FROM THE EDITOR - BERNIE CAWTE Welcome to the Spring edition of Pub Mirror. This is the 40th edition which I have been responsible for and as no new people have come forward at our AGM, I will continue to do the work until a replacement can be found.
the place of Alex Hayward as our cider rep and Trevor Wraith taking on the Bridlington Pub co-ordinator role following the death of Charlie Kettley. The AGM was also supported by our Yorkshire Regional Director Kevin Keaveney a member of the York Branch. Our thanks also go to the staff at Head of Steam for making our AGM the success it was. Now that the AGM is done, we will now fully concentrate on the 42rd Hull Real Ale & Cider Festival, which takes place on 14th to 16th May at Hull Minster. It is a month later than usual owing to various events at the Minster in April, but in one way this may make beer choices all the more interesting, follow us on our website at www.hullbeerfestival.camra.org.uk or our social media pages on facebook and twitter.
The AGM (above) was held at the Head of Steam, Hull and was well supported by members form all over the branch area. That support is most welcome and appreciated. The officers and other branch posts were confirmed and the full list of those elected is on page 3. There are still quite a few vacancies, so if you enjoy this magazine and support CAMRA in our aims, why not look and see what you can do for the branch. You do obviously need to be a CAMRA member. There are two new changes on our list on page 3 with Esther Rowan taking
Finally we would like to place on record our thanks to the following pubs, for the hospitality shown for our various Branch meetings and activities over the last few months: St John’s Hotel, Hull New Clarence, Hull Ye Olde White Harte, Hull, Head of Steam, Hull

HULL PUBS UPDATE FROM JON MAJOR I know it’s probably slightly late but I’d like to start my first report this year by wishing all licensees, customers and readers a very happy new year, a year which I hope will see many more people trying real ales.
that are selling real ale or real cider that you think has gone unnoticed please get in touch, I endeavour to get round as many as possible.
Just after the last issue went to press I learned that Walters bar on Scale Lane had been taken over and has now changed names to Scale & Feather (below). Chung Wright, the owner and
The George on Land of Green Ginger was closed for most of February as they undergo a transformation of their upstairs bar to a sports bar offering pool, darts and live televised sports.
Another bar that is fast becoming a very popular live music venue is Service Station on George Firstly, may I pass my personal congratulations Street, this is a busy bar popular with all ages. on to all the winners and runners up of our Pub The best news is they have now installed a hand of the Year especially those in Hull, all of which pull ale from Great Newsome brewery, a great offer exceptional quality ales. The judging of this addition for a circuit of pubs around the Hull city gets more and more difficult each year as there centre. are so many pubs now selling good quality ales. So far this year I have heard great news around One thing to really look forward to is the well the pubs of Hull. over due reopening of King Billy on Market Place. It is due to open in mid March as Kings. As I reported in the last issue The Alexandra This promises to be another go to music venue on Hessle Road has installed real ale, but now with plans of offering workshops, gourmet food they’ve gone one further and are now selling and a DJ academy. With a promise of selling real cider and offer CAMRA discount and run a local real ales I look forward to reporting on this loyalty card scheme. once it’s up and running, watch this space.
Savile Row on Savile Street has been closed since New Year’s Eve due to a burst water main flooding the bar, they are now going through a major refurbishment and hoping to reopen mid to late March. So far this year I’ve visited a number of Hull pubs and I’m glad to report the majority are selling quality ales. One day in particular I visited the Princes Avenue/ Newland Avenue area as I haven’t been there for some time and my stand out pub during the day was Gardeners Arms on Cottingham Road. I was pleasantly surprised with the great mixture of ages from the older generation in the front bar through to the students in the back bar all drinking real ale. There were four ales on offer when I visited and with it being a Monday they were a pound cheaper.
landlord re-opened the bar in November 2019. The name refers to scale for fish and feather for chicken and he hopes to serve food here shortly with kitchens at the top of the building. The building was once home to restaurant Venn named after Hull born mathematician and philosopher John Venn who introduced the Venn diagram. Chung hopes to stock Belgian bottle beers alongside ever changing local ales. if you’re in the old town area it’s well worth a visit
Last month on a visit to a pub I had the pleasure of meeting a lovely couple Jill & Eric who are avid readers of the Pub Mirror and get ideas from the reports in here to plan their days out. It was a pleasure meeting them both and great to hear what they thought of the pubs they visit. If you also follow our reports it would be great to hear what you think of the pubs mentioned, email me at hullpubs@hull.camra.org.uk
One pub that has been selling real ale for some time but has escaped my attention is the Bank on Holderness Road. They have one hand pull ale in which is from Great Newsome brewery. This pub is a busy sports bar which also boasts live music nights. If you know of any Hull pubs Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA

