Letter from the Director As fall settles upon us, the Hui is eagerly anticipating a festive season that celebrates the visual arts in so many unique and creative ways! In August, our gallery will be filled with the colorful creations of over 250 Maui youth who laughed, danced, and imagined their way through a summer of excitement, creativity and culture at Camp Kaluanui. In September & October, the gallery will transition to feature Malama Wao Akua—an exhibition that creatively merges the worlds of art and conservation with artwork that honors Maui Nui’s unique plant and animal species. We hope the community will enjoy the artful representations of native species and learn more about our islands’ incredible watersheds. It has been a pleasure to collaborate with East Maui Watershed Partnership in coordinating this powerful exhibition. Moving into the holiday season of giving, the Hui offers several fantastic opportunities to gather together and support visual arts education. On November 14th at Hotel Wailea, the Hui will host the 9th Annual Hui No‘eau Wailea Food & Wine Celebration, which promises to be a delicious evening featuring Maui’s top chefs and vintners—all gathering in support of the Hui! On December 1st, I invite you to join the Hui ‘ohana at the Kaluanui Estate to celebrate First Night—a special evening of Hui Holidays shopping with pupu, music, one-night only vendors, and other special surprises! By shopping local at First Night (and throughout the months of November & December in our Hui Holidays showcase!), you give back to local artists and the Hui in a meaningful way—while getting your holiday shopping done! The Hui is truly a unique and special place and I am so grateful to all our members and supporters for ensuring the long-term sustainability of our visual arts center. Before the end of every year, the Hui offers an important giving opportunity: the Annual Fund. This fund is vital to sustaining the Hui’s mission of unlocking creativity through exceptional visual arts education and enhancing this endeavor through the preservation of the historical Kaluanui Estate. Open Studios Celebrated Events From March - July, the Hui celebrated two incredible exhibitions that showcased the tremendous variety of talent found in our Hui ‘ohana of artists. The Hui’s 10 x 10 Exhibition challenged artists to create work in any medium within a defined space of 10” by 10”. The Heart of the Hui Exhibition featured the work of the wonderful and highly skilled students and faculty of Hui No‘eau. Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center is thrilled to collaborate with East Maui Watershed Partnership to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the forested upper regions of our islands’ watersheds—and all of Maui Nui’s unique ecosystems! Selected artwork should be successful in sharing knowledge of the watersheds and native species with others in a meaningful way. Our hope is that Maui artists of all ages will explore our watersheds and express the value these species have within our daily life. This exhibition is sure to provide powerful visuals that celebrate Maui’s native plants and animals. Works in any medium are welcome! Lorraine Abernethy is an artist and educator who resides on the Gold Coast and Tweed Shire border. She lives and works from her home/studio, which she shares with her partner and fellow artist Ian Tremewen. As an artist, you have the freedom to paint whatever you wish with a variety of color choices. Imagination is one of your biggest assets and we will be using it in this workshop! Students will work from a still life using different island objects and venture outdoors to paint “plein air” in watercolor on the grounds of the Hui. The class will be looking for a new way of seeing and interpreting a subject. Ian will guide students in the use of color, which will be the main focus of the workshop. Students will learn watercolor techniques, practice drawing/sketching, and take home finished pieces! Cianna Valley

Charles Cohan received his MFA in printmaking from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He has taught workshops at the Rochester Institute of Technology, Pilchuck Glass School, Anderson Ranch Art Center, Pyramid Atlantic, Whanganui Polytechnic in New Zealand, Canberra Glassworks/Megalo Printmakers, and the University of South Australia. He has received research grants from the U.S. Department of State, the Helpmann Foundation, and the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. He currently chairs the printmaking department at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa. charlescohan.com

Cianna Valley was born and raised on Maui. She earned her BFA in printmaking from California College of the Arts and currently lives and works in Oakland, California. Her work has been shown in galleries across the US and resides in various private and public collections, including the Library of Congress. ciannavalley. com

Polyester Plate Lithography #1151

Etching Techniques #1152

This workshop will explore the intersection of 19th century lithographic techniques with 21st century materials and practices through the use of polyester lithography plates. The capacity of this inexpensive printing matrix is a relatively recent addition to the printmaking field, and thus the applications are innovative and provide yet another visual expansion of contemporary printmaking. This class explores a process that bridges aspects of both the hand drawn and the photographically generated image. Prerequisite: prior printmaking experience Tuition: $235 ($295 nonmember) Supply Fee: $75 An additional supply list is posted online at huinoeau.com under the class description.

