HULL PUBS UPDATE New National CAMRA Discount Pubs in Hull:
We would like to wish Allen and Kay from the Lord Nelson, Endike Lane, all the best on their retirement from the end of August.
Harry Pursey, Beverley Road is one of the new pubs that have signed up for our national CAMRA voucher scheme, CVS (previously the Wetherspoon voucher). The new CVS offers member 50p off a pint, but remember you will need your valid CAMRA membership card to take advantage of the offer.
At the time of writing the New Clarence, Charles Street, is closed. We hope this is a temporary measure until the New Threatre starts its Autumn entertainment programme. Foredyke, Goodhart Road, has had an application submitted to re-open it, Claire Taverns are the operating company.
Other Hull pubs apart from the two Wetherspoon pubs Admiral of the Humber and Three John Scotts that are now part of the CVS are as follows:
Ye Olde Black Boy, High Street, Dennis Wann has taken the license of the pub; and it is now open for business daily. He has already applied for Listed Building Consent to improve and refurbish the toilets and décor. The pub will close temporarily between 7th – 17th October for the refurbishment to be done. Opening hours are Monday to Thursday 4pm to 11 pm; and Friday to Sunday 12 pm to 11.30/12am (closure dependant on trade)
Ebenezer Morley, 12-14 Anlaby Road, It is a large one roomed pub but devided into smaller more intimate areas for privacy Yates, Trinity House Chambers formerly a Barclays Bank in the Old Town with an upper level drinking area. Some old office rooms serve as quiet ‘snugs’. Haworth Arms, 449 Beverley Road, an imposing, Grade II listed, mock Tudor pub with a revolving entry door on the corner and dome in the ceiling. Features large screen sports TV, but also has a quieter separate bar.
White Hart, Alfred Gelder Street, For those of us who occasionally find the pub closed when it should be open, Dave, the licensee has confirmed that the pub’s opening hours are: 4pm to 11pm Monday to Thursday; 2pm to 12 am Friday; 12pm to 12am Saturday; and 12pm to 10.30 Sunday. He did however, as you might expect, confirm that if there is no trade later in the evenings especially in the early part of the week the pub may close earlier than stated, but no earlier than 10.00pm.
Sutton Fields, Oslo Road an impressively furnished estate pub located on the Sutton Fields industrial estate. Saltshouse Tavern, Dunvegan Road a large, two-roomed, community pub, close to the village of Sutton in east Hull.
Marquis of Granby, The Square, Hessle a There are new hours at Chilli Devil’s, please multi-roomed pub with 3 hand pumps for guest check their pub’s website for further information. ales and 1 for cider in the Lounge Bar. Station Hotel, Beverly Road is no longer selling real ale and it looks likely it will be closing for a short period whilst a new pub manager is appointed. Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA

Coach and Horses, Welwick up for sale for ÂŁ175,00 - freehold. (Info from mid July). There has been a Hessle Micropub in the pipeline for a while. Reports are that work is being done on it that suggest it may soon be up and running. After speaking to Stuart recently he is currently waiting planning permissions to come through and is using the time perfecting his recipes.

GOOD BEER GUIDE 2020 FROM ANGELA CAWTE The 2020 Good Beer Guide was published on 12th September. We are delighted that this Branch’s selection is as varied as ever. It includes a myriad of pubs either entered for the first time; re-entered or those that have maintained their place for a number of years. In alphabetical order of the pubs, these are those which are listed in what we believe is the most comprehensive guide to good real ale in the UK. Not only that but this now substantal publication could not be produced without the dedication of our members and the time they are willing to give to support the Campaign. It all seems much more real when I see the work that I and many others have done in print, as a book I can hold in my hands. I have been to all but a small handful of our nominated pubs in person in the period when we decide which should be included. In all truth my personal opinion matters very little as the selection process is the sum of many parts and opinions of many active members. CAMRA would obviously prefer you to buy your own copy rather than us reproduce content here. So for fun only can you tell me which pub has continually been in the Guide the longest? Or which pub has returned after the longest absence? Congratulations to all the licensees and their cellar staff in maintaining the required high standard. As ever let us know what you think of your pint by using the NBSS system via the Whatpub or the GBG App.