EAST YORKSHIRE PUBS UPDATE FROM MARK BAINTON Bridlington. The Station Buffet refreshment rooms has ceased trading and all the memorabilia went under the hammer in February. The building belongs to British Rail.
winner of the Village Pub of the Year and also our Pub of the Season award and finally to Goodmanham Arms in Goodmanham, runner up also in the Village category. OTHER PUB NEWS The Bricklayers Arm, Laxton - report from John Rushforth - are you aware of this pub? It is a real hidden gem on the backroads between Blacktoft and Howdendyke. This pub qualifies as a LocAle pub as they always have two of our local brewery ales available (this time Anglers Reward plus Against The Grain own branded for them by the Mellors as Laxtonbury in honour of the beer festivals they put on), plus Acorn Brewery’s Barnsley Gold as a guest ale. It is a dog friendly pub.
Long Riston. The Travellers Rest has been bulldozed and the plan is to build another public house on the site. Beverley. Durham Ox has reopened, beers from the Marstons range. Atom is the name of Atom Brewery new pub in Beverley. A row of former Grade II-listed cottages, situated on New Walkergate which were most recently used by Roots Rum Shack and Kitchen until its closure last December, will soon become Atom’s second bar.
Landlord is Dave Huntley, a very amiable chap and his wife Judy who is in charge of the kitchen where everything is prepared from scratch, all fresh produce, so it’s worth a visit for ther food too.
Royal Standard - gained new licensees just before Christmas, it is Peter and Vanessa’s first venture as licensees here. So far they have sold Sharps Doom Bar, Tetley Cask and Timothy Taylor Landlord, They plan to make more use of the outdoor area at the rear of the pub.
Board, Skipsea This pub now offers two real ales in winter months but increases the choice in summer to three. To ensure quality at all times a sold out beer is not replaced until the start of the following weekend so it is possible that only one real ale is available
Rose and Crown - This characterful foodorientated pub/restaurant is for sale Freehold and Free of Tie for £450.000.
The owners also operate a pub in Bridlington the Funny Onion, which is now a brew-pub so Cornerhouse - This popular Grade II Listed the ale will be coming to the Board too. The first establishment is understood to be for sale full batches from the new brewery are due end Freehold. Planning consent was granted in 2016 of March. A few trial batches will be avaiable to extend the building over the beer garden to before then. create a new bar and dining area. Pourhouse Micropub, Hessle As reported in a previous edition this new micropub has now confirmed it has two handpulls and at the time of writing both were from Great Newsome brewery. The bar has an industrial feel with concrete floors, basic seating and bright lighting, a very modern looking bar.
Hedon The Shakespeare Inn has reopened under Katherine Lowe’s leadership, a previous licensee’s daughter. The CAMRA discount will be continued, but Kate hasn’t finalised the level. The reopening of the Station is still supposed to be April, but no more details are available.
Finally I was saddened to hear that the Branch lost our Pubs Liaison Officer for Bridlington Charlie Kettley passed away recently, he will be sadly missed (see page 10)
Congratulations go out to Chequers Micropub in Beverley winner of the branch Cider Pub of the Year, Butchers Dog in Driffield won the branch’s Town Pub of the year with the Monks Walk in Beverley runner up. Hugh Fitz- Baldric in Cottingham was the Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA

