Design Introduction
The project is a group project and involves designing a Cigarette receptacle,
Our research and interviews helped in creating a more accurate assessment of what challenges that current receptacle model is facing. The receptacles have tops that can be easily popped off with the correct tools and subject to abuse. The current cleaning method is inefficient and ineffective. The receptacles are easy to fill up. The strategy of receptacles installation locations is outdated. Lack of snuffing plate on current model cause the problem dirty appearance. The large opening makes the receptacle can be stuffed with other litters and percolated by rain and snow.
in partial compliance with the terms of the City of Edmonton, Capital City Clean Up Cigarette Receptacle Design Competition. Our role as the design team is to research and develop the design for a cigarette receptacle. Cigarette butts are a significant source of small litter in Edmonton. To combat this environmental problem, the City of Edmonton installed cigarette butt receptacles at strategic locations across the city in 2010. Cigarette butt receptacles have proved to be a crucial method of decreasing cigarette litter within the city. However, despite the success, there have been challenges associated with cigarette butte receptacles.
Clients
As for the result, we have developed the C-Pod Cigarette Receptacle. A pod receptacle for cigarette butts. C-Pod Cigarette Receptacle is designed with rounded surfaces that look sharp and wipe clean in seconds. A relatively flat surface design for receptacle bottom makes it extremely difficult to open with necessary security key tool. The receptacle is easy to open and secure lock. With our twist opening mechanism and unique pentagon key system, the theft-proof security design prevents the unit being tampered and vandalized. Our receptacles are made from high strength marine grade stainless steel. High volume and easy to clean, with our increased size from the current model and pull-pour speed emptying method; liquid free and plate for snuffing, with the indented opening section design and snuffing plate, prevent any possible liquid from rain, snow, or man-made water pouring and snuff the cigarette on the receptacle outer shell. A small opening design minimizes the possibility of non-cigarette butt trash being placed into units, also minimize the possibility of smoldering and ignition.

How to open the receptacle ?
Exploded View
Each C-Pod receptacle unit will be equipped with a security key tool. The key is a piece pentagon shape steel with rubber molded handle, which is the same shape as the hole at the bottom of the receptacle. Users with this key tool can open the receptacle with an easy two-step action, insert the key into the keyhole and twist the inner container clockwise, it will move away from the dense texture so that the inner container could slide out. Once it’s unlocked, the cleaning crew can pull the inner container out and empty the cigarette butts by just pouring it. After the empty process, the inner container can be inserted in and twisted clockwise to lock up, as the indication of hitting the stop block inside the outer shell.
The shapes welded on both sides of the surface of the tubes allow it twist and stop the inner tube falling down. The outside tube has a stop pieces to stop the tube rotating.
