Letter from the Editor

What a week in Vegas! This one was certainly one for the record books. The entire season came down to a battle for the ages between Jose Vitor Leme, Jess Lockwood, and Chase Outlaw. These three warriors gave it everything they had until the end where Lockwood came out the victor. I believe fans truly appreciated the effort these men put forth as they battled until the final bull was bucked on Sunday afternoon. Rubens Barbosa etched his name in the history books, as well, with a ride on the ABBI Classic Champion bull, Chiseled, for 95.75 points. That is the fourth highest score in the history of the PBR World Finals and the crowd erupted when the score was announced.

All things considered, it was a great week for the sport of bull riding and I am glad that we, as fans of the sport, were able to experience it. Now we can all take a deep breath, relax, and wait for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Until next time, Terry

Talking “Bull” with Brayden

Lambert, the PBR director of livestock, thought that he was was going to buck off. I, on the other hand, had a little bit of faith in this kid because he normally rides bulls that are ninety miles an hour into his hand. Whenever the bull switched it up I thought it might be over but Cody stuck it to him and won the round.

Hi my name is Brayden Hollywood Brown and I am a miniature bull rider. Today, I am going to recap the 2019 World Finals and Champion. So let’s get into it. In round number one, Jess Lockwood rode a bull named Silver Back for 86.50 points. This bull went into Jess’s hand and bucked really nice allowing Jess to get a solid score in round number one. Jose Vitor Leme rode Sky Fall for 88 points. Jose rode this bull easily into his hand and giving him the boot at the end. Chase Outlaw rode Foghorn Leghorn for 88.50 points. This bull went away from Chase’s hand and was cranking it to the right. Cody Teel rode Skeeter Peter for 88.50 points. This bull made its debut at the World Finals and did not disappoint. He was going ninety miles an hour and Cody Teel had to work to get this one rode. Eduardo Aparecido rode the number one ABBI classic bull, Chiseled, for 91.25 points to win round number one. Chiseled goes to the right, into Eduardo’s hand, and I expected him to win the round on this really rank bull.

In round number three, Jose Vitor Leme rode Birthday Cake for 89.75 points. This bull went into Jose’s hand. Bulls that go into your hand give you a little advantage, usually. Previously he had never been ridden, but Jose got the job done and got a good score. Cody Teel rode Midnight Rain for 89.50 points. After the ride was over, Cody Teel thought he just got a little stinger but actually he tore his MCL and ACL. In round number four and five he tried to tough it out but those rides ended with buck offs. By the Chanpionship Round he could not stand the pain so he did not compete. Eduardo Aparecido rode Trail of Tears for 90.50 points. When Eduardo, aka Fast Eddy, picked this bull he had to be excited. This bull spins right in the gate into his hand and he almost got another round win. But the top rider was Jess Lockwood who rode Biker Bob for 92 points for the round win. Jess had third pick in this round, so when they left him this one he had to be happy. Jess rode this bull in Tulsa for 90.50 points. He did win the event in Tulsa but the dirt was not all that great which dropped the score by a couple points. But the dirt in Vegas was victory for Lockwood.

In round number two Jose Vitor Leme was called for a slap on Danny Boy around the four second mark. This bull has a lot of up and down and went away from his hand. This is what Jose struggles with and he just got bowed down over the front. This buck off may have cost him a world title. Matt Triplett rode Magic Poison for 89.50 points. This bull was really rank at the World Finals. He normally goes to the right but went to the left kicking over his head and spinning really fast. A well deserved score for Matt. Jess Lockwood rode Spotted Demon for 91.50 points. Jess had a good ride in round number one but this was a great ride. Spotted Demon normally goes to the right but changed things up and went left. As soon as Spotted Demon went left it was Jess all day long. Cody Teel rode SweetPro’s Bruiser for 91.50 points. Teel had previously been on this bull three times and he had never ridden him but that was Teel’s day. But no one was better than Cody Jesus who rode Lil 2 Train for a whopping 92 points to win round number two. Cody Jesus was a big underdog here. Even Cody

Instead, certain stretching and strengthening exercises may be helpful in reducing pain. The goal of the exercises is to push the disc away from the nerve root. The specific exercises recommended will often depend on the area of the spine affected. It’s best to talk with your healthcare provider when choosing which exercises to do.

