letter from the director

‘Tis the season for another wonderful array of classes, exhibitions, events, and more at Hui No‘eau! We are particularly excited to bring Artist in Residence James Bailey to the Hui this October for “Big Ink.” (pgs. 5 & 6). This residency will culminate with a free community celebration on Saturday, October 8th, where Bailey will use an unlikely printing press (a steamroller!) to create prints using plates made by local artists, students, and community members! This unique and dramatic printing method allows participants of all ages and artistic abilities to work together to create prints of many sizes, including some as large as 4’ x 8’! I hope you will join us for this exciting celebration of community visual arts at the historic Kaluanui Estate!

On Friday, November 18th at Hotel Wailea, the Hui will combine Maui’s finest in taste—food, wine, and art—at our 10th Annual Hui No‘eau Wailea Food & Wine Celebration (pg. 4). This is an elegant evening of exquisite cuisine with samples by some of Maui’s top chefs and fine wines by nationally acclaimed vintners. Best of all, 100% of proceeds from ticket sales and silent auction sales benefit community visual arts education and Open Studio programs at Hui No‘eau! I also invite you to join us for First Night—a special evening of Hui Holidays shopping (pg. 4) with pupu, music, onenight only vendors, and other special surprises, including the unveiling of the Hui’s famous paper dress! You will master the season of giving with holiday purchases that not only benefit your friends and family, but also support local artists and community visual arts education at the Hui. These are gifts that truly keep on giving! Lastly, I would like to thank all of you for your steadfast support of Hui No‘eau and our beautiful Kaluanui Estate. Kaluanui was built in 1917 and the home has represented the roots of Hui No‘eau since Ethel Baldwin established the Hui in 1934. What started as a small group of passionate artists has grown to a family of over 39,000 annual participants who realize the benefits of community visual arts education. I am honored to be a part of this growing family as we celebrate 100 years of Kaluanui in 2017! Please stay tuned for more information about upcoming centennial themed events and opportunities to honor 100 years of Kaluanui! Mahalo nui loa,

Malama Wao Akua (Caring for the Realm of the Gods) is a juried art exhibition celebrating the native species of Maui Nui (Maui, Lana‘i, Moloka‘i, Kaho‘olawe). Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center is thrilled to collaborate with East Maui Watershed Partnership to raise awareness about the importance of protecting native species and the forested upper regions of our islands’ watersheds. Selected artwork should be successful in sharing knowledge of the watersheds and native species with others in a meaningful way. Artwork will also be selected based upon a number of criteria, including originality of concept, creativity, technique, professionalism, and presentation. Our hope is that Maui artists of all ages will explore our watersheds and express the value that native species have within our daily life. This exhibition is sure to provide powerful visuals that celebrate Maui’s native plant and animal life. A jurying team with expertise in both art and conservation will select from among the pool of entries. Works in any medium are welcome!

Woman Makes the Malo Makes the Man: An Exhibition of Kapa by Dalani Tanahy July 8 – September 16

In Hawai‘i, the Polynesian introduced paper mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera) or wauke was the preferred plant for making kapa for cloth-like items. In this exhibition located in the Hui’s “history room,” artist Dalani Tanahy presents a stunning showcase of her recent kapa work. A practitioner for over 20 years, Dalani is a grower of the wauke trees and dye plants, a craftswoman who creates the tools she needs to pound and print kapa and dyes, and a researcher, reader, and doer who has learned to understand the nuances of kapa. Dalani is also a valued Hui Visiting Artist and kumu, helping others to learn and ensure the survival of kapa making.

hui spotlight Meet 2016 Artist in Residence James Bailey!

What inspires you most in your own creative work? Lately it has been the landscape and systems. My work examines the landscape and our relation to it via the concept of maps/mapping as both objects and as acts. Specifically, what are the systems and conventions of depicting/charting/categorizing and interpreting our environment and experiences? As a printmaker, I love the physical quality of cutting and developing blocks, the smell of the ink and the mechanics of printing. Why steamroller prints? What makes them so interesting & unique? Working at such a large scale really challenges how you approach the work. You think differently about design, detail, and how you cut. The scale of the work, wherein you are creating something physically larger than yourself really gets you to use your entire body as you are literally crawling across your block as you work it and later as you print the work. The final print has a visual impact that’s really engaging as well. And finally it’s being able to print with a steamroller, which is a large noisy machine applying thousands of pounds of pressure in the name of art. It’s great.

