Note from the editor Attending an awards show is great, isn’t it? How many opportunities do you get to wear a tuxedo or a gown, eat a great meal, and share some drinks with your colleagues and peers as you celebrate each other’s achievements? There’s nothing I like better than a good night out, and I’m sure most of you would agree. Who doesn’t like a good party? But this year’s second annual Human Resources Excellence Awards is so much more than just a party. It’s an opportunity to truly celebrate HR. Beyond the spotlight and the trophies tonight, these awards are designed as a platform to promote and recognise excellence within Malaysia’s human resources function across multiple industries and companies of all sizes. Any good HR professional knows the value of rewarding good work and recognising contributions, which is why the Human Resources Excellence Awards exists in the format it does. By enlisting a panel of experienced and highly knowledgeable HR professionals – your peers – to judge and scrutinise hundreds of awards submissions we received from all over Malaysia, we can truly say this awards night is entirely for HR, by HR. You are the leaders in your field. The HR champions. The trailblazers of strategic and well-thought out human resources processes. This year’s entries not only gave us some great insight into current people management practices, but also helped to set new benchmarks and standards for the wider HR industry in Malaysia. Isn’t that something worth celebrating? I wish the very best of luck to all of tonight’s finalists, and I thank you for continuing to support Human Resources magazine and for your commitment towards bettering HR in Malaysia. Cheers!

The rewards landscape is changing rapidly. The C&B function, therefore, is at the forefront of change and innovation, constantly trying to improve the company’s employee value proposition, while balancing the cost of compensation and beneďŹ ts. With the rapid growth in Malaysia has come the challenges of attracting and retaining key talent to enable that growth. Providing differentiation in pay, therefore, is now a strategic imperative for any company. The C&B function is increasingly getting involved at all stages of an employee life cycle. The C&B professionals, therefore, are expected to steer strategic conversations with the compensation committees in addition to being able to analyse and draw insights from the market benchmarking data. Mercer has been at the forefront of providing bleedingedge research, tools and analytics to the C&B profession in Malaysia and around the world. It is therefore our privilege and delight to present the C&B award at HR Excellence 2014.

Excellence in HR Social Media & Technology Recruiting with social networking is fast becoming a way of life. In our digital, fast-paced day and age, everything is plugging in, even the pool of applicants. Therefore, the strategic use of social media will actually reap more benefits to the employer branding and recruitment strategy. Social media is also commonly used on a professional level. In Malaysia, 43% of talent leverage social media to find information on potential employers, and one in three feel it is important their potential employer is active on social media. Therefore, not only is social media an important source of information for talent on employers, its vast reach and “always on” mode can also help employers better brand themselves. It can also help them to interact with current and future talent in a far more engaging manner than traditional means. Since the ability to find and retain the right talent is imperative to an organisation’s success, employer branding on social media is crucial in today’s competitive talent landscape. Jobtact – Malaysia’s first social recruiting network – feels honoured to have the privilege to support Human Resources magazine’s Human Resources Excellence Awards for the category – Excellence in HR Social Media & Technology. Each finalist is a winner in their own right, and we would like to extend our warmest congratulations to them in recognition of their effort that each trophy represents. Proud of you!

Human Resources magazine’s Excellence in Recruitment & Retention Strategy award is a timely celebration of the best in talent acquisition and retention, while at the same time recognising the importance of recruitment and retention in the broader world of work. At Hays, we passionately believe the right person can transform an organisation. That’s why we understand the importance of having advanced recruitment and retention strategies. That’s also why we are honoured to support this award. As global recruiting experts, we see daily the challenges organisations face as they attempt to recruit the skills they need. Malaysia faces a shortage of high-level skills, but this challenge is not unique to our own local market. HR practitioners in all 33 countries we operate in face similar challenges, and in our global world of work, identifying, attracting and retaining the top talent unites all of us in the recruitment and HR industries. Overlay this with complex issues presented by the advent of new technologies, mounting legislative and regulatory pressure, changing demands for more flexible working practices and globalisation, and it’s no wonder that now, more than ever, we need innovative and world-class strategies to recruit and retain the very best people. The finalists in this award category have not only achieved this, but in doing so they have demonstrated the depth of HR talent that Malaysia can produce. We hope, through supporting this award, to encourage continued innovation and excellence in recruitment and retention, while at the same time recognising the essential role that HR plays in the success of organisations today. We would like to offer our congratulations to all finalists in this category for their positive contribution to their organisation and for inspiring the wider HR and recruitment community.

Today’s workforce is more diverse than ever. For the first time in history you have five different generations of workers engaging and collaborating together to help your business execute its strategy. The 21st-century workforce is not only global, but highly connected, technology savvy, and demanding. Employees are youthful, ambitious and filled with passion and purpose. Millennials are a major force and will represent 75% of the workforce in 2025 and transform customer demands and the workplace. Today’s workers work differently. They are more social and mobile. They no longer believe in the hierarchical commandand-control structures of the past where information was isolated in the hands of an elite few. They are more inclined to collaborate and share information with co-workers, peers and partners in an effort to execute and evolve your company’s business strategy. Simplification and standardisation. Business processes need to be slimmed down and sometimes eliminated altogether – “melted” – by taking advantage of process automation and standardisation on best practices. One of the big promises we see cloud computing delivering on is standardisation. If you can standardise, automate and socially enable your processes, your manual processes just melt away and you can focus on the problems and less on the administrative process issues. Employee engagement and talent management. This remains a top priority for executive leaders: CEOs are still saying talent management is not solved. Critical new skills are scarce – and their uneven distribution around the world is forcing companies to develop innovative new ways to find people, develop capabilities and share expertise. They know the key to success is a talented, engaged and properly motivated workforce. The technology HR uses and requires to operate in this new world must change. User expectations have changed – people are mobile, collaborative and social, and expect business systems to act like the consumer systems they use every day – Facebook, Amazon, LinkedIn. NTT DATA Business Solutions, Malaysia, part of the sixth largest IT company in the world, is a local company with a dedicated focus on the world’s leading Cloud HCM solution suite – SuccessFactors. Our local team, backed by our regional and global reach, helps businesses in Malaysia to optimise their talent through targeted and effective adoption of the end-to-end functionality available in this solution suite. Our passion is enabling people at work and we are therefore delighted to sponsor HR Team of the Year 2014.