Usually, pain from a herniated disc will slowly improve over several weeks. In most cases, pain should be gone in a few months. If pain from a herniated disc does not appear to be gradually decreasing in a few weeks, additional treatment may be needed. Physical therapy, pelvic traction, and steroid injections are sometimes used to treat a herniated disc. Surgery is usually not needed and tends to be a last resort. Don’t Accept Generic Brands There are so many name brand products that you know—you hear and read a lot about them. For most name brand products (medicines, foods, beverages, paper goods, etc., etc.) there are generic brands that are similar to their name brand counterparts, but you don’t generally see or hear the generics advertised. The greatest appeal of generic brands is that they do not cost as much. While the generics may be similar to the name brand, they are not identical, and the careful consumer can distinguish easily between “the real thing” and the imitations. While the following falls short of being perfectly parallel with the above illustration, the point is the same. There is the “name brand” which is “the real thing” and then there are the imitations, and they are certainly not the same. After being arrested for healing a lame man and preaching the gospel, Peter and John were asked on trial before the Jewish council, “...By what name have you done this?” (Acts 4:7). Peter had already answered this question at least twice before they were arrested. To the lame man at the gate of the temple he had said, “In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk” (3:6). Later, when they were preaching on Solomon’s porch, Peter had proclaimed, “And His name, through faith in His name, has made this man strong, whom you see and know” (3:16). So, when the Sanhedrin asked, “By what name,” the answer had already been given, but Peter was not ashamed to announce it again—“Let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole” (4:10). Notice that Peter did not offer some generic response of a power or name that was similar to “the real thing.” He didn’t point to some imitation that was pretty close. Then, Peter concluded his remarks with this definitive statement, “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (4:12). In that one affirmation of divine truth, the Scripture

Outside the Arena with...

PBR World Finals By Georgia Akers

Howdy! Having just returned from the PBR finals I have not interviewed anyone but as I did last year wanted to share photos I took “outside the arena”. Also thanks to my other photographers Cassidi Fancett who I met at a competition with her family and due to a bad knee was gracious enough to go down the steps and take pictures for me and of course my sweet husband Sam who also helped me. Also our fearless editor Terry Blake who joined in on my photo quest. If you are a fan of this sport there is so much to do that does not require a ticket. That is the purpose of the December “Outside the Arena” article. First, it is a big fundraising time for the Western Sports Foundation which supports our bull riders. They have a Charity Sporting Clay Competition sponsored by Marcene Taylor where anyone can compete and have a rider on their team. Many ladies competed. You did not have to be a great shot. This was followed with a first time fashion show where the wives of riders and stock contractors modeled outfits that the audience bid and bought. This was not just for the ladies. Many of the men attended. Who wouldn’t with some of the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders to open the show and the beautiful wives. Many of the wives were escorted by their husbands who did not look real comfortable in this element but they were good sports. And thanks to Chad Berger who helped get the crowd bidding and was just fun to have there. This was all planned and coordinated by WSF’s Aubrey O’Quinn and Peyton’s Project Runway. Peyton Martin is a recent bride in that she took time to marry PBR rider Gage Gay while in Vegas. We wish them the best. Now to the outside the arena competition. Everything is at South Point Hotel and Casino. This is where most of the stock contractors stay. The week before the World Finals there is the finals for the Velocity Tour. This requires a ticket. This is followed with Chris Shivers Miniature Bull Riders World Finals. This year we also had the UBHA Bucking Horse Finals. These animals are as athletic as the bulls. Then there were several competitions for the up and coming bulls. Yearlings and two year olds were competing for prize

money. These are our bulls of tomorrow. There is competition exclusively for the junior stock contractors as well as the women in addition to the stock contractors. And of course there is the fan zone where the riders have a meet and greet, lots of fashion and accessories to purchase or admire and Flint Rasmussen has his Outside the Barrel interview shows. I have been attending the World Finals for over 10 years and to me the best part is the friends you meet and see annually. This includes other season ticket holders for the World Finals whose seats are near yours, but also all the wonderful people we have met who have bulls or are avid fans of the sport and who support it year after year. I love seeing all the parents that bring their children. I always meet new people and have a chance to hear about their life and renew old acquaintances. We are truly a family. Smooth Operator 2019 YETI World Champion Bull

Smooth Operator certainly lived up to his name during the PBR Unleash the Beast World Finals at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. He was a “Smooth Operator” as he went head-to-head with Chase Outlaw in the Championship Round, dispatching him in 4.11 seconds for a season high bull score of 47 points, and the 2019 PBR/Yeti World Champion Bull title. Smooth Operator is owned by reigning PBR Stock Contractor of the Year Chad Berger, who was just voted the Stock Contractor of the Year for a record ninth time for the 2019 season. Smooth Operator is co-owned by Clay Struve and Julie Rosen.

