THINGS TO BUY WHEN MOVING INTO YOUR NEW HOME

New locks. Whether you choose to get brandnew locks or have a locksmith re-key the current ones, it’s important to have these changed. When moving into a new home, there’s really no telling how many copies of the house keys have been made. Another option? Install electric passcode locks. This way, you won’t need a key to enter the house, and no one will have your passcode. A garage keypad. A garage keypad is extremely handy to have and gives you another way to enter your house when you don’t want to have keys, or simply need to get into the garage easily. Have your local garage door installer or electrician wire it up. An alarm service. Some homes are wired with alarm systems and simply need to be re-activated with your account information. However, if you move into a new house and want an extra layer of security quickly, opt for a wireless service. These can be set up and secure in a snap. A new dryer hose. One of the most common sources of house fires is the dryer hose. If your new home has one left from the previous owners or you’re bringing your own, consider getting a new one so you’re assured it doesn’t have holes, tears or any buildup that can cause fires. Air filters. Install new, high-quality air filters when you move in. This allows you to get a fresh

breath of air and not recirculate the previous owner’s air. Plus you just don’t know when they were last changed. Afterward, your move-in date can be the date that you change them monthly. New cleaning supplies. It’s always nice to start fresh at a new home with a new mop, broom and other cleaning supplies. New toilet seats. It may seem somehow changing the toilet seats to prefer, such as one-touch closing, is a to feel clean and fresh from day one of

silly, but ones you nice way move in.

Fire safety items. If the home you move into doesn’t have a fire extinguisher, this is a great time to install a new one or replace an existing one. Next, replace all the batteries in smoke detectors so you know you’re protected. A first-aid kit. If your home doesn’t have a first-aid kit or you didn’t move one from your old house, start safe with a new one that’s fully stocked with fresh supplies. Extra lighting. While you’re stocking up on light bulbs, don’t forget to add a rechargeable flashlight and a set of nightlights. Because you’ll be in a new house, strategically placed nightlights will help you navigate in your new house if you get up in the night; flashlights at the ready will prove useful should the electricity go out.

UPDATE YOUR GARAGE TO

BOOST CURB APPEAL

Want to make your home stand out from the others in your neighborhood? Updating your garage can be a simple way to accomplish this while boosting curb appeal at the same time. TRY A NEW COLOR One option to make your home’s garage door draw attention is to use a unique color. You have to be careful here, because a color that’s too odd could actually be a drawback. Consider the overall look of your home and choose a color that’ll complement your home’s architecture while still being different from the other homes in the neighborhood. CHOOSE A UNIQUE MATERIAL Are all the doors in your neighborhood metal or vinyl? Consider upgrading to a real wood door. Wood doors give a home character and a classic look, and they can be an asset to your home’s curb appeal. If you don’t want to spend more for a real wood door, consider a metal or vinyl door that is finished to look like wood. ADD A UNIQUE DESIGN Most garage doors look very similar. Four rows of paneling, often decorated with squares and maybe a row of windows at the top, is fairly standard. Mix this up a bit, and your home will stand out. Use a flush style or long panel door. If you have the budget and

the time, consider redoing the door and the frame to add some curves. Arched garage doors instantly grab attention and attract interest in the home. If your home doesn’t give you room for arches, get creative with the four-panel look. Use molding or glass to add a unique design to this standard shape. Vertical paneling and arched windows can also make the door stand out, without changing its overall shape. Paint the panels to match your siding and the trim to match the house’s trim for a distinctive, yet classic look. UPGRADE THE FINISHING TOUCHES From the handle to the glass in the windows, the finishing touches on your garage door can be the final piece of the puzzle as you try to make it stand out. Wrought-iron decorative touches on the panels can add the distinction you need. Even changing the lighting near your garage door can make a difference. Upgrade these small touches and give your garage door some extra pizzazz. Updating your garage door can be a valuable way to make your home look distinctive and increase its curb appeal. If you’re thinking about selling your home in the near future, consider making this change now to improve your selling experience.

House Cleaning Tips to Steal From the Pros When it comes to spring cleaning, or housekeeping any time of the year, nobody knows how to make it more efficient than professional home and hotel cleaners. Try these tips from the pros in your own home.

