massana building is located in the renovated Gardunya square, behind the famous Boqueria market on the Ramblas in Barcelona. Fine-art architecture photography in black and white has always appealed to me and it is a technique that I would like to try to learn.

Hues & Pixels Photography Vol. 02 . Issue 02 Citizen Square Sony A7R-II, Sony 24-70 at 24mm, ISO 100, F11, 1/200s. The city of Shenzhen, next to Hong Kong, has some places that surprise with their ultra-modern appearance. This photograph is the result of an attempt at developing in black and white type fine-art, which could not convince me and which at the end resulted in this hybrid in colour, unusual for me, but which I think helps to enhance the futuristic aspect of the place.

Mesmerising Landscapes by Fina Leon Quesada

Fina Leรณn Quesada

12

My name is Fina Leรณn Quesada, I am passionate about landscape photography both day and night, which fits perfectly with my other two hobbies, traveling and nature. My interest in photography started around 2013, I used to accompany my husband and so, little by little,it sank deep into me. I started without any notion. It is not easy, you have to be very constant and dedicate many hours to it, Since then I have not stopped training by attending workshops, photographic trips and everything that is related to it, to improve both the technique and the editing, and incidentally, live beautiful experiences and meeting wonderful people. I try to convey with my photography what I see and feel at that moment. The movement of the Clouds and the calm of the water seem like a good combination for landscape photography.

Vol. 02 . Issue 02

Hues & Pixels Photography

It’s for that This is why I work on daytime landscape photographs with neutral density filters. In addition to the filters I also carry in my backpack a Nikon D810, a Nikon 14/24 lens and 24/70. It is not a light team but it is my team and I feel very comfortable working with it. I am one of those who think that almost everything in photography is invented, the only thing that can be innovative is given by the nuance of your own look, so I try to do personal work, both in the moment of capture as in editing. I do the processing with camera Raw and Photoshop, in camera Raw I make the basic adjustments, balance white, focus, sharpness and adjust the tones to my liking. In photoshop I make tonal adjustments by zones by means of luminosity masks with the Tony Kuyper panel. I use selective layers of color to touch up each color channel to my liking, I use Nik collection filters to give contrast to the photo and finally I finish with selective focus of some parts of the photo that I am interested in highlighting. 13

Creative Portraits by Kenneth Kisbye

Kenneth Kisbye

18

Kenneth Kisbye is an Danish fashion and portrait photographer. My parents were both working photographers when I was born so I’ve had a camera most of my 59 years life All my childhood we took b&w pictures and developed film in our house. When I was 18 and ready to start a professional careea I was really tired of doing standard portraits, so I changed everything around and got a chance to get into enviromental engineering and have worked in Researce and Development. At the end I got sick and had to stop working in engineering so I stopped and startet my own photography buisness in 2007 - Foto-4you.dk. Worked as profesional model photographer for some years untill sickness forced me to retire. Now I photograph for free and for my own entertaintment - it seems that the work with pictures and the models is what make my world go around. I mainly work from my studio, attached to my home. At the moment I use the Canon EOS 6d Mk2 with 3 lenses and typical with a 3 light setup. One 60x60 cm softbox in front and two backlights with 7” standard reflectors i normally shoot around f=6.3, 1/125s and iso 200 in the studio. I always shoot raw format and then develop the pictures in lightroom. Then the selected pictures get retouched in photoshop, before returning to lightroom where I make the conversion to .jpeg pictures for display on the internet. My lenses are canon L series, 24 - 105 mm for full lenghts, 70 - 200 mm for 2/3 lenght and finaly my 85 mm for very sharp and clear close up portraits.

Magical Woodlands and Nature by Antonio Goni Aramendia

Antonio Goñi

24

My name is Antonio Goñi and I’m from Navarre, North of Spain. I am passionate about photography, mostly natural landscapes photography. My favourite topic is the forest, even though I’m attracted by any natural related theme. My job is filming and editing nature reports for TV. I started to sink in the world of image when I was very young, but not too long later I abandoned photography to dedicate exclusively to video filming. Five years ago, I retook photo shooting until nowadays, when has became my became my main activity. Even though I studied photography and video filming in the 90s. I’ve had to update my knowledge to digital photo. When it comes to my style of photography, I try to convey what I feel before the scene that is in front of me.