After that last out, Smooth Operator then “smoothly” strutted his stuff and took a couple of victory laps around the arena. “He never does that,” Chad exclaimed. “It’s like he knew he just won the championship!” A fitting end to an amazing season for this nine-year old champion bovine! Not only did he win the World Champion Bull title and a check for $100,000, he ended the regular season as the top ranked bull with a bonus of $25,000. He was also the Yeti Bull of the Finals for another $25,000. There is always excitement in the air at the PBR Unleash the Beast World Finals. Each year it seems the race for the PBR World Champion Bull Rider and the World Champion Bull

Chase Outlaw takes on Smooth Operator in the Championship Round of the PBR World Finals. are closer than ever. This year was no exception! There was an electricity in the atmosphere of Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena as fans watched the bull riders and the bovine athletes battle it out, round by round, fighting to claim the championship. Thursday night was “Rank Night”, and the entire line up of the top five championship contending bulls were on hand to buck. Smooth Operator went into the Finals with a solid lead at 45.84 world average bull points. He would have to have two bad outs for the others to improve their averages enough to steal the title away from him. Statistically, they were all still in contention, but a lot had to happen for Smooth Operator to fall from first place and any of the other bulls, including Bruiser, the three-time and reigning PBR World Champion Bull, to claim the prize. Smooth Wreck was up first. Chad Berger watched as his secondplace bull unloaded Keyshawn Whitehorse in 3.92 seconds for a bull score of 45.50. Next up was Smooth Operator. Dylan Smith gave a valiant effort, but Smooth Operator triumphed,

putting Dylan in the dust at 6.99 seconds, for a bull score of 46.25. Then D&H Cattle Company’s Fearless dumped Dakota Buttar in 5.56 seconds for a bull score of only 44.25, which just about eliminated him from the championship race. Next, D&H’s Heartbreak Kid overwhelmed Lucas Divino in just 1.32 seconds for a bull score of 46.50. This moved him into a tie with number two Smooth Wreck. Finally, reigning and three-time World Champion bull SweetPro’s Bruiser faced 2012 PRCA World Champion Bull Rider Cody Teel. Cody hung on for the eight seconds and a score of 91 points. Bruiser scored only 44.25 points and was eliminated from the championship competition. Two-time PBR World Champion and CBS Sports commentator Justin McBride and PBR Director of Livestock and CBS Sports commentator Cody Lambert both picked Smooth Operator to win the title going into the Finals. “This is his last shot to win it,” Cody predicted on the CBS broadcast. “He’s still really good and he’s got a good lead coming into the Finals. I think he wins it.”

In the Championship Round on Sunday, Smooth Operator just needed 43.5 points against Chase Outlaw to claim the title. He scored 47 points and clinched the title when Outlaw went down in 4.11 seconds. Smooth Wreck dumped Cliff Richardson in 3.94 seconds, for a score of 45.25 points. 2019 Rookie of the Year Dalton Kasel almost conquered Fearless, as he hung on for 7.39 seconds before losing his grip. Fearless scored 45.50 points. Heartbreak Kid outdueled Luciana De Castro in 3.35 seconds for a score of 44.50 points. Slade Long of Probullstats.com posted on Twitter: “Chad Berger’s Smooth Operator is the PBR World Champ Bull. He’s a son of 186 Gigolo and a grandson of David Bailey’s Playboy Skoal. Based on his eight best regular season bull scores plus the World Finals (two outs), Smooth Operator ended up with 460 points- a 46 average on the season.” Obviously Smooth Operator comes from an elite bucking bull bloodline. Chad Berger said, “Hot & Ready is the 2019 PRCA Bull of the Year. He’s up there in years too, and he is Smooth Operator’s brother.” Hot & Ready is owned by Harper and Morgan Rodeo.

As soon as Smooth Operator’s winning score of 47 points was announced, Chad was observed throwing both hands high into the air as he stood on the platform behind the chutes. I asked him what he was feeling at that moment. “I was feeling relieved and happy for that bull,” Chad shared. “He deserved it. I wanted it so bad for him, and it was great for him to win it. It was a long week! I’m so happy for and proud of that bull, I can’t even put into words how I feel. It is really something special, especially since he’s nine years old. As soon as he left the chute, I knew he was going to win it.” So what does the future look like for this bovine champion? “My plan is to buck him next year,” Chad revealed. “He loves what he does, and I’m going to let him buck. But if he ever gets to where he’s not at 100%, I’ll pull him out.” I asked Chad how it felt to be the 2019 and now nine-time PBR Stock Contractor of the Year. “Winning that never gets old,” Chad said. “It is an honor to win that award, because the bull riders decide that. It tells me they like the job I am doing and the bulls I bring.” “But winning that award is a total team effort,” Chad continued. “I owe it all to our team. I’ve got the greatest team around me. Without partners Clay Struve and Julie Rosen, I wouldn’t even have that bull. I owe it to my wife and family, and my bull men, Delbert Nuce and Rex Meier. I owe it to Juan Gonzales and the guys at home that do all the work. This is a team and I’m just the head coach. They do a phenomenal job. I couldn’t do this without them.” “My feet have barely touched the ground yet,” Chad said with a chuckle. “It’s been a long year, but that was an amazing week!”