THE QUIET MAN IN THE CORNER - CHARLIE KETLEY It is with great sadness that Charlie Ketley passed away on Monday 3rd February. The man who was proud of his Lincolnshire roots and a fan of Batemans Brewery. He first appeared in Bridlington a few years ago, his love of cask ale brought him to the Board Inn. He would sit quietly in the corner near the book case sipping his beer while attempting the Daily Mail crossword, never to complete one. Starting on the guest ale, just to sample it before enjoying a few pints of Fullers ESB
Before long everyone knew Charlie, he became a well liked and loved customer by all who met him. He became part of the fixture and fittings. When somebody new came into the Board, he took great pleasure in telling the customer about the pub and often giving the ladies a guided tour. One day we were discussing the role of CAMRA and the Bridlington area, this led to Charlie volunteering to deliver the Pub Mirrors. Although we all knew when he delivered then as he would moan about the weight of the publication. He had a love of all things traditional, even down to the slice or two of bread and dripping. A man of habit who would order a second pint while half way down the first, often having one drink on the bar and another in the corner. He had his routine of which pubs to visit and depending on the day could be found in the Southcliffe, Prior John, Telegraph, Pack Horse and the Board. The other days he would take advantage of his bus pass and visit the other towns and villages nearby. When attending CAMRA meetings he would always visit the Olde White Harte for a pint of Old Peculier.
Charlie would sit in that corner, satisfied with enjoying his beer, slowly started to become a regular customer, no longer the quiet man in the corner. He would pass the time of day with other customers discussing the topic of the day, but often discussing the merits of breweries and their cask ales
Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA
A gentleman and friend who was liked by everyone who had the pleasure of his company. The next time you visit the pub, raise your glass to the quiet gentleman in the corner. Cheers Charlie, RIP Mark Pennington

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR - NEWS FROM THE ALEXANDRA I would like to write to thank you for the kind undressed. The night club has long since closed write up by Jon Major that featured in the Winter though is still mainly intact and has a capacity edition of Pub Mirror. of 300 plus, is shortly to begin a new life as a licensed café and function room, which as Jon Both the article and the advert, that I must give Major alluded to will have its very own brew thanks to Bernie Cawte (for turning my scribbles house at the rear but open to view. into an advert) generated a positive response We have been given some very compelling and resulted in many new faces visiting which is information that suggests a tunnel exits the always a bonus. cellar though we are not sure how far it goes or where as yet. I am researching the History of the Alexandra formerly known as The Hessle Road Inn until Finally, an update if I may. There are now the mid-1800’s possibly changing its name four hand pumps and four ciders for now with when Hull Brewery acquired it. The building was more planned for the future. Always available extensively re-modelled and extended in 1895. will be two from Yorkshire Brew House the Incidentally in my research I am back to 1725 Faithful Stout and Reet Amber Ale. The other and the Public House pre dates this. So far it is two pumps are everchanging and I’ll listen to unclear when the Public House was built. suggestions. I was able to dispel some of the misconceptions held by our new visitors. Many of the tales centre around the fact that the Public House has 3 windows featuring the Star of David. These windows were incorporated when the building was extended to blend into the surrounding area which was predominantly Jewish and the burial ground to the East side. I can say with confidence the Public House was never a Jewish counting house and nor were dead bodies “dressed” prior to burial in the building adjoining the rear of the Public House. In fact, to the rear of the Public House used to be a gay night club of “some repute” and from the stories I’ve been told there is probably more truth in the tales of very live bodies been
With Thanks Mark. From the editor Thanks Mark for taking the time to write to us with regards the previous issue of PM and the article writen and advert produced. We are always happy to help with both for any other pubs that may be interested. It is always rewarding to get such feedback. In fact in this issue alone approximately half the adverts are ‘in house’ productions. LOCALE SCHEME EXPLAINED CAMRA LocAle is an initiative which promotes pubs stocking locally brewed real ale. The scheme builds on a growing consumer demand for quality local produce and an increased awareness of ‘green’ issues. Everyone benefits from local pubs stocking locally brewed real ale… • • • • • •
Public houses as stocking local real ales can increase pub visits Consumers who enjoy greater beer choice and diversity Local brewers who gain from increased sales The local economy because more money is spent and retained locally The environment due to fewer ‘beer miles’ resulting in less road congestion and pollution Tourism due to an increased sense of local identity and pride - let’s celebrate what makes our locality different.

