Letter from the Director At Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center, we are proud to bring you many exciting opportunities to enrich your life through the visual arts in 2016! The New Year begins with over 100 classes & workshops in painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, jewelry & metalsmithing, photography, mixed media, glassblowing—and with the launch of our new “Art with Aloha” Program (pg. 14)—Hawaiian fiber art! The Hui will also host 11 incredible visiting artists from the outer islands and both coasts of the United States. We are thrilled to bring these talented, world-class artists and educators to Maui to share new skills and techniques with you! The Hui offers great learning opportunities for your keiki, too! We believe that creativity and self-expression are two of the most important gifts you can give your children. By enrolling your keiki in art classes or participating together in our family programs, you prepare your children for success; the ability to innovate and think creatively are some of the most valued skills in higher education and the professional world—not to mention, art is fun and healthy for mind and body! Tiny Hands, Family Friday Workshops, afterschool programs, and teen classes (pgs. 23-26) are all fantastic opportunities to nurture your child’s creative spirit. Although the holidays bring attention to gift giving, we know that shopping and giving happen all year long. When you shop handmade at the Hui, you’ll find one-of-a-kind, handcrafted items fabricated right here on Maui by local artisans. Every purchase from the Hui’s Gallery Shop at Kaluanui supports the artist & the Hui—and your loved one will surely enjoy your unique present! Open to the public seven days a week, the Hui’s fine art gallery provides a great opportunity to view works of art created by the talented members of our Maui arts ‘ohana. In January and February, the gallery will transition from our whimsical and festive Hui Holidays display to the Hui’s Annual Juried Exhibition—our most prestigious exhibition of the year. I encourage artists working in any medium to enter this open call exhibition and can’t wait to see what you all have in store for us! I am so grateful to all of our members and supporters for helping us in our mission of unlocking creativity through exceptional visual arts education and enhancing this endeavor through the preservation of the historic Kaluanui Estate. Spotlight on Giving Ernest Rezents cares for Kaluanui’s Trees! This summer, Hui No‘eau was fortunate enough to welcome Ernest “Ernie” Rezents back to the Hui to help guide us in continuing to maintain and preserve over 70 botanical specimens at Kaluanui Estate. Professor Emeritus of Agriculture at University of Hawai‘i Maui College, International Society of Aboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist, and American Society of Consulting Arborists (ASCA) Registered Consulting Arborist, Ernie really knows his trees! “Trees are like people,” he says. “They need space, water, air, and minerals. They mature, reproduce, become injured or sick, and will eventually die. My philosophy is: treat trees as you want to be treated; they will reward you with benefits you could not find elsewhere.” Ernie was recently awarded the ISA’s True Professional of Arboriculture Award recognizing deserving arborists, their best practices, and the successes they have had in educating their communities, clients, colleagues, and employees. Ernie was one of only three recipients of this prestigious award. The Hui would like to thank Ernie for his recent donation of services to maintain and preserve the many incredible tree specimens at the Kaluanui Estate. We are truly grateful to Ernie for his passion towards the trees, his commitment to Hui No‘eau and Kaluanui Estate, and for his service to our community and the world. Members are the heartbeat of Hui No‘eau! Celebrated Events Malama Wao Akua Exhibition Opening

On Friday, September 4, more than 500 artists, conservationists, art supporters, and families gathered to celebrate the opening of the Malama Wao Akua Exhibition. A collaboration between Hui Noâ&#x20AC;&#x2DC;eau Visual Arts Center and East Maui Watershed Partnership, the exhibition featured artwork by 93 local artists and depicted 60 unique plant and animal species native to the islands of Maui Nui. The enchanting evening celebration began with a blessing by Kumu Gordean Bailey and continued with magical performances by Halau Wehiwehi O Leileihua. On a perfect night at the historic Kaluanui Estate, the Maui community joined together to share their respect and appreciation for artists and the island environment that we call home. Framed by majestic skies, the historic home of Kaluanui overflowed with uplifting, positive energy that warmed the hearts of everyone in attendance! The Hui sends our deepest appreciation to Aloha Recycling, Inc. for sponsoring this incredible exhibition. We also thank the many community supporters who donated provisions, prizes, and services to help make the exhibition a tremendous success!