At the 2019 PBR World Finals, Jess Lockwood won his second World Championship. But there was a big difference between the talented boy who won in 2017 and the dominating man who took it back to Montana this year. When we spoke two years ago he was emotional, almost giddy, with the reality that he had accomplished his dream of becoming the World Champ. Now, however, after only competing in four seasons, he put in a near-perfect performance riding five of his six bulls; Silver Back in Round 1, Spotted Demon (to be second with 91 points) in Round 2, Biker Bob (for the round win and 92 points) in Round 3, The Right Stuff in Round 4 (91 points,), and Rising Sun for 91 points in the fifth round. The only bull who was able to best him all week was Canadian Mist in the Championship round. His record-setting ways didn’t stop there. Jess became only the seventh man to win both the World Finals and a World Championship, and one of only five men to win the World

title and the World Finals in the same year. He joins Mike Lee (2004), Renato Nunes (2010), J.B. Mauney (2013), and Silvano Alves (2014) in that feat. But riding his first five bulls did not surprise Jess. “I don’t get surprised when I make the whistle,” he told Humps N Horns after he was crowned our new Champion. “You’re not supposed to be surprised, you’re supposed to expect that out of yourself; that when you show up, you’re gonna ride them. So, I expected myself to stay on each night, and I expected myself to win. “That last bull was tough. Shout out to J.W. Hart and Leann Hart; their bulls bucked hard. That last bull, he handed me my butt,” Jess laughed. “Everything is different this time,” Jess continued. “I’m a couple of years older, I own my own ranch now, right next to my

this year. The same year that Jess won his first World Championship, Jose was invited to compete as that seasons’ PBR Brazilian champion. After going 6-for-6 at the Finals, Leme was named PBR’s Rookie of the Year. The following year, after a great showing, he finished as number two in the world behind Kaique Pacheco, and vowed to grab that title this year. He was looking unstoppable, but he was called for a slap in the second round of the Finals, which certainly changed the complexity of the event. Jose walked out of the T-Mobile Arena a bridesmaid yet again, but acknowledged that he will come back stronger. Trying not to show his disappointment, Leme gave genuine praise and respect to Lockwood for his big victory. We saw an exceptional battle in 2019. Three men went head to head down to the wire. Besides Lockwood and Leme, we cannot forget the performances that Chase Outlaw gave us, as well. Look for these three to be in the middle of a race again next year. After all, we have about five more years to watch him ride before that 28th birthday! But for right now, Jess Lockwood is the man of the hour and we want to send out a huge congratulations to him

parents, and I’m married. Being married and having your own place is gonna make you step up and mature. “I’ve got bills to pay now; I don’t just live off of my parents. I have a lot of responsibilities now, and taking care of those responsibilities has made me a different person.” With regard to winning both the Finals and the average, Jess said, “That’s something that I’ve always wanted to be able to say, and I didn’t know if I’d ever get to say it in my lifetime, especially that I won the World Finals, because it’s so prestigious and so hard. But to get it in my fourth year and have five more years left in me, I hope there’s more to come. I’m retiring by the time I’m 28!” Lockwood did not come into the Finals with the lead. Jess missed nine important Unleash the Beast events with a broken collarbone suffered in February. He was out until May. Jose Vitor Leme went into the PBR Velocity Finals ahead of Jess, and extended that lead to just under 750 points after winning those Finals. He might have missed nearly three months of the regular season, but once he was riding, Jess Lockwood more than made his presence known. He was almost perfect this Finals, covering his first five bulls and posting four scores of more than 90 points in the process. Entering Finals week, the World title race was still a hot one that was going down to the wire between Jose Vitor Leme, Jess Lockwood, Chase Outlaw, and while farther out of it, Joao Ricardo Vieira. The 2016 World champion Cooper Davis was next, but it seemed mathematically nearly impossible for him to win this year. Also interesting is that 15 of the 40 bull riders were making their first Finals appearance. The Rookie of the Year contest was also very close as we headed into Finals week. Dalton Kasel was holding the lead, followed by Daylon Swearingen, Mason Taylor, Alisson de Souza, and Ezekiel Mitchell. Round 1 Cowboys Coming into Las Vegas on top of the World standings, Leme extended his lead at the Velocity Finals the first weekend, winning that event. But the first man to strike at the World Finals and get that initial buckle was Eduardo Aparecido. He covered the Flinn / D&H Cattle Co. bull Chiseled for a 91.25 score. He had previously scored 91.50 on that bull earlier in the year, so he was understandably quite happy to have him again. Tying for second were Outlaw and the young man who was also leading for Rookie of the Year, Dalton Kasel. Both men scored 88.50. Chase, who is sitting in third place in the race for the World, covered Foghorn Leghorn, a bull owned by Dennis & Jan Owens. Kasel got his score when he rode the Cord McCoy / Bruce Wold / HR Bulls’ charge, Too Dirty.