LOCALE SCHEME EXPLAINED CAMRA LocAle is an initiative which promotes pubs stocking locally brewed real ale. The scheme builds on a growing consumer demand for quality local produce and an increased awareness of ‘green’ issues. Everyone benefits from local pubs stocking locally brewed real ale… • • • • • •
Public houses as stocking local real ales can increase pub visits Consumers who enjoy greater beer choice and diversity Local brewers who gain from increased sales The local economy because more money is spent and retained locally The environment due to fewer ‘beer miles’ resulting in less road congestion and pollution Tourism due to an increased sense of local identity and pride - let’s celebrate what makes our locality different.
Participating pubs are granted accreditation at the discretion of the local branch, Hull & East Yorkshire CAMRA, and subject to the licensee agreeing that they will endeavour to ensure at least one locally brewed real ale, as defined by the local branch, is on sale at all times and that only real ale, as defined by CAMRA, can be promoted as a CAMRA LocAle.
These breweries are considered to be our LocAle breweries: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
All Hallows, Goodmanham Atom, Hull Bone Machine, Hull (NEW) Bridlington, Bridlington Bricknell, Hull Cathead, Hull Crafty Little Brewery, Brough East Yorkshire Beer Co, Beverley Great Newsome, South Frodingham Half Moon, Ellerton Old Mill, Snaith Pumphouse Brewery, Driffield (NEW) Raven Hill, Driffield Spotlight, Snaith Three Sisters, Brough Vittles and Company, Hull Wold Top, Wold Newton Woolybutt Brewshed, Hull Yorkshire Brewing Co, Hull Yorkshire Brewhouse, Hull
If your local pub carries any of our breweries’ beer cask or bottles, please contact our LocAle Officer Jon Major whose email address is on page 3 of this publication. Our current LocAle pubs are listed below and opposite.
NEW LOCALE PUB
LocAle pubs now include those with CAMRA real ale accredited bottled beers. The Definition of Local: For the purpose of the Hull & East Yorkshire scheme pubs would have to stock a beer from either an East Yorkshire brewery or from a brewery within 25 miles of the pub. Real ales from regional and national breweries as well as from microbreweries can be regarded as “local”, if they are brewed within what the branch has deemed to be the local area.

THE HISTORY OF HULL & EAST YORKSHIRE CAMRA
@hullCAMRA
MEMBERSHIP UPDATE FROM PETE FLEMING Due to changes taking place in July it is opportune in this issue to highlight the discount schemes available to CAMRA members. There are two basic discount schemes which CAMRA members can benefit from. Firstly, there is the Real Ale Discount Scheme (RADS) which offers members discounts at over 3000 pubs nationally. This is sometimes referred to as the local scheme. Under this scheme members show a valid membership card to obtain a cash discount when ordering their drink. This discount is offered by the establishment and is set by them so there is no uniform discount amount. On page 18 you will see a comprehensive list of the discounts on offer by participating establishments in our region. Pubs join and leave the scheme from time to time, as circumstances change, and currently there are around 40 pubs in our region participating. If you are aware of any changes made to these discount terms, please contact us so that we can keep this page as accurate as possible. The second scheme is the new CAMRA Voucher Scheme (CVS), operated by CAMRA and replacing the Wetherspoons voucher scheme since 1 July 2019. The key benefits of the new scheme include: • Increased value to the member • Greater flexibility of use with all vouchers valid throughout membership period • Bigger number of participating pubs giving members greater choice • Open scheme to allow more pubs and pub chains to join Wetherspoon will accept the CVS voucher and will continue to accept the existing (old Wetherspoon) vouchers while we are in the transition year. In addition to Wetherpoon, 480 Stonegate and 100 Brains pubs have joined the scheme and CAMRA are in talks with others to be added to it. At present there are over 1400 pubs listed under this scheme. Members can access a new search function via the national website; using their postcode they can search for pubs accepting the vouchers near them. The local Hull & East Yorkshire web site also provides details of the pubs participating in our region. The search facility is also available via the WhatPub and the Good Beer Guide app’s. The vouchers have the individual member’s membership number printed on them and membership cards should be made available at purchase to allow the validity to be checked. Vouchers are date stamped to match the membership period and therefore cannot be used outside of the membership. Also please note that the vouchers themselves differ from the old Wetherspoon ones quite significantly in that they are much smaller and printed on flimsier paper. Please note that individual establishments will usually participate in only one of the discount schemes so CVS vouchers will not be accepted at pubs participating in the RADS scheme. Other than the discount schemes there are other benefits of joining CAMRA; • Be a member of the most successful consumer organisation in Europe • Meet up with like-minded individuals and be part of a social and active branch with events r run throughout the year • Be involved is nominating and selecting the pubs to be included in the Good Beer Guide • Receive copies of “What’s Brewing?” and “Beer” the CAMRA newspaper and magazine • Receive the Branch newsletter setting out what is happening in the area • Obtain discounts on the RRP of CAMRA merchandise • Receive free or discounted entry to CAMRA beer festivals • Other discounts from national companies for CAMRA members (see website for details) You can sign up for membership using the form opposite or on-line at www.camra.org.uk/ If you have any questions regarding the discount scheme, news about changes to the offers that pubs make or general questions about membership please get in touch with me at: members@hull.camra.org.uk

