Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit visual arts education organization located in beautiful Upcountry Maui. Since 1934, Hui No‘eau has provided an accessible space for the community to experience and enjoy the visual arts. Throughout the year, the Hui hosts art classes for adults and children, artist lectures, fine art exhibitions, events, tours, and educational outreach programs. Working artist studios are nestled across the grounds and a gallery shop featuring artwork created by Hui members is located in the main house. As a communitybased organization, we thank you for helping us continue our mission of unlocking creativity through exceptional visual arts education and enhancing this endeavor through the preservation of the historic Kaluanui Estate.
Summer is one of our favorite times of year at the Hui! We are excited to welcome over 250 eager and creative Maui youth to participate in our Summer Camp Kaluanui (page 21 & 21). Our talented team of Teaching Artists provides students with tools to explore their creativity in nine uniquely themed weeks of camp. Each of these themes ensures that students have an opportunity to create artwork based on their personal interests. We can’t wait to see all of the fabulous and diverse work created by these talented young artists!
I am thrilled to announce some of the exciting details for our Kaluanui Centennial Festival & Family Day (page 2)! This free, family friendly event will take place on Saturday, July 22nd from 10am – 2pm at the beautiful Kaluanui Estate. We look forward to celebrating with you! Our annual juried themed exhibition also celebrates 100 years of Kaluanui this year with a special Centennial 10 x 10 Exhibition (page 5). This exhibition challenges artists to use their imaginations to create 2D and 3D works in any medium within a defined space of 10”x10”x10”. In honor of Kaluanui’s centennial year, one hundred pieces will be selected for display. This issue of Create features over 80 classes and workshops for youth and adults, including 14 classes and demonstrations taught by 10 Visiting Artists—a program that gained vital support and momentum at this year’s Art Affair 2017 thanks to our many generous donors and community supporters.

celebrating 100 years in 2017!
When C.W. Dickey designed the historic Kaluanui Estate in 1917 for its original owners Harry & Ethel Baldwin, he was one of the most celebrated architects of his time. Now, 100 years later, the Kaluanui Estate still stands in its originals character as one of Maui’s most iconic legacy estates still open to the public. With the unending generosity of our community, Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center has succeeded in preserving Kaluanui so that it will remain accessible for future generations of artists, students, educators, and community members for years to come. We thank each and every one of you for your continued support and invite you to share our excitement in celebrating the Kaluanui Estate now and for another 100 years!

Retrospective: Judy Bisgard
Youth Art Exhibition
March 10 – May 6
The Hui’s Retrospective Series was designed to acknowledge the contributions of individuals who have made a profound influence on local art and to share their work and ideas with the community. In honor of her contributions to Maui’s visual arts community and for her commitment to Hui No‘eau and its 100-year-old Kaluanui Estate, the Hui celebrates Maui artist Judy Bisgard in 2017. Born and raised on Maui, Bisgard attended Mills College in California where she received a degree in History with a minor in Fine Arts. She has worked in the arts for over 40 years, volunteering as a board member at museums and nonprofit organizations, such as Hui No‘eau and the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. Bisgard’s inspirations are drawn from local Maui flora, the fast changing environment, and the decline of pineapple and plantation houses, while incorporating the color and compositional techniques of the French Impressionists. This retrospective exhibition showcases Bisgard’s experiences with a wide range of media, including plein air paintings, fiber, encaustic, pastel, intaglio, and woodcut.

September 15 – November 9 Receiving Day: August 30 Opening Reception: September 15 / 5:00 – 8:00 pm Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center in collaboration with East Maui Watershed Partnership (EMWP) brings you Malama Wao Akua (Caring for the Realm of the Gods)—a juried art exhibition celebrating the native species of Maui Nui (Maui, Lana‘i, Moloka‘i, Kaho‘olawe). We invite Maui artists to explore our watersheds and use their creative talents to raise awareness about the importance of protecting native species. Selected artwork should be successful in sharing knowledge of the watersheds and native species with others in a meaningful way. Artwork will also be selected based upon a number of criteria, including originality of concept, creativity, technique, professionalism, and presentation. Our hope is that Maui artists of all ages will explore our watersheds and express the value that native species have in our daily lives. This exhibition is sure to provide powerful visuals that celebrate Maui’s native plant and animal life. A jurying team with expertise in both art and conservation will select from among the entries. Works in any medium are welcome!