NEW LOCALE PUBS
Participating pubs are granted accreditation at the discretion of the local branch, Hull & East Yorkshire CAMRA, and subject to the licensee agreeing that they will endeavour to ensure at least one locally brewed real ale, as defined by the local branch, is on sale at all times and that only real ale, as defined by CAMRA, can be promoted as a CAMRA LocAle.
BANK (HULL)
LocAle pubs now include those with CAMRA real ale accredited bottled beers. The Definition of LocAle: For the purpose of the Hull & East Yorkshire scheme pubs would have to stock a beer from either an East Yorkshire brewery or from a brewery within 25 miles of the pub. Real ales from regional and national breweries as well as from microbreweries can be regarded as “local”, if they are brewed within what the branch has deemed to be the local area.

@hullCAMRA
MEMBERSHIP UPDATE FROM PETE FLEMING CAMRA has a diverse membership and appreciates that the future of the organisation depends on encouraging young drinkers to join and bring their energy and enthusiasm to our campaigning. They are encouraged to join in social activities and get involved in CAMRA at a local, regional and national level. So special membership prices are available for those under 26 at £18 a year which is a great offer. A dedicated Young Members Group meets twice a year, representing the views of 18 to 30-year olds and feeding those back to the volunteer leadership. As a Branch we have a role of Young Members Co-ordinator which is currently vacant. So, if you are a young member (preferably under 30) of the Hull & East Yorkshire Branch and would like to get actively involved with organising events for our young members as well as taking onboard their views and representing their interests then please get in touch with us. Even if you are a bit older than that and want to get involved with organisation social activities for the Branch we can happily accommodate you as we are currently looking for a Social Secretary. If this positions interests you then feel to get in touch with us for a chat. To build on the success of CAMRA we need new members to maintain and grow our membership levels and we need more of them to take an active role with Branch activities and promoting real ale and cider in general. What are the benefits of joining CAMRA? Well there is the chance to meet up with like-minded individuals but there are also several more tangible benefits, • Be a member of the most successful consumer organisation in Europe • Be part of a social and active branch with events run throughout the year • Be involved is nominating and selecting the pubs to be included in the Good Beer Guide • Copies of “What’s Brewing?” and “Beer” the CAMRA newspaper and magazine • Receive the Branch newsletter setting out what is happening in the area • Obtain discounts on the RRP of CAMRA merchandise • Receive free or discounted entry to CAMRA beer festivals • Discount on real ales in some pubs locally and nationally (Real Ale Discount Scheme – RADS) • £30 (60x50p) of discount vouchers under the CAMRA Voucher Scheme (CVS) • Other discounts from national companies for CAMRA members (see website for details) You can sign up for membership using the form opposite or on-line at www.camra.org.uk/ On page 17 of Pub Mirror 109 there was a detailed summary of the RADS and CVS schemes but if you still have any questions about them or news about changes to the offers that pubs make or general questions about membership please get in touch with me at members@hull.camra.org.uk

REALLY USEFUL INFORMATION REAL ALE V SMOOTH
CAMRA HEAD OFFICE
What is Real Ale? Real Ale is a living beer. It continues to ferment and develop its full flavour in the cask. Real Ale is brewed from traditional ingredients, malt, hops, water and yeast matured by secondary fermentation in the container from which it is dispensed, and served without the extraneous use of carbon dioxide or nitrogen via hand pumps. Real Ale is also called cask beer or cask conditioned.

