1 | TALENT MANAGEMENT ASIA 2016
Editor’s note Stocking up on your talent strategies There has been plenty of action to keep HR professionals on their toes in the early months of this year. The global economy is shaky and chances of growth are uncertain, even in the typically robust “emerging” markets. The clouds of this tentative business outlook have driven many decision-makers back into the realm of cautiousness. A number of companies in the region have announced steps to cut back staff or salary increases, with layoffs being led by employers with a large regional presence in the banking and energy sectors. But not all is doom and gloom. There are examples of companies taking progressive steps to ramp up HR processes that need an upgrade for the new way of working. For example, IBM recently ditched its 10-year-old annual performance review system for an approach that lets employees set shorter term goals, and gets managers to provide feedback on their progress at least every quarter.
What strengthens this year’s conference more than ever is that the centre stage action will be complemented by parallel tracks focused on specialised themes such as recruitment and retention, and talent development and training. So that on day one, you will be able to pick and choose the sessions that are most relevant to you, amid the bustle of simultaneous learning and discussion avenues. Since its launch in 2013, Talent Management Asia, which has also been hosted in Malaysia and Hong Kong, has grown to become Asia’s biggest conference for senior HR professionals. As always, we’re excited to bring this conference to you and we are keen to meet you and your team over the course of these two days. Enjoy the conference and we look forward to your feedback!
In conversations with professionals across Asia, we find the HR function today is more relevant than ever, with a view to helping organisations navigate through these tough times by leveraging the retention and engagement of high performers. Really, there are many views on the best way to do this, and that’s just what Talent Management Asia 2016 is all about.
Human Resources’ bespoke annual event is an opportunity for you, the HR leaders, to gather and discuss the latest issues, challenges and trends every organisation is facing to some effect. In these two days, you can look forward to exchanging ideas and learning about cutting-edge talent management strategies from regional and global HR thought leaders.

14:50 / Afternoon coffee and networking break 15:20 / Round table discussion
By participating in a round table discussion session, each one of you will facilitate a two-way conversation wherein the focus of discussion will lie in examining current pressing issues faced by many an HR leader such as yourself, enabling an intense discussion session with like-minded HR leaders to arrive at solutions that one can implement within their organisation.
Recruitment and retention This session will look beyond benefits packages as a factor to recruit and retain employees. It will explore ways to measure workforce needs and other talent management strategies that retain high-performing individuals. This round table topic will explore systems and principles that are imperative to a successful employee recruitment and retention strategy. Host: Carl Kimball, regional vice-president, PageUp
Learning and development
Building a pipeline of home-grown talent is of paramount importance for organisational growth in this increasingly competitive business world. And companies that are able to leverage on current L&D trends to engage employees and maximise their return on investment will be essentially laying the groundwork for a successful L&D programme. By being part of this round table discussion, you will walk away with new ideas and answers to take back and implement within your own L&D strategies. Host: Oana Gavril, managing director, SEA, The KPI Institute
Employee engagement
The most conventional, and perhaps desirable definition of employee engagement, is a scene where smiling employees work harmoniously and collaborate effectively as productivity skyrockets. But the sobering truth is creating true employee engagement within firms is a painful process that is often messy and difficult. This discussion will take you through some of the best practices in place at leading organisations. Host: Srikanth Chandrashekhar, regional talent leader, APAC, Pall Corporation
Leadership development
The development of employees – that is, giving them the tools, knowledge and know-how to reach their full potential, thus allowing them to contribute the maximum amount to your business goals – is the absolute backbone of any management strategy. Not only is it about the bottom line, but we know employees cannot contribute their best if they don’t feel like they’re being invested in. This round table will facilitate discussion on how to optimise and grow your future leaders. Host: Gaurav Sharma, human resources director, bottling investment group, Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei, Coca-Cola
Succession planning
Succession planning is more important than ever due to increasing talent retention pressures and the need for business to not slow down when key staff exit. With this situation, how can HR leaders ensure quality human capital capacity in the long run? This round table will discuss how to determine the individuals who can lead the changes and integrate with senior management for the changes. Host: Peter Wood, vice-president, talent management, global human resources, Schneider Electric
9 | TALENT MANAGEMENT ASIA 2016
Compensation and benefits
When it comes to rewarding staff and implementing compensation and benefits programmes, many organisations throughout the region still seem to face a number of dilemmas. And it’s a difficult balance to keep employees happy. Listening to their needs and trying to accommodate them is one of the best ways to retain good people in a tight, under skilled market. This discussion will allow you explore what others have done, and what the outcomes were. Host: Suresh Kumar Mutuya, director, corporate talent and organisation development, UTAC Holdings Limited
Mobility
One of the biggest challenges in maintaining a globally mobile workforce – from a strategic and logistical perspective – is determining which type of compensation approach to take with your assignees. It’s no longer necessary to stick to expatriate packages that offer a wide, yet irrelevant range of benefits. However, crafting packages that are too rigid and only cater to locals may fail to attract large, diverse groups of talent. In this round table session, explore how to negotiate between the maze of options available when developing a relevant and effective strategy for your organisation. Host: Stephane Michaud, regional manager, Asia and Oceania, strategic planning and HRD consulting, Mitsubishi Corporation Corporate Center for Asia & Oceania
Big data talent analytics
Workforce analytics is becoming rapidly prevalent as a key business and HR tool and a major component to strategic decision-making. However, gathering and interpreting data is not without its pitfalls and the approach is still, for many, in the assessment stage. This discussion will be your chance to hear from and question experts on how they met the challenges of using workforce data and how they succeeded in bringing about greater efficiencies and decision-making as a result. Host: Jeffrey Fong, senior manager, HR technology and analytics, Applied Materials
Performance evaluation
Performance evaluations have been a significant element of measuring progress of employees in most organisations. But are they as credible now as they were in the past? This round table will offer you new ideas and strategies for you to implement within your organisation. Host: Sasikala Annamalai, senior business development, The KPI Institute
HR technology
Despite HR professionals being in the front line of the ongoing talent war, not all teams are armed with the same weaponry. Old legacy systems and outdated technology still being used in many organisations to manage talent is the modern-day equivalent of going into battle empty handed. HR teams can no longer afford to overlook the benefits of HR technology and this discussion brings you the latest from HR experts. Host: Chris Welch, VP, TalentStream technology, CareerBuilder Singapore
