WELCOME BILLY WOOD CHAIRMAN /
Welcome everyone to The Continental Pilot Field as we welcome Haringey Borough in Isthmian League action.
A big welcome to all their committee, staff, management, coaches, players and of course supporters for today’s game.
The last couple of league games have been literally fine margins, as a club we have to be reminded how far we have come and keep right behind the lads. We have shown so far this season we are more than capable of challenging near the top of the league and our quest to add more points on the board starts again today.
I was very happy and encouraged by Tuesday nights game. Many consider the Velocity Cup a distract ion but to see so many of our Academy
CEO
graduates get their senior debuts made me very proud. The future is certainly bright and we have to continue to support that.
This week marked one year since our appointment of Gary Elphick as Manager with Jon Meeney also joining us as First Team Coach. Alongside Andrew Brown and the rest of the staff we have had a year to remember and long may that continue. Gary’s honesty, integrity and care for the club cannot be matched by anyone and not only do I respect the job, but the man and really enjoy our working relationship.
Here’s to many more years of us working together.

GARY ELPHICK THE GAFFER
Welcome to today’s match against Haringey Borough.
They’ve been in fantastic form of late, and today will be a tough test for us. They have a real attacking threat, and we will have to be on our toes.
I’ve been delighted with our lads recent performances, we’ve been down to the bare bones at times, but our attitude and application makes me feel very proud to manage them. It’s small margins at the moment, but these little 1%’s will make us better in the long run.
Today’s match also brings up my first year as manager of Hastings. I’d like to thank my players and my support staff. They’ve been great, and also you fans. The away support at times has been breathtaking and it’s always an honour for me to perform in front of the Pilot Field faithful.
Onwards and upwards!
Gary

NEW MERCHANDISE NOW IN STOCK
GUT FEELING SIMON STODDART’S
My views - not United's - on semi-pro football and occasionally, other topics.
NORTH OF THE RIVER HOODOO
Well, seems like United have just such a curse hanging over them. Promotion saw the U's making their way to games via the Dartford Crossing once again and of the 6 defeats so far this season - all have been at the hands of sides from North of the River.
I've missed several games recently - those pesky 12 hour shifts go through phases of interfering and games having to be followed on line with Joe Knight's excellent videos going a long way to making up for those missed games.
I said in the Burgess Hill GF that United seemed intent on reproducing last season's initial run of poor results against other promotion contenders - and last weekend's reversal at Enfield completes a dodgy clean sweep! Put that emphatically right last time round - more of the same please!
Today we take on another side from North of that river - Haringey Borough are here. Quite possibly another first encounter.
WHO'D BE A MANAGER
I'm having to knock my column up with the harsh deadline imposed by Editor-in-Chief Hoggard and at this stage - Sunday evening, my break at work - not sure what transpired to see no Alex Brefo on duty at Enfield with Gary on the bench.
Ironical eh. Finn would presumably have started that game with Alex out - at a guess. But he has gone on loan to Cray Valley - and wasn't in their side away to Hythe Town last weekend as he was suspended after his red card the previous week.
Single goal margins of defeat - four of themBishop's Stortford and Potters Bar Town hereand Billericay and Enfield a week ago, two consecutive 0-1 results. It's all hugely frustrating and the Enfield result all the more so given the only goal came in the 87th minute just after a post kept Chinedu McKenzie's effort out.
Must be difficult for Gary. Finn is a great team man and again, educated guess, his suspension after that harsh red card at Hornchurch sees Alex slotting in nicely and life made difficult for Finn to get back in the starting line up. The word amongst U's supporters behind the opposing goal in the weeks leading up to the Cray Valley deal, certainly seemed to be that Finn wasn't going to want to be a regular on the bench (Of course he didn't). If only football was 12 a side.
ANOTHER EX 'U' ON THE MOVE
Having played a big part in Worthing's promotion to National South last season it was a surprise Dajon didn't stay there. He moved onto Cheshunt who aren't doing too well after following Worthing up via the play offs.
