Letter from the Editor
It’s hard to believe that you hear people talking about the summer winding down already but with schools starting earlier each year, I guess it is. I feel like it worked pretty well when we were kids and started after Labor Day and finished the school year before Memorial Day. I am excited about the August issue that you now hold in your hands. We have some great articles that will let you see bull riding from a different perspecitve. When you have the opportunity to attend some of the PBR events in person, you realize that there are a lot of people that have to work really hard to make that happen. It is our goal to let you meet some of these great people over the next few months and we start with a feature by Barbara Pinella about the public relations team from the PBR. Humps N Horns has the privilege of working with these ladies on a regular basis and appreciate all they do to help us provide the best bull riding coverage for you each month. We also have another great story by Kelly Robbins about one of the world champion bucking bull contenders, SweetPro’s Bruiser, from the D&H Cattle herd. We will continue to feature the top contenders leading up to the PBR World Finals in Las Vegas, November 2-6. Last, but certainly not least, we give you a chance to meet Mike & Christina Heald as we learn about their journey into the world of stock contractors. This amazing couple is excited about being part of the PBR family and shows that there is a way for everyone to get involved one way or another. Until next time,

at reducing inflammation in joints when applied topically. For example, Aloe Vera contains many vitamins which act as antioxidants to remove free radicals. It also contains various enzymes, salicylic acid, and fatty acids which all have antiinflammatory properties.[2] It also contains a substance called lignin, which help helps these anti-inflammatory properties penetrate the skin more effectively. Another ingredient of Aloe Vera that helps to relieve pain is glucosamine. This is needed to keep the joints working well without irritation. Aloe Vera is easy to use because you can find a topical pain relief lotion that contains it. Or, if you have an Aloe plant sitting around, you can apply the gel contained in the leaf directly to the affected area. Capsicum
Natural Ingredients to Relieve Hand Pain
If you suffer from hand pain, you know how much it can interfere with your daily activities. Hand pain can affect even the simplest activities like opening a jar or tying shoelaces. Unfortunately, living with chronic pain can be very debilitating and frustrating. There are, however, many natural ingredients to help relieve hand pain. The reason that many people are now looking to natural ingredients for hand pain relief hand is because of the side effects of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). In 2013, The Lancet published studies showing that long-term use of NSAIDs can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and gastrointestinal problems.[1] There are many natural ingredients and supplements which have powerful anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties which can be very effective in relieving hand pain. These natural ingredients can help you manage and treat pain without the side effects of painrelief medications. What are the best natural ingredients to relieve hand pain? Aloe Vera Aloe Vera is well known for its anti-inflammatory properties in healing skin that has suffered burns. However, it is also very effective
Capsicum is derived from the chili pepper and is a product of capsaicin, the ingredient that gives the pepper its spiciness. Capsicum helps to relieve hand pain because it acts on the sensory nerves. The mild irritation that it causes on the skin ‘tires’ out the nerve cells, which can then no longer transmit pain signals to the brain.[3] Various studies have shown that capsicum is effective for pain management and can be used to safely manage all types of chronic pain.[4] It can give people the relief they need from their pain in order to fall asleep, which results in a greater quality of life for people with chronic pain because they can get the rest they need. Emu Oil Emu oil is taken from the fat of the emu bird, which is native to Australia. Emu oil is an effective oil for pain relief and has been used for centuries by native Aborigines. One of the beneficial properties of emu oil is that it contains high levels of linolenic acid. Linolenic acid is known to temporarily ease joint pain and can help people who have rheumatoid arthritis.[5] Massaging Emu Oil into your sore hands can help relieve hand pain. One study has shown that a topical application of Emu Oil is just as effective as taking the NSAID, ibuprofen.[6] You can also use Emu Oil as a carrier oil and add to it some essential oils that also have anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Some good essential oils for pain relief are lavender oil, peppermint oil, rosemary oil, and marjoram oil. Or, you can use a topical pain relief lotion that contains this amazing ingredient, as well as many other ingredients from nature to provide extraordinary results for your pain.