Glass on Metal: An Introduction to Enameling Thursday & Friday, 2 days June 1 & 2 / 9:00 am – 3:00 pm
Forging Intensive for Jewelers Tuesdays, 3 weeks June 6 - 20 / 5:00 – 9:00 pm
All levels will enjoy learning how to forge unique and expressive earrings, pins, pendants and rings quickly and without the need for solder or complicated joining techniques. From “skill builder” exercises in copper to exquisite finished jewelry in silver, students will learn all aspects of forging in this up-beat and fun workshop. With individualized instruction, this workshop is appropriate for everyone— from beginners to experts! Prerequisite: Beginning Jewelry or equivalent experience is recommended. Tuition: $155 ($194 nonmember) Supply Fee: TBD in studio based on individual needs A supply list is posted online at huinoeau.com under the class description.
Add some excitement to your jewelry and experience the colorful possibilities that enamels have to offer! In this workshop, you will learn the basic techniques and principles of enameling, including proper preparation and firing methods to assure color quality and clarity. Enamels offer so many possibilities to create unique patterns of color: sifting opaque and transparent layers of color, using under glazes, enamel threads, and foils. If you have previously attended Andrea’s workshops, more advanced instruction (i.e. cloisonné and plique a jour) may be arranged. Prerequisite: Basic jewelry experience (drilling, piercing and filing) is recommended. Tuition: $155 ($194 nonmember) Supply Fee: $20 A supply list is posted online at huinoeau.com under the class description.
Sandcasting for Jewelers Sunday & Monday, 2 days June 4 & 5 / 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
In this class, you will learn a simple casting method to create jewelry and small sculpture. Unlike most other casting methods, sandcasting is fast (often requiring less than an hour from idea to completion) and because it does not result in the loss of the original wax model, it is ideal for producing multiples. Sandcasting also requires little in the way of specialized equipment, making it an ideal addition to any small studio or home-based workshop. In fact, most of the necessary tools can be made DIY in the studio (as you will see!). Experienced metalsmiths will discover an array of variations and innovations to inform their work, while less experienced makers will discover a unique, low-tech method for producing jewelry and small objects in silver, bronze, pewter and even aluminum. Prerequisite: Beginning Jewelry or equivalent experience is recommended. Tuition: $155 ($194 nonmember) Supply Fee: $25 A supply list is posted online at huinoeau.com under the class description.
Visiting Artists David & Andrea Peterson will also teach a special program for Hui teens and tweens. See page 22!

DALANI TANAHY
KELLY FOSS
Dalani Tanahy is a native of San Diego, California with maternal roots from Waikapu, Maui. A lifelong artist in many media, she was drawn to kapa making over 15 years ago and stayed with it because of its diversity and rareness. Dalani’s favorite kapa to make are the ones people will use, whether a pa‘u to wear for a wedding, a baby’s blanket, or burial kapa. She is known for making soft and pliable kapa. With kapa education always being at the forefront of her work, she enjoys teaching students about the ingenuity, patience, and artistry of not only Hawaiians, but all of our ancestors who respected and worked with the ‘aina. Dalani’s work was recently featured Mohala Hou Ke Kapa / Kapa Blossoms Anew—an exhibition at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. kapahawaii.com
Kelly Foss was born on the coast of Georgia and has lived in New Mexico, Vermont, Texas, Hawai‘i, and New York City, where she now resides. Self-taught for many years, she eventually decided to go “all in” and put a full time focus on learning the skills and tradition of the classical art that she loves at Grand Central Atelier, where she spends eight hours a day drawing and painting the figure! Passionate about portraits, Kelly thrives on the challenge of catching “lightning in a bottle,” the subtleties that flash across faces that reveal personality and character. Her artwork is included in numerous private collections in over seventeen US states as well as in Mexico, Spain, Japan and Australia. kellyfoss.com

Delita Martin received a BFA in drawing from Texas Southern University and an MFA in printmaking from Purdue University. Formally a member of the fine arts faculty at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Delita currently works as a full-time artist in her studio, Black Box Press. Working from oral traditions and vintage and family photographs as a source of inspiration, her work explores the power of the narrative impulse. Delita’s process of layering various printmaking, drawing, sewing, collaging, and painting techniques allow her to create portraits that fuse the real and the fantastic. In her work, she combines signs and symbols to create a visual language. By fusing this visual language with oral storytelling, she offers other identities and other narratives for women of color. Delita’s work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally. Her work was recently included in International Review of African American Art as one of sixteen African American artists to watch who are gaining national and international attention in 2015. blackboxpressstudio.com.

