WELCOME LETTER

Welcome to the 2023 HRC North Carolina Equality Dinner!

Thank you for joining us for the 2023 HRC North Carolina Dinner. Tonight is an evening to celebrate our accomplishments and support our work to ensure that all are equal under federal law. Our tireless efforts have brought the Equality Act the closest it’s ever been to reality. So much is riding on the actions we take after we leave this ballroom tonight. As we look ahead, let’s also reflect on where we have been.

When COVID changed the world, we were preparing and organizing for the most consequential presidential election of our lifetime. So much of our movement depended on in-person interactions to change hearts and minds. When that was no longer a viable or safe option, we went digital with our organizing. Unsure of this familiar yet new digital advocacy, we knew the lives of so many depended on us to get it right, and we did - because of you. With your help, we elected the most pro-Equality ticket in history to the White House, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Unfortunately, as we are so frequently reminded, those who wish to do our community harm will continue to do so no matter who is in office. Over the past two years, we’ve seen a dramatic increase in anti-LGBTQ+ legislation across the country. We have seen almost 400 bills directed to hurt our community in multiple states including North Carolina. Even in 2023, 29 states still do not have nondiscriminatory policies in place to protect our community within the health, employment, and housing sectors. Hate crimes and murders against our transgender community, and specifically trans women of color are exponentially higher today than at any other point in our history.

We must fight back to send a message that hateful measures taken against our community will not stand. An injustice against one of us is an injustice against all of us. We cannot be distracted as we approach the midterm election. The time to act is now. And this is why we are here tonight: to take action.

This evening you will hear from changemakers that reflect the diversity of the LGBTQ+ movement for Equality. We hope you listen carefully to their stories and use their message to energize, empower and engage. There has never been a more important moment in history for us to work harder than ever before.

Thank you for joining us for this evening of action and also celebration. Together there is Power in Action.

Justine Lindsay

SPECIAL GUEST

Justine Lindsay is a dance enthusiast and the first ever transgender NFL cheerleader. She is a member of the Carolina Panthers’ elite cheerleading squad, the TopCats. She graduated from North Carolina State University with a degree in Communications and from Johnson C. Smith University, where she was a member of the Golden Bullettes dance team and obtained a degree in Dance. Justine is also first Brand Ambassador for Transcend Charlotte.

Transcend Charlotte

DAN MAUNEY LEADERSHIP AWARD

Transcend Charlotte was founded in 2015 by Trey Greene & Che Busiek, local advocates determined to address the lack of affirming services for gender diverse people (18+) in the Queen City. Beginning with peer groups and affirming clothing, Transcend has since grown to be a wrap-around mental health and social services provider and community leader. Our programs include therapy, case management, the Xpression Space (free clothing, wigs, binders & breast forms), peer groups, events and resource fairs, name change workshops and more.

While proud Transcend’s growth in recent years, we recognize that it barely touches the surface of need for our communities. Each year NC sees a barrage of anti-trans and anti-queer legislation and is of the most dangerous states in the US for trans people. To continue our pursuit of social justice and equity for gender diverse people, we knew we had to do more.

To that end, in 2022 Transcend formally merged with Carolinas CARE Partnership (CCP), leaders in housing, mental health & social services for LGBTQ+ folx & people living with HIV. This bold and exciting step was taken so that together, Transcend & CCP could form the CCP LGBTQ+ Life Center. This strategy prioritizes mental health, healthcare, housing and social services equity for queer and BIPOC communities, while honoring the lived experience and history of LGBTQ+ communities with the HIV pandemic. Transcend remains a branded programmatic division of the CCP LGBTQ+ Life Center. In addition, the center offers therapy, case management, peer groups, resource provision (clothes, transportation, self-care products, groceries), substance use support, HIV testing, and more, free of charge for all LGBTQ+ community members & people living with HIV. The LGBTQ+ Life Center drop-in space will launch April 2023 and we are thrilled to host our first annual Queer Prom for LGBTQ+ community members and allies on April 22, 2023! We hope you will join us in our fight for queer communities. Your partnership is invaluable, we will only see change together!