“I’m just having fun and riding bulls,” Kasel said at the press conference after the first round. That comment brought nods of agreement from both Chase and Jose. “Yeah,” Outlaw said, “if you’re not having fun you better stay at the house. And I’m really proud of Dalton. He’s got a great, long career ahead of him. I pretty much called him out to be Rookie of the Year this year, but he’s doing what we all have to do, and that’s make the whistle.” Coming in fourth in this opening round was Cody Teel, who was close behind with an 88.25 after riding Skeeter Peter, owned by Owens / Smith. Fifth was Leme. Lockwood rode Silver Back (Mason / Smith Bucking Bulls) but only received a score of 86 points so Jose extended his lead a bit, while Outlaw also made up a bit of ground. As far as injuries, Brennon Eldred was unable to make it to the World Finals after dislocating his hip at the Velocity Finals the previous weekend. J.B. Mauney was injured in the chute in the first round, dislocating his right shoulder. He did not return that night. Daniel Tinsman was thought to have an injury to his liver when hit by his bull, but tests proved negative. He did however, suffer a concussion. Bull Power The bulls we saw on this night were three and four-year-old bulls from the ABBI, and there were some good ones! Only 11 men were able to make the whistle on them. A bull from Hudgins Bucking Bulls, El Big Bad, had the highest score this night, a big 46 points. The bull that Aparecido rode, Chiseled, had a score of 45.25, as did Preachers Kid, owned by K Bar C / RD Cattle. At this stage, Chiseled was leading the ABBI Classic standings.

Cowboys These were the bad boys of the bovine variety out tonight, but with the quality of riders that had marched into Las Vegas it was not surprising that 11 men were able to cover their bulls. The first three out stayed on, posting scores of 89.50, 92, and 89.25. That huge 92 held up until the end, giving rookie Cody Jesus a gold buckle on night number two. He covered Lil 2 Train, a Gene Owen / Jane Clark bull.

Bull Power As previously mentioned, this pen was filled with the four-legged powerhouses of the sport. The D&H Cattle / Buck Cattle / Erwin Cattle bull Heartbreak Kid scored a big 46.50 points to move up from fourth into a tie for second in the Bull of the Year standings with Smooth Wreck, a Dakota Rodeo / Chad Berger / Clay Struve / Diamond Willow bull. But he still trails leader Smooth Operator, (Dakota Rodeo / Julie Rosen / Clay Struve / Chad Berger) who was marked 46.25.

“This buckle is very special,” he said at the press conference. “I think I’m gonna sleep by it tonight. I didn’t think I had a ride like that in me; my confidence has been beat to the ground, with my groin injury and all. I was a really poor kid and had to work to get my bull riding gear. To be here on the biggest stage, this is very special to me” Lockwood was second, after he scored a 91.50 on Spotted Demon, a bull owned by Julio Moreno / Dallas Schott. In third was Teel, after his great ride on SweetPro’s Bruiser netted him 91 points. He had also covered both of his bulls and was leading the event average early on. Fourth went to the first man out this night, Cliff Richardson. He rode the great Cochise for that 89.50. Cochise is owned by Gene Owen / Jane Clark. Matt Triplett was fifth with his 89.25 ride on Magic Poison. That bull is owned by Frontier Rodeo Company. Four men had ridden both of their bulls; Richardson, Alan De Souza, Teel, and Lockwood, with Jesus, Lockwood and Teel all scoring 90+ points.

