EDITOR’S NOTE Benefit from the best Gone are the days where companies had the luxury of tossing up money at the problems they faced. The world before the financial meltdown of 2008-09 was one characterised by excess, while the era since has been often classified as the new normal.

That is why Employee Benefits Asia is back for the fourth year running to help HR leads and C&B specialists truly understand the promise – and pitfalls – of leveraging benefits to improve the attraction and retention of staff.

Low hanging fruit is harder to come by for organisations, which now have to go the extra mile in most geographies and product lines, or when targeting consumer groups.

Held in Singapore for the past three years, this year we take pride in hosting the conference in Kuala Lumpur as well as Hong Kong to bring a truly regional experience in terms of the learning as well as networking.

Innovation – be it in the form of newer solutions or newer ways of doing things – is repeatedly proving to be the key source of competitive advantage. The impact of all these developments has not been lost on those in charge of devising the best ways to attract, reward and retain an organisation’s critical talent. HR teams, and their compensation and benefits professionals, have been party to a sea change in their job descriptions. Recent research in the field identified managing costs as the top business challenge. This theme spilled over as a top driver of rewards as well, which the study identified as external benchmarks, performance management and cost management.

As with every conference produced by the Human Resources team, we have an excellent line-up of experienced professionals to debate, discuss and share best practices and case studies. Throughout these two days, you can expect discussions and case studies on various aspects of compensation and benefits, including global versus local strategies, return on investment, and if cash really still is king. It is time to find untapped sources of innovation in C&B, create measurable reward strategies and devise innovative benefits programmes. So, let’s get talking.

But is really about costs versus compensation? Rather than being at opposing ends of the spectrum, costs and compensation have emerged as complementary. What that means for C&B professionals this year and at least the next is a continuing focus on defining what performance and productivity mean to the organisation.

Beyond just a publishing house, we continue to bridge and support the growth of the SME community through various channels, such as via our regular business networking and seminar series, as well as hosting the country’s largest annual SME networking event, the MALAYSIA SME® Congress. The congress provides a continuous source of inspiration for entrepreneurs. In educating and bringing awareness of the importance of SMEs to Malaysians, we also produce the Small Mission Enterprise (S.M.E), a multimillion dollar business sitcom TV series. In a nutshell, MALAYSIA SME® is all about SMEs, locally and globally. It’s all about the SME.