2016 Hui No‘eau Annual Juried Exhibition

January 8 – February 18 Receiving Day: Monday, December 28 / 9:00 am – 4:00 pm Opening Reception: Friday, January 8 / 5:00 – 7:00 pm Juror: Marcia Morse This prestigious and selective exhibition offers an opportunity for viewers to see current work of local and mainland artists in all media, including ceramics, printmaking, sculpture, photography, jewelry, digital imagery, fiber, painting, glass, and wood. In 2016, Juror Marcia Morse brings her strong educational and artistic background to the Hui. Ms. Morse completed her undergraduate work with honors at Harvard University and received her MFA in Printmaking at Stanford University. She recently completed her PhD in Political Science with research focused on the gender politics of performance art. She is tenured as a Professor of Art at Honolulu Community College, where she currently serves as Dean of University College, the Liberal Arts program of the College. Ms. Morse is also active as an artist, art critic and freelance curator.

With an open call to artists working in any medium, the Hui’s annual juried themed exhibition adopts an adventurous spirit in 2016 as we explore the concept of “Voyaging”—going on a long journey in the spirit of exploration. We encourage artists to think broadly about what it means to move through space, transition, wander, and pass from one place to the next. Grounded in a rich tradition in Hawai‘i, this theme will take on a new meaning through artists’ interpretations—inviting cultural, personal, and visual discoveries along the way.

The Solo Artist Exhibition is one of the only exhibitions in the State of Hawai‘i that provides the unique opportunity for artists to be personally involved in all facets of exhibition planning and installation and it challenges artists to envision and produce an innovative and cohesive body of work. The Hui’s gallery is divided to accommodate two simultaneous exhibitions, cultivating an energetic conversation between both artists and spaces. This exhibition has advanced careers, spurred community dialogue, and continues to define our local visual arts movement. This year, the Hui invites two exceptional artists to tell their stories; Melissa Chimera will present “Agents of Change”—a series of mixed media works on linen about extinction, globalization, and our role as humans in these processes. Chimera juxtaposes the catastrophic implications of the subject matter with a method firmly grounded in formal elements of painting combined with the treatment of linen as a textile. Gabrielle Anderman will present “Being Here,” which explores her relationship to the present. In particular, Anderman is interested in the ways in which her mind keeps her distracted, preventing her from experiencing the present moment. Hui Visiting Artist Teaches at Baldwin High School!

In 2015, Hui’s Visiting Artist Program brought Yale University School of Art Professor Johannes DeYoung to Maui to teach a series of workshops at Hui No‘eau and Baldwin High School. DeYoung taught workshops in animation, drawing, and design to 20 students in Baldwin High School’s Academy of Informational Technology (AIOT) and Digital Media Directed Studies Program led by teacher Trisha Roy. “Having Johannes was inspiring and fun for our students,” Roy said. “This was a new experience for all of us and it was such a great opportunity to learn from someone with so much knowledge and passion.” Mahalo to Art Affair 2015 guests and to the Mary Lou and Robert J. Koichi Yamamoto was born in Osaka, Japan. He received his BFA at the Pacific Northwest College of Art and then moved to Krakow, Poland to produce works and study copper engravings at the Bratislava Academy of Fine Arts in the Slovak Republic. He studied in the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan, Poland and then completed his MFA at the University of Alberta, Canada. He also worked as a textile designer in Fredericia, Denmark. Koichi’s prints explore issues of the sublime, memory, and atmosphere. He has exhibited internationally. Margot B. Myers

Bellingham, Washington February 5 – 7 Margot B. Myers makes visual work that reflects her relationship with the natural world and is influenced by the rural landscapes where she has lived and worked. She spends summers in her family-operated commercial fish camp on the Nushagak River in Alaska’s Bristol Bay. This formative experience and her curiosity about natural systems are the forces that propel the development of her aesthetic. She uses various media to create work that is characteristically delicate, fluid, vital, and elegant. In addition to making works on paper, Margot creates installations that incorporate textiles, ceramics, papers, film, and site-specific drawings on diverse materials. She earned BAs in Art and Spanish from Walla Walla College and an MFA in Printmaking from New Mexico State University. Gahl Shottan has over ten years of experience as an educator working with people of all ages in farms, gardens, and outdoor spaces. She currently serves as an Outreach Coordinator for NYCParks Department GreenThumb program, the largest community garden program in the nation. She received a Masters of Science in City and Regional Planning at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Gahl believes that practical knowledge of natural spaces can easily be combined with a love of art and design.

