SINGAPOREANS DISSATISFIED WITH TRAINING Singapore – Local HR practitioners need to step up their game when it comes to planning corporate training processes for Singaporean employees if they wish to increase employee retention levels. According to the “2014 Workplace Learning Trends across APAC Region” survey by Cegos Group, there has been a significant decrease in the number of locals being trained this year, down from 89% in 2012 to 76% this year. Out of the 2,796 APAC employees polled, 12% of local employees stated they were primarily motivated to train due to insufficient training in their current role, while 10% said they would like to train in order to get a new job. “The 2012 survey noted seeds of dissatisfaction with training and this year’s survey shows the problem has become even more deeply rooted with major implications for talent management and employee retention given that Singaporean learners are more driven by getting a new job and a pay rise than in any other country surveyed,” the report stated.

While the overall number of locals being trained has decreased, the report found Singapore has the highest population of workers training within office hours (89%), a 6% increase since 2012, and more Singaporeans (59%) use one-to-one mentoring than in any other country. This has resulted in a dramatic shift away from classroom learning – from 65% in 2012 to 46% this year. When it came to analysing the learning trends across the six Asia Pacific countries surveyed in the report, one in five respondents had had no training in the past 12 months. In addition, more than 16% stated they were dissatisfied with the training provided to them. While the main training motivation across APAC was highlighted to be soft skills development for personal growth, organisational training (technical, company and product) was the one training focus provided by organisations, demonstrating the imbalance of what is provided versus what is being asked for.