“We moved him (Heartbreak Kid) to a left-hand delivery, and since then his lowest score has been 45.50, and I thought he had a great day today,” said stock contractor H.D. Page. “He was my best shot to win the bull title coming in here, but he still has a steep hill to climb to get ahead of Smooth Operator.” Round 3 Cowboys Jess Lockwood grabbed the pick of the pen for this round, Biker Bob, owned by Dakota Rodeo / Chad Berger / Clay Struve / H&C Bucking Bulls, and made the most of it. He won Round 3 with a

Unfortunately, he was stepped on by his bull on Too Dirty (Cord McCoy / Bruce Wold / HR Bulls) continues to show his stuff after carrying Dalton Kasel to an 88.50 point ride in Round 1.

score of 92, had ridden all three of his bulls, and took over that event average lead. “That’s a bull that, going into that draft round, there’s I don’t think one rider in there that didn’t want that bull,” Jess said after the round. “You know what he’s going to do. He’s going to come out of there, he’s going to be 100 miles per hour right there to the left, and he was just that tonight and nice enough to let me stay on top of him.” Second in the round went to Aparecido, who garnered his second big ride in three rounds, a 90.50 on Trail of Tears, a CB Bucking Bulls charge. There was a trio of riders tied for third with scores of 89.50; Rubens Barbosa (who was called for a slap and then had that reversed) on Medicine Man, owned by TNT Bucking Bulls / Hart Cattle Co., Teel on the Dakota Rodeo / Chad Berger / Clay Struve / H&C Bucking Bulls’ Midnight Rain, and Leme on Birthday Cake, and M Rafter E Bucking Bulls / Goods Bucking Bulls entry. A total of three men had stayed on their bulls. Along with Jess, Alan de Souza and Teel were perfect thus far.

But this round might have also been called the Emotional Round. For Leme, who had not seen his family for two years, it was also the first time they had seen him ride bulls as a professional. His mom, grandmother, and little sister got to witness first hand his super ride. “It was a dream come true to have them over here,” Jose said through translator Paulo Crimber. “Knowing that they were here pulling for me helped me a lot.” As for Chase, even though his ride only got him 87 points and 11th place, Outlaw covered a bull that had a very special meaning for him. He rode Mason’s Missouri Golden, a bull named after his good friend who was killed the beginning of this year in a bull riding accident, Mason Lowe. “Chad named that bull after a great friend, Mason Lowe,” Outlaw later said. “That bull fit him, too. A great big ol’ strong son of a gun. He is one of the strongest bulls I have been on this year. I just thank the Lord we had the right stick ‘em and enough grit in our gas tank to the job done.” Not only was Outlaw friends with Lowe, but with Mason’s wife Abbey as well, and she was very proud as to what Chase has accomplished this year. He let Abbey know which bull he had selected, and told her that he would get it done. He made good on his word. Three nights down and the Rookie of the Year race still saw Kasel in front. Swearingen was still in second, Taylor remained in third. Zeke Mitchell had jumped over Alisson de Souza, moving up into fourth place. The injuries for J.B. and Tinsman continued to keep them out, and Frost ended up breaking his leg the previous night, so he would no longer compete as well. Jesse stayed in and Lawson Nobbs came in for Tinsman. There was no substitute for Joe. ALL FROST PODIUM SWEEP AT THE 2019 LFC

Joe, Josh and Jate Frost finish strong at the 5th Annual Lane Frost Challenge

As the temperature cooled and the lights came up at Young Living Farms Arena, the 5th annual Lane Frost Challenge (Mona, Utah) started to heat up. The 2019 LFC drew big names in the rodeo world as well as rising stars in the industry. Seasoned riders such as Travis Briscoe and Joe Frost faced off against up and coming riders such as Dustin Martinez, JorDee Nielsen, and Kyler Oliver. The Mona LFC was also the first time in history that all three Frost boys entered and rode in the same event. Joe, Josh and Jate Frost are second cousins to the late Lane Frost and no strangers to the rodeo world. In a pre-event interview with Joe Frost he shared

that this was the first time that all three brothers competed in an event together. When asked which one of the brother’s is going to win, Joe responded, “Well I am a little bias but I’d like to think that I am. But I damn sure want them to be second and third (referring to his brothers). But if they win I will be happy for them as long as I ride my bulls.” When asked about the event Joe replied, “it is awesome, they have added so much money it is hard not to come!” As a seasoned bull rider Joe also shared this advice for new riders who are just starting out. “Practice as much as you can and make sure you get you a pile of money saved up so you can go. Cause bull riding is expensive and if you don’t have some money to begin with you won’t make it too far.” Joe also shared his secret for dealing with the discouraging times, “I try to never let myself buck off three bulls in a row. Not that it never not happened to me. It does happen to me sometimes. You just got to go back to the basics. The basics are really the only thing that works.” The time he put in practicing and reviewing the basics paid off for him this time. Joe scored 81 points on his first ride and was fouled in the short round. With the event already won he was fortunate enough not to take the re-ride offer. When asked how he felt about the outcome of the event he stated, “It makes a guy feel pretty good. We didn’t finish like we wanted to but we are all three standing on the podium and that is where we hoped to be when we finished up.”

