Welcome everyone to The Continental Pilot Field, it’s April Fools but let’s not make no joke as we come to the business end of the season.
I would like to welcome the directors, staff, management, players and supporters of Herne Bay today. With 6 games to go it’s still possible, we have done incredibly well in our first season to be around the playoff hunt and with a bit of luck and a good run anything is still possible. First up today is Herne Bay who are in a fight of their own so have it all to play for, today is no guarantee.
It was great to go back to The Oval in Sussex Cup action Tuesday as we got over the line vs Eastbourne United. Seeing that place filled with Hastings United fans and some old faces from my previous club was lovely, it was even better to come out with the win and no egg on my face. Credit to EUAFC who gave their all and held us in really awful conditions.
Today let’s get our beautiful old girl, The Pilot Field, rocking as we get behind our lads. COYU
Welcome all to today's match against Herne Bay.
At the moment Herne Bay find themselves in a relegation battle, but I feel they've improved significantly under the guidance of Kevin Watson. I rarely speak to other managers, but Kev is someone I'm frequently on the phone to and we both value each other’s opinions.
We now have six league games left. A gap has appeared so we need to make to most of the games we have left. We will take one game at a time and see where it takes us.
I urge you all to get behind us this afternoon and here’s hoping we can make the end of the season an interesting one.
Onwards and upwards! ...

Good afternoon everyone.
Welcome back to the Continental Pilot Field after a disappointing away result last Saturday against Canvey Island, but a fantastic win that went to penalties on Tuesday night in the Sussex Senior Cup. As always a big thank you to our amazing fans and good luck to all today.
I would like to welcome and thank our Match Sponsor to today's game, KB Calibration Services Ltd who are a UKAS accredited dimensional calibration laboratory based here in Hastings. They were established in 1991, providing quick turnaround high quality calibration services to customers right across the UK and abroad. They supply all types of Gauges and Measuring Equipment accompanied with calibration certificates, all offered at competitive prices.
We thank Jack for all his support and we hope you and your guests enjoy the matchday with us.
I would also like to welcome and thank Tom Newman who is our Matchball Sponsor for the remainder of the season. Tom has been involved with and a supporter of the Club since October 1979, he had various roles at the Club before retiring in 2012 and moving to Eastbourne but still attends all home game and some away games to this day.
Thank you Tom for all your support, it’s very much appreciated.
A big thank you and welcome to our Mascots for today's game, our U10s Academy team. We hope you all have a great day with us and enjoy the Matchday experience.
Finally, I would like to welcome and thank Ashdown Hurrey and Global Re Group, who are joining us today for some corporate hospitality. We hope you all enjoy your day with us and we look forward to welcoming you back again in the near future.
Enjoy the game and hopefully 3 points! ...

My views - not United's - on semi-pro football and occasionally, other topics.
Yea, that 3-1 defeat alongside the Thames Estuary on Saturday is still a little hard to accept. That sequence of four big play off target games saw us at Canvey Island who have been on an exceptional run of form with their previous game seeing them win 2-0 at Lewes - The Rooks first home loss of 22/23. We, of course, had our momentum disrupted by the Billericay postponement last Saturday - immensely frustrating watching everyone else get their games in as we dropped to 9th.
The U's contributed fully to a decent game which featured two sides who had come up the previous season. Canvey Island won the Isthmian North play offs after finishing runners up behind Aveley who have also more than adapted to the higher standard.
performance from a squad missing several key men. No reward - yes, harsh.
This is Craig Stone finishing off a corner to put United ahead on 31 minutes. Decent first half on a compact pitch in a low slung stadium, the U's deserved that interval lead. Canvey were better in the 2nd half but our lads were doing fine and it took a great long range effort to see us go behind with a late penalty rubbing it in. All this after Freddie Legg had a decent case for a penalty turned down to the disgust of the sizeable U's contingent. A more than decent
All the talk is of yes to digital, no - stick with the printed version - but how about this for a programme? Brilliant idea.
Mused on this two or three weeks ago. 4 big games coming up after the frustrating draw here with Wingate & Finchley. More frustration as one of them - the only one in the division - Billericay here - postponed. A waterlogged pitch is a rare
Plenty of United followers behind that Canvey Island goal celebrating Stoney putting us 1-0 up.animal here these days but there it was - game off. Grrrrrrrr!
So, three games it was - D W L. One of each. That win - what a win.
now and, of course, who can forget the football team's European Championship campaign last season. Wrexham's Women's team won the Welsh League recently - deciding game seen by 9,511 spectators.