What are ‘Smooth’ beers? Smooth beers are brewed in much the same way as real ale but eventually the natural yeast is killed and processed to give longer shelf life.

2019 PUBS OF THE YEAR AWARD TRIP Regular readers will know that we award our best pubs annually and this year is no exception. This year we did things a little differently by making almost all the awards in one day; this allowed us to make the awards on equal terms.
for this decided Chequers was the best, judged on the same criterion as real ale other than the drink itself where the quality of the cider is considered. The award of Cider Pub of the Year was presented to the pub’s manager Julie (below) as the licensee Ian Allott was unavailable.
The process begins when members vote for the next year’s Good Beer Guide as we use these scores to identify the best pubs in terms of the quality of their real ale or cider and then send a number of volunteers to judge these pubs on the ways in which they demonstrate CAMRA’s values, such as value for money and inclusion. Time and time again it is said by some that certain places are excluded, however if you are a CAMRA member you will have been and are invited to be involved at all stages of this process, so if this applies to you get in touch!
The Monks Walk just a short walk (pardon the pun) away was taken over by the Pickford family, Neil and Gill in 2016. Again this pub is another with interesting period features, including medieval timbers. It was Neil and Gill’s intention was to return customers to the art of conversation while they enjoy their pints, sadly Neil passed away a while ago but Gill has continued their dream and was very happy with being awarded Runner-up Town Pub of the Year in recognition of how their plans have come to fruition (the award next to a picture of Neil)
We started at Hull’s White Hart, in Alfred Gelder Street, the pub re-opened after being closed for many years to give the Crafty Little Brewery a
tap, by Dave Snaith(above) and his family. It was particularly significant that this pub was reopened because of its unspoilt interior and the number of features mean the pub is recognised nationally by CAMRA. Our members and judges think highly of the the pub and its beer quality and it deserves its place as runner-up Hull Pub of the Year 2019.
Onwards to Driffield and the Butchers Dog; some consider this a micro-pub, it is indeed small as our group filled it for the presentation of Town Pub of the Year to Natalie Waudby, licensee. It is a converted shop, and has won the award previously several times. Respect of the values that CAMRA expects have been
The second stop was Chequers Micropub, Beverley. Cider is more of a speciality and there are fewer pubs that sell what CAMRA recognises as cider than real ale. It is perhaps more difficult to decide which is best, our judges Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA

BY ANGELA CAWTE demonstrated here since it opened which is reflected in its popularity. Natalie (below) also
provides a wide range of ciders as well as five real ales. As one of our youngest publicans it is good to see the future in good hands. A drive through country lanes to Goodmanham and the Goodmanham Arms followed, Abbie and Vito Logozzi took on what was a failing pub around 10 years ago, this pub has been a consistent winner/runner-up ever since. It remains a testament to the rewards hard work can bring and proof that that village pubs
do have a future, if the customer’s overall experience is a good one. On this occasion I presented the certificate to Vito (above) who took a brief break in his duties as host. We enjoyed a wide range of real ales here including those of the on site All Hallows Brewery. We left Goodmanham for Cottingham and the Hugh Fitz-Baldric; relatively new to the real scene in Cottingham and another converted shop, again considered by some as a micropub. Here the licensee Shirley Bamforth won Village Pub of the Year, after last year when Continued on next page

2019 PUB’S OF THE YEAR AWARD TRIP (CONT) continued from previous page she won runner-up for her other pub in Hedon was even more pleased that she and her team were recognised again. Relatively recently the range of real ales was reduced to six to allow a greater focus on quality which obviously proved to be a winning decision. Shirley (below 2nd left)) also was the first winner of our new Pub
There are a number of common threads running through the awards; one is youth, great to see younger people taking on a pub and doing it all so well, the wider range of quality products, such as canned craft beers allowing for those with dietary restrictions to enjoy a beer like everyone else, as a woman I was pleased that I made so many awards to other women and that pubs are moving towards reflecting wider society and being more inclusive. Finally it is essential to thank and recognise the members who have given their time to judge, score and vote to make all this possible and even more to Mark ‘Beefy’ who gave his time to drive us around.

