Time with your doctor can be limited these days. Most primary care physicians see about 20 a day and spend on average 18 minutes with a patient during a typical visit. But with some preparation and planning, you can maximize time with your healthcare provider and get more out of your appointment.

Explore Telehealth Options

Many healthcare providers have begun offering more telehealth options to address patient needs. When contacting your healthcare provider, find out if such telehealth options as virtual appointments through online videoconferencing or phone calls are available and if they are a good fit for your particular health situation.

Share Medical Records and Test Results Before Your Visit

By making sure your doctor has your previous diagnostic work prior to your visit, your healthcare provider has the opportunity to gain important background information about your medical situation before consulting with you.

Arrive Early but Be Prepared to Wait

Arriving about 15 to 20 minutes before your in-person appointment will give you adequate time to fill out paperwork, use the restroom and take care of other check-in items. By getting to the appointment early, you ensure your actual appointment time with your healthcare provider is not taken up with these other tasks. Even if you arrive early, you may still have to wait to see your doctor, so allot yourself plenty of time for the appointment.

Don’t Go Alone

Having a friend, loved one or hired advocate with you during an office visit gives you another set of eyes and ears. Ask your companion to take notes or consider asking your health care provider if he or she is OK with you making an audio recording of the visit for your future reference. Your appointment buddy can be a good sounding board and also may be able to offer insight to the doctor about any health issues you are having.

Take a List of Your Medicines and Supplements

Rather than relying on memory, take a list of your prescription and over-the-counter medications, supplements, vitamins, herbs and nutraceuticals

and their dosages. Include how frequently you take them. Bring them in their prescription bottles or store packaging if that’s easier for you. By accurately sharing with your medical provider what medications and supplements you are taking and how much and how frequently you are taking them, you reduce the chances of negative drug interactions.

Summarize Your Medical History

Have in hand a summary of your allergies, surgeries, vaccinations, family medical history and diagnosed conditions.

Be Specific and Bring a Written List of Your Medical Concerns

Before your visit, write down your health concerns, questions and symptoms and prioritize them in order of their importance to you. Invite input from your loved ones. Take three copies to your appointment – one for you, one for your physician and one for your health advocate.

Clarify Your Doctor’s Recommendations

Ask questions, repeat back what your doctor says and ask for written details about your treatment plan on paper or through your healthcare provider’s secure online patient portal if one is available. Find out if there are warning signs you need to watch for with your condition and possible medication side effects and interactions. Clarify next steps about your treatment and find out the best way to reach your physician before, during and after regular office hours if you have questions or concerns.

A primary care provider (PCP) is a doctor, physician assistant or nurse practitioner who serves as your main health care provider for non-emergency needs, routine screenings and wellness visits. Your doctor may be a doctor of medicine (M.D.) or a doctor of osteopathic medicine (D.O.). Both are licensed physicians, though they receive slightly different training. Advanced practice providers, such as nurse practitioners (NP) and physician assistants (PA), can also serve as primary care providers and are trained in diagnosing and treating medical issues.

Why do you need a PCP?

It is a good idea to have an established primary care provider before you experience health issues. That way, if you notice unusual symptoms, you have someone who knows your medical history and can provide treatment or make a referral to a specialist. However, if you don’t currently have a primary care provider and have a non-emergency medical issue, it is best to go to urgent care. Many urgent care centers can refer you to a primary care provider for follow-up care.

What does a PCP do?

Provide preventive care. Your PCP can guide you in adopting healthy lifestyle changes – such as diet, exercise, sleep, stress management and smoking cessation – that improve your overall health. He or she can also provide your annual physical and recommend age-appropriate screenings, such as a colonoscopy or mammogram.

Ideally, you should see your primary care provider once a year for a wellness visit or annual physical. If you have any non-emergency health concerns throughout the year, you have someone you with whom you can schedule an appointment.

Diagnose and treat common

health issues.

Your primary care provider can address many common health concerns, such as a respiratory illness, sore throat, head ache, urinary infection and back pain. A PCP can prescribe medications for acute and chronic conditions as needed.

Manage chronic health conditions.

Your PCP can help manage ongoing medical concerns like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes and depression. They also

Your PCP can also help coordinate your care if you see multiple specialists. For example, if you have diabetes and heart disease, you may need to see an endocrinologist and cardiologist in addition to your primary care provider.

Help you navigate care transitions. A PCP can also provide support as you experience transitions in your health care, such as when you go home after a hospital stay or enter rehabilitation after surgery.

Dr. Hoffert & Red Maple Dental Team Perform Complex Full-Mouth Restorations

Dr. Hoffert and her team provide patients with true fullmouth restorations. They perform complex dental implants and related procedures using the highest quality tools and restorations. They can handle anything from a routine single dental implant and restoration up to surgical removal of all dentition, bone reductions, bone grafts, ridge splits and sinus grafting as required for a full-arch restoration. Their patients have access to many levels of anxiety control and anesthesia from basic numbing agents all the way up to propofol IV sedation administered by a certified anesthesiologist for patients with complicated medical conditions.

The Process

Dr. Hoffert uses a “restoration driven” process. She begins with the final result in mind and works back to the beginning. She’ll place the implant where it best holds the restoration, even if that isn’t the easiest place to put it. She takes a CT scan of her patients to generate a highly accurate 3D map of their entire mouth, and computer software allows her to “try in” different implants and restorations digitally to find the combination the generates the best result for the patient. Implant placement must precisely balance position in the bone with the angles and positions of the final restorations to be ready for a lifetime of use under extreme loads. Use of digital technology and being the decision maker for both implant and restoration ensures there is no guesswork.

When it is time to place the implants, Dr. Hoffert uses a 3D printed guide when possible to make sure the implant goes in at precisely the right angle and depth. To avoid delays in this process, Red Maple has all equipment needed to plan, model, and 3D print implant guides on site.

Dr. Hoffert decides when the implant is ready to be loaded with the final restoration; that could be on the same day or a time in the near future. She finishes the case by installing a custom prosthesis produced in partnership with outstanding local labs; she will not use an overseas lab or discount supplier.

Dental Implant Consultation

A consultation with a dentist is required to determine if a patient is eligible for one or more dental implants. Implants require a person with good oral health and enough healthy bone structure to support them. If you are considering dental implants, Dr. Hoffert and Red Maple Dental can take you through the entire process at their office just north of downtown Asheville.

Advanced Technology

The team spends significant time on continuing education. Their training allows them to utilize the most modern techniques along with state-of-the-art materials and technologies. The office has a modern CT scanner, 3D printer, digital impression cameras, and crown milling and firing equipment on site. They use only implants with the highest success rates.

UNETE is a non-profit organization with the mission to create inclusive spaces and programs that promote and facilitate access to community resources for everyone. UNETE’s mission, expertise, and skills equip them to make immediate and lasting impacts in lives across Western North Carolina. They are training the next generation of trusted multicultural and multilingual Community Health Workers (CHW) that will address the comprehensive social dynamics of health.

As a women and people of color led organization sustained by two decades of community grassroots services, they have focused in addressing determinants of health, minimizing the impact of ACES, and tapping into the wisdom and resilience of the community. UNETE provides services and resources tailored to meet the needs of WNC individuals and families. UNETE embraces the CHWs model as one of the best tools to promote equity.

The CHW teams understand and celebrate the diversity of NC communities. UNETE is intentionally allocating efforts to serve historically marginalized and difficult to reach communities. All services are provided recognizing the different needs according to race, ethnicity, language barriers, as well as the positive contributions every individual makes to society.

As it is difficult to accomplish true growth without equitable access to health, education, and community resources, they believe in a comprehensive holistic approach.
