BRIDLINGTON PUBS Bridlington News has been coming through about the former Marks and Spencers in Bridlington being bought by Amber Inns and planning consent has been agreed with the local council. The store at 8 Prince Street, will be turned into The Three Brass Monkeys Pub. The council included a condition that no music would be played in the pub’s outdoor roof terrace after 11pm.
Its application added the pub would stay open an hour later on bank holidays and other key dates such as Christmas Eve, New Years Eve and Easter Weekend. The company said would hire door staff when needed, including to monitor later entries and to act as security during large events such as big sports games screenings.
Report below published by Local Democracy Reporter Joe Gerrard on 2nd June 2020 Yorkshire Coast Radio. Gary Roberts, Amber Taverns’ operations director, said acoustic screens would be fitted in the roof terrace and that volume controls in the pub’s speaker system would ensure noise did not disturb those living nearby. He added a blanket ban on outside music would have been a “deal breaker”. We’re investing £1.2m into the Three Brass Monkeys and we plan to create five to six full time jobs with its opening. The outdoor terrace we want to put on the roof will be a great facility that will stop customers smoking and drinking in front of the pub.
(Image: East Riding of Yorkshire Council planning portal) Another new pub has also opened in the town under the name of The Three B’s Micropub It is situated in Marshall Avenue,

HULL PUBS BY JON MAJOR & BERNIE CAWTE Who would have thought when I put pen to paper for the last printed edition that we would be in the situation we are in now. The last few months have virtually brought the hospitality and entertainment industry to its knees. It’s been great to see most local breweries and a number of pubs have managed to keep going albeit in a very small way by providing a takeaway service and thanks must go to them for keeping us provided with our favourite tipple. Now looking at the future, who can say what it holds? Unfortunately I’m sure there will be a few local casualties in both pubs closing and landlords/ladies leaving due to having to still find the rents and bills for a closed pub. This last week has seen the partial reopening of some pubs but nowhere near in any way as we know and love. I ventured out on one night during the week just to have a draught pint and to meet up and catch up with others although at a social distance. It seemed very odd not being able to greet people with a handshake and a hug after so long but we did our best to comply with the pubs restrictions. Each pub I went in seemed to interpret these restrictions differently but at the same time safely. Very odd not being able to prop up the bar and having to get to grips with technology by ordering on the app, help was out there though. I’d urge everyone, if you’re healthy enough to get out and support your local whenever you can, we know it’s not the same but it’s something for now we’ll just have to get used to if we want local pubs to survive.
called Kings - Collective (above) Our first impressions are good, There was a positive of 4 handpulls on the bar available & 1 cider & also Great Newsome Sleck Dust (£3.50) which was in fabulous condition. Further information will be published for both of these new pubs on are whatpub app.
Although not a new pub but a change in name and style is O’learys (above)again on Lowgate. Previously called Jazz bar, O’Learys has a large garden and the Old Town’s only outside bar. Unfortunately no sign of any real ale,.. yet!!
One good thing I’ve noticed is the opening of a new bar on the top of Whitefriargate called the Green House (bottom right) I haven’t had chance to get in to see what’s on offer as yet but I hope to soon, I wish them all the best especially in the current climate. We are also aware of yet another new bar in what was the King Wiliiam on Lowgate