Congressman Jeff Jackson

Congressman Jeff Jackson is a dad, husband and soldier. He is in his 20th year of military service, having enlisted after the attacks of September 11th, trained at Ft. Bragg, and served in Afghanistan. He continues to serve today as a Major in the Army National Guard.

After deploying to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Congressman Jackson attended law school at UNC-Chapel Hill with help from the G.I. bill, before serving as an assistant district attorney in Gaston County.

In Gaston County, he tried more than one hundred cases. In the process, he saw firsthand how a failure to properly invest in and prioritize public education, economic development, mental health care, and criminal justice reform was harming people and families across North Carolina.

Congressman Jackson spent eight years as a North Carolina State Senator, representing Mecklenburg County. He dedicated much of his time in the General Assembly to reforming the criminal justice system, including working to close the consent loophole, decrease unnecessary charges and arrests, and improve our expungement laws.

As a state Senator, Rep. Jackson was outspoken about the need to reform our redistricting process so that voters can choose who represents them, not the other way around. The first bill he ever filed in Raleigh was to end gerrymandering by establishing an independent redistricting commission.

Now, Congressman Jackson is the first person to represent North Carolina’s 14th Congressional District, which includes parts of Mecklenburg and Gaston counties.

WHAT WE DO

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer equality. Since 1980, we have been fighting for a better future for LGBTQ+ Americans. We are now working tirelessly to pass the Equality Act, which will soon head to the U.S. Senate for consideration, fight back against a multitude of anti-LGBTQ+ legis-lation in states nationwide and ensure everyone in our community is treated with dignity and respect. While our opponents are emboldened and on the attack, the Human Rights Campaign and our grass-roots army of more than 3.2 million members and supporters are energetically defending the rights we’ve gained and ramping up our fight for full equality across the board.

ANTI-EQUALITY LEADERS AND LEGISLATION

The alarming spate of anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced across the country in 2020 has continued to surge in 2021. These include bills that would prohibit transgender youth from receiving genderaffirming care and bills that would prohibit transgender youth from participating in sports. This wave of anti-transgender legislation harkens back to the surge of anti-transgender bathroom bills that hit state legislatures in 2016, including North Carolina’s HB2. We remain committed to aggressively fighting these threats to equality by those who seek to undermine our rights. HRC will do whatever it takes to protect the rights and fundamental equality of every LGBTQ+ person in this country.

BU ILDING A ND DEMONSTR AT ING POLITICAL P OWER

HRC’s decades-long work to build political power has uniquely positioned us to reach LGBTQ+ and ally voters who prioritize equality on the ballot, also known as Equality Voters. HRC has identified 57 million Equality Voters nationwide who, if they turn out to vote, will support pro-equality candidates. HRC’s early and sustained year-round engagement in battleground states like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin bolstered historic turnout in 2018 and 2020 producing pro-equality outcomes at every level of government. In 2019, HRC’s mobilization of Equality Voters in Virginia, where lawmakers had repeatedly blocked proequality bills over many years, produced groundbreaking progress for LGBTQ+ Americans in the South. These victories led to the Virginia Values Act becoming law, making Virginia the first state in the South to advance statewide nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people.

ADVANCING EQUALITY IN OUR DAILY LIVES

The HRC Foundation improves the lives LGBTQ+ people by building understanding and shaping the public debate of LGBTQ+ people and the challenges they face through innovative research and public education campaigns. We also change the policies and practices in the institutions that shape our everyday lives (hospitals, schools, workplaces, and more) and empower strategic partners, community advocates, and allies through convenings and capacity-building. Guided by these theories of change and seeking to prioritize work impacting those who are multiply marginalized, we have 11 cuttingedge programs advancing equality in the U.S. and beyond.

All Children - All Families is the only national program dedicated to LGBTQ+ inclusion in child welfare (foster care and adoption agencies) that provides resource development, technical assistance and training.