Coriander Oil Coriander oil is an essential oil and is thought to be one of the earliest spices in the world that was used for medicinal purposes. Among the many health benefits of coriander oil is its analgesic properties. Because it is an essential oil, it should always be used together with a carrier oil, for example, coconut oil, emu oil, or jojoba oil. Or, you can search for a topical lotion that contains it. A study published in the International Journal of Biomedical Science showed that, in clinical trials, various extracts of coriander were comparable to morphine.[9] Although these studies were on coriander extracts and not the oil itself, other studies have shown that coriander oil has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties and can an effective treatment for joint pain.[10] Menthol Using menthol on the skin acts in a similar way to capsaicin because it disrupts the pain signals going to your brain. A menthol rub can help relieve pain in the muscles, joints, and tendons of the hand. A study into how effective menthol is in relieving hand pain showed that it helped to relieve pain by 95%. The study said that menthol rubs should be considered as an effective alternative to regular analgesics to manage chronic pain.[11] You can also use the beneficial effects of menthol to relieve pain by adding a few drops of peppermint essential oil to a carrier oil and then massage it into your hands. Also, there are topical pain relief lotions that contain this ingredient because of how effective it is at relieving pain. Arnica Arnica has become a popular salve to help reduce bruising and heal damaged skin. However, arnica can also help relieve pain in the hands that is connected with arthritis, muscles, or the joints. Arnica contains fatty acids and high levels of thymol, which are antiinflammatory. Some studies have shown that arnica works best 2 or 3 days after a muscle strain, so it is good for chronic pain conditions. [12] A study on how it can help people with osteoarthritis deal with pain showed that it was just as effective as ibuprofen.[13] You can buy arnica as a cream, salve, tincture, ointment, and gel, as well as find topical lotions that have included it as an ingredient. Ginger Ginger has well-documented anti-inflammatory properties and is known to help reduce inflammation internally. That is why it is often used to alleviate digestion problems. However, the antiinflammatory properties of ginger can also be used as a topical
application. A study published in the Journal of the Medical Association of Thailand showed that a gel containing ginger extract was just as effective as a NSAID gel containing diclofenac.[14] Diclofenac is a popular NSAID used to treat moderate pain. You can also use raw ginger or add a few drops of ginger essential oil to coconut oil and apply to the affected area on your hand. Coconut Oil Coconut oil has many medicinal properties, including a reduction of inflammation in inflamed muscles and joints. A study published in the journal Pharmaceutical Biology showed that virgin coconut oil has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.[7] Coconut oil has high levels of lauric acid which helps reduce inflammation. Another study that looked into the antioxidant properties of coconut oil found that extracts from it were just as effective as Indometacin, a popular NSAID only available with a prescription. [8] To use coconut oil to relieve hand pain, always make sure that you buy virgin coconut oil. All you have to do is massage some into the affected area. You can also add some essential oils to make it even more effective. Lavender Oil You can also use lavender oil to reduce hand pain by adding a few drops to a tablespoon of coconut or emu oil and then massage into the affected area. This can help to relax the muscles in your hand and help boost blood flow. This has been backed up by a study carried out by the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. They were able to identify the analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties of lavender essential oil showing that it has important therapeutic potential. [15] The study also showed that it is just as effective as tramadol, a drug with side effects which is used to treat chronic pain. Because chronic pain can also cause feelings of stress and depression, the soothing effect of lavender oil can also act as a positive mood enhancer. Epsom Salts If you suffer from hand pain because of arthritis, a strained muscle, or another type of injury, then you can use Epsom salts to relieve the pain naturally. Although there is mostly only anecdotal evidence for its use in relieving pain, many say that it does work. The theory is that magnesium in Epsom salts helps to reduce inflammation and ease pain. You can make a soothing hand bath by filling a large tub of warm water. Then fill with enough water so that your hands are covered, and then add a cup of Epsom salts. Soak hands for 15 minutes.