Dorothy Cochran is an accomplished printmaker who pushes the boundaries of how to create works on paper. With many years of experience as an artist, educator, and curator, she has developed innovative ways to work and layer substrates, creating prints of luminous quality. She is acknowledged for her expertise and broad command of multiple print methods. A two-time recipient of a NJ State Council on the Arts fellowship, she has taught at Columbia University, City University of New York, and Manhattan Graphics Center. She is currently a faculty member at The Montclair Art Museum. Her work is represented in both private and public art collections throughout the United States, including The New York Public Library, Prudential Life Insurance, Valley Hospital and the Zimmerli Museum of Rutgers University. Recent exhibitions include the Center for Contemporary Printmaking in Norwalk, CT; the Art Museum of Southwest University, MN; and Franklin54 Gallery in New York, NY. She is a popular lecturer and workshop leader with a dedicated following. She has been a featured presenter at the International Encaustic Conference in Provincetown, MA exhibiting at A Gallery and The Schoolhouse Gallery. Dorothy earned an MFA from Columbia University and an MA & BA from Montclair State University.

Solar Plate Etching #1244 Saturday – Monday, 3 days February 20 – 22 / 10:00 am – 4:00 pm Working with solar plates is a safe and environmentally friendly approach to creating traditional etchings without the use of grounds, acids, or solvents. The plates are exposed to UV light and developed with ordinary tap water. Direct drawing, photographic, and digital approaches are just a few of the possible imaging methods. Once created, etched solar plates can be printed as intaglio or relief prints with non-toxic water wash inks. Further explorations will include inking strategies such as chine collé, multiple plate layering, and color wiping. This exciting process has many applications, is easily learned, and appeals to artists, printmakers, and photographers alike. Brendan McBryan earned a BS in Industrial Design from Georgia Institute of Technology and has expert level knowledge of Adobe production software, having worked in the design and print production industry for fifteen years. He has designed, created, and produced a variety of materials, including book length documents, logos, way-finding signage, flyers, websites, technical drawings, and identity elements.

