Leading and learning Dearest delegates, A warm welcome to the HR Leaders Summit 2016, the third consecutive year of our handcrafted signature retreat. Held on the grounds of this striking Renaissance Phuket Resort & Spa, we couldn’t have asked for a more picturesque break away from our reporting desks, or a greater opportunity to learn from you all. Once you’ve arrived and made yourself comfortable today, you can look forward to catching up with 50 of your peers, joining us from Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Cambodia – for three days of group sessions, informal networking opportunities, gala dinners and leisure activities to create a distinct, interactive forum. What is especially unique about all this, is that we have not only handpicked the industries you all represent with devotion, but have also endeavoured to build an agenda that incorporates the most of our time together, but leaving adequate space for work and play. With keynote presentations covering topics such as the changing role of the CHRO, utilisation of HR analytics, and gender diversity in the boardroom, there will be plenty of opportunities to share your ideas. Moreover, for the first time, we have presentations pencilled in from leaders external to HR, such as from managing directors and marketing, providing a valuable viewpoint to everything we do in HR.
At the end of the retreat, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to learn that you all go back to your home countries having developed strong friendships with each other, and a promise to catch up over HR issues you face at the workplace, going forward. Our team is thrilled to produce this retreat, not to mention the opportunity to hear real-life stories of challenges and achievements from all of you. As with all of our events, our team remains active on social media, driving through some key content through Twitter (@mag_HR or #HRLS2016), Facebook and LinkedIn – so feel free to join us there. It’s not often that we all get together in a setting like this, so let’s make the most of our time here! It is a pleasure to have you here – so please enjoy the HR Leaders Summit.

As we close out the day, each roundtable moderators are tasked to share their conversations and three key takeaways related to their topic.
Topic 1
HR as a business driver of innovation and transformation As organisations in Asia look to innovate, human resources has a unique opportunity to drive and manage large-scale changes. How are HR departments fostering a culture of innovation within their organisations? What programmes are harnessing their employees’ creativity and capacity for invention? How can employees be both encouraged and enabled to create new projects and roles within their organisations? Moderator: Joyce Foo, country human resources director, NXP Semiconductors
Topic 2
Understanding why HR strategy implementations can fail Failure in implementing an HR strategy is one of the most common causes of a struggling enterprise. HR leaders need to ensure the HR strategy integrates with the organisational strategy before you can venture onto the journey of execution and success. It is important to examine the root causes of the common failures in the implementation of an HR strategy to avoid potential execution trouble spots and how to overcome them. Moderator: Asha Menon, director, human resources, Agility Logistics
Topic 3
Mitigating workforce and business risks through strategic workforce planning and analytics Everyone is talking about workforce planning and analytics these days; often the challenge is in gaining alignment on how and what to do, and what the actionable result is and should be. Why do companies have so much difficulty developing effective workforce plans? How can HR leverage on data analytics to predict workforce trends and drive business strategy? Moderator: Charles Hughley, general manager, global talent management, Johnson Electric
Topic 4
Talent management strategies to attract the best and brightest: Winning the war for talent The war for talent has never been more competitive. Companies everywhere are struggling to attract and retain top talent, resulting in bandwidth constraints, expertise needs and talent gaps. Potential employees are increasingly seeking meaning, mentorship, and most importantly, flexibility when choosing where to work. How do you win the war for top talent when employees are no longer motivated by the old HR toolkit? Moderator: David Heng, managing director and head of talent management and culture building, CIMB Bank
Topic 5
The role of HR in overcoming uncertainty and pursuing business growth The modern workplace is constantly evolving and HR leaders need to be able to anticipate and respond to these changes. What are the critical challenges facing HR, and how are HR departments adapting to meet those challenges? How is HR aligning itself with the broader strategic objectives of their organisations? Moderator: Adrian Ole, regional HR director – Asia, International SOS