Vol. 02 . Issue 02

Hues & Pixels Photography Featured Photographer

I like a lot wet forests, that look like they came from fairy tales, and I try to convey them like that. I always carry with me two camera bodies that are a Nikon D850 and another D810. When it comes to lens, I like the prime lenses, but in the landscape that i use to photography is more comfortable to use zoom lens. At the moment I use a 16-35mm f4, 24-70mm f2.8 and 70-200mm f2.8. Then, when it comes to prime lenses, I use 11mm f4, 15mm f2.4, 20mm f1.8 and 50mm f1.4. Even when the trajectory is very long, I use the zoom lenses. I like to process my pics with Lightroom, Photoshop and Luminar. I think that in landscape photography, it’s essential to use luminosity mask. In reality, what I like to do is to play with the light and the colour. © Antonio Goñi 25

Stunning Landscapes from India by Nilakkya Dutta

A flower Seller Rowing over Dal Lake, Kashmir in winters I was taking a Shikara ride over the waters of Dal Lake in the February month of 2017 where I spotted this man with a caption of ‘Mr. Wonderful Flower Man’ selling flowers. The backdrop snow capped mountains along with the pristine waters of the lake gave me an ideal set up for capturing him in my camera. The colors of the flowers added the required contrast to the frame. 30

Stakna Monastery during the winters of LadakhIt was an offbeat route I was following during my winter Ladakh trip coming from Chumathang to Leh. In between spotted the two monasteries called Thicksey and Stakna. The Stakna view with the backdrop of the tall snow laden mountain and the cold desert around gave me an ideal frame to capture. Another interesting feature were the yellow leaves of the trees which is one of the striking features of Ladakh landscape if one is traveling from Autumn to spring.

Vasudhara Falls above Mana Village in Badrinath Valley of Garhwal division, Uttarakhand state. It is said that if the waters of this waterfall sprinkle upon you when you stand at a distance below it, then you are a true soul. With this myth in mind and with an intent to capture its beauty, I made this small trek to the fall and captured some frames. 32

Ludwig Riml

34

My name is Ludwig Riml. I was born in Tyrol, in the middle of the Alps. When I was 24 I moved to Sweden, where I have been living since then. As for all of us, our childhood and adolescence has a big influence on what we are drawn to as adults. Hiking on a mountain path makes me automatically feel at home and results in a deep recognition of who I am. Besides nature, my intense desire for stillness, contemplation and peaceful living strongly influences my approach to Photography, through which I try to convey my impressions of the world around me and my experiences of it. Most of the time I like to photograph landscapes during the different seasons: mountains, seascapes, waterfalls, forests and trees. I am very slow in my approach to take a shot; keen to get it as perfect as possible in camera, almost pedantic. I nearly always use a tripod and very often filters like polarizers, GND and ND filters. Of course that is not always ideal and I have missed quite some shots when fast action would have been needed.

Beauty of Light in Landscapes by Ludwig Riml

My favorite lens is the 16-35mm zoom but I use all focal lengths from 12-200mm. From time to time I have the urge to create something different. I like the delicate pastels of flowers and close up photography with a small depth of field and creamy bokeh, quite contrary to landscapes, where I often use the technique of focus stacking to get everything in the frame as sharp as possible. My absolute favorite lens for flower photography is the Lensbaby Velvet 85mm 1.8. I also like to travel and enjoy experiencing other cultures and manners. On these journeys I usually take a lot of environmental portraits. I always shoot in Raw and do my post processing work in Lightroom, Photoshop and third party filters like Nik software, Topaz and sometimes Luminar. I use Tony Kuipers TK panel for precise masking to make local adjustments in my work. Some of my favorite locations for landscape photography are the Alps, Lofoten Islands in Norway, The Swedish Islands Gotland and Ă–land, Dalecarlia and the West Coast of Sweden. I dream of going to Iceland, the Faroe Islands and Scotland in the near future. 35 ŠLudwig Riml

I’m Hirak Bhattacharjee.. I am doctorate in Applied Geology and currently I am working as GM operation for one of the biggest coal mining project in Indonesia.. Since 2018 I am into photography and to be very honest I start my photography only to see the universe in the darkest night.. Sony A7MarkII was my first camera and currently I am working with Sony A7RMarkIII and A7MarkIII.. Since my childhood, I love traveling and that is why I choose geology as my subject over physics during my graduation days.. For me photography is biggest passion and motivation I ever had in my life.. And in future I seriously love to pursue it as my career..

