The clientele for the project were a young family with 1 child as well as grandparents moving from the outer suburbs into the innercity suburb of Carlton. The Mullet house draws on themes of Australian suburbia, place making and memories. It looks at celebrating the Australian suburban lifestyle instead of denouncing it. The program of the house is centred around a courtyard typology allowing for indoor outdoor connection on such a narrow block. The Building takes inspiration from its surrounding context looking at the Victorian heritage and traditional forms and materials and implementing it in a new context. It is a house that can adapt to its clientèle , as well as age gracefully into its surrounding context.
2
THE AUSTRALIAN DREAM ? The Idea of a house that celebrates what it means to grow up in Australia, not looking at stereotypical vernacular typologies such as the tin shed, but looking at how the house could frame the everyday items of Australian suburbia, whilst still linking form and materiality to its existing surroundings. A house that evokes child hood memories and acts as a catalyst for new experiences and moments to be created. A serious house and a fun house, a house of permanence and impermanence. 2 CHILDREN, LIVE IN WORK.
1 CHILD/ADULT, LIVE IN WORK.
The house has been adapted so that the eldest child is able to live in the grandparents room and the youngest is able to live upstairs. A meeting room/ workspace has also been implemented into the second level, with access straight from the lane-way to avoid clients coming into the full premise of the house.
The house has been adapted to allow for a fully self contained occupancy at the rear of the property. The property could then be zoned into two sections, or continue to share the internal courtyard. It is noted that the study can still be used for live in work in this scenario.

CANNING
Rapid densification has triggered a high demand for housing in Melbourne. The outer suburbs are experiencing massive growth outwards, with what is known as urban sprawl. The inner city has become inundated with Highrise apartments, with little regard for the occupant and a higher regard for financial gain. This project focuses on the concept of infill housing. Diversifying and densifying. The site is situated in MacArthur place which is a part of the suburb of Carlton. The statistics on Carlton detail it as one of the lowest socio-economic suburbs apart of the inner city suburbs, with students making up majority of the population. Multi Highrise social housing, is situated a few 100 meters north, in the suburb of north Carlton. With these factors in mind, my project was aimed at affordable housing that could be adapted over time to suit the needs of all occupants. A focus was put on modulation and community, by creating smaller shared spaces instead of 1 large communal space. A focus was not only put on the occupants but also the wider community, integrating a commercial cafĂŠ, garden area and public study space on the ground floor by activating Nicholls lane for the wider community to enjoy. The project explores modulation, and the integration of in-between space for public and shared use.

DENSITY & COMMUNITY ?
The film Mon Oncle by Jacque Tati highlights the power a simple intertwining stair can have, creating opportunity for human contact, relationships and communities to be formed through visual connection. Drawing reference from both Cedric price’s fun palace and James wines Highrise of homes, an emphasis has been put on an architecture of growth and adaption over monolithic and permanent. An architecture that places the occupant first without sacrificing the amenities one is used to in a typical suburban home.

Modules of 4.5 x 9m (40.5 sqm) used to create 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments that could be adapted and changed over time, utilizing a steel frame for structural support. The traditional courtyard housing apartment has been deconstructed to allow for a similar number of density as well as commercial and public amenities.

Taking reference from pure geometries and materials found from around the Carlton context and integrating the existing heritage faรงades the brick second skin/ faรงade gives a sense of permanence juxtaposed against the light weight structure. The faรงade allows the occupants the choice of privacy or outdoor connection as well as connecting the building to place.