NEW ATOM BAR IN BEVERLEY It has been a long time coming, almost ready to launch on the week of lockdown, but in ATOM Beverley, the town of our founders, we finally have our second home after ATOM Hull. We have taken Atom’s ethos to an unloved classic Beverley building (7 New Walkergate) and refurbishing it over two floors in multiple rooms, each with a distinct atmosphere, then turning it up a notch with the best equipment with short lines from a bespoke cellar cold-store. Showcasing the best beers will increase Beverley’s reputation for great atmospheric venues even further. Downstairs is open plan, featuring 10 keg and 2 cask lines dedicated to a range of Atom and guest beers, also a full range of cans and bottles in fridges alongside a defined selection of wines, spirits and soft drinks. Coffee and teas are provided via our good friends at The Blending Rooms, all from behind the back bar. Upstairs has 3 rooms with a range of comfy seating and clean lines displaying a selection of Art, initially from Gary Saunt and our very own head brewer Jamie Gibson (top right). Very much like our Hull venue, our staff are our life blood. It is not just about selling beers, it’s also about explaining how they are made, what the
beer is and how it should be served. Co-Founder Allan Rice said, “Beverley has
always been somewhere we wanted to bring our own venue too. Living in Beverley it has been a huge influence on our initial plans for ATOM some years ago. We owe a lot to the town and the support we have received from our fans. To finally be able to open a venue here is immense. Opening in the current climate is not the easiest. There are huge challenges ahead, but we hope that all the hard work we have put in and our excellent staff will bring something new to the town”. LOCALE SCHEME EXPLAINED CAMRA LocAle is an initiative which promotes pubs stocking locally brewed real ale. The scheme builds on a growing consumer demand for quality local produce and an increased awareness of ‘green’ issues. Everyone benefits from local pubs stocking locally brewed real ale… • • • • • •
Public houses as stocking local real ales can increase pub visits Consumers who enjoy greater beer choice and diversity Local brewers who gain from increased sales The local economy because more money is spent and retained locally The environment due to fewer ‘beer miles’ resulting in less road congestion and pollution Tourism due to an increased sense of local identity and pride - let’s celebrate what makes our locality different.
Participating pubs are granted accreditation at the discretion of the local branch, Hull & East Yorkshire CAMRA, and subject to the licensee agreeing that they will endeavour to ensure at least one locally brewed real ale, as defined by the local branch, is on sale at all times and that only real ale, as defined by CAMRA, can be promoted as a CAMRA LocAle.

NEW LOCALE PUBS
LocAle pubs now include those with CAMRA real ale accredited bottled beers. The Definition of LocAle: For the purpose of the Hull & East Yorkshire scheme pubs would have to stock a beer from either an East Yorkshire brewery or from a brewery within 25 miles of the pub. Real ales from regional and national breweries as well as from microbreweries can be regarded as “local”, if they are brewed within what the branch has deemed to be the local area.

BEER BEER BUILDS BUILDS HULL HULL Joseph Lockwood established his business in Chapel Street, the old name for Wincolmlee in 1776 on the opposite side of the road to the current Whalebone pub, by the River Hull. He specialised in sour beer, which is beer that intentionally allows wild yeasts in to the brew via the air, or from barrels or the acidity can be added directly! In 1794 he put it up to let, along with his four public houses in the town. A John Rivis took on the brewery and by the 1840’s, just across the road on the other side of Lincoln Street, and bordering the Barmston and Beverley Drain, was The Imperial Brewery run by William and Robert Glossop. Also a little further towards town, by the river and opposite New George Street was Pryme’s Wharf Brewery.
Hull Advertiser and Exchange Gazette 6th Sept. 1794 (above) The intended inn to be built by Trinity House commenced in 1794 and completed in 1797 was the luxurious Neptune Hotel. It had twenty two rooms and each had a four poster bed. High taxes and costs meant it only survived until 1815 but then it became the Hull Customs House until 1912. The building is still there and makes up some of the old Boots the Chemist on Whitefriargate. Look up and you plainly see it.
Hull Advertiser and Exchange Gazette advert 6th Sept. 1794 (above) One of the pubs that Joseph Lockwood had was the Dock Coffee House on Quay Street, now called Guildhall Road, next to Queens Gardens. Obviously this was a The Dock, later the Queens Dock, that was opened in 1778 and was very busy and would have created a ready custom for the pub.
Mail Group - info@hull.camra.org.uk
The street in question was eventually built over a slum area and was called Parliament Street after the Act of Parliament that was required to build it. It still has the original houses on either side. The enterprise was to be financed using a Tontine Scheme. In this case two hundred subscribers would provide the capital. They would receive payments periodicaly from rents etc. A Tontine Scheme works by as each subscriber dies the income has to be divided between less people until when the last person dies the scheme is closed. There was an idea to build an arch at the north end with a large room

FROM TONY PORTER over the street, but I don’t think it was ever built.
Hull Advertiser and Exchange Gazette 6th Sept. 1794 (left) The names Mug House Entry and White Dog entry indicate that the housing in the area was not of a high class, but I love the names. There were eight inns on Whitefriargate at the time. The north end was lost with the building of the Guildhall and Alfred Gelder Street.