Stock up on gloves and microfiber cloths. Rubber gloves can help you through a variety of messy tasks without soaking your hands in water or chemicals. Microfiber cloths can be used wet for kitchen and bath cleaning, or dry for thorough dusting. Simplify your cleaning products. You should not need more than three or four products, including a mix of vinegar and water in a spray bottle, to tackle every cleaning job in every room of your house. Keep cleaning tools handy. Having products and rags in a moveable carry-case, and brooms and a vacuum in a central spot, saves time and energy. In a two-story home, keep a second vacuum upstairs for quick and easy pick-ups. Clean the kitchen every day that you cook. Not the whole kitchen, but the range, the counters to the side of it, the refrigerator handle and the sink. New kitchen dirt is easy to clean, but old kitchen dirt can harden into rock.

Don’t get bogged down with clutter. Spend some time once or twice a month sorting and putting clutter where it belongs. In between, just pick up those light piles of mail and magazines and clean under and around them. Keep your pets brushed. It will minimize the time you spend dusting and vacuuming. Have a cleaning path. Whether it’s back of the house to the front, or tougher rooms first, know the route you will take. In any case, clean from the top down, ceilings first, so floors that catch the dust and debris are the last to be swept and/ or vacuumed. Start with the worst challenge in a room. In the kitchen, it’s the range. In the bathroom, it’s the shower. In the dining room, it may be the chandelier. Once you complete the main challenge, the rest of the room is easy.

THE DOS & DON’TS OF DRAIN MAINTENANCE

Does one of your drains always seem to clog? Can’t figure out the best way to keep your pipes clear? Four Seasons Plumbing offers the following guidelines for proper drain maintenance.

“A lot of our clients are worried about what they can and cannot put down their drains,” says Max Rose, owner of Four Seasons Plumbing. “The truth is—excluding grease, oils and chemicals—a properly designed and installed system will take just about anything you can fit down the drain. If you are experiencing issues with normal use, I recommend having a plumbing professional do an inspection, but in the meantime here are some dos and don’ts you can follow.” Do use a drain guard.

Do flush with hot water.

Whether it’s in the kitchen sink or the bathtub, a drain guard can catch the bigger pieces of debris that tend to cause clogs.

Periodically fill the tub and/or kitchen sink about halfway with hot water and pull the plug. This will move the hot water down the plumbing and help clear lingering debris.

Don’t flush everything. Body waste and toilet paper are the only things that should be flushed. Paper towels, cotton balls and even “flushable” wipes should not be disposed of in the toilet.

Do use a bacteria waste eliminator for preventative maintenance.

Don’t use commercial drain cleaners. Store-bought drain cleaners contain caustic chemicals that can be harmful to both your health and your plumbing. These cleaners may help remedy a clogged or slow-draining sink or tub, but it can erode pipes in the process.

Bacteria and enzyme drain additives are safe, effective and great for septic systems.

Don’t pour grease or fat down drains. It may go down the drain as a liquid, but once it cools off, these fats solidify, causing blockages in pipes. It’s best to wait until the grease or oil has cooled into a solid and then dispose of it in the trash.

Following these tips can help keep your drain and pipes clear and working well. But should you need drain repair, or even a check up on them, contact your trusted plumber today!

Home HOW TO GIVE YOUR

MORE CHARACTER

W

hen you look around your home and then compare it to a design magazine, you may be wondering what exactly is that unique element that makes the rooms on those pages look so appealing. The answer? Character. Homes whose design have character built in seem so naturally attractive, but finding the elements of character isn’t always obvious. Adding some character-building charm to your home can be done easily with some simple projects around the house.

START AT THE ENTRANCE One of the first areas to build character in your home is where it makes its first impression. Your foyer is a perfect place to add dimension and interest, because the room is small and even small changes will be noticeable. Give the room top-to-bottom appeal by adding a unique treatment on the ceiling. Start with crown molding to define your foyer, and then fill in the ceiling area with a vibrant color that takes its cue from the entry rug. This is a terrific way to create a room that’s layered in interest from the floor to the ceiling.

GO NATURAL Natural elements bring a sense of charm to any room. A quick way to add a touch of elegance is to install marble threshold breaks. Often found in pricey hotel rooms, a marble threshold makes a simple statement that’s both natural and stylish. Use these at any transition areas, such as from the bathroom to the bedroom, or where wood changes to tile floors or carpet. Another easy change is with a wicker or natural lighting fixture. These add all kinds of texture and character – something all designers love – and make fast decorating swaps that are inexpensive to boot. A textured rug in a natural fiber like sisal adds character and dimension.

TRIM, PLEASE Like molding in the foyer, trim can dress up any room in the house. If you have windows without trim, simple casement molding will instantly spruce them up. The same is true of bland bathroom mirrors. Look at the many online DIY projects for trimming out bland builder bathroom mirrors. Your bathroom will look much better, and stylish. Simple trim added to flat doors and cabinet doors also adds elegance and interest quickly and inexpensively.

