DESIGN

KEEPS

ME

MOVING

F O R W A R D.

As a designer, going from raw materials to a final product is my motivation to keep learning, working, and iterating. GO is a collection of selected work that reflects these personal journeys throughout my MFA. This collection of work represents my observations, discoveries, and interpretations and how I got from point A to point Z, working out everything in between, pushing through, and just going. This process is what keeps me in a constant state of motion, and what makes me excited about what the next step will bring.

APPROACH Targeting a niche community of innovators, Vinci is branded as a line of high-quality, sustainable paint inspired by Leonardo da Vinci's artistic and scientific innovations and studies. Grounded in history, culture, and experimentation, Vinci relies on quality and detail over anything else. Its identity represents an elegant and modern voice and is driven by a passion for exploring unique and rare colors found in nature that are unique to the brand. The packaging design relies on the company’s theme for high-quality handcrafted materials that place the user experience above anything else.

FAST FORWARD

APPROACH Flick Forward focuses on changing how users interact with their video streaming services. The app functions as a universal search and brings all the tv shows and movies across all their apps and services in one place. Functioning as a funnel, it helps users look up tv shows and movies and connects them to their service provider without having them physically look up the program on each site. It allows the users to program their accounts to help keep all their shows and movies in one place.

APPROACH Lands End concept book is based on a day hike through San Francisco’s coastal trail park at Lands End. The narrative of the book takes place on an extremely foggy day and is told in a first person narrative that depicts a recurring nightmare that is happening due to fear. The idea behind the book is about getting lost in a nightmare filled with fear and paranoia and is recorded by breath count, steps, time, miles, and startled moments.

06 RUN AWAY

APPROACH P.T. Anderson’s films need no better introduction than the likes of “Magnolia,” “Boogie Nights,” or “There Will Be Blood”. Anderson has made films in a number of genres, focused on loneliness and family dynamics. With his usual trademarks of long takes and emphatic use of music, Anderson veers from art house experimentation to old fashioned melodrama to profound philosophical inquiry to kinetic violence and dirty sex. Flawed Film Festival is based on the selected films of P.T. Anderson. The festival was based on the concept of characters with dysfunctional family relationships that lead to addiction, desperation, and isolation due to their separation from their parental figures. flawedfilmfestival.com

SELF ASSEMBLY

APPROACH The future of 3D printing was the topic assigned. I selected articles and photography around the concepts of architecture and the evolution of 3D to 4D printing. I looked into how 4D printed objects would assemble themselves  and function like a strand of DNA and have the ability to transform into any shape and size, and focused on how printed technologies affect design and how we live in the future.

WHAT IS 3D PRINTING? 3D Printing, as the name suggests, is a process wherein a solid three-dimensional object is printed layer by layer from raw material, which could potentially lead to a whole new era in printed manufacturing. The process is also known as additive manufacturing or desktop fabrication. PLASTIC IN 3D PRINTING In terms of raw materials that are put into the printing system to create the 3D objects, there seem to be relatively few limitations on what can be used. Currently, plastics are the most widely used materials in additive manufacturing, and the important ones are listed below: Acrylonitile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) Polylactic Acid (PLA) Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) Polycarbonate (PC) Polylactic Acid (SOFT PLA) METALS USED TO PRINT 3D OBJECTS The Materials Science fraternity will also be very interested in 3D printing for the range of possibilities involving metals. Some of the metals used in 3D printing range from: Steel

Gold

Brass

Copper

Titanium

Silver

Bronze

Aluminium

OTHER MATERIALS USED TO PRINT 3D OBJECTS A wide range of other manufacturing materials can be used for 3D printing that include Polyamide, Alumide, Nylon, Glass-filled Polyamide, Epoxy Resins, Wax, and Photopolymers. Mentioned above, there appears to be few limits on to what these materials can be used for additive manufacturing. Some of the more unusual materials that have been used and can be found to print well as 3D printer materials are detailed below: Chocolate

Glass

Bio-Ink

Medication

Bone Material

Skin

Objet Digital Material Objet Tango Family Hot Glue Full Color Sandstone

08 SLOW DOWN

APPROACH The sign that I found was a handwritten rendition price tag of a bottle of Rey Santo wine at a local super market located in Berkeley California. The sign had three clear levels of information: describing the wine’s background and history; providing simple food pairings; and selling the wine. With these three intentions in mind, I decided to rebrand and reposition the wine as a family owned business, highlighting its background and history, while at the same time giving it a modern look and feel to appeal to the consumers of the local market and thus achieve a higher selling goal.

IN THE MOMENT

APPROACH I chose Will.I.Am’s song Bang Bang. Produced for the Great Gatsby soundtrack. This song is a hybrid of 1920’s flapper style music with a mixture of modern hip-hop and dance. Interpreting it as a satirical story of a man who has been shot down by the woman he loves, I chose a variety of typefaces and visuals to represent the different stages of heartbreaking ache and stupid love: the fun and the sad. The imagery used to create the analogous poster conveyed the feeling of satirical loss and desperation in heartache.

OBJECTIVE A master's thesis project is a year-long exploration of a chosen topic that identifies and aims to provide a viable graphic solution to a specific problem in the world around us. The thesis process involves the identification of a problem and an audience, conducting research, distilling of information, analyzing strategies, and developing a solution through a design approach. MFA THESIS

APPROACH While reading about different natural disasters going on around the world, I found out that four out of five Americans are now unknowingly living in counties that have been declared federal disaster areas. This statistic surprised me and made me wonder how graphic design could help ease the process of disaster preparation for families so that when emergencies arise there are fewer casualties and faster recoveries. To help alleviate this problem I created Prep365, a hub for emergency preparedness that helps remove the obstacles for individuals to prepare for any natural disaster, making them and their families safer when emergencies arise. Prep365 gives families the ability to plan with their loved ones in mind, build personalized kits, and connect with their communities. prep365.org

A

MI

FA MILI A

To my brother, Oscar, who once said to me, “You just got to do it.” Thank you for those inspirational words and those nights where we would "discuss" the importance of communication. TO

MY

TWIN

Adriana, you have been my best friend since Kilgore's class, and since then you have been my partner in crime, you are my twin, you are family and my best friend. We have spent endless hours working, printing, arguing, laughing, and drinking cafecitos. You have inspired me, taught me, and pushed me to be a meticulous

K YOU

designer. You taught me the importance of true small caps and what real coffee is supposed to be. I will never forget everything you have done for me. Thank you for always being there when I needed you! We did it! TO

MY

FRIENDS

To those I have neglected over the past few years. I want to thank each and every one of you for always being there for me no matter how often I disappeared. I want to thank Marbel for helping me make the big leap into my master's, thanks for the love and inspiration. Melissa, for sticking by me throughout all these years and giving me the opportunity fall in love with graphic design. Jason, for being a great business partner and dealing with my annoying design needs. Andrea and Gabi thank you for all the love that you have given me throughout these years. And last but not least, Anna, Adnan, Mehgan and Simi thank you all for always being there for me no matter how much life got in the way. For all those who have survived the Academy, Amal, Jayeeta, Alberto, Lee, Fin, Yu, Andrea, and Xuan. Each of you has inspired me in different ways to be a better designer. Thanks for all the memories. This journey would not have been the same without you. TO

MY

INSTRUCTORS

Thank you to all my professors during this journey, Mary Scott, Phil Hamlett, Hunter Wimmer, Sandra Isla, Tom McNulty, Stan Zienka, Michael Kilgore, Jeremy Stout, David Hake, John Nettleton, and Bob Slote. Each one of you has pushed me to be the designer I am today. Thank you for all the guidance, passion, and inspiration you have given me.