REALLY USEFUL INFORMATION REAL ALE V SMOOTH
CAMRA HEAD OFFICE
What is Real Ale? Real Ale is a living beer. It continues to ferment and develop its full flavour in the cask. Real Ale is brewed from traditional ingredients, malt, hops, water and yeast matured by secondary fermentation in the container from which it is dispensed, and served without the extraneous use of carbon dioxide or nitrogen via hand pumps. Real Ale is also called cask beer or cask conditioned.

REAL ALE - CAMRA DEFINITION ABOUT REAL ALE
PROMOTING REAL ALE
In the early 1970’s, CAMRA coined the term ‘real ale’ to describe traditional draught cask beers, distinguishing them from the processed and highly carbonated beers that were promoted by big brewers at that time.
A core objective for the Campaign for Real Ale is to promote both the consumption and production of real ale. With nearly 2,000 breweries across the UK, you can be sure to find a taste to suit all preferences. From malty, lightly-hopped milds to dark and bitter stouts and porters, there is a beer out there for everyone. To find out more about individual beer styles, please take a look below. If you’re interested in learning more about real ale and the brewing process, why not visit our Learning & Discovery section for more resources or the CAMRA shop, where you can browse the CAMRA library of beer!
Real ale is a ‘living’ product, which is typically produced and stored in a cask container. In comparison to other types of beer that kill off the yeast and artificially inject the beer with CO2 prior to serving, real ale contains live yeast which continues to condition and ferments the beer until it is served.
Did you know that beer can be part of a moderate, healthy lifestyle? Not only is moderate consumption of beer not bad for you but it can actually have many beneficial effects.
Like any artisan product, real ale requires special handling and storing to ensure the quality of taste. Well-kept real ale served at the right temperature should be lively, naturally carbonated and flavourful – representing the pinnacle of brewing art.
Beer is a rich source of vitamins (especially B vitamins), fibre, mineral, and antioxidants which all contribute to a healthy diet. Additionally, beer is the only significant dietary source of hops, so all beneficial effects of hops can only be found in beer.
To recognise real ale, consumers should opt for beer served from the traditional hand-pull or direct from the cask. You can also enjoy real ale served in bottles and cans, as long as they are ‘bottle conditioned’.
In comparison to most alcoholic drinks, beer tends to have a relatively low alcoholic strength and it can play a vital role in a consumer’s quality of life.
Why not visit our online database What Pub to find a pub serving real ale near you?