MIX AND MATCH MATERIALS Lots of new construction today uses salvaged brick because of the character antique bricks add to a project. A simpler way is to use faux brick panels. These can be added to a wall behind a sofa or a bed to give your space a big texture bump while building in loads of character. In the kitchen, add brick panels for a quick backsplash with interest. Pressed tin is another terrific way to make a character-building statement. These tin tiles are fast and easy to cut, install and can be put on the ceiling, on a backsplash or under chair rail trim for wainscot treatment with texture. ©2022 Kathryn Weber. 4 ITEMS YOU MAY WANT TO INSURE BEFORE MOVING

Even when everything goes according to plan, moving is pretty much guaranteed to be a stressful process. If something gets lost or damaged, however, it’s only going to get worse. That’s why it’s important to make sure that certain luxury items are insured before they’re packed and transported to your new home. While homeowners insurance will usually cover you in the event of a break-in or natural disaster, such as a fire or hurricane, you could still be liable for anything that happens while moving. Moving companies, on the other hand, can be held liable to replace or fix a damaged item if you purchase full-value protection, though you’re not guaranteed to receive full compensation because you’re usually only covered up to a certain amount. For items of extraordinary value, which are defined as being worth more than $100 per pound, it can be a good idea to purchase separate insurance to cover you while moving. Here are a few items that luxury homeowners frequently opt to add coverage to.

JEWELRY

ARTWORK AND ANTIQUES

TECHNOLOGY

For a valuable art collection, it’s quite common to purchase property insurance in addition to your homeowners policy. Even if you’ve already done this, though, you’ll want to check and see if it covers moving, as it’s entirely possible that damage that occurs in the back of a truck is not included.

A state-of-the-art home entertainment setup, complete with an ultra-high-definition television and high-fidelity audio system, can easily set you back tens of thousands of dollars. These items are far from indestructible, but they are replaceable. With insurance, you can enjoy peace of mind should anything happen en route to your new abode.

Perhaps the easiest item to “mysteriously disappear,” it’s always important to take proper precautions with your jewelry collection when moving. Be sure to have highvalue pieces appraised beforehand and, for items that are truly irreplaceable, you may want to hire a special jewelry shipping service, or carry it with you.

WINE All it takes is a bump in the road or a slam on the brakes, and a rare bottle of wine could be lost to the move. Hopefully, you won’t find yourself unpacking any winesoaked boxes at your new home, but, given the fragile nature, it’s smart to insure a valuable collection.

REMODELING?

QUESTIONS TO ASK DURING YOUR PRE-CONSTRUCTION MEETING Embarking on a remodeling project is an exciting endeavor—you’re finally going to get that new kitchen or finished basement you’ve been longing for. But going under the knife, so to speak, is also a stressful prospect. That’s why scheduling a pre-construction meeting with your remodeling professional is so important. According to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), the pre-construction meeting is a key opportunity for the remodeler to explain exactly what will be done, as well as how the job will progress. It also provides a chance for both parties to define their expectations and flag any problems that may arise. The goal is to alleviate as many surprises in advance as possible. With peak home remodeling season right around the corner, now is the time to contact your trusted contractor or home remodeler to discuss a remodel. Here are just some of the issues the NAHB recommends you discuss with your remodeling professional during the pre-construction meeting: Are you okay with signs on your property? In addition to acting as a marketing tool, signs help contractors and suppliers locate your home. Decide now whether you will agree to this. If you have an alarm system, determine how it will be handled. Will you give the construction crew a key, or do you plan on having someone on the premises to let them in?

Ask if any utilities will be interrupted during the remodel, such as water or electric, and if so, for how long. This will help you decide whether you will need to find other accommodations for a period of time. What are your rules concerning workers using your landline for local calls? What about using your bathroom? Figure out a plan for removal of trash. Agree upon where the dumpster will be located. Discuss which areas of your home will be off limits to workers. You may discover that workers need access to certain rooms for part of the project. What will take place in terms of daily cleanup? Make sure your expectations are in sync with what will actually take place. When will work begin and end each day? Where will workers park? Once you find out, be sure to let neighbors know. Let your remodeler know what your rules are when it comes to smoking, profanity and music.

Laying all of this out in advance will help make for a smooth project and a pleasant working relationship for all. So contact your local home remodeler or contractor today to start getting everything planned out.