With Christmas around the corner, another year has come and gone. 2019 has proven to be a promising one as we have begun to see the young next generation bull riders starting to make their way to the top. Over the years, the NPBR has given bull riders a professional stepping stone and a way to prepare themselves mentally and physically for their future in professional bull riding. We have enjoyed watching many participate with us and go on to become accomplished bull riders that make a living riding bulls. Started in 2000, the National Professional Bull Riders will be in their 20th season as we begin the 2020 year. Continued from Page 30 Bull Power Three bulls had the highest score of the night, a 44.50. They were Barbosa’s bull Medicine Man, Cornell Bucking Bulls’ Peep Show, who bucked off Dylan Smith in 3.78 seconds, and a bull that Quaresima tried to ride but came down at 6.07, High Razor. That bull is owned by Humpz and Hornz / Sis ‘N’ Stan Bucking Bulls. These bulls were supposed to be ridden, and there were 16 men who accomplished that. Round 4 Cowboys Without a doubt, the star of this round was Rubens Barbosa. He drew the super bull that Aparecido won the first round on, Chiseled. Rubens matched wits with this bull perfectly, and when the dust cleared in the arena the celebrations began. Barbosa was given a giant score of 95.75! That was the fourth highest score in the history of the PBR World Finals! There had been a lot of things

weighing on him this season, but this ride definitely gave him the boost he needed. “I knew that bull,” Rubens told us later. “I knew he was a very good bull, but I did not expect a 95.75. I did my job and the judges saw my job, and I’m so happy right now. I watched bull riding on TV and started riding when I was about 16. Only my brother and I rode bulls, not my father or anybody else. “All I do is work out at the gym and train. That’s it. That’s all I do is ride bulls; that’s my job. I know that I’m 36 years old right now, but I don’t think I’m ready to retire. I think maybe I will ride for five or six more years.” In second place, with a score of 92.75 that would have won most other rounds, was Leandro Machado. He earned that score after covering El Big Bad, who posted the highest bull score of 46 in the first round after bucking off Mason Taylor. At the post-event press conference, Machado admitted that he felt he would win the round. “Without a doubt I thought I had the round win, but it didn’t last very long! I just want to rub that buckle for a minute,” he said to Rubens. “But I’m very happy for Rubens. He’s a great guy. He’s really humble and he treated me with a lot of respect. I’m really happy for him.” Lockwood was third with 91 points after his ride on The Right Stuff, owned by Dakota Rodeo / Chad Berger / Clay Struve / Diamond Willow / Smith / Nix / Owens. Leme was fourth with a score of 89.75. He covered BootDaddy.com. That bull is owned by Crescent City Bucking Bulls / Gene Owen. Bull Power What more can be said about Chiseled? The bull bucked twice at these Finals and gave both cowboys, Aparecido and Barbosa, round wins. It can’t get much better than that. Well, maybe it can. Cooper Davis goes toe to toe with Capoone (Martinez Bucking Bulls) who earned a bull score of 45 points in the Championship Round. previously mentioned, he was given the highest bull score in Round 1 and any other night would have easily given his rider, in this case Machado, a round win. Unfortunately, he went up against Chiseled both nights. Round 5 Cowboys Two riders hit pay dirt by tying for first in the round. Outlaw and Barbosa each scored a 91.50, Chase with Big Black, a K-C Bucking Bulls / Joe and Nina Webb bull, and Rubens with Stretch, owned by Dakota Rodeo / Chad Berger / Clay Struve / Heald Pro Bulls. This allowed Outlaw to still have a dog in the fight for the World title, while Barbosa got to pocket more money. The other World contender was third, as Lockwood covered Rising Sun, also owned by Dakota Rodeo / Chad Berger / Clay Struve / Heald Pro Bulls. He was awarded a 91.25 for his efforts. And in fourth was Leme. His ride on the Jane Clark / Gene Owen bull Cochise, netted him an even 91.

