My motivation to become an architect is centred around the creative, innovative, environmental and social impacts involved within the discipline. Design shapes our everyday life, from the everyday spaces we occupy, right down to the mundane. When I think about my own design as an architectural student, my main aspiration is to create spaces that rethink and challenge the way in which everyday spaces are inhabited, fabricated and implemented. My aim in every aspect that I design is to create poetic, timeless and multifunctional spaces and places that put the human and its environment first. I aim to celebrate and combine the environmental needs, human spirit and technological advancements into all that I design. I believe in creating spaces for humans, by humans. I am a Recent Bachelor of Design a major in both completing this with
graduate of the reformatted at University of Melbourne with architecture and construction Second Class Honours Division A.

A singular flow of concrete blends seamlessly through the landscape along a datum line situated diagonally across the site. Like the flow of water following the contour of the land the entity rises, drops and shifts, creating affordances for privacy, shelter, exchange and play in all weather conditions. It is a singular and static entity providing affordances for a plethora of dynamic experiences. The skaters dance across the surface, never do they experience the same line twice. They offload their stolen goods to the community waiting patiently underneath the ground plane for them to arrive. There journey finishes with a climactic decent into a 4 m deep bowl. Sheltered by the existing tree. Now secluded and hidden from the perils of the city, there spatial progression complete. Yet they are always ready for the next task and next adventure as they turn to face the city and the open-ended possibilities that this space provides.

The site program was generated from a field condition derived from a hypothetical landscape used to generate a pattern/ system . The differing spaces in which the contours have created allows for the buildings to stem from the landscape. By utilizing contours this pattern is not only subjected to the site but can extend infinitely outwards forming a new language and system of forms interlinked to each other. The pattern also allows for forms to be removed or added whilst not ruining the overall program, aesthetic relationship and overall poetics of the site. The site has been built from the bottom up to create an ever-expanding system that can adapt and change to each generation and society. The program respects the impermanence of technology and the built industry, allowing for parts to be removed and added overtime whilst not affecting the overall scheme or program. The idea around my site involved, creating an artist’s commune in which sculptors could come and make their work and display it onsite, whilst also looking after the pleasure gardens themselves. By doing so the gardens would be continually changing as new sculptors add and subtract their work, allowing the public to see engage not only in the gardens but also the artwork around them. The forms of my buildings were then not only influenced by my site condition but took on a sculptural aspect keeping in touch with the theme of the site. All buildings apart from the private function room can be occupied from the ground level as well as the roof giving back the footprint taken on the earth.

The clientele for the project were a young family with 1 child as well as grandparents moving from the outer suburbs into the innercity suburb of Carlton. The Mullet house draws on themes of Australian suburbia, place making and memories. It looks at celebrating the Australian suburban lifestyle instead of denouncing it. The program of the house is centred around a courtyard typology allowing for indoor outdoor connection on such a narrow block. The Building takes inspiration from its surrounding context looking at the Victorian heritage and traditional forms and materials and implementing it in a new context. It is a house that can adapt to its clientèle , as well as age gracefully into its surrounding context.

A house that celebrates what it means to grow up in Australia, not looking at stereotypical vernacular typologies such as the tin shed, but looking at how a house can frame the everyday items of Australian suburbia, whilst still linking form and materiality to its existing surroundings. A house that evokes childhood memories and acts as a catalyst for new experiences and moments to be created. A serious house and a fun house, a house of permanence and impermanence. A mullet house (business in the front and party out the back.)

The site is situated on MacArthur place which is a part of the wider suburb of Carlton. The statistics on Carlton detail it as one of the lowest socio-economic suburbs apart of the inner city suburbs, with students making up majority of the population. Multi Highrise social housing, is situated a few 100 meters north, in the suburb of north Carlton.
With these factors in mind, my project ? was aimed at affordable housing that NSITY & COMMUNITY could be adapted over time to suit the needs of all occupants. A focus was put on modulation and community, by creating smaller shared spaces instead of 1 large communal space. A focus was not only put on the occupants but also the wider community, integrating a commercial café, garden area and public study space on the ground floor and activating Nicholls lane for the wider community to enjoy. The project explores modulation, and the integration of in-between space for public and shared use.