of the Season award, this is in its infancy and recognises the members’ choice of best pub in the branch that is not currently in the Good Beer Guide. The final leg of the journey was to the Whalebone and the Hull Pub of the Year and runner-up Cider Pub of the Year. Here licensee
Jamie Reading (above) won Pub of the Year yet again, Jamie had been taught a lot of what he knows by one of the founder members of our branch Alex Craig, sadly Alex is no longer with us but he rescued the Whalebone a traditional corner pub in Hull’s Wincolmlee area and Jamie has worked very hard to keep the pub and make it better and better. As the recipient of both awards Jamie proves his dedication to give us all a great experience. Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA

BEERS, BOATS AND BOOZERS My wife surprised me when she suggested that we give up work and buy a narrow boat! We had had several hire boat holidays when the children were smaller but I had not expected that. A year later we had found a new boat and were setting off to explore the rivers and canals of England and Wales. We started out in April 2013 and every year since we have spent five or six months on board our 59’ vessel that we have called ‘Holderness’ with a ‘port of registry’ of Hedon Haven. I decided to write a blog about our time aboard and this can be found at nbholderness.blogspot.com This gave me the chance to sample different breweries and ales around the country and I later started to record the pubs and drinks that we found with the help of our canal guides and the Good Beer Guides. All views expressed are my own.
in front of the iconic Liver Buildings, and then through the World Heritage site of Albert Dock to get to the moorings at Salthouse Dock. It is a great journey to complete and puts you right at the heart of Liverpool, and handy for exploring the many pubs it has to offer. There are many pubs to choose from in Liverpool, from the grandeur of the Philharmonic to the many back street boozers. However we always return to one on Moorfields which is just north of the city centre. It has been under the threat of closure several times, but always seems to bounce back. The Lion Tavern (below) is named after the steam locomotive
From Burscough we headed into Liverpool. As you have to pen down into the dock system numbers of boats are limited for each passage. We passed through Halsall Cutting (below)
that handled the trains between Liverpool and Manchester around 1838 and is now in the Museum of Liverpool. It was last in steam in 1953 for the making of the film ‘The Titfield Thunderbolt’. where the first sod of the Leeds Liverpool Canal was first cut on 5th Nov. 1770. It wasn’t until 19th Oct. 1816 that the full length was opened for traffic. The next high light is the Stanley Locks down into the dock of the same name. Here you pass the very impressive Tobacco Warehouse that was built in 1901. It was then claimed to be the largest area of brick building in the world. The 14 storey building is 125’ high and took 27 million bricks to construct and covers 36 acres! It became disused in the 1980’s but has now been rescued and is being converted to apartments. We then passed through tunnels and locks right Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA
The pub is a real gem and was refurbished in 2017. The interior is amazing retaining many of the features that were there when it was built over 180 years ago. It is on the CAMRA Register of Historic pub interiors. In 1915 they expanded into the building next door so the layout changed. The bar is as earlier, but the News Room, named in etched glass, is from this time as is the skylight over the passage between them. There are Art Nouveau tiled dados in the passage way and public bar and a mosaic floor in the passageway. Above the dado is a timber and etched glass screen with advertising that is a rarity. The back of the bar is a lovely wooden and glass Victoria piece. The bar counter is wooden with consoles

