DISCOVERING THE NEW Welcome to our fourth season in this our first year as the UK City of Culture. By any measure it has been a revelatory time for the city and we want this last season to propel us into the years ahead. We started 2017 by celebrating the historic stories of this city and we want it to end by discovering the new.

Ambitious in its outlook, with a strong focus on technology, the work asks us to discover new stories, exercise our new-found voices and to ask big questions: in the case of our new commission from Jason Bruges, perhaps the biggest question of all, where do we go from here?

The season also underlines that not only have we celebrated Hull, we have also staged the UK’s first cultural quadrennial, and as such this season features some of our most celebrated contemporary artists, making urgent and world-class work. Maxine Peake, Blast Theory, Marshmallow Laser Feast, Martin Parr, Slung Low, James Graham, Tanika Gupta and the nominees for the Turner Prize 2017 to name just a few.

This year has been a collective act by a city, supported by partners and artists from across the world. From all of us in the Culture Company, thank you. Now, Tell The World! Martin Green, Director, Hull UK City of Culture 2017

We believe that everyone has the right to enjoy and be enriched by high quality artistic work that is culturally relevant to people and place.

Adapted by award-winning playwright Tanika Gupta (The Waiting Room, The Empress, Anita and Me) as a piece of ensemble storytelling, this modern family drama is a must-see piece of new theatre.

The sisters unite in horror to defend Directed by their father and what remains of his pension. Mark Babych. As Valentina’s dreams of Western prosperity begin to shatter, things take a darker turn. Nadezhda and her shaken family must face the ghosts of their past, confront their heritage and rediscover relationships.

The second half of our year of exceptional drama builds on the energy pulsing through our communities and intensifies the ambition to look beyond our boundaries. Bringing Marina Lewycka’s bestselling novel to the stage has long been a passion of mine and I’m excited to be working with playwright Tanika Gupta on the first ever stage adaptation of A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian. It’s a moving and timely story which will resonate with our audiences. Hull Truck Theatre is also working with playwright James Graham (pictured right) to create a new comedy that goes behind the scenes of Hull’s year as UK City of Culture 2017. James is well known for his razor-sharp observation (This House, The Vote), and has already begun his research. The play will premiere in January 2018.

As Hull’s cultural confidence has grown, so too has our audience’s appetite for imaginative storytelling. Support from the team at Hull 2017 has enabled us to increase the number, range and scale of our productions to satisfy this appetite. These include The Last Testament of Lillian Bilocca - a celebration of Hull’s heritage and one of its most inspirational daughters, written by Maxine Peake. We round off the year with a new adaptation of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, by Deborah McAndrew, set here in Hull. By Mark Babych, Artistic Director, Hull Truck Theatre

“Hull means a lot to me. I spent important years here growing up, and learning to write, so to be part of this incredible year is a real honour, especially at Hull Truck where I first accessed new work. There’s definitely a fun piece of art to be made here about the making of art.” James Graham, Playwright 15

The Kings of Hull Wed 27 Sep – Sat 7 Oct

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas Wed 18 – Sat 21 Oct

Hedda Gabler Mon 13 – Sat 18 Nov

One of Hull’s most irreverent exports, John Godber, brings his new production to the city.

The UK’s foremost narrative ballet company, Northern Ballet, transports us to Nazi Germany, where World War II rages and an unlikely friendship blossoms against the backdrop of devastation in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. Depicted through dance for the very first time this heartbreaking story is driven by themes of childhood curiosity, innocence and freedom.

Join the National Theatre in the heart of Hull as they present their acclaimed version of Ibsen’s classic masterpiece Hedda Gabler. A story of newlyweds just returning from their honeymoon who, rather than skipping joyously over the threshold, have seemingly already opened the door to a destructive relationship as Hedda tries desperately to control those around her.

The Kings of Hull follows three generations of Kings - a family bonded by love, but divided by rugby, a river and sibling rivalry - as they experience every up and down going, from the highs of a lottery win to a bottom bunk in Hull Prison.

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE? In our last major , commission for and as a challenging companion piece to Made in Hull, Jason Bruges Studio will shine an enquiring light through Hull’s Old Town. This ambitious intervention will produce a playful manipulation of light, responding to the city’s unique geometries and architecture, revealing unseen spaces and pinpointing unconsidered details.

The work, accompanied by new soundscapes, seeks to propel us into a bright and yet unknown future, engaging everyone in arguably the most important questions of the year for Hull and the nation: What kind of place do we wish to live in? What role should culture play? Where do we go from here?

OUR CITY. OUR STORY. Our amazing volunteers, our blue-coated ambassadors, have been busy telling the world how great Hull is since the very beginning. Writing their very own chapter of the city’s epic year, here three of our volunteers tell us about their experiences.

TREVOR Trevor Sylvestor who lives on Victoria Dock, admits to being a little hesitant applying to become a volunteer back in June 2016. However, his first shift on 1 January completely won him over and he now fits his day job as a designer around his volunteering shifts. Trevor explained: “Some people have a gap year, well I’m calling this my culture year.

54

Looking for a positive way to contribute to her new city, she immediately signed up to become a Hull 2017 volunteer – a once in a lifetime opportunity which she says she has felt truly honoured to be part of. Syeda explained: ”My volunteering journey has been quite magical so far, every opportunity has been a unique learning experience, every day is like an adventure, some days I am acting in a film, others I am an art gallery invigilator. I believe that Hull should be given the title UK City of Culture permanently.”

