It is well known that organisations succeed or fail based on their leaders. Great leaders create alignment and momentum toward a shared vision, elevate employee engagement and morale, effectively manage change, increase productivity, drive growth for their organisation, and so much more. These are challenging objectives to say the least, particularly when you consider that strong and effective leaders are needed at every level in the organisation—not just at the top. As we continue the SG50 celebration, we are fortunate to operate in a growing market with low unemployment and a strong business outlook. Yet we face significant risks to maintaining this position and achieving desired growth, including talent gaps, increasing competition, low employee engagement and productivity issues. This has made the competition to find talented leaders increasingly fierce and the need to retain them even more urgent. The loss of even one leader can be costly, given that about 50 per cent of replacements fail within 18 months and, among senior ranks, the cost of this failure to the organisation can exceed 20 times their salary.