He's just up the A21 now having signed for Tonbridge Angels. Good player, Dajon. I recall his debut at Shoreham - very nearly 5 years ago to the day - November the 4th, 2017-18 season. United were going through a poor run at the time, that was early in the reign of Chris Agutter - and it was Dajon who got a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw. Good luck at Tonbridge, fella.
GREAT SHOT
Well it was - Alex Brefo obligingly responding to calls of 'Shoot!' in the Trophy defeat of Burgess Hill. This outstanding photo was on Twitter
recently - as good an action shot as you'll ever see ....... Photo taken by Chris Neal (@cn_things). Our own Scott White has a rival!
NUMBERS SAY IT ALL
148 through slow moving turnstiles on Tuesday night for a league cup tie with Corinthian Casuals. Games like that hover somewhere between training sessions and the bread and butter of league football. Our Sussex Senior Cup tie with Crawley will generate a bit more interest - might get 350 in for that . 3 points at stake week in and week out - that's what does it for most of us.
8 round 3 fixtures - only one gate over 300, that was Horsham vs Whitehawk that saw 333 spectators. Says it all eh?
CABIN CREW PREPARE FOR TAKE OFF
Philippines here I come. The land where a 3pm kick off for you is 11pm for me. And 7.45 evening kick off at the Pilot Field is 3.45 am for me. What's more I have followed an evening kick off from Angeles City - plenty of watering holes where several bottles of San Miguel and Football Web Pages keep me up to date. Whitehawk away - an FA Trophy replay several seasons ago. Davide Rodari got the winner and I staggered back into the hotel at 6 am .........
Catch y'all later! Gut Feeling will be compiled from afar till mid December.
Tumbleweed Trophy………

Vita Risk Solutions Manager of the Month
It’s Manager of the Month time again, courtesy of Vita risk Solutions.
Our Pitching In Isthmian Premier Manager of the Month award for October takes us on a trip along the M11, where we end up at Bishop’s Stortford, home of Blues boss Steve Smith. Steve’s side had a magnificent October, unbeaten not only in the Pitching In Isthmian League but in all competitions, as well as conceding only one goal along the way.
Many congratulations to Steve, and to all at the R&D Advisors UK Stadium.
AB1 Golden Gloves Award - October 2022
Golden Gloves Awards, sponsored by the fabulous folks at AB1 Goalkeeping. Once more we lead with the story of the Blues, visiting Bishop’s Stortford. The Blues are having a fine season, greatly helped by their parsimonious defence, and October saw them keep four clean sheets (five if we count cup competitions, which we don’t, but it still deserves a mention). Jack Giddens is their main man, so congrats go to Jack and all those who stand steadfastly in front of him.
Knory led a young side to a 2-1 Velocity Cup victory over Corinthian-Casuals.

HARINGEY BOROUGH
Club: Haringey Borough Football Club
Club Founded: 1907
Nickname: The Borough
HISTORY
It was not until 1970 that a team competed under the name of Haringey Borough when WOOD GREEN TOWN who had played at Coles Park since 1930 changed their name to Haringey Borough. A merger with EDMONTON FC resulted in a brief change of name to Edmonton & Haringey FC until 1976 when the present name was re-adopted. The merged Club played in the Athenian League until it ceased to operate at the end of the 1983/84 season and then played for 4 seasons in Division 2 North of the Isthmian League. After a period of instability culminating in a year in the wilderness away from Senior football in 1988/89 they were admitted to the Spartan League in 1989/90 retaining Premier Division membership throughout until the South Midlands League merger in season 1997/98 when they finished 7th in the Premier Division South to secure membership of the new “combined” Premier Division for 1998/99 as well as being runners up in the League’s Premier Division Cup. In 2004 after an unsuccessful attempt to move the Club to the nearby New River Sports stadium and a walk out of the existing Committee Aki Achillea who had commenced his association with the Club in 1995 was appointed to lead the Club forward and together with George Kilikita and Secretary John Bacon the club sought to engage more with the local community and tap into the talent locally.