and even has match strikers still. The hatch leading through to the passageway and News Room is always busy. We have always had a warm welcome here and folks are just happy to chat. We joined a team for a pub quiz once too.
The beer I choose was a ‘Langton Spin’. This brew was created for the 250th Anniversary of the Liverpool Pilot Service in 2016. Having been a Humber Pilot, it was meant to be. The golden beer at 4.4% came with a good head There were 6 or 7 hand pulls on for our visit and and beautiful golden honey colour. It was well I chose a beer from Peerless Brewing Co. They balanced with a good mix of initial bitterness, are based in Birkenhead, across the Mersey and with the citrus of the hops coming later to the have been going since 2009, the first brewery in mouth. The name ‘Langton Spin’ comes from a the town since the Birkenhead Brewery closed difficult manoeuvre that is needed to turn a large in the late 60’s. Around 2011 a new team took ship in the river to enter the lock bow first. A pub over and the name became Peerless after I would highly recommend that you search out the advertising slogan for the old Birkenhead when in Liverpool

THE HAPPY WANDERERS’ RAIL ALE ADVENTURES Anyone who knows me describes me as a ‘beer & pub geek’ who loves nothing more than visiting different towns & cities on my days off. I am lucky that due to the nature of my work I get an extra week annual leave to most so like to use it wisely by hopping on trains, more often than not accompanied by my good friend and branch member Steve Allison.
you can browse and purchase vinyl records.
One aspect of my geekiness for all things beer is that I love nothing more than to plan pub routes. This can sometimes be challenging thanks in no small part to opening hours, transport timings and sometimes the logistics of getting to pubs that might be off the beaten track but it’s a challenge & one I love to embrace! In this edition I take a look at a day out that I had recently with Pub Mirror Editor and Festival Organiser Bernie Cawte as we spent the afternoon in Bradford which was a new pub city to me but pretty familiar to Bernie. Is it worth a visit? Read on to find out. Unsurprisingly I had a pre-planned pub route that started in an industrial estate a 20-25 minute walk from the station at an incredibly friendly and unspoilt traditional street corner pub
Record Café (above) has a very laid back atmosphere, well-kept beers and friendly staff, I could easily have had more than 1 half in here. Well deserving of its Pub of the Year award! Pub 3 saw us visit Peacock Bar which is an Indian-themed bar with 4 ales, 2 ciders, keg products plus Indian street food (that smelt amazing) on the ground floor and an upstairs room with sports TV that doubles up as a function room. This is a venue that prides itself on community focus with numerous artists and theme nights advertised, a great concept and easy to see why it’s so popular.
Next we crossed the road to The Sparrow (above) which is another café style pub owned by Kirkstall Brewery. 6 ales on offer served in top condition, plus a great keg beer selection and a fabulous welcome, what more do you need?
The Fighting Cock (above) A midweek visit had me questioning what would be on offer at the bar but on our arrival after a friendly welcome we were greeted by a heart-warming sight of 12 real ales on the bar. We got to sample four between us, all in top condition making this very A short walk took us back in the direction of the worthy of the long walk. station to sample one of the four ales on offer at City Vaults, a well maintained central pub with Our next pub was current Bradford CAMRA Pub a safe but well-kept beer selection before a visit of the Year, Record Café which comprises of an to the excellent Exchange Craft Beer House, open plan single ground floor room with 4 real a Nightjar Brewery cellar bar where we got to ales, a number of ciders and keg beer plus a sample Nightjar beers plus a lovely white stout charcuterie. FROM MARK SPIGHT
Serving excellent Yorkshire Beers, Ciders & Lagers Plus a selection of Fine Wines & Spirits
Before my visit I asked on social media for recommendations of any hidden gems that I might miss. One comment was ‘even if you don’t have a beer, walk through Sunbridgewells and tell the world’. WOW, just WOW… They were not wrong!! Sunbridgewells has to be seen to be believed, Described as an underground retail experience this does not do it justice, it is a spectacular location packed with history, retail outlets, galleries and even better 2 real ale pubs (Wallers Brewery and Rose & Crown, above). The owner gave us a brief tour and explained the history of the venue which is an architectural masterpiece. Jaw dropping is the best way to describe the venue.
Our final stop of the day is the multi award winning Jacobs Beer House better known as Jacobs Well (above) Dating back to 1811 this pub had a tasteful refurbishment and was reopened in 2013. A fabulous range of 8 wellkept real ales, numerous ciders, knowledgeable and friendly bar staff and great conversations with locals. Located close to Bradford Interchange this was a great way to finish our afternoon.