SURVEY/OPEN MEETING/PRESENTATIONS We have been ‘experimenting’ with holding meetings in different places and at different times to encourage new members to get involved with the visits we make and meetings held. This does not necessarily work for all and as we are interested to know your thoughts so feel free to get in touch, whether with ideas for where we could hold meetings or to discuss how you think we could improve the content of the meetings.
One such occasion where we did things differently was to combine surveying with social activity and a sprinkling of campaigning when we visited Brough in early July. We travelled by train and started off as guests of Crafty Little Brewery (above) who very generously provided two casks of their beers and we were allowed to serve ourselves. From the brewery we walked to the Ferry Inn for the meeting element of the evening, this was business as usual for me. But more importantly the meeting was attended by a number of local members who find it difficut to get to meetings when they are held centrally. The third leg of our visit was to visit the Centurion Arms. This pub is the newest in Brough and has proved to be incredibly popular. This pub is the most recent recipient of our Commitment to Cask award (above right) It recognises pubs not in the Good Beer Guide but are of or better than the standard of pubs in the guide. It is a very good example of how CAMRA members need to let us know how good their local pub is. I first met the Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA
licensees Mark and Debbie Storey when they started brewing, and supplied beer to one of our Branch’s City Hall beer festivals. Although they gave up brewing sometime ago before opening the pub, I was pleased to recognise the standard they have achieved.
Out and About ........ A small group of members joined me recently to check out real ale on offer in East Hull, particularly as Barry Drinkall was keen to promote the Savoy, Ings Road. We started in Sutton at the Duke of York, with its three beers from the Marstons portfolio. We then walked to the Savoy, it is an estate pub and encourages real ale through its reasonable prices. The beer on offer at the time was Box Steam’s Tunnel Vision; everyone was very impressed by its quality. From there we walked on to the Crooked Billet and tried their Marston’s Pedigree and later on the Mill. There is a large very popular outside area here, just opposite Woodford Leisure Centre and we took advantage of this, whilst drinking from their range of three real ales. We were all reassured that real ale is alive and well in East Hull, all pubs are on bus routes so the walking can be avoided, unless of course you want to boost your step count! Another relatively new pub on the scene in Hull is the Thomas Strawberry. As a street corner pub in an industrial area it has lost what would have been its steady supply of customers in times gone by. It is however readily reached by continued on page 30

We then went on to the Plough at Hollym where our party tasted Ainsty’s Bantam Best and Wold Top Angler’s Reward.
On Saturday 22 June we went on our now annual trip to the Great Newsome Brewery FestivALE, this is our third trip and as usual it was a great day out for all. As we tend to do we combined this trip with a look in at some of the local pubs in and around Great Newsome brewery.
Our final port of call was the Crooked Billet in Ryehill, which is a traditional village pub, retaining its stone flagged floor and wooden beams. Its beers come from the Marston’s portfolio including Banks Sumbeam.
This year we stopped off at Amy’s Bar and Kitchen, in Patrington where we enjoyed Great Newsome Summer Solstise and Blue Monkey BG Sips amongst others. This micro-pub is fairly new so it gave a chance for some of our

PUMPHOUSE A NEW BREWERY & TAP IN DRIFFIELD Somehow a new brewery popped up on Facebook, a new brewery just a train ride away in Driffield. Having a spare day to explore this new tap house and to visit Butchers Dog micro pub, just a couple of minutes walk from the station, I hopped on a train. Driffield is blessed with a lovely Victorian train station that leads out onto the main road of Driffield, I had some time before Pumphouse Brewing Company opened so I settled into the Butchers Dog which is a lovely micro pub with plenty of real ale choices. I tried the Arrow pale ale by Lincoln Green brewery and the Turbine Porter by Stringers of Ulverston in Cumbria. Pleasant snug micro pub atmosphere with friendly bar staff and even snuck back for another drink before the train home.

