Sunlight Depression

S.A.D S.A.D. stands for seasonal affective disorder. S.A.D. is a mood disorder in which people who have normal mental health throughout most of the year exhibit depressive symptoms at the same time each year, most commonly in the winter. This is due to the lack of sunlight exposure in the colder monthes. People may sleep too much or have little energy.

How light affects mood 1. Sunlight enters through your eyes

24

2. Sunlight regulates our circadiam rhythm through complex pathways

3. Sunlight exposure increases serotonin levels in the body

4. Proper levels of serotonin result in more energy, improved mood, and better sleep at night 25

Light Therapy

LUX

Light therapy is a way to treat seasonal affective disorder (S.A.D) and certain other conditions by exposure to artifical light. During light therapy, you can sit or work near a device called a light therapy lamp.

Lux is a measure of the intensity of light as seen by the human eye. One “ lux is one lumen per square meter. And to put that in perspective, a typical office hallway would measure 80 lux, while direct sunlight on a bright day can measure 100,000 lux.

Download and install the App.

Put on the watch and pair it with your mobile device.

Install 10,000+ lux smart light bulbs in desired locations and pair with your device.

Design Direction Auto Light Therapy

We choose this direction because light therapy directly combats the source of seasonal affective disorder and there are some opportunties to improve the treatment.

Wearable acts as a remote and provides more accessible notifications.

40

Light therapy will automatically run in the background without disrupting the user’s daily activities.

The app will log your development and allow the user to view their improvements. 41

The Basin The basin can be found on the home screen of luxon. The light basin is a visualrepresentation of the user’s light exposure requiements. The goal is to fill in the basin completely by the end of each day. To fill the basin, the user must receive either sunlight or light therapy exposure.

Each day the light basin starts out empty. The user must fill it by the end of the day. How much light is required depends on the users

70

When the user is exposed to light therapy, the basin gets filled with a magenta color.

When the user is exposed to sunlight, the basin is filled with an orange color.