My only disappointment of the day was that missed out on CAMRA national heritage pub New Beehive Inn & Rose & Crown due to opening times, plus Corn Dolly as we simply ran out of time before our train. Don’t worry though, after what I experienced today I will certainly return

In fact, the only thing we really have left to do is use the damn thing! There’s simply no better way to mark a first brew than with a beer named Debut. With AngloAmerican Hops this Pale Ale has a Malty Base with a balance between those zesty, fruity notes of the hops, and a pleasant malty flavour. Debut gets that yin-yang stability just right with a beautiful biscuit base. Availability, as always, check with your landlord as to whether we’ll be supplying them. That being said: we’re only going to brew Debut once. That’s right: once. Look, you only get one Appetite for Destruction, one The Stone Roses, and one Led Zeppelin*. A TRIP TO FLAMBOROUGH FROM MARK PENNINGTON The hardy drinkers were not put off by the heavy showers and decided to stay on the bus to North Landing. Alas, due to the winter season only one cask, Timothy Taylor's Landlord. We had one pub to visit but did not open until 5pm. So we sampled several Landlords until the clock reached 5pm, out of the back door and into the Seabirds. cask ales. As yet not a drop of ale had passed our lips, undeterred, we headed for the Viking (above). To our surprise, a warm welcome and a real fire with two cask ales available. Very reasonably priced, Daleside Brewery Blonde and Pride of England, both enjoyable drinks which lifted our spirits. A dog friendly pub, we left them some Another warm welcome at the Seabirds (below) Pub Mirrors and headed to the Rose and Crown and two casks ales, Rudgate Green Hop Monster and Great Newsome beers which ran out after one pint. A short while later Jason had order restored and another Great Newsome ale, Yule Do was flowing freely. This turned out to be the beer of the day with the Viking coming a close second. Overall it was a trip of highs and lows but would be interesting to revisit Flamborough in the summer months.
(below) A long walk, but the rain had stopped, unfortunately no cask ales available as the bar staff explained was due to technical difficulties. Across the road to the Ship Inn (above right) A friendly welcome and two cask ales available, Bombardier and Bradfield’s Farmers Blonde. Both satisfactory beers we sampled a few more before heading to the Royal Dog and Duck (middle right) with high expectations. Hull and East Yorkshire CAMRA

LOVE YOUR LOCAL? MAKE 2020 THE SUMMER OF THE PUB CAMRA’s ‘Summer of Pub’ campaign is back this year to get as many people as possible enjoying the season of good – well, better - weather by heading down to their local for a pint. We will be celebrating how our nation’s pubs offer numerous benefits to people’s mental and social well-being and play an instrumental role in the communities they serve. Drinking cheap supermarket bought alcohol at home does little to improve your life – but change that setting to the social environment of a pub and you can increase your happiness, make friends and connect with others in your local community, while still enjoying the tipple of your choice.
how much you love your local this Summer. This is the Bank Holiday weekend when the Government has extended licensing hours for pubs across England and Wales to mark the 75th anniversary of VE day - truly, making the event a PUBlic holiday! We look forward to seeing plenty of people down their local, raising a glass to three quarters of a century of freedom in Europe – and, of course, the start of Summer!” As the season progresses, make sure to plan a pub visit for some of our key celebratory dates, whether it’s: UEFA Euro Championships (12 June – 12 July), Beer Day Britain (15 June), The Great British Beer Festival (4 – 8 August), or one of many others leading up to the closing PUBlic Holiday weekend (29 - 31 August).