This class will introduce you to the technique of etching and is perfect for beginners or those with some intaglio experience looking to hone their skills. Students will begin with the basics of line etching using a liquid hard ground resist before focusing on the addition of tones and textures using aquatint and soft ground techniques. Students will learn to prepare sheet copper for use as a print matrix, etch, and finally print a limited edition of their etchings on a press. Professional editioning techniques as well as ways to re-work finished plates will also be addressed. Dalani Tanahy Wai‘anae, Hawai‘i October 17 - 24

Dalani Tanahy is a native of San Diego, California with maternal roots from Waikapu, Maui. A lifelong artist in many media, she was drawn to kapa making over 15 years ago and stayed with it because of its diversity and rareness. Dalani’s favorite kapa to make are the ones people will use, whether a pa‘u to wear for a wedding, a baby’s blanket, or burial kapa, she feels proudest of the kapa that is made for actual use. She is known for making soft and pliable kapa. With kapa education always being at the forefront of her work, she enjoys teaching students about the ingenuity, patience, and artistry of not only Hawaiians, but all of our ancestors who respected and worked with the ‘aina. Dalani’s work was recently featured in Mohala Hou Ke Kapa / Kapa Blossoms Anew, an exhibition at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. kapahawaii.com

Understanding Hawaiian Kapa #1153 Saturday & Sunday, 2 days October 17 & 18 / 9:00 am – 3:00 pm

Join us for this special opportunity to gain hands-on experience with kapa making! After learning about the historic importance and demise of Hawaiian kapa, students will make a shark tooth knife and ohe kapala stamps, beat the kapa using traditional tools and methods, make dyes, learn proper gathering methods and protocols for dye plants, and discover the different types of designs unique to Hawaiian kapa. Tuition: $145 ($181 nonmember) Supply Fee: $50

Advanced Kapa Beating Techniques #1154 Friday & Saturday, 2 days October 23 & 24 / 9:00 am – 3:00 pm

This class will explore some of the different ways that Hawaiians created their kapa. The instructor will bring fermented wauke for the students to use. Students will beat with the fibers intact, then mo‘omo‘o, where the fibers are macerated, and then kalukalu to create a type of kapa lace. If you have your own kua and i‘e kuku you are welcome to bring them, otherwise tools will be provided. Prerequisite: basic kapa making Tuition: $145 ($181 nonmember) Supply Fee: $25

Barbara Elam is a Professor Emeritus of Art at Rockford College and DePauw University. In 1989, she received the honor of Bunting Institute Fellow of Radcliffe College at Harvard University where she was an artist in residence. Her work has been included in over 250 national and a few international exhibits. He is a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising and The Academy of Art University. He worked as a Fashion Stylist at Macy’s San Francisco and was the owner and Creative Director of Wallop Design Group, a graphic design and branding company. He currently is able to pursue his passion as a jewelry artist and instructor and teaches metal clay workshops in the San Francisco Bay Area and internationally. Students will learn to use the more advanced tools found in the Hui’s studio, improve soldering skills, and refine designs for faster and more successful fabrication. The class may also explore riveting methods, how to imprint surface textures with the rolling mill, and how to create dimension with dapping tools, smithing stakes, and special mandrels. Many other techniques will be learned as students troubleshoot designs and work on individual projects. Jewelry Designer’s Studio: Metalsmithing Rocks! (Ages 12+) #1226

Have you ever wanted to give printmaking a try? This is your chance! In this beginner’s class, students will learn the fundamental techniques of relief printmaking. Students will use both carving and non-carving forms of relief printmaking, utilizing many different traditional and non-traditional materials and tools. The course will primarily use wood blocks, which are readily available. Proper inking, printing, and press setup will be thoroughly covered. This class will introduce students to B&W photography and the silver-gelatin process used in shooting, developing, and printing from black and white film. Students will learn the principles of composition using 35mm and toy film cameras, how to set up chemical baths to temperature, load their exposed film onto reels, and develop film by hand. Participants will also learn the process of printing in the darkroom and creating contact sheets and will walk away with a series of prints! We will explore topics such as advanced darkroom techniques, print toning, hand-coloring, photograms, handmade developers, cyanotype and van dyke brown printing on paper and silk, chromoskedasic printing, and more! Teen Monotype Printmaking Intensive (Age 12+) #1229 Visiting Artist Cianna Valley Friday, October 9 / 9:00 am – 4:00 pm In just one day, students will learn several techniques for pulling beautiful one-of–a-kind prints from Plexiglas plates. Monotype is a fun, forgiving, and incredibly versatile medium that allows you plenty of room for experimentation with color and texture. Participants will learn methods of direct painting, additive and reductive inking, chine collé, and stenciling using a wide variety of materials and tools. At the end of the workshop, each student will leave with several finished works of art. This class is ideal for those with little to no art experience looking to have a creative and fun experience, but is also great for more skilled students interested in learning new techniques. Tiny Hands (Age 2.5 – 5)

Camp Kaluanui offers a diverse, visual arts curriculum geared to stretch minds, exercise imaginations, keep the body active, and introduce new idea-generating techniques. Surrounded by the beauty of the Hui’s historical Kaluanui Estate, campers paint, build, design, dance, sing, and play their way through a balanced variety of artistic activities each day. Make sure to bring plenty of snacks, an energizing lunch, a refillable water bottle, closed-toed shoes, and clothes that can get artsy. PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED! Students enrolling on the day that class begins will be assessed a $20 LATE REGISTRATION FEE, so be sure to enroll early.

Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit visual arts education organization located in beautiful Upcountry Maui. Since 1934, Hui No‘eau has provided an accessible space for the community to experience and enjoy the visual arts.