And here at Hastings Utd, Women's football has taken off recently. With a youngster's academy like set-up which - give it time - will see girls making their way up the age stages to the first team.
The comeback at Bishop's Stortford. Two down with 17 minutes left, Freddie gets us back into it then in the dying minutes, two great goals from Sam Adams and Ben Pope. Pandemonium behind the goal after the dugout emptied (like Sittingbourne away last season) and players, subs, anyone connected with the club - and supporters, enjoyed Ben's goal. That curling effort from the corner of the box was a carbon copy of what he tried against Enfield - a top class save resulting. Not this time.
Special mention to all of you who capture United's progress on video and stills. Scott White, Joe Knight and Neo Bridges (I managed to have a chat with Neo at Canvey) plus from behind the goal - Pete Grain, Howard Ralph and John Wills who, jointly, have preserved some classic moments. Marvellous what you can do with a half decent photo edit app - grab stills off videos etc etc. Keep up the good work, y'all!
No doubt about it. Women are making big incursions into what was thought to be exclusive territory for us blokes. My top sport is Rugby Union and the England Women's team is right up there, we have a more than decent cricket set up
This is well worth a look via the link in Mel Elliott's tweet. There is so much good that can come out of a football club bringing on local talent at all age groups and the girls U12s are reaping the benefits.
An onside local authority should take note of what United are doing in the locality with our young uns. Let's have no more of this talk of having to relocate out of Hastings, eh, HBC?
That memorable 21/22 season - memorable for today's visitors as much as it was for us after
continued from P09
they came up via the blood pressure busting play-offs - it all started with 949 through the turnstiles to see the U's draw 1-1 with Herne Bay. They are here today just as needy for 3 points as we are. I thought they were down and out recently but 3 wins in their last 5 games see them a couple of points from safety with Kingstonian wobbling just above them. There's a lot hinging on today's game for both sides. In a perfect world we squeeze into the play-offs and they stay up!
Hearing that the rescheduled Billericay gameTuesday - is re-rescheduled to accomodate a Sussex Senior Cup tie. Really? How can that competition take precedence over league fixtures? If this is so, I don't get it!
Popped into Tonbridge station ticket office to catch up with an old railway mate on Saturday and Pete being the not so perfect host offered me a tea .......
Club Founded: 1886
First Team Manager: Kevin Watson
Ground: Winch’s Field, Herne Bay
Capacity: 3,000
Nickname: The Bay League titles. The 1996/97 season was without equal in the history of the Kent League. Within the space of four weeks, the Club won the Kent Senior Trophy, The Kent League Division 1 Cup and The Kent League Championship. A unique treble!
It could be argued that Herne Bay FC had their most successful season in their 125th year. Having been runner-up two years running in the Kent League they secured the League Championship with games to spare and had a superb run in the FA Vase becoming only the second Kent League club to reach the semi-final stage where they went out to the Northern League side West Auckland Town over the two legs by the odd goal in seven (4-3.) Herne Bay was formed in 1886 and began life in the East Kent League, then having a short period in the Kent League before winning the East Kent League in four successive years between 1902 and 1906 returning to the Kent League as a result.
1953 saw the move to Winch’s Field. Over 1,000 spectators saw their first match at their new home; a 2 - 2 draw against Tunbridge Wells Reserves in Kent League Division 2. Within two years they lifted the Division 2 title, winning promotion to Division 1. In the 1957/58 season, the club won The Kent Amateur Cup beating Bromley 2 - 0 in the final. The following season saw the Kent League fold and a move to the Aetolian League followed. The 1964/65 season saw another move to Division 2 of the Athenian League, where they enjoyed several successful seasons followed by promotion to Division 1 on winning Division 2 in 1970/71. A good run in the FA Cup saw the Bay reach the 4th qualifying round, where they lost to the then ‘mighty’ Margate in front of a record home attendance of 2,303.
At the start of the 1974/75 campaign the Club returned to the Kent League, and in the 1978/79 season they had good runs in the Cup competitions; defeating Welling United in the Kent Senior Trophy and losing to Sheppey United in the Kent League Cup. The nineties saw the Club become the most successful and consistent side in the Kent League, winning four Kent
A complete change of management and playing staff took place after the 1997-98 season, with manager Tommy Sampson leaving the Club to take over the reins at Deal Town taking the majority of the established first-team players with him. That Deal Town side became the first Kent League club to win the FA Vase at Wembley in the last ever Vase Final staged at the old stadium in May 2000. The team had a fantastic 2000/01 season finishing runners-up in the Premier Division, scoring 93 goals in the league. Nick Denly (father of England cricketer Joe Denly) received an unprecedented three manager of the month awards in his first full season at the helm.