Summer

ENERGY-SAVING TIPS FOR STAYING COOL AT HOME THIS

As summer temperatures soar, it’s tempting to turn on the air conditioning full blast—assuming you have such a system. But whether you do or not, electric air conditioning isn’t cheap to run, nor is it eco-friendly. Given that Americans use more than double the electricity than many other nations do, sustainability experts suggest energy-efficient ways to stay cool in your home this summer, no matter how hot it gets outside. USE FANS - Standing or table-top, circulating fans are quiet, effective, and economical for cooling small areas. Keep one in each of the rooms you regularly use and chill out in comfort for less. MIST YOUR BED - At bedtime, mist your bed with cold water from the fridge, then turn a fan nearby. This will create an evaporative cooling effect, allowing you to sleep more comfortably even on very hot nights. TURN DOWN THE LIGHTS - Lights generate heat, so turn them down or off whenever you can do without them. USE LIGHT BLOCKING CURTAINS - In sunny rooms, light-blocking drapes or curtains can help keep a room from building up heat.

BE MINDFUL OF OVEN USE - Oven heat lingers, and nobody wants too much hot food when it’s sweltering out. Eat colorful, proteinbased salads for optimal nutrition and if you must turn on the oven, do so mainly in the early morning. DON’T LINGER AT THE FRIDGE - Refrigerators work harder in hot weather. Standing by an open fridge door while you debate what to eat lets out the cool air and makes the fridge work even harder and use more energy. TAKE SHORTER, COOLER SHOWERS - A short, cool shower is a great way to cool your skin and help you feel fresh. You can also cool down (along with the kids) under a refreshing garden hose sprinkle. ADD COLOR

TO YOUR BACKYARD WITH THESE DESIGN IDEAS

Even with the beauty that Mother Nature offers, you can heighten the look of your backyard with pops of color and interesting decor. With spring and summer right around the corner, many people are creating the ultimate outdoor entertainment space. Here are some design tips to add color to your backyard. HANG A HAMMOCK

INSTALL A BIRDBATH

If you’re looking to create a spot for ultimate relaxation, consider adding a hammock to a shaded corner of your yard. Have fun with colors by mixing and matching the hammock materials with the surrounding plants, creating an oasis that promotes wellness and health.

A birdbath offers a unique and natural way to bring more color into your yard. Of course, the birdbath can be painted any color you’d like, but the best part of this feature is how it attracts all different species of birds. From bluebirds to cardinals, robins to chickadees, a place for them to take a bath will cause your backyard to be full of color and life in no time.

DISPLAY PLANTS IN COLORFUL POTS Of course, plants and flowers can add an array of colors to your yard, but what you put them in can create a unique look to fit a theme or color scheme. Shop for pots with interesting patterns and designs that will tie together your space. Even look for light, bright hanging pots to add dimension and create a focal point.

HAVE FUN WITH THROW PILLOWS If you have created an area on your back deck or in your yard dedicated to relaxing and hanging out with family and friends, you likely have a couch or a few chairs. Incorporating throw pillows is a great way to show off your style and add a pop of color. Choose a pattern, color scheme or even different shaped throw pillows to create a comfortable and cozy sitting area.

THE ULTIMATE LAWN CARE DEBATE:

DIY, OR HIRE A SERVICE? Investing the time into proper yard care and maintenance every week can be tough to do. Like almost anything involving home maintenance, there are pros and cons to doing lawn care yourself. Understanding what’s involved in proper lawn care is the first step to determining which choice is right for you.

SPEND TIME OUTDOORS.

EQUIPMENT UPKEEP.

If you want built-in outdoor time every week to catch up on your favorite podcasts or soak in that vitamin D.

Mowers, trimmers, edgers, weed whackers – it takes a lot of equipment to maintain a yard. And that equipment can require a lot of maintenance, like changing oil, filling up gas tanks, replacing trimming line, not to mention, the cost that uptake requires.

COMPLIANCE. If you have a homeowner’s association, you’ll probably have to perform regular maintenance to meet their lawn regulations. Hiring a lawn service will make sure your stay out of the HOA doghouse.

GET IN A WORKOUT. If you enjoy working up a sweat whenever you can, lawn care provides an extra dose of exercise. Weekly or bi-weekly mowing burns some extra calories. And if you have kids, make them earn their keep by getting them to rake those dead leaves out of the yard, or bag up the weeds you pulled out of the flower beds.

CONVENIENCE IS WORTH THE COST. How much money is your time worth? In St. Louis, the average price of a lawncare service is $39 – not too bad for saving yourself hours of work. At the end of the day, the choice between DIY lawn care and hiring a service is your choice to make. But make that choice easier by contacting your local landscaping and lawn care company for an estimate – you might be surprised by just how affordable it is.