Charles Cohan received his MFA in printmaking from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He has taught workshops at the Rochester Institute of Technology, Pilchuck Glass School, Anderson Ranch Art Center, Pyramid Atlantic, Whanganui Polytechnic in New Zealand, Canberra Glassworks/Megalo Printmakers, and the University of South Australia. Keiko Tanabe was born in Kyoto, Japan and currently lives in San Diego, California. She embarked on a professional art career as a watercolor painter in 2005 after working in international relations. Dalani Tanahy is a native of San Diego, California with maternal roots from Waikapu, Maui. Dalani’s favorite kapa to make are the ones people will use, whether a pa‘u to wear for a wedding, a baby’s blanket, or burial kapa. She is known for making soft and pliable kapa. Join us for a creative and therapeutic art session that aims to wake up creativity and help you get out of your own way as you experience authentic creative expression. Absolutely no artistic experience is required, although spontaneous painting is a great way to help generate a feeling of freedom in those students with a more artistic background. Participants will be given encouragement and guidelines to promote easy painting from the heart, not the head. Students will stand up and paint, choosing whatever colors speak to them and paint freely in a supportive environment where there are no rights or wrongs. Expressing yourself is a natural part of the creative process. By suspending judgments and allowing yourself to play, you will be turning off the intellect and allowing your heart to open up and guide you. Glassblowing Blow Your Own: Make A Keepsake! This class utilizes photographic techniques from the 1800s while incorporating modern tools. Salt prints use the chemical reaction between sodium chloride (salt) and silver nitrate to produce a photosensitive solution. When exposed to UV light, this combination can produce a photographic image. The class will use modern techniques to create (digital) negatives from both digital and/or analogue film. This process produces rich dark brown tones with the option of toning the prints to extend the permanence and change the tone from brown to a dark purple-like hue. In this introductory class, students will create their own functional art as they explore the handling of clay using wheel throwing, handbuilding, Teens will learn the basic skills they need to start designing their very own professional glazing, and texturing techniques. Students will enjoy this muddy, messy, and fun art form! quality metal creations, including jewelry and small sculpture! While working on their own projects, students will practice the foundational elements of metalsmithing that all jewelry professionals know: cutting, drilling, piercing, and soldering metal. Projects include pendants, bracelets, earrings, rings, and small sculpture. You’ll be amazed by your very own jewelry creations! Note: Before participating in this guided studio session, students must take a 4-hour Introduction to Teen Jewelry & Metalsmithing class. Students will quickly improve valuable fine art skills by learning and practicing painting and drawing fundamentals. Students will work with a variety of media, including pencil, charcoal, pastels, and acrylic paint. This class will improve self-esteem and technical skills while encouraging creative self-expression. Teen Camp Kaluanui: Spring Break! (Ages 12+) #1324 Roberta Ann Weisenburg, Michael Javalde and Gwen Arkin Monday – Friday, 5 days March 21 – 25 / 9:00 am – 4:00 pm Explore three different art media in this creative and fun spring break intensive! All art classes take place in the Hui’s professionally equipped studios. In the mornings, students will learn the art of printmaking or photography. After lunch, teens will learn to saw, cut, hammer, and solder in the jewelry and metalsmithing studio. Spring break is the perfect opportunity to try something new, get creative, and have fun with friends. Teens walk away with amazing works of art that they created themselves! After learning the stories and talking about the illustrations, children and an accompanying adult guardian will explore other imagery by painting with tempera and watercolors, sculpting with air-dry clay, and drawing with colored pencils, markers, and oil pastels. Explore a new form of artistic expression through the theatrical arts! In this class, students will learn the basics of theatrical design and exploration. By the end of the course, students will create scenic, costume and makeup design based on their interpretation of a provided dramatic text. By tapping into a creative outlet that combines visual and performing arts, students will think critically to make theatrical worlds and bring their imaginations to life. Explorations in Wire Working: Jewelry & Beyond! (Ages 7 – 12) #1311 Katie Peterson Wednesdays, 4 weeks April 6 – 27 / 3:00 – 5:00 pm Students will learn a broad range of wire working and wrapping techniques while using a variety of tools to create beautiful, wearable pieces of art (earrings, pendants, rings) and small sculptures! Wire-wrapping is an inexpensive hobby, perfect for making unique gifts and keepsakes. Bring along your favorite shells, sea glass, and other found objects. You’ll be amazed at what you can create! In this class, students will learn about the collograph—a fun and versatile type of print—and will create their own printing blocks in a variety of sizes! Blocks can be used to create personalized greeting cards, wrapping paper, or even a series of artistic prints to frame. Students will leave with durable blocks that can be used at home for years to come. The sky is the limit! What will YOU create?

Still simply dipping your eggs? We’ve got just the workshop for you! In this class, parents and children will explore fun, new techniques to turn eggs into beautiful, tiny works of art. Chose from a variety of decorating stations, or try them all! You might even start a new family tradition! Six hardboiled and six artificial eggs will be provided per child. This class is just in time for making a beautiful handmade Mother’s Day gift! In this workshop, each student will create a beautiful silk scarf using a 19th century photography process, three-dimentional objects, and sunlight. Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit visual arts education organization located in beautiful Upcountry Maui. Since 1934, Hui No‘eau has provided an accessible space for the community to experience and enjoy the visual arts. Throughout the year, the Hui hosts art classes for adults and children, artist lectures, fine art exhibitions, events, tours, and educational outreach programs. Note: Pre-registration is required for all Hui classes. Full payment is required at the time of registration. To ensure enrollment in a class, we recommend registering at least one week prior to the start date of class. We require seven days notice to issue a refund or class credit less a $25 processing fee. Memberships are non-refundable. If the person registering has a disability and needs accommodation to be able to fully participate in a class, the Hui should be alerted at the time of registration (at least one week in advance of class start date) to discuss any accommodations needed.