However, the 2001/02 season proved to be one of great disappointment. Exiting all cup competitions at the first round stage and finishing a poor 7th position in the league, despite being one of the few teams to defeat league and cup double winners, Maidstone. A major grant was awarded to provide new perimeter fencing and refurbishment of the changing facilities and these works were completed before the start of the 2003/04 season when the club celebrated 50 years at Winch’s Field. Former Gillingham and Maidstone player, Jason Lillis took over the reins for the 2004/05 season which proved to be very successful as Bay finished runnerup in both the League and League Cup, losing out to Ramsgate in both competitions.
Both the 2005/06 and 2006/07 seasons proved to be very disappointing and with several senior players, and Jason, leaving the Club during the 2007/08 season, the Club built on the success of Herne Bay Youth with the
introduction of several very good young players into the first-team squad. This proved very beneficial and these players formed the basis of the first-team squad for this 2008/09 season. Along with some very influential experienced players introduced by a new manager, Barry Morgan, the Club had high hopes for a successful 2008/09 campaign. Unfortunately, a run of five defeats in six matches in October severely dented any promotion prospects. Despite a twelve-match winning sequence, Bay fell just short at the end of the campaign and a defeat in the final match saw them finish in 6th position in the League. The majority of the young squad was retained for the 2009/10 season and with new sponsors, there was a renewed optimism within the Club.
With the appointment of Simon Halsey as Manager, Herne Bay FC pushed on to finish runners-up in the Kent League Premier Division two seasons running, the second of those going down to the last few minutes of the last match where a goal at Tunbridge Wells gave Hythe Town the title. But, in season 2011/12 Herne Bay swept all before them, narrowly missing out on a Wembley appearance in the FA Vase and capturing the Kent League Premier Division title and promotion to the Ryman League.
The 2013/14 season saw another new start for the Bay with Sam Denly (son of former manager Nick Denly) taking up the managerial reigns following a disappointing first season in the Ryman League where immediate relegation back to Step 5 was narrowly avoided. Achieved highest ever finish and points total in the 2014/15 campaign in Herne Bay‘s third season at this level. In the 2015/16 season, Bay faired even better, sitting in the play-off position for most of the season and with some poor results in March Bay finally finished 8th, surpassing their highest finish in the Isthmian league achieved in the previous season. Retaining all the players for the 2016/17 season Bay expected to achieve a better position, but many poor results in the early part of the season set the tone for the rest of the campaign. Bay hovered around the relegation zone until late January. The player's budget was cut and immediately there was an improvement in results. A ten-match unbeaten run saw Bay climb away from the
relegation zone with an eventual finish in 17th place. Sam Denly resigned at the end of the season and all of the players left the club. New managers, and professional players, John Embery and Jermaine Darlington, were appointed and they have built a new team comprising, a large number of very talented young players, along with some experienced older players.
This is the second time in the last 17 years that a new side has been formed and to blood these youngsters into what always proves to be a very competitive level of football. the club were delighted with a mid-table finish in 12th place.
For 2018/19, a couple of players moved on but with new signings, Embery was looking for a higher finish, maybe even a shot at reaching the playoffs. Unfortunately, things didn’t go according to plan, with the club fighting against relegation for most of the season. Only a very good run in the latter part saw the club move out of the relegation zone; eventually finishing 15th. Embery and Darlington quit on 30th March. Anthony Deer and Alan Birchard took over with six fixtures still to play. Rumours were rife about the clubs’ future with social media claiming the club was going to fold. Despite these issues a consortium led by the new chairman, Stuart Fitchie, took over the running of the club, bringing in Ben Smith and his backroom staff to manage the team.
Sadly Covid-19 disrupted what could have been a very successful season, as Herne Bay were 5th place with a play-off position looking achievable. 2019/20 was halted with only six league games played, and as things stand in 21/22 a promising start again has us in 6th place dreaming of a record-breaking season.
2021/22 turned out to be a historic year for the Bay as we gained promotion via the playoffs to reach Step 3 level for the first time. Our early season promise faded in January and it looked like we may miss out on the playoffs. However, a strong finish culminated in victories over Haywards Heath in front of 1,102 and the MBS Stadium and a 2-0 win at Ashford United in the Final at their ground when our travelling support among 1865 had a day to celebrate.

Prior to victory over Brightlingsea Regent, Lewes announced the arrival of two new players - Ryan Huckle and Jayden Davis.