art of giving Mahalo for supporting Hui Visiting Artists & Outreach Programs! With generous support from foundations and private donors like you, creativity is alive and thriving at Hui No‘eau! Beyond the wonderful art classes and workshops taught by local Maui artists, the Hui offers incredible Visiting Artist and outreach programs that support artistic growth for all ages! The Hui is thrilled to host visual artists from outer islands, all across the United States and around the world! Visiting Artists are exceptional educators and artists who teach students of all ages right here at the Hui. Through hands-on classes and demos, Visiting Artists share new techniques and inspire the creativity of our entire community. As part of the live auction at Art Affair 2017, the Hui’s incredible supporters raised their paddles to enable continued growth of this important program! With funds raised this year, Visiting Artists will be able to work with Maui youth and school groups through in-school and “Explore and Discover” field trip programs! Now, more than ever before, Maui school teachers are reaching out to the Hui and asking for our help to provide high quality visual arts experiences for their students. With school funding and time devoted to the arts being cut, the Hui’s Visiting Artist and outreach programs are especially vital! In 2016, the Hui provided engaging art opportunities for students from public high schools like Maui High School, Baldwin High School, and Kihei Charter School as well as other youth groups. The Hui also continues to host over 350 Maui preschoolers each year with support from the Samuel N. and Mary Castle Foundation. For many of these talented young artists, working with Hui Teaching and Visiting Artists on this beautiful historic estate provides a first experience learning a new art medium in an entirely new environment. These programs open students’ minds to new possibilities! Hands-on art experiences also help Maui youth develop creative thinking, problem solving and communication skills that will help them to thrive in school, work, and life! The Hui is extremely grateful for the generous donor support that helps sustain our Visiting Artist and outreach programs!

hui spotlight
The visual arts make a difference in the lives of Maui keiki! According to research published by Americans for the Arts, students who participate in the arts have better grade point averages, score better on standardized tests in reading and math, and have lower dropout rates. In addition, a 2015 report finds that “creativity is among the top 5 applied skills sought by business leaders.” The Hui believes in the power and importance of the visual arts, but we thought we would let the kids speak for themselves and share how much their experiences at the Hui mean to them:
weddings & events
“Art camp is awesome because the teachers are super nice and we get to make a lot of cool stuff. I even got to make a rocket one day!” – Noah Benander, Age 7 “I loved making all the beautiful things.” – Morgan Benander, Age 5
Weddings & Events: Create Memories at the Hui! “I feel that, as a kid, art is a great way to express myself, and I think it is super important to be creative and not like everyone else. The Hui definitely offers a bunch of options in all kinds of art, which has given me more opportunities to explore different varieties of art. I also feel that whenever I go to the Hui, I am going to find people working there and going there who are just as enthusiastic about art as I am.” – Sophia Gallegos, Age 12 “The Hui inspired me in art, and it made me good at it. When you’re there you get to make so many fun things, all the teachers are super fun to learn with. I like that the Hui doesn’t just teach one kind of art. All the teachers are so different and all their skills are super cool. The art you can make there is abstract, realistic, or you can make it up, it depends on what teacher you have. There is really no limit. You won’t just make art, you can make jewelry, dioramas, houses in nature, and more. I have gone to the Hui since I was five and I have never brought home the same thing twice, and now I’m 11 and still like to go. The way the Hui is built is really good for learning.” – Thi Mevis-Teuber, Age 11 Learn more about the Hui’s summer youth and family art programs on pages 20 - 23!

Give a Gift Beyond Your Years
Hui No‘eau is honored to be one of 100 nonprofits selected by Hawai‘i Community Foundation as a partner in their Legacy Giving Campaign. The campaign is a statewide effort to enhance awareness of legacy giving. What is your passion? If the Hui’s educational offerings and/or efforts in historic preservation reflect your values, please consider setting aside a gift in your will or trust. In addition to supporting our work through your generous cash donations, here are just a few ways you can contribute to the sustainability of Hui No‘eau for future generations. We encourage you to consult with your financial advisor to discuss the tax implications of these options: Bequests One of the easiest ways to help involves simply naming Hui No‘eau as a beneficiary in your will and living trust. A bequest may be for a particular dollar amount or percentage of your estate. Estate tax savings may be significant. Life Insurance Policy and Retirement Assets Often overlooked by donors, naming Hui No‘eau as a partial or full beneficiary of these assets can provide support for the organization. Contact the Development Office at 808-572-6560 ext. 25 or email erinw@huinoeau.com if you are interested in making a legacy contribution to Hui No‘eau!