New Moon Night and Seascape

©Hirak Bhattacharjee

In South Sumatra Island of Indonesian, there is a place called “Gigi Hiu” and which in english translation means, Shark’s Teeth.. In July’19, when for the first time I visited this place, I wondered how appropriate is the nomenclature of this location! A rocky shoreline opening to Indian Ocean and opening toward the South West; almost a heaven for Milkyway shot.. So, I tried my luck and I especially focused on showing the shark’s teeth and mighty Milkyway juxtaposition to bring the real flavour of this place..

A Little Hut and Night Sky As I can’t travel anywhere during early phase of Covid19 pandemic and got stuck in South Borneo Island, so all I do is explore many parts of South Borneo during nights.. It was the new moon night of April’20, when I found this place and later that night I shot the Mighty Milkyway..

I loved the simplicity and perspective of comparison between Human’s existence in the real world to the Universe..

Since my early days of star gazing and browsing through astrophotography, I always used to get amazed by startrail photography and it is almost like first love to me in the photography genre.. Recently, once India started to move on Unlocking the country (even after Covid’19 situation), I got lucky to make a trip to Himalayan terrain again.. Sikkim, one of the most pristine state in India which offers undisturbed view of Mt kanchenjunga.. Here, while I was in Ravangla, I tried to portray the beautiful Kanchenjunga-Mt Pandim and Mt Kabru during the night..

Star Gazer

©Hirak Bhattacharjee

As I already have mentioned about my latest Himalayan trip; during the trip, I camped in a place called Sabargram (in Between Phalut and Sandakafu).. It was one of the pristine place I ever stayed in.. A class 1 night sky, all the himlayan high ranges and chilly dry night, what else can someone ask! It was our 2nd night there, finally we got what we are eagerly waiting for... ever since sunset, me and my friends jumped out of the tent to prepare and shoot Galaxy Milkyway.. I climbed up to a nearby hillock and where as my friend decided to work from the base of that hillock.. Here in this picture, I tried to describe how lucky we astrophotographers are, being a star gazer!!

Beautiful World Of Macro by Maria Luisa Milla Morena

Maria Luisa Milla Moreno

48

I am Maria Luisa Milla Moreno, born and based in Cordoba, Spain. Since a very young age, I have felt a close bond with nature and art. It wasn’t until 2012 that I understood that my camera could help me express the meaning of that bond. I like to photograph my dogs because of our shared moments of inner peace. During our long walks together in the forest, our natural instincts draw us to what makes us smile and breathe deeply. With the passing of time and thanks to those walks, I discovered the intimacy, beauty and visual art of the miniature world bursting with life under our feet. This type of photography has given me the most fascinating and dramatic closeups I have in my portfolio, and drastically changed my perception of insects.

Vol. 02 . Issue 02

Hues & Pixels Photography Featured Photographer

During my childhood, insects were my arch enemies -- a cause of unjustified terror. After the first images I captured of them, I developed a curiosity about each of their stories and began to understand that among their silence or buzzes was a desire to survive on this fierce planet. They lived absorbed in their mini world, indifferent to our presence, generously showing you their tiny surroundings as a big and interesting world, full of unlimited colors, textures and lights. I soon understood how beneficial they are to our planet and our own survival. I would like my images to convey a message of protection and conservation of nature in general. I hope that my images delight your eyes and mind and make you feel true love for nature and all its work.

Tale of a Winding Path Location: Dolomites, Italy Description: Mornings are magical... just that often we are too much in a hurry to notice the magic. Often mornings are spent in the rush to get ready, hurry to office and carry out well-trained routines. However, on days that we can take a break from such a monotony, do push yourself to drive off to see the sunrise, take a walk in nature or simply sip your coffee in the balcony. Even a regular country scene like this can transform into a well-composed tale of a winding path on a golden morning. EXIF: f8 | 1/30s | 300mm | ISO100 68

Common Kingfisher With Fish Kill Fairly common but small, often rather shy, and inconspicuous. Beautiful blue-and-orange plumage, Found along rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds—almost any fresh or brackish habitat with small fish. Often perches quietly in trees over water; most often seen in very fast low flight as a turquoise flash over the water, usually flying away. Easily detected once its high, shrill whistled call is learned, even if the bird itself is hidden.