- JAN

MAURICE Life-long Hessle Roader Maurice Houlden, a retired chef, was inspired to become a volunteer after watching Made in Hull. Keen to be part of the action, he said: “Being a volunteer has given me the courage and knowledge to speak to people who I never would have spoken to before. “It’s also reignited my musical passion and I’ve even been inspired to write a piece of music motivated by being a Hull 2017 volunteer.” All three volunteers plan to continue their efforts in 2018 and beyond.

“Being a volunteer has firmly pushed me outside my comfort zone, however the uniform gives you confidence, people trust and respect you, and I’ve learnt that I’m actually quite good in a public facing role, skills I never thought I had.”

UNLEASHING CREATIVITY

Our year of unbounded learning opportunities culminates in LIMITLESS.

Unleashing creativity in the classroom and taking risks never seen before, this joyful and colourful celebration brings together performances, films, poetry, art exhibitions and discussions, showing that there really is no limit to what young people can achieve. 27 Nov – 10 Dec

Building a powerful work of art, the city’s youngest residents create an impressive installation featuring 16,000 hand-made clay bricks. Clay is a material at the heart of the city of Hull. The city was built on clay and its buildings made from bricks from surrounding clay pits. Each of the 16,000 bricks in this installation bears the unique marks of the young person who made it and offers a platform for every child under five from nurseries, schools and other early years settings to explore their creativity. 2 Oct – 5 Nov Fruit Market hull2017.co.uk/ sixteenthousand

FESTIVE FAMILY FAVOURITES ‘Tis the season to be jolly and the region’s jam-packed festive programme is set to make the merriment easy to come by.

Hull New Theatre’s Peter Pan production also gets a fitting twist for the UK City of Culture year, as the journey to Neverland leaves from the Darling family’s new home in Hull. In the first panto to grace Hull New Theatre’s stage since its multi-million pound refurbishment, the venue welcomes an all-star cast that includes singer and TV personality Darren Day, Emmerdale star Charlie Hardwick and Coach Trip’s legendary host, Brendan Sherrin.

Hull Truck Theatre kicks things off, bringing the Ghost of Christmas Past bang up-to-date as they put their own spin on the Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol. Pioneers of the alternative panto, Middle Child, return with their trademark chaotic comedy. A performance as unmissable as it is unorthodox, this time it’s Cinderella getting the lairy-tale makeover, with raucous live music and the messiest mess scene in the country making Früit the perfect place to let kids unleash their energy.

Meanwhile, further afield, Bridlington Spa takes audiences on a magical Christmas carpet ride in Aladdin, with a little help from Strictly Come Dancing pro Robin Windsor.

ACCESS FOR ALL During the most vibrant display of art and culture Hull has ever seen is coming to life. With events taking place in every corner of the city, in public spaces and historic old buildings, we want to make it possible for everyone to have the opportunity to access the arts. We will support our creative partners, contractors and members of the wider community to join us in this effort.

There will be a range of assisted performances across each season.

HOW TO BOOK We’ve created the ultimate What’s On guide .co.uk to help you at hull find jaw-dropping cultural experiences. Here you can buy tickets for events and activities taking place during our final season, Tell The World, as well as discover the latest news, features and behind-the-scenes content.

If you have purchased your ticket via our website and need help, check the online help pages provided at hull2017.co.uk or contact the Hull 2017 Box Office via boxoffice@hull2017.co.uk

Hull 2017's website acts as a central box office for the purchase of tickets for bookings across the city, and sells tickets on behalf of key cultural partners.

Sign up online at hull2017.co.uk to create your account and subscribe to receive regular updates.

Please do not go direct to venues with enquiries for tickets purchased via the site as they will redirect you back to us.

If you do not have access to the internet, visit your local library or customer service centre, where you will be able to access it free of charge. For more information about the age appropriateness of an event, click on the relevant page on our website.

TELL THE HULL WORLD UK CITY OCT OF CULTURE - JAN

I always knew Hull would be a magnificent and brilliant UK City of Culture. But I never knew just how magnificent and brilliant 2017 would be. The city has embraced this year with emotion, enthusiasm and energy. All of Hull’s children and young people have been engaged. We have had volunteers across the city, art everywhere, visitors from across the world, and stunning critical acclaim on a national and international basis. Our wonderful arts institutions have been boosted and we have new delights across the city. I would like to say thank you – to our partners and the individuals and groups who have worked so hard to make this year the triumph it has been. We could not have done it without you.

Thank you to the brilliant trustees of the Board. You have given your time and your wisdom freely to help the year run smoothly. Thank you to the DCMS and the Independent Advisory Panel chaired by Phil Redmond, for having the vision to choose Hull. Thanks also to our creative partners. Through you, and the indefatigable Hull 2017 team, we have been able to deliver a terrific, wide reaching and engaging programme. Thanks to Hull City Council. You have been there, cheering us on, throughout. As for our volunteers, you have been out there, greeting people with the crucial combination of broad smiles and accurate information, so that everyone can get the most out of 2017. You are all amazing.

A huge thank you to all our funding partners, not only for their generosity, but also their commitment and confidence in us. You have made this epic year possible. The final accolade goes to you. The people of Hull and the many visitors to our great city. Thank you for being part of the story. Our story. Everyone back to ours! Rosie Millard, Chair, Board of Trustees, Hull UK City of Culture 2017
