DISCOVERING THE NEW Welcome to our fourth season in this our first year as the UK City of Culture. By any measure it has been a revelatory time for the city and we want this last season to propel us into the years ahead. We started 2017 by celebrating the historic stories of this city and we want it to end by discovering the new.

Ambitious in its outlook, with a strong focus on technology, the work asks us to discover new stories, exercise our new-found voices and to ask big questions: in the case of our new commission from Jason Bruges, perhaps the biggest question of all, where do we go from here?

The season also underlines that not only have we celebrated Hull, we have also staged the UK’s first cultural quadrennial, and as such this season features some of our most celebrated contemporary artists, making urgent and world-class work. Maxine Peake, Blast Theory, Marshmallow Laser Feast, Martin Parr, Slung Low, James Graham, Tanika Gupta and the nominees for the Turner Prize 2017 to name just a few.

A new artwork experience inspired by the iconic form of The Deep.

FROGMAN The Great Barrier Reef, 1995. Meera is 11. It’s her first sleepover. Strawberry Dunkaroos and Sega Mega Drive descends into torch-lit storytelling from sleeping bags. Outside over the reef, the Frogman hovers, looking for traces of a missing child. Time is running out. A coming-of-age, supernatural thriller, this is a groundbreaking world first, experienced in VR headsets. In association with Brisbane Powerhouse.

Phone boxes ring inviting you to answer. At the end of the line, a voice asks who you are, and a character from 2097 asks for your help. 2097 is a unique co-production between the two powerhouses of Hull 2017 and Aarhus 2017. It has been informed and inspired by residents in both cities and experts from a broad range of backgrounds including climate change, smart cities and community activism.

HUMBER MOUTH LITERATURE FESTIVAL Writer and political commentator Will Self heads up seven days of amazing authors, poets, spoken word artists and musicians as Hull’s own literature festival celebrates its 25th anniversary.

and album, Songs from the Novel Greatest Hits; a panel discussion with the Royal Society Insight Investment Science Book Prize; and prolific comedian Sara Pascoe on her book Animal.

Other highlights this year include: an exploration of world poets with Bloodaxe Books founder and editor Neil Astley; Versions of Us author Laura Barnett and Mercury-nominated singer-songwriter Kathryn Williams discussing their collaborative novel

There’s also an innovative new digital project called How Was Your Day? which gathers experiences of everyday life across Hull’s twin cities, using conventional and digital platforms to explore Hull as the gateway to Europe and the world.

And of course, the return of the extensive children’s programme which this year features Carnegie Medal winner Sally Gardner, author and illustrator Leigh Hodgkinson and master of fabulous foolery, Jarvis.

The second half of our year of exceptional drama builds on the energy pulsing through our communities and intensifies the ambition to look beyond our boundaries. Bringing Marina Lewycka’s bestselling novel to the stage has long been a passion of mine and I’m excited to be working with playwright Tanika Gupta on the first ever stage adaptation of A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian. It’s a moving and timely story which will resonate with our audiences. Hull Truck Theatre is also working with playwright James Graham (pictured right) to create a new comedy that goes behind the scenes of Hull’s year as UK City of Culture 2017. James is well known for his razor-sharp observation (This House, The Vote), and has already begun his research. The play will premiere in January 2018.

As Hull’s cultural confidence has grown, so too has our audience’s appetite for imaginative storytelling. Support from the team at Hull 2017 has enabled us to increase the number, range and scale of our productions to satisfy this appetite. These include The Last Testament of Lillian Bilocca - a celebration of Hull’s heritage and one of its most inspirational daughters, written by Maxine Peake. Part Four: New World The world is begun again, anew. The wave has struck. The world as we know it has ended. Gloriana, the girl from the sea, is missing. Can the shattered survivors of the flood build a new world?

TURNER PRIZE Turner Prize, one of the world’s most renowned art prizes, is awarded by Tate to an artist who has exhibited outstanding work in the previous year. The four shortlisted will artists for exhibit their work at Ferens Art Gallery, Hull, from September with the overall winner announced in early December. Through genres such as portraiture, landscape and still life, the four artists explore how art is able to respond to political and social upheaval.

Hurvin Anderson’s paintings encompass both portraiture and landscape to distil a sense of place, with works that shift between representation and reality. Andrea Büttner’s multifaceted work, which operates across print, installation and painting, explore the language of poverty and value. Lubaina Himid’s work references the political power of graphic language, with decorative motifs often used to confront the sense of invisibility felt by the people of the African Diaspora. .co.uk

Rosalind Nashashibi uses time in film to build a steady yet often repetitive picture of everyday experience, through footage that combines movement and stillness.

