Put on a set of headphones and disappear into a sound of adventure, with a 5km wheelchair friendly trip across the Humber Bridge. In this immersive event that evokes the long history of sea travel from Hull and the Humber Bridge’s symbolic connotations of home, Norwegian musicians and the Orchestra and Chorus of Opera North come together to blend their sound with the Bridge’s own deep music for a sonic experience like no other. Art and industry combine in this dual celebration of Marcel Duchamp’s controversial Fountain and the 200-year anniversary of British ceramic manufacturers, Armitage Shanks.
Having invited artists, writers and 25 Apr, 6pm musicians to respond Brodrick Gallery, Hull to Duchamp’s most School of Art and Design notorious artistic work through their own creative ARTISTS’ practice, Ideal EXHIBITION, Standard UK and Hull CRITICAL EVALUATION School of Art and Design will hold two 6 May, 7pm critical evaluation KAG Gallery, events to discuss Humber Street projects submitted to form the Fountain17 exhibition.

The second instalment of Look Up, the yearlong programme of temporary artworks made for the city’s public spaces and places, includes a touch tour of Chris Dobrowolski’s work, and a BSL interpreted talk about the project. A co-commission with The Deep, Dobrowolski’s work is an artistic exploration of the environmental impact plastics are having on our oceans.

A year-long epic told online, live in Hull and on BBC TV, Flood is the story of what happens when the world is destroyed, and how those who survive make it new again. THE RAFT OF THE MEDUSA 30 Apr, 2pm Humber Street Gallery Join us for a BSL exhibition tour of The Raft of the Medusa. The Raft of the Medusa is a multisensory installation constructed using wood salvaged by the crew of the shipwrecked vessel. THE TRAIN TRACK AND THE BASKET CLAIRE BARBER
23 May, 12pm Hull Paragon Interchange, Welcome Pod Exploring the notion of transmigration, Claire Barber’s installation at Hull’s Paragon Station pays homage to the two million people who arrived in the city via boat between 1848 and 1914, before journeying on to the ports of Liverpool and Southampton by train to seek new lives in the New World. Learn about the project’s inspiration at a BSL interpreted talk on 23 May.

Touch Tour 15 Jun, 2pm (BSL interpreted) 20 Jun, 12pm (Touch tour) Meeting point outside Hull City Hall Claire Morgan is creating a striking, large scale work to be suspended in the atrium of Princes Quay shopping centre. Claire’s installations have been seen all over the world in galleries, museums and public spaces. Her suspended installations are often made of extremely delicate materials such as dandelion seeds, feathers and petals. Her work is concerned with natural materials and processes, and how we relate to our environment.

THE BIG MALARKEY FESTIVAL Relaxed Performance

1-2 Jul Malarkey Park, East Park The Big Malarkey Festival is Hull’s first children’s literature festival, inviting one and all into a world of stories, books, poetry, comics, music, rhyme, song and dance. Featuring activities and workshops for all abilities, including two relaxed performances and touch tours (to be confirmed on our website), this is a chance to let the imagination run riot and conjure up some creative magic, with a little help from writers, poets and puppeteers. Made possible with funding from the James Reckitt Library Trust, The Big Malarkey is for everyone aged 0 – 16 to enjoy alongside their family and friends.

PAPER CITY 6 Jul, 2pm Humber Street Gallery A 10-day event celebrating colour and the freedom to play, leading artists and designers experiment with the most fundamental creative material – paper. Together, they will transform the Fruit Market into a vibrant palette of creativity, free for all to enjoy, using specialist coloured paper from Hull company G . F Smith. Take a BSL interpreted tour of the spaces and places given a rainbow-hued makeover on 6 July.

THE BIG GIG 8 Jul, 1-7pm Pearson Park Hull Red presents The Big Gig, a festival with mainstream artists featuring accessible performances and workshops, where people with learning disabilities can feel safe and comfortable to be themselves and have a great time. A guided tour of the exhibition for audiences with access needs. Featuring Larkin’s love of music, unseen letters, photographic memories and personal possessions, the exhibition explores connections between his life and work in Hull and the writing that led to him being described as Britain’s best loved poet.

DO YOU SEE WHAT I MEAN? Music, song, drama, projections and comedy all collide in this artistic revue from members of Northern Academy of Performing Arts’ visually impaired group. Based on ideas gathered through workshops held with other visually impaired individuals and supporting organisations throughout the city, each performance has been devised to offer a totally different view of sight loss and its portrayal in modern day society. Performances are supported by audio descriptions (which can be downloaded to smartphones) and on-stage narrators.