REAL ALE STYLES REVISITED A core objective for the Campaign for Real Ale is to promote both the consumption and production of real ale.
and taste. Medium to strong bitterness, they should be full-bodied, some fruitiness and more pronounced maltiness than in other bitters. True to the name, Strong bitters are usually 4.7% With nearly 2,000 breweries across the UK, you ABV or higher. can be sure to find a taste to suit all preferences. From malty, lightly-hopped milds to dark, bitter GOLDEN ALES stouts and porters, there is a beer out there for This new style of pale, well-hopped beer everyone. To find out more about individual beer developed in the 1980s. Golden Ales are pale styles, please take a look below. amber, gold, yellow or straw-coloured. Golden Ales have a low ABV and a clean hoppiness, without losing the core biscuity maltiness. It should be served cool and is a great summer ale. SPECIALITY Speciality beers are real ales that may be produced with novel ingredients including fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices, honey, coffee, cocoa, chocolate, flowers other than hops and cereals other than barley. The category includes caskconditioned lagers, beers made with specialist yeasts (including wild yeasts) or unusual balances of dark malts or hops, and beers of very high gravity. The classification allows for continued innovation.
MILD Mild is one of the most traditional beer styles which is enjoying a revival in today’s real ale market. Usually dark brown in colour – due to the use of well-roasted malts or barley – it is less hopped than bitters and often has a chocolatey character with nutty and burnt flavours.
OLD ALES Old Ale was traditionally stored for months or years in wooden vessels, consequentially picking up some lactic sourness. The style has re-emerged in recent years, and the hallmark remains a lengthy period of maturation, often in a bottle rather than bulk vessels. Old Ales typically range from 4% to 6.5%.
BITTER Bitters developed towards the end of the 19th century as brewers began to produce beers that could be served in pubs after only a few days storage in cellars. Bitters grew out of pale ale but were usually deep bronze to copper in colour due to the use of slightly darker crystal malts. BEST BITTER Best Bitters are between 4.1-4.6% ABV and typically brown or copper in colour. They should have an assertive hop aroma and taste, medium to strong bitterness and residual maltiness. STRONG BITTER Strong Bitters are typically brown, tawny, or copper and should have assertive hop aroma

REAL ALE STYLES REVISITED (CONT) Continued from page 30 STRONG MILDS Strong Milds are typically black or dark brown but can be paler, should be richer in caramel than old ales and may have a light roast malt character. PORTERS The original choice of London’s market and dock workers was a blend of three beers, but the style has changed constantly since then. Porters are complex in flavour, range from 4% to 6.5% and are typically black or dark brown; the darkness comes from the use of dark malts. STOUTS Porters and Stouts share a similar origin. The strongest versions of Porter were known as Stout Porter, reduced over the years to simply Stout. Unlike Porters, Stouts use roasted malted A6 landscape ad.pdf 6 31/03/2016 barley. Stouts can beWTdry or sweet and now 18:41 generally range from 4% to 8% ABV.

BARLEY WINE Barley Wine is strong – often between 10% and 12% – and is traditionally stored for 18 months or two years. Expect massive sweet malt and ripe fruit of the pear drop, orange and lemon type, with darker fruits, chocolate and coffee if darker malts are used. Hop rates are generous and produce bitterness, as well as peppery, grassy and floral notes. STRONG OLD ALES Strong old ales display an extraordinary alcohol content and may have a high residual sweetness. Typically dark brown or black, they may have a very rich malty character, light roast malts, dark fruit flavours and chocolate and coffee flavours. THE BRANCH CHAIRPERSON VIEW BY ANGELA CAWTE As Chair of the Branch I am very grateful to all involved to make this ‘publication’ possible and I hope in some small way it will affirm to many that we will continue to support those who brew and sell the real ale we all love. The Campaign exists as a powerful consumer group. This hopefully will continue seamlessly even though Covid 19 secure arrangements are changing what this involves at present. It has been interesting to see other organisations trying to do things slightly differently. I believe that we all as beer lovers, pub customers, traditionalist or modernists all have a responsibilty to do what we can to support all parts of the industry during the current difficulties we are all living with. So please continue to support the Campaign in anyway you can.

We owe a debt of gratitude to them. Again, a further reason to do what we can now to carry on and keep drinking!