The senior men’s team having been relegated to Division One of the Spartan South Midlands League in 2006/7 bounced back with promotion at the very first attempt and a fine season ended with both promotion and the winning of the Division One Cup. Back in the Premier Division for the season 2008/09 the Club again quickly found itself among the relegation strugglers
Chairman: Aki Achillea
First Team Manager: Tom Loizou
Ground: Coles Park Stadium, Tottenham
Capacity: 2,500 (280 Seated)
leading to the appointment of the current Manager –the vastly experienced Tom Loizou. Tom and his excellent loyal team of coaching staff have been instrumental in turning around the Club’s fortunes in the intervening years.
In 2011/12 a highest ever 5th place was achieved and the League Challenge Trophy won. After massive stadium improvements in the close season with the erection of a new Clubhouse and new dressing rooms hopes were high for 2012/13 but the poor weather and the problematic pitch led to a massive fixture backlog which negated any chance of a serious challenge for honours and the Club finished 9th.
In 2013/14 the Club’s challenge for promotion took place in the Essex Senior League following a sideways switch imposed by the FA. The Club had what was then its most successful season ever finishing runners up by just a solitary point to Great Wakering Rovers and ended the season with 20 wins and one draw from the final 21 League games.
The League title was nevertheless secured at the second attempt in 2014/15 with a haul of 103 points from 38 games and with it promotion to Step 4 in which we were allocated to the Ryman League Division One North. The first season at the higher level was a baptism of fire when only 7 points were garnered from the first 17 games but by the close of the season a further 43 points had been amassed from the remaining 29 games and the Club finished in a comfortable 15th place. The first season in the FA Trophy produced two fine victories before a replay loss to Hitchin Town of the Evostik South Premier Division.
The summer of 2016 saw yet further investment in the close season in the form of a 3G synthetic main pitch and added improvements to the perimeter, the spectator rails and the floodlights and has created a facility of which the Club can be proud; and has afforded a greater opportunity for the Club to move forward in all aspects. The first team in 2016/17 improved markedly on the previous season and had an excellent all round campaign although rather unfortunate not to finish the season on a high having ended with the “double heartbreak” of missing out on promotion through a 4-5 closely fought semi-final playoff defeat at Maldon & Tiptree FC after finishing 5th in the Division and an odd goal 2-3 London Senior Cup semi-final loss at Metropolitan Police.
2017/18 was to be the Club’s best ever and culminated in promotion to Step 3 via the play-off route with a 3-1 win over Canvey Island after automatic promotion had been missed by just two points. And in FA Competitions the 4th and final round of the Qualifying rounds for the FA Cup was reached, although that ended in disappointment with a 2-4 home defeat by Heybridge Swifts who then enjoyed a visit to Exeter City in the First Round Proper. In the FA Trophy we went right through the qualifying campaign and were lucky enough to draw Leyton Orient in the First Round Proper which brought a record attendance of 1,133 to Coles Park and “The O’s” left mightily relieved at having come back to win 2-1 after going a goal down in the fifth minute.
2018/19 was another great but ultimately disappointing season season with an FA Cup run which took us into the First Round Proper where it was ended rather cruelly by AFC Wimbledon’s last minute goal at Coles Park in front of a record crowd of 2,710. Having led the Premier Division for several weeks in mid-season it was somewhat surprising that we dropped from 2nd to 3rd on the last day of the season after a poor late run but still enjoyed home advantage in the Play-Off Semi-final in which a 45 minute second half onslaught on the Tonbridge Angels goal produced only one goal in response to the two they had scored before the interval.