Jayden went on to make his debut, playing the first eighty-four minutes in front of a crowd of 506.
Centre-back Ryan came through the youth setup at Gillingham, spending time on loan at Ramsgate and Dover Athletic. The end of his time with the Gills saw him sign for Faversham Town, where he made twenty-two appearances during 2018-19 and another three during 2019-20. Hastings United, Leatherhead and East Grinstead Town were his next ports of call, before he spent time at Ramsgate and at Erith & Belvedere. This season has seen him play twenty-five times at Bowers & Pitsea.
Midfielder Jayden joins on loan from League Two side Crawley Town, where he has been a regular part of the first team squad. He previously played at Youth, U18 and U21 level for Millwall, also spending some time on loan at Kings Lynn Town.
Enfield Town and Hornchurch have to settle for a point each on Donkey Lane in a 1-1 draw.
Pitching In Isthmian Premier leaders Hornchurch continue to look vulnerable, and last Tuesday night the Urchins managed to hold onto a lead for less that sixty seconds as Enfield Town hit back to claim a draw. Just before the break the Urchins took the lead, Liam Nash turning home a cross for his twenty-first of the campaign - and scoring in three games in a row. The visitors had hardly finished celebrating, however, when Johnville Renee charged forward, played a one-two with Andre Coker, and delivered an immediate response.
After the break the Urchins leading scorer Sam Higgins saw one chance go wide and another saved, whilst at the other end a free kick from Lyle Della-Verse was cleared off the line, but both sides had to be satisfied with a point.
Canterbury City to share Hartsdown Park with Margate.
Fans of Margate will have another club to watch when their own side aren't playing, after SCEFL side Canterbury City agreed a groundshare at Hartsdown Park next season.
City, who have most recently been sharing with Sittingbourne, last had a stadium of their own more than two decades ago. During the last ten years, as well as the Brickies, they have shared with Herne Bay, Ashford United, Deal Town and Faversham Town.
Everyone at the club has been so unbelievably kind, caring and respectful.
Allowing us to bring Bill Farnfield to the ground before his funeral service.
Then the wake, the bar staff were wonderful. Even though everyone was working hard for the ground inspection David, Billy, Pat and Hayley all took the time to come and see us.
Being allowed to put Bill’s floral tribute on the penalty spot at the end was priceless.
My family are totally overwhelmed by the club accommodating my wishes.
Thank you so much, it means the world to me to have given my dad a perfectly fitting send off.

G XI - PLAYERS WEAR SQUAD NUMBER SHIRTS Photos: Scott White PhotographyA statement was recently released about the Tilekiln Project and the 2023/24 season. In addition to publishing on the Club website the Statement was also sent to the Hastings United Fans Forum and the Hastings Independent Supporters Club. The Club will now issue Bulletins from time to time to update Fans, Sponsors and other interested parties about matters affecting the Club, including player details and general club operations.
This is a first step in re-engaging with all our supporters and sponsors and we acknowledge that previously we have not been communicating as we all would have liked.
In releasing information we would ask that people recognise that sometimes giving an immediate response to events may not always be possible because of commercial or legal sensitivity or reasons of personal privacy. However, a response will be given when and if appropriate.
The Club has recently established a Management Committee to review and examine club operations and we welcome any suggestions on all aspects of the Club and what would enhance and improve your attendance at any of our matches. Members of the Committee are Pat McCrossan, Dave Ormerod, Billy Wood, Hayley Clout, Craig Barrow, Dave Russell, Ben White, James Hopkins, Steve Brook, Adam Smith and Bob Hodgson. Whenever possible the Club owners, Daren Burney and Peter Sherlock will also join with the group. Please feel free to have a chat with any of the Committee on a match day or e-mail the Club.

As we journey forward on what hopefully will be another fantastic season for the Men’s and Women’s teams we ask for your assistance on one matter which has recently been reported by some of our supporters, visitors and officials from other clubs.
We at the Club know we have the best fan base in the Isthmian League and we also have the best attendance record in the League. Even at away games our army of supporters are amazing. However, it has become an increasing habit for some of the fans to chant at the opposing teams or match officials using offensive language. We have no wish to ask that chanting at the opponents or indeed officials should stop but please, please find some new, more imaginative and creative chants. Beat the drum, be LOUD and PROUD. We pride ourselves on being a family friendly club and it is great to see so many Mums and Dads with children at the games and of course all the young mascots and Academy girls and boys. They do not deserve to hear bad language. Please accept this request in the spirit in which it is intended.
