Final Design In Context

Designer’s note In soft goods class, I have explored the challenges of working on a complex product and problems. Through readings, lectures, discussions, group research, presentations, and project work I learned the process of soft good product design and development. These process allows me to explore the knowledge of soft good and to help my design to be meaningful.

PROBLEM When parents go out, they carry both baby carrier, a purse, a diaper bag, or a booster seat, at the same time. The combination of different product systems becomes a hassle to manage.

Opportunity Matrix Opportunity Area Most booster seat that I found on the market today are focused on the particular set of needs as a booster seat. There is a large area in the market for these booster seat to serve more than one function rather than solely designed for dining purposes.

Handbag Analysis

In order to understand the structure of a bag, my group deconstructed and documented a complex bag, a leather handbag in class. We had a detailed bag analysis include materials, linings, interlinings, findings, stitches, seams, measurements, labeling, accessories and possible construction methods of the handbag.

Study of materials and findings Before I moved on the next stage, the study of a mother bag allowed me to have better understanding about the materials and construction of a mother bag. As a design student who just started learning about soft goods, this mother bag was a bible. It showed me how to distinguish a functional bag and a fashion bag. Some of the most interesting parts of the deconstruction process for me were the use of materials and simple stitching. The mother bag is with different layers and waterproof materials. Inside the bag, the fabric is PVC. This research made me look forward to learn more about constructing a bag with my recently acquired knowledge of how it can be constructed.

Sketch Modeling Initial Sketch model • Miniature Scale • Understanding two- dimensional design • Understanding form and aesthetics

Huiying Tan 41

Stage 1 Mock-ups Full Scale Mock-ups I used tissue paper to create the overall bag. Paper models helped me to create construction steps of the bag and appropriate measurements of the pattern pieces. I also tried to figure out possible seam allowances and grading information so I have a better understand what can be done better with my muslin prototype.

DSID132 Soft good Process book

42

Stage 2 Mock-ups Muslin Prototype Muslin prototype is a very last stage before my final design. This process helped me to finalized the best construction steps for my booster seat design. Small problems I have found from the straps to stable with the chair. I noticed that some chairs were not have a large gap to allow straps go through it. I finally decided to use the longest straps to stable my seat and chair. I was able to practice sewing skills and overall craftsmanship as well. I also tried to figure out the possible seam, the overall bag, SA 1/2 and grading were tested.

The Making Process There were a lot of obstacles I faced that I was not aware of when putting all the pieces together. It was not easy to sew a place where different types of fabric meet together to create a thick layer of fabrics. I made sure every pattern pieces were lined up correctly by using notches on the pattern pieces.

DSID132 Soft good Process book

50

The Making process I begin to make my pattern and figure out some baby gears dimensions.

Huiying Tan 51

The Making Process My first step was to make my base. I bended both sides of acrylic and applied thin foam on the top and inside. The outer foam will provide a comfortable seat for baby and the inter foam will protect baby gear.

DSID132 Soft good Process book

52

The Making Process The next step was to cut out all the fabric and to sew each part. Before I sewed the fabric, I used iron to make my fabric and my binding tape smooth.

Huiying Tan 53

The Making Process After I sewed the part 2 and part 3, I tested my prototypes and made some adjustments. I also sewed my brand on my booster design. I started to sew letters on a piece of leather and then sew the leather on my bag.

DSID132 Soft good Process book

54

The Making Process After sewing all pieces together, the most difficult part was to sew the bottom. I used hand sew to sew the bottom piece first and then I pushed harder on my sewing machine. Finally, my model came out.

Huiying Tan 55

Testing After I finished my model, I took my model to coffee shop for testing. I gladded that my model fit on chair and my friend. DSID132 Soft good Process book

This project was truly helpful in understanding how a lot of processes can be involved in making a professional product, as well as, understanding consumer’s needs. Focusing on details and needs of the buyers is not only providing a good product but also raising up their living standards and bringing meaning into their life. I feel my product is meaningful because I build a connection between a mother and a baby.