One of Hull’s most irreverent exports, John Godber, brings his new production to the city.

The UK’s foremost narrative ballet company, Northern Ballet, transports us to Nazi Germany, where World War II rages and an unlikely friendship blossoms against the backdrop of devastation in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. Depicted through dance for the very first time this heartbreaking story is driven by themes of childhood curiosity, innocence and freedom.

Join the National Theatre in the heart of Hull as they present their acclaimed version of Ibsen’s classic masterpiece Hedda Gabler. A story of newlyweds just returning from their honeymoon who, rather than skipping joyously over the threshold, have seemingly already opened the door to a destructive relationship as Hedda tries desperately to control those around her.

The Kings of Hull follows three generations of Kings - a family bonded by love, but divided by rugby, a river and sibling rivalry - as they experience every up and down going, from the highs of a lottery win to a bottom bunk in Hull Prison.

OUR CITY. OUR STORY. Our amazing volunteers, our blue-coated ambassadors, have been busy telling the world how great Hull is since the very beginning. Writing their very own chapter of the city’s epic year, here three of our volunteers tell us about their experiences.

TREVOR Trevor Sylvestor who lives on Victoria Dock, admits to being a little hesitant applying to become a volunteer back in June 2016. However, his first shift on 1 January completely won him over and he now fits his day job as a designer around his volunteering shifts. Trevor explained: “Some people have a gap year, well I’m calling this my culture year.

Looking for a positive way to contribute to her new city, she immediately signed up to become a Hull 2017 volunteer – a once in a lifetime opportunity which she says she has felt truly honoured to be part of. Syeda explained: ”My volunteering journey has been quite magical so far, every opportunity has been a unique learning experience, every day is like an adventure, some days I am acting in a film, others I am an art gallery invigilator. I believe that Hull should be given the title UK City of Culture permanently.”

MAURICE Life-long Hessle Roader Maurice Houlden, a retired chef, was inspired to become a volunteer after watching Made in Hull. Keen to be part of the action, he said: “Being a volunteer has given me the courage and knowledge to speak to people who I never would have spoken to before. “It’s also reignited my musical passion and I’ve even been inspired to write a piece of music motivated by being a Hull 2017 volunteer.” All three volunteers plan to continue their efforts in 2018 and beyond.

Building a powerful work of art, the city’s youngest residents create an impressive installation featuring 16,000 hand-made clay bricks. Clay is a material at the heart of the city of Hull. The city was built on clay and its buildings made from bricks from surrounding clay pits. FESTIVE FAMILY FAVOURITES ‘Tis the season to be jolly and the region’s jam-packed festive programme is set to make the merriment easy to come by.

Hull New Theatre’s Peter Pan production also gets a fitting twist for the UK City of Culture year, as the journey to Neverland leaves from the Darling family’s new home in Hull. In the first panto to grace Hull New Theatre’s stage since its multi-million pound refurbishment, the venue welcomes an all-star cast that includes singer and TV personality Darren Day, Emmerdale star Charlie Hardwick and Coach Trip’s legendary host, Brendan Sherrin.

Hull Truck Theatre kicks things off, bringing the Ghost of Christmas Past bang up-to-date as they put their own spin on the Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol. Pioneers of the alternative panto, Middle Child, return with their trademark chaotic comedy. A performance as unmissable as it is unorthodox, this time it’s Cinderella getting the lairy-tale makeover, with raucous live music and the messiest mess scene in the country making Früit the perfect place to let kids unleash their energy.

Meanwhile, further afield, Bridlington Spa takes audiences on a magical Christmas carpet ride in Aladdin, with a little help from Strictly Come Dancing pro Robin Windsor.

I always knew Hull would be a magnificent and brilliant UK City of Culture. But I never knew just how magnificent and brilliant 2017 would be. The city has embraced this year with emotion, enthusiasm and energy. All of Hull’s children and young people have been engaged. We have had volunteers across the city, art everywhere, visitors from across the world, and stunning critical acclaim on a national and international basis. Our wonderful arts institutions have been boosted and we have new delights across the city. I would like to say thank you – to our partners and the individuals and groups who have worked so hard to make this year the triumph it has been. We could not have done it without you.