TH E L IB RARY & TH E C U BE T H E GRID & ME
The task set was to design a personal Library within a 3m cube. The library had to have the capacity to hold 900 books, a reading space for 1, a working space for 1, public circulation, and a lending interface between the library and the circulation. Every cube was given a different access and egress point(2 m x 1m) within the studio. I have experimented with the module of the shelf and repeated it to create not only the functional aspect of the bookshelf but also to create the structural aspect of the space. A self supporting tensile structure. The aim was to melt the frame into thin air, hovering and highlighting the books to create a dichotomy between the lightness of the frame and the mass of the books. The path too hovers above the ground reflecting and blending into its surrounding environment. The rigidity of the structure was then softened using fluid connections and flowing forms in contrast to the square and rigid books. The egress path flows around the full area of the cube allowing the occupants to experience the full extent of the space. A multifunctional design, a place to read , a place to dream, a place to reflect and a place to inspire.

When Robert Hoddle put forward his plan for the Hoddle grid in 1837, he set out to put order to the existing wild and vast topography of what was to become Melbourne city. For me the grid represents a way in which chaos can be controlled. The use of a city library is changing. It no longer serves as just a quiet place to read. It now serves as an important public space in which views can be challenged, new knowledge can be gained, and new experiences had. The library must be capable of changing and adapting over time to suit the needs of its inhabitants. A building shaped by its users for its users. A vessel or system that can continue to change and adapt. The grid in my project is the systemized facilitator/structure and the spaces inside formed and created by the objects held within the structure. The grid floats into thin air, allowing the objects inside to express the ephemeral and ever changing form of the building. In a sense it is an attempt of a transparent, formless architecture. A dichotomy between light and heavy, chaos and tranquillity, rigidity and fluidity, the signifier and the signified. It is a library that not only celebrates the book but the freedom of public space.

COMMU NITY H E A L TH C A RE CARL TON CO N N E C T A community health centre that acknowledges the past present and the future, Focusing heavily on the large community of indigenous Australians in the Fitzroy area. The healthcare centre has not only been designed with a deep programmatically connection to the land and its environment but also refers in form to the existing landscape, utilizing the contours of the site to generate the form of the building. The Arches used as the CLT frame make reference to the traditional brick arch most likely used in the 1884 primary school that existed on the site before VIC roads. The use of CLT has been extensively used in this design for environmental and psychological reasons. The healthcare centre itself aims to become a beacon of hope within the community of Carlton and the wider areas. It aims to destroy the institutional feeling of a clinic and integrate medical disciplines in order to create a new and improved method of healthcare.

DI GI T AL D E S IGN LA S ER C U T F AB R I C A T I O N The structure created utilized grasshopper parametric techniques to go from modelling space to fabrication. By utilizing grasshopper, multiple iterations were performed in order to create the best form for fabrication and concept. The panels were designed to change with the sun’s rotation with point attractors, giving the structure an ephemeral quality as it changes through time and space. The waffle structure created with grasshopper creates the structural framing, giving the model clear boundaries and circulation paths developed through its spiral formation and defined edge. The rigid triangulated panels have been juxtaposed against the loose flow of the waffle to create a unified and dynamic form.

The aim of my pavilion was to create a landmark in the site that decayed or sprawled out of the land around it. The brief of 15 people for a seminar and 30 for a concert formed the base massing and programme for the pavilion. The main entry has been situated at the lower slope of the site whereas the rear entry at the higher allowing for late comers to enter without disturbing the concert/seminar. By building into the landscape and sloping the ground plane the seating can also be used as stairs. The main entry has been situated off one of the main walking routes to entice the public towards the pavilion. The denser webbing at the rear protects the occupants seated from the elements, whereas the thinner at the front allows for the speaker/concert to be viewed from both inside the pavilion and out. By using a luminescent fiberglass, the pavilion can be utilized in both day and night setting, creating a landmark within the city.

PROFESSIONAL WO R K
During my fulltime university load, I also worked 2 days a week at an architectural firm during the semester and full time in the university holidays. I was responsible, under supervision from the project architect, in steering small projects through all project stages including through project definition, briefing, budgeting, design, documentation, development approval, building approval, consultant coordination, tendering through to contract administration. This experience has helped in understanding the process of building projects from inception to ultimate delivery.