The 2019/20 season’s early termination was less of a disappointment for us than for most other Isthmian Premier Division Clubs as we were marooned in mid-table with no realistic prospect of entering either
the promotion or relegation zones. The highlight of the season should have been the visit of National League Yeovil Town in the Final Qualifying Round of the Emirates FA Cup but, as is well known, appalling crowd behaviour brought that game to an early end and the second game seemed something of an anti-climax. In fact, without making excuses, that unpleasant episode seems to have adversely affected our players for some time for, whereas we had been well in the promotion places mix, thereafter we just drifted downwards.
The early termination of League Fixtures for 2020/21 was more of a blow than was the previous seasons voiding as we were well placed to make a charge towards a play-off place at least. However the Buildbase FA Trophy continued and we enjoyed a run through to the 4th Round Proper when Oxford City of the National League South finally eliminated us 4-2 after we had been two up; en route we had overcome Faversham Town, Bishops Stortford, Eastbourne Borough and Dartford, the last two also being National League South Clubs. The London Senior Cup also carried on and due to withdrawals, we reached the quarter-final without playing a game but lost a penalty shoot out to Hanwell Town after a 2-2 draw.
The 2021/22 season was more or less a non-event as regards any real challenge for the League top spots but the semi-finals of The League Cup and the London Senior Cup were reached with both game ending in odd goal defeats in the space of a week. We may well have set a Club record for the highest number of injuries sustained in any season and that even led to an outside chance of relegation towards the end of the season but the failings of others meant we were never in serious danger.
The foundations are in place for an eventual assault to secure a National League place for the men’s senior side and an exciting season is in prospect in which a challenge for at least a play-off position is a realistic prospect as we pursue our ambition to achieve promotion to the National League should be within the capabilities of our talented squad. The facilities and structures are in place for all the Club’s teams to improve and enhance on recent successes.

DEVELOPMENT TEAM
2016/17 saw the introduction of a much needed “second” team, formed to compete in the Ryman Development League it being basically intended for Under 21 players but with the facility to include up to 4 older players in every squad. The team held their own comfortably in the League finishing a very creditable 6th place and the benefits of the Club’s participation were all too evident with the introduction of a number of players into the first team squad throughout the season and the opportunity for first team squad players to keep fresh and those who were returning from injury had a platform to get fit. Thereby proving the benefits of having such a side. The age restriction was amended to Under 23 for 2017/18 and the team has always been near the top of the table, continued to do well in the following seasons and won the North Division Championship in 2021/22 but lost to South Division Champions Hastings United in the “Champion of Champions” play-off.
YOUTH TEAM
Youth teams were commenced and run successfully for many years at various age levels with some considerable success particularly at the older age groups including progress into the 2nd round proper of the FA Youth Cup in 2006/07. They were Divisional winners of the Southern Counties Floodlit Youth League in 2004/05 (and also winners of the League’s Colwyn Cup competition) and 2009/10. After a few seasons absence from Youth football the Under 18s rejoined the Southern Counties competition in 2017/18, winning its Divisional Championship at the first attempt and finishing towards the top of the table in the following seasons. This will again provide a pathway for talented local boys to make their way into the first team squad and ultimately the first team itself.