Jenkins Cattle Co. In third with an 88 was Ramon De Lima. He covered Outlaw Buckers Rodeo Corp’s Fish Camp.

Jose told us at the Velocity Finals that if he could pick any bull it would be Cochise. He got his wish.

But the dye had been cast, and after finishing the Finals riding five out of six bulls, Lockwood fought his way to the World title. The top five for the World standings were Lockwood, Leme, Outlaw, J.R. Vieira, and Cooper Davis.

And when you look at their record for the year it is no wonder. He has had the bull three previous times and scored more than 90 points each out. This night was no exception.

In round number four Ezekiel Mitchell rode Bad Beagle for 88.50 points. Zeke had a great bull that could have gone either way. Bad Beagle choose to go to the left away from Zeke’s hand but still had a solid score. Leandro Machado, the Brazilian invite, rode El Big Bad for 92.75 points. His first 90 point ride of his career. He fought all year for the PBR Championship in Brazil and ended up winning it. Jess Lockwood rode The Right Stuff for 91.25 points. This bull goes to the left, into Jess’s hand, and had never been ridden. In my opinion, I think this bull had a little bit of an off day but still critical points that Lockwood needed. Jose Vitor Leme rode BootDaddy.com for 89.75 points. I do not think that Jose should have been that many points but the judges decide, not me. Cooper Davis rode MAGA for 89.50 points. Cooper didn’t have the finals he would have wanted but still got a good score. Chase Outlaw rode Catch My Drift for 88.50 points. Catch My Drift is a Canadian bull. I have not seen this bull too many times, but I know Jess rode this bull at the Calgary Stampede for 89 points. One of the rankest outs I’ve ever seen was Rubens Barbosa on Chiseled for a monstrous 95.75 points to win round number four. This is truly a ride that no one will forget. Rubens put on a show and dressed this bull up. It was every thing the judges wanted to see. In round number five Chase Outlaw rode Big Black for 91.25 points. Every time I see Chase on this bull it always impresses me. Jose Vitor Leme rode Cochise for 91 points. Jose dressed this bull up as much as he could. I don’t think Cochise had his best week in Vegas but Jose

did a great job. Jess Lockwood rode Rising Sun for 91.50 points. It did not surprise me at all when Jess picked this bull. I actually predicted that Jess would pick this bull. It was only by a quarter point that he didn’t get anther go round win. Ezekiel Mitchell rode Lester Gillis for 89.50 points. Anther good score for Zeke I think he should have been in the nineties but the judges did not agree. Joao Ricardo Vieira rode Smoke Show for 89.75 points. Jose Vitor Leme won a round on this bull in Anaheim for 89.50 points and as soon as I saw Joao next to this bull I knew it would be big. Dylan Smith rode Spotted Snake for 89.50 points. For Dylan’s first World Finals the week seemed over but he got a good score and made things work. Rubens Barbosa was on fire. Rubens picked a bull they call Stretch. Stretch was into Rubens hand and he knew he could get big numbers on him. Man was right. Rubens Barbosa was on fire and won round number five with 91.75 points aboard Stretch. In the Championship round Chase Outlaw Choose Smooth Operator. This was a great bull to win the round. Although I didn’t like this mach up from the beginning because Outlaw struggles away from his hand. Chase bucked off Smooth Operator allowing him to clenched his first world title with a 47 point bull score. Congrats Chase for finishing number three in the world. Dalton Kasel was a alternate for Joao Ricardo Vieira due to Joao coming up missing. I expected nothing less than a qualified ride here. Dalton had previously ridden Fearless twice both for 92 points but he couldn’t get it done. Dalton bucked off but still won the Rookie of the Year Title. Congrats Dalton. Alan had a great World Finals and only bucked off one. He rode Magic Poison for 90.75 points. Matt Triplet rode the same bull in round number two only this time the bull went to the right and Alan got things done. Ramon De Lima rode Fish Camp for 88.50 points. This is another Canadian bull and bucked really well. The bull went into Ramon’s hand which meant after the ride he got to Hulk smash his helmet. Jose Vitor Leme was bucked off by Lil 2 Train. This definitely cost Jose a World Championship. These two have matched up before, so I thought it would go Jose’s way but Lil 2 Train did not agree. With Jose’s buck off it allowed Jess Lockwood to win the Finals and the 2019 World Championship even though Lockwood bucked off Canadian Mist. Jess now becomes the youngest two time PBR World Champion and PBR 2019 Champion. Jess had a great finals, even thought he had to sit out for nine weeks due to a broken collarbone.