Zsolt said should be a peachy flavour but this of course went straight into my subconscious and it did taste fleshy and fruity and couldn't help then but then taste peaches, I imagine this will be going on the tasting notes. Zsolt loves to experiment and lived and worked in America in the Boston area for five to six years, in the early 2000's when the virgining craft beer scene was just taking off and you can see a true passion for craft beer in both David and Zsolt. The last beer we tried from the tanks was brewed four days before, this is the New England Pale Ale. Wheat, oats and pale ale malt make this a delicious 4.5% to 5% hop juice when finally put out on tap.
Zsolt has ideas for twists to his beers constantly as we sample and this make the tap house and brewery so worth visiting as it will constantly change what is on tap. OCTOBER IS CIDER MONTH Real cider is traditional drink with a long and rich history in Britain and Europe with some of the earliset English works on cidermaking arising in the 1600’s and 1700’s. Apples were growing wild here in Neolithic times and probably reached Britain via a long circuitous journey from their origins in central Asia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.
Cider Styles Just like beer, cider and perry come in a variety of styles with different tastes. It’s all about finding the right style to suit you.
An important aspect of real cider and perry is that the taste and appearance can not only vary from year to year but also vary from batch to batch. Sometimes you just can’t beat em, and so with increasingly fervent demand, thirst, and nostalgia, we’re excited to announce the long-awaited return of two beloved fan-favourite cask beers: Harvest’s Gold, and Line & Length. Harvest’s Gold is a 4.7% golden ale with hints of honey and orange. First Gold hops really bring out those succulent flavours in this beer and help set it apart from your typical golden ale. Line & Length, on the other hand, is a 4.1% golden bitter. Traditionally we brewed this beer to line up with the cricket. Like other Englishmen, are still trying to find our bearings after the New Zealand world cup final, and you’ll be happy to know that this beer’s a little sweeter than most bitters. That’s mostly thanks to the Caramalt we use, but the cricket helps. If it ain’t broke……. The brewery haven’t touched these recipes at all since their last brews — if it ain’t broke, they won’t bloomin fix it — Frothingham Best new look, is the same great beer and they’ll all be available from your local in the coming days and weeks. So ask your landlord when you’re getting your share, and let the brewery know how it goes. Ta-ra! Festivale 2019 held in June raised £3936.00 for local charity Yorkshire Air Ambulance. A huge thank you to everyone who attended and helped us raise such a huge amount for the charity. Over 800 people visited the event on the day making it most successful to date. Over the last 3 years the brewery has raised over £10,000 for local charities. Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA

Raven Hill Farm, Driffield YO25 4EG 07979 674573 e-mail is hello@ravenhillbrewery.com BLO - Tony Garrett Current Ales: Summit, session IPA (ABV3.6%), Brook Pale Ale (ABV 4.3%), Elevation IPA (ABV 6.2%), Chalk Stream light pale ale (ABV 4%), Ridge Way Oatmeal Stout (ABV 5.5%). As far as we are aware, all these are available in cask or bottle. Mark continues his good working in Kilham, producing his regular beers , which have been previously listed. He has collaborated with Atom Brewery on a cherry Saison which should soon be ready for sale and with Half Moon Brewery on a chestnut ale, which was launched at the Horizon Festival in Driffield. He has also experimented on his own with a 7% IPA called High Peak and a Lavender and Rosemary Saison beer which you may have seen in a bar near you recently. Since my last Pub Mirror report, I have been asked what a “saison” beer is and there will be people more qualified to explain it than me (so apologies for any errors)! However, here is a brief explanation from the less qualified! Saisons can differ to an extent in taste, but tend to be pale, highly carbonated beers with a spicy taste that also reflects the “saison” style yeast that is used. It is often bottle conditioned, but I have seen it available in cask and keg. Historically, it was brewed as a low alcohol beer (3-3.5%) for the seasonal farm workers (Saisonniers) in Wallonia (French Speaking Belgium) in the 1700s. Farm workers were given a 5 litre daily allocation to help them get through their daily work, so no wonder it was lower alcohol. At that rate, I would stop working and fall asleep. Nowadays, it is more often a higher alcohol beer in line with the strengths of average Belgium beers and not recommended to assist working productivity! Tony Garrett

There is also access to a comprehensive list of breweries, with brief profiles and the beers they produce, and being electronic it has the advantage of being fully searchable. In order to be able to use the app for beer scoring it is necessary to link it to the user’s CAMRA account. This is a simple task following on-screen prompts and only need to be done on set up. Once this is done locate the pub you are drinking in and select its page. Just above the ‘about’ section with the pub’s description is a prompt ‘Beer Scoring’ on the left and an icon of the right. Tap on this icon to open the scoring page which has drop-down menus and is selfexplanatory. The National Beer Scoring System (NBSS) is a 0-5 (0 = No cask ale available) point scale for judging beer quality in pubs. It is acceptable Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA
Please remember that you are scoring the quality of the beer not whether it is your favourite beer or beer style. It helps the local branch to know what pubs are serving good quality beer regularly and remember that by recording these scores you are actively participating in the selection basis for future copies of the GBG. Happy drinking.