These two photos are different shots of a magical setting, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. It is an islet in the Biscayan town of Bermeo, Basque Country, Spain. It is linked to the mainland by a bridge with two arches. On the island there is a hermitage dedicated to San Juan dating from the 10th century. The hermitage was built on the remains of a castle assigned to the Kingdom of Navarra. Together with another small neighboring island, that of Aqueche, it forms a protected biotope. The islet and its surroundings were the setting for the filming of several scenes from the seventh season of the Game of Thrones series, in which the beach becomes Dragonstone.

Any time of year is good to go there but autumn is my favorite, besides, with a little luck we can be lucky and have good lights in the sky. While the sun was setting and the Fawn Vultures were flying over us, I chose to take an extreme panoramic view of more than 180 degrees to be able to have a close-up and to be able to combine it with the sickle.

The Secret Cave Location: Virxe Do Porto, Galicia, Spain EXIF: Panorama with Iso 100, f16 and Bracketing +2 0 -2 On our recent trip through Galicia and Asturias, one of our first stops was the Virxe Do Porto. Since I met her in 2011, it has always been a place that I have fallen in love with and I have come back to onsome occasions, although until now I had not taken any photos that I really liked. This time Elena and I were there with the pleasant company of Jabi Sanz, Ramón Espelt and Julio Castro, fantastic photographers and people I admire. Exploring the area a little before sunset, looking for possible frames, I found a corner that I especially liked, but it was risky, since it could not leave anything. Finally I took a chance and bet on one single picture, if what I wanted came out, I would take something different from that beaten up place, otherwise I would waste a sunset in that fantastic place I would not return to on that trip. Finally there was luck and the desired frame came out.

Major worker ants are 8-10 mm in length, while the minor workers are half the length of majors. Luxury of a Billion The photograph was captured at Chondu in Singalila National Park, situated in West Bengal at India-Nepal border during out photo tour early November 2020. It’s the homestay, in the foreground, where we stayed. The kitchen is roofless and the light coming from it was solar lamp and fire in the kitchen. It looked so heavenly. All basic luxuries of City life is missing here, like no electricity, no internet, no running water, no cooking gas. But this place is enriched by nature with Mt. Everest at the North-West, Mt. Kanchanjungha at the North and surrounded by beautiful Himalayan Layers. And at Night it’s covered by billion stars of our Galaxy. Hence ‘The Luxury of a © Rajat Malakar Billion’ Knowledge is Power Location: Kolkata, India Description: The power of knowledge and wisdom gained from books is unparallel .In this portrait, I’ve tried to showcase that very essence in a vintage environment inspired by the famous Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer.

This beach is very well known for the bad weather conditions, which is common on the beaches on the north region, and it’s a lovely place to photograph at the Sunset. Hues & Pixels Photography Best of HP 2020

Nikon D7200 and tokina 11-16mm 11mm, f10,iso 100, 1/320 sec It was a pre planned shot.I wanted to shoot our national flag at a good location during sunset. So I went to this large waterland called ‘Bortir Bil’ and asked a boy to fly the flag while standing on a boat. The ambience complemented the whole picture to turn out as a satisfactory photograph.

Piercing the Veil of Mist Nikon D7200 and Sigma 17-50 mm 26 mm, f5.6, iso 200, 1/100 sec. While going out to shoot on a densely foggy morning we stopped at this location near my home at Prafullanagar. The trees lined up by the road was giving dimension to the frame, and heavy fog with little visibility had created real drama. Now a composition with a single subject in fog with a large tree might look dramati, but it’s a © Tamal Chowdhury cliche. So I waited for a backlit subject,to make it stand out.Nowadays, most of the cars/bikes use LED lights, so I’ve to wait for a halogen one to make a contrast of warmth and cool.