WOMEN’S TEAM
The Women’s Team was formed in 1999 and competed in the Eastern Region Womens League winning promotion in its first season and then to its Premier Division for 2002/03; and there they have remained save for two seasons, the first being in 2011/12 following relegation to Division 1 from which they made an immediate Premier Division return as runners-up. Steady improvement began and we were extremely fortunate to have been approached midway through the 2014/15 season by renowned coach and former professional footballer Steve Browne who at the time was involved in the highly successful S & T Academy Girls football .Steve was duly appointed Manager and preserved the Women’s Premier Division status. In 2015/16 a mid table position was easily secured from an uneven campaign which included convincing away wins at the top 2 Clubs and some surprisingly disappointing performances against lower placed teams. In 2017/18, by Christmas the team were runaway League leaders only to be thrown off course by the tragic early death of Steve on New Years Day but after a shaky period the Women re-asserted themselves to win the League Championship on the last day of the season and with it, promotion to the Women’s Premier League and followed that up by adding the League Cup with a 5-1 win over Cambridge City to complete the double which was a a fitting, lasting legacy for their Manager. The loss of many of the successful squad, several to American University Scholarships, proved too much of a handicap at the higher level and relegation back to the Eastern Regional League was an unsurprising outcome. Now under the stewardship of Bobby Cato significant steps forward seem certain and promotion is again a realistic prospect. An exceptionally young and talented squad was unlucky to find itself in danger of relegation towards the end of the 2021/22 season due to a high number of odd goal defeats but pulled clear with 4 vital points from the last two games. They look capable of going places if they stick together when experience is added to their armoury.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN HUFC & CHR
Conquest Hospital Community radio (CHr) and Hastings United (HUFC) have tied up a community partnership deal with both supporting each other.
As part of the deal, CHr broadcast an HUFC advert and a jingle to publicise the club, guests from the club have been on live shows and CHr broadcasts live match reports and live commentaries.
In return, HUFC have put a banner up for CHr at the Continental Pilot Field Stadium, have an advert for the station and occasional write up’s in matchday programmes.
HUFC Commercial Director, Hayley Clout, said, ‘HUFC are a very community minded club and us promoting our local Hospital community radio station and CHr promoting us is a real win win’.
CHr Chair, Graham Belchamber, said ‘CHr is an expanding radio station broadcasting to Conquest Hospital patients and staff and on-line across the area and worldwide. We are made up with this arrangement and HUFC’s generosity.
You can listen to CHr and contact CHr on www.conquesthospitalradio.co.uk, on its own App and streaming services.
Pictured from left to right by the banner in the ground are CHr radio show presenters ... ellis Piddock, Jeff Belton, Graham Belchamber and Abi Olorenshaw with HUFC Commercial Director Hayley Clout.
LEAGUE NEWS
FROM IAN THOMPSON
Bay boss Smith steps down
Herne Bay have announced that manager Ben Smith has left his post, following yesterday's defeat at Corinthian-Casuals.
Ben has been in charge of the side since the summer of 2019, and led them to promotion via the play-off's last season. Prior to his time at Bay, he was the manager who led Canterbury City to the FA Vase SemiFinal.
Velocity Cup - Round 4
Round 4 is scheduled to be completed by the end of November, and the draw looks like this:
Aveley v Bowers & Pitsea
Binfield / Sutton Common R v Leatherhead / Kingstonian
Carshalton Athletic/South Park v Walton & Hersham /Southall
Chatham Town/Sittingbourne v Herne Bay/Sevenoaks Town
Margate v Folkestone Invicta
Haringey Borough v Enfield Town
Hullbridge Sports v Potters Bar Town
Whitehawk v Hastings United
Bognor borrow a Wanderer
Bognor Regis Town recently announced the arrival of Dorking Wanderers defender Cameron Black, who moves to Nyewood Lane on an initial one month loan.
Cameron came through the Academy at Meadowbank, playing for the Under 18's and Under 23's before graduating to the first team squad last season. He isn't entirely unknown to our league as he had a loan spell at Leatherhead last season, playing twenty nine times and scoring an impressive five goals. Two of those appearances were against the Rocks - a three-two defeat for the Tanners, and a two-two draw.
He has already had another loan spell this season, at National League South side Hampton & Richmond Borough.
Wands bring in Bamba
Cray Wanderers have announced the signing of Yahaya Bamba from Sevenoaks Town - and gave him a debut in their win over Leyton Orient in the London Senior Cup in midweek.
Yahaya was an enormous success for Oaks. This season he has scored three goals in his seventeen matches, but played an enormous part in their FA Cup and FATrophy successes - whilst last season he was a revelation, joining the club when they were in danger of relegation and scoring ten goals in nine matches, including a hat-trick against that other side from Cray.
