EXPLORING FREEDOM AS NEVER BEFORE
WHAT’S ON DIARY: FREEDOM
Hull is a place of big skies, big vistas and an abiding sense of freedom. Which comes not only from its stunning geography of course, but from the legacy of anti-slavery campaigner and MP William Wilberforce, who was born in the city in 1759. It comes from the radical independence of the place, and also the wealth of artists over the years who have come to work and freely flourish here.
The city will continue to welcome in the world with the energy, inclusion and panache we showed right from the start, culminating in September’s Freedom Festival, where what it is to be free will be expressed across a spectacular festival weekend.
This summer, the concept of ‘freedom’ in all its many forms will be explored across Hull as never before, with epic concerts, incredible exhibitions and jaw-dropping pieces of theatre.

CELEBRATING 0 YEARS This year is a very important one for Freedom Festival. Not only are we part of Hull 2017 and all the wonderful elements that brings, but this year Hull’s international arts festival returns to celebrate its tenth anniversary.
Freedom Festival is an event that the people of Hull – and beyond – have well and truly taken to their hearts over the last decade. It has evolved hugely since its inception, growing out of bicentenary commemorations in Hull in 2007 of William Wilberforce’s Act of Parliament, which led to the abolition of the slave trade in the British Empire. In recent years, the ambitions of Freedom Festival Arts Trust (the independent charity behind the festival) have begun to establish it as one of the UK’s most interesting and diverse arts festivals.
A large scale outdoor arts event that is spectacular, beautiful, surprising and has so many art forms represented: it’s musical, it’s entertaining and at times challenging, it resonates with stories of the city, plays with public space and, crucially, has a very real and pertinent human theme woven through it which explores notions of freedom and emancipation – both historically and in the modern times we live in. Played out on city centre streets, with the heritage and architecture of Hull as the stage, Freedom Festival is never afraid to push boundaries with art and themes of freedom.
It aims to get audiences talking, debating and celebrating, always with something for everyone – young and old – to enjoy. Don’t miss what promises to be a very special 10th anniversary edition this September.

Deep within a hidden office complex in the city centre, a mysterious new Korean technology company is taking root…. but where are the employees from and why are they here?
ONE DAY, MAYBE
ONE DAY, MAYBE conjures a kaleidoscopic dreamscape where live performance, installation and pioneering technology combine to create a vividly dystopian vision of a world spinning thrillingly out of control. dreamthinkspeak are global pioneers of site responsive performance. Previously they have taken over a paper factory in Moscow, the Old Treasury Building in Perth, Australia and an underground abattoir in Clerkenwell to create extraordinary and unforgettable audience journeys. ONE DAY, MAYBE is the company’s most technically ambitious production to date. Originally commissioned and produced by Asian Culture Complex, The Museum of Art, Kochi, 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, AsiaNow and dreamthinkspeak. 1 Sep – 1 Oct To be revealed hull2017.co.uk/ onedaymaybe Ticketed S I T E - S P E C I F IC Photo: © Nae Fukata

licensed bars, and spaces for business, community and social events. The theatre has certainly come a long way since opening in 1939, when founder Peppino Santangelo’s persistent determination ensured that the show would definitely go on and the venue survived the Second World War.
Two decades on, an intervention from Hull City Council saved it from becoming a bingo hall, marking the next stage of its journey to becoming a key player in the UK performing arts scene. The theatre has played host to some of the best awardwinning productions over the years and is set to take centre stage once more.

In 1982, Michael K Meyers, Professor of Fine Art at Chicago Art Institute, came to teach at Hull School of Art and Design. An audio visual installation he created during that period, based on interviews with Hull residents, was exhibited at Ferens Art Gallery and broadcast on BBC Radio 4’s Pick of the Week programme. Named ‘The Audio Encyclopedia of Personal Knowledge’, the project asked Hull residents the question “what do you know?”
hull2017.co.uk/ hulltrinity
In 2017, 35 years on, Michael will return to Hull to continue his ongoing enquiry. Working in partnership with BBC Radio Humberside, BBC Look North, Hull Daily Mail and students from Hull School of Art and Design, he will track down some of those who featured in his original work and ask them “what do you know now?”. Current residents of Hull will also be asked to participate for the first time.
From these collective responses, a new installation based on the audio, video and images Michael collects will be exhibited at Hull School of Art and Design during our final season. Until 31 Oct Hull School of Art and Design hull2017.co.uk/ whatdoyouknow Free OTHER

DON’T MISS HULL’S MUSEUMS QUARTER
Hull’s museums give any major city a run for its money. I’m not the only one who thinks so: they were named in the UK’s Top 10 free attractions by Guardian readers. If you’ve not yet paid them a visit, what are you waiting for? The majority of our museums can be found on High Street in the Old Town. Here, the Museums Quarter features the Streetlife Museum of Transport, where you can board a tram and walk down a 1940s high street, as well as the Hull and East Riding Museum, for a look at the stunning Roman mosaics. There’s also Wilberforce House, which charts the history of slavery and its abolition, and now includes the Virtual Wilberforce experience, featuring digital characterisations of Hull’s famous son.

TURNER PRIZE From September, Hull will host one of the art world’s most prestigious awards, the Turner Prize. The exhibition of the four shortlisted artists’ work will be held at the Ferens Art Gallery until January 8, and will be free to the public. Established in 1984, the prize, awarded by Tate, aims to grow awareness and interest in contemporary art. And as the UK’s most publicised arts award, it certainly gets people talking.
From Damien Hirst’s cows in formaldehyde to Anthea Hamilton’s 16ft sculpture of a bare bottom, the prize’s provocative exhibits always generate debate – often coming back to the same question: “but is it art?”
As ever, the Turner Prize generates more questions than answers - a good thing, surely, when it comes to art and culture. We hope you’ll join us at the Ferens from September and add to the debate.
Following Helen Marten’s 2016 win for her complex sculptural work, the contemporary art world awaits the announcement of the 2017 shortlist and overall winner. Will sculpture continue to dominate? Will we see a return to traditional painting?