Experience “BIG Ink!” 4 Fun Ways to Participate:

1 TAKE A CLASS – See pages 5 and 16 for some great class options open to all levels! 2 MAKE A PRINT – Calling all artists! Create drawings, carve on large-scale (up to 4’ x 8’) linoleum or wood and our whole community will watch your work being printed! Contact Program Manager Lana Coryell at lanac@huinoeau.com if you would like to participate!

What can artists and members of our community look forward to experiencing in October? One of my favorite parts about organizing steamroller projects is the collaboration that goes on. From people helping each other—moving blocks or working collaboratively to cut a block—to the main event, where scores of people come together to make something really significant happen. The printing really takes on a wonderful performance quality with individuals working together inking, carrying blocks, laying down fabric in a crazy cyclical dance.

3 VOLUNTEER – Let us know if you’d like to help with “Big Ink” Celebration on October 8! Contact Program Manager Lana Coryell at lanac@huinoeau.com if you would like to help.

4 WATCH & SEE – Everyone is invited! Come by the Hui on October 8 to see some amazing prints being steamrolled before your eyes!

The Business of Art #1422

The Expanded Monoprint #1423

When it comes to the business of selling art, artists need marketing skills in addition to talent! Now, more than ever, making money from your art requires a basic knowledge of business fundamentals. This one-day workshop will include topics such as pricing products for profit, the pros and cons of being your own boss, copyright basics, branding, focusing on galleries/gift shops, fool-proof presentations, internet marketing, and much more. Tuition: $80 ($100 nonmember)

This course will explore contemporary directions in monoprint and monotype printing—a painterly printmaking process in which no two prints are created exactly the same. Through the process of layering, students will develop their very own narrative documentary project. Visiting Artist Charles Cohan will walk students through a variety of methods including additive and reductive practices, stencil printing, and polyester and paper plate lithography. Participants will learn multiple layer inking techniques and participate in the production of sequential and variant editions. This workshop presents a unique opportunity for students to investigate a current issue of personal concern and to create a folio of informational and visual references on that theme. Upon registration, students will be presented with an assignment to help them get ready for class. This workshop is open to all levels; the complete beginner and the more advanced student will both enjoy this workshop! Tuition: $215 ($269 nonmember) Supply Fee: $75 An additional list of supplies is posted online at huinoeau.com under the class description.

Yet our photographs can exercise a certain tyranny over us, leading us to copy them, rather than to create works of art inspired by them. In this workshop, students will explore the challenges of painting from photos. Visiting Artist Roger Whitlock will focus on guiding students through the painting of landscapes, cityscapes, or street scenes. The instructor will supply photographs; students are also invited to bring their own. Prerequisite: Intermediate Watercolor or equivalent experience Tuition: $155 ($194 nonmember) A list of supplies is posted online at huinoeau.com under the class description.

printmaking Large-scale Linocut: Prepare for “Big Ink!” #1464

Printmaking 101: What is it all about?? Printmaking is an incredible way of making marks, layering colors, and creating multiple prints of an image! Ink is applied and paper is pressed onto the plate either by hand or using a printing press. The finished print is pulled from the plate, revealing a magical and stunning impression! EARLY REGISTRATION DISCOUNT!

Register for any Fall 2016 session class by September 15 and receive 10% off class tuition!

Note: Pre-registration is required for all Hui classes. Full payment is required at the time of registration. To ensure enrollment in a class, we recommend registering at least one week prior to the start date of class. Some classes do not qualify for the EARLY REGISTRATION discount. We require seven days notice to issue a refund or class credit less a $25 processing fee. Memberships are non-refundable. If the person registering has a disability and needs accommodation to be able to fully participate in a class, the Hui should be alerted at the time of registration (at least one week in advance of class start date) to discuss any accommodations needed.