Juniper Berries

Juniper berry essential oil contains many compounds which can help to reduce pain, especially pain associated with arthritis. As with lavender oil, it also helps to soothe and calm the mind. You can add a few drops of juniper berry essential oil to a tablespoon of emu, coconut, or jojoba oil and then massage into your hand. This can help to relax your muscles, ligaments, and also ease joint pain. Frankincense Frankincense has been called an “herb fit for a king.” It can be used both topically and as a supplement to help reduce pain caused by inflammation. Frankincense extracts have shown to have properties that reduce inflammation and also relieve pain. A study of these extracts showed that they work similar to NSAIDs, but without the harmful side effects.[15] Frankincense essential oil can be added to a carrier oil for a pain-relieving hand massage. Supplements Apart from using natural ingredients to relieve hand pain as a topical application, you can also take supplements that help to reduce inflammation and pain from the inside. These supplements will help to reduce inflammation not just in your hand but also throughout your body. Fish oil supplements can help treat many inflammatory conditions. The omega-3 fatty acids help to block inflammatory compounds in the body. Studies have shown that these supplements are just as effective as ibuprofen.[16] Green tea contains powerful antioxidants which have anti-inflammatory properties. Studies have shown that green tea supplements can help reduce joint damage.[17] Turmeric contains curcumin which is a powerful anti-inflammatory and can help reduce pain.[18] It is also safe to take as a supplement and doesn’t have the damaging side effects of NSAIDs. It is also good to remember that many of the natural ingredients mentioned in this article can also be bought as supplements to help relieve pain. give their heavenly Father 110 percent. Most of the rest, just do what they think will get them into heaven. There are a few, and you know who they are, who want something for nothing. Should you want to learn more about laboring for the Lord, then please come and let us reason together the ways of our Lord. In His Love, Keno
by Keno Shrum
How Hard Do You Labor For God? Do you really work hard? Do you go all out every day and accomplish the most you possibly can? Or do you hold back a bit and work at a more comfortable pace? There is a lot of evidence which suggests that most of us don’t produce more than about 50 percent of the amount we could, if we really put our hearts into it. Several years back, for example, one of the major automobile makers told 500 workers who stamped on body panels that they didn’t have to punch a time clock when they quit work. The could leave any time they had finished stamping out the day’s quota. The workers were delighted, and a very funny thing happened. Several of them soon found ways to do what used to be a full day’s work before lunch. Then they quit for the day. Now being the intellectual individuals they were, it did not take management long to discover that they were now paying a full day’s wages for a half day’s work. Some would argue that point, however, saying they were still doing a full day’s worth of work. I suppose it would depend if you were management or an employee. Management felt the need to increase the quota to the point that a person could not possibly get it done in any less than a full day. This of course enraged the employees who felt they were being punished. Needless to say that this new quota and the short work day ended very soon because both sides were unhappy. Most workers could do more than they were doing. Many of them would be glad to do it if they were paid more. On the other side of the fence, many companies would be glad to pay more if the employees would just do more work. The hard part is getting the two sides together and working out some kind of deal that would benefit both the employee and employer. It seems as though it is very difficult to apply oneself 100 percent to something you have little or no interest in. If your work is simply a job, you will only do what is necessary to keep it. On the other hand, if you love the work that you do, it’s not hard to give yourself totally to your work. This is much the way it is in doing the Lord’s work. Christians who truly love and appreciate what God has done for them, seem to

Bruiser D&H Cattle Co.
By Kelly B. Robbins
bruis.er / (broozer) / noun- One who is tough and aggressive and enjoys a fight. This Oxford University Press Dictionary definition perfectly describes D&H Cattle Company’s bovine contender to the 2016 PBR Built Ford Tough Series World Champion Bull title. “Bruiser is a big, stout, athletic bull,” shared owner H.D. Page. “He really loves what he does and he enjoys coming to work every day. Bruiser is an adrenaline junkie. These bulls get an adrenaline rush just like we do. When you crack the slide, he’s eager to get in there and do the deal. He knows his pattern and he’s going to try to bring them over the front end, and then go left 90% of the time.” Bruiser was third in the standings as of the PBR BFTS summer break in May with an average bull score of 45.28. His last out was at the Young Guns Challenge at the J.W. Hart PBR Challenge BlueDEF Tour event in Decatur, Texas on June 4th. There he took on eighteen year-old young gun phenom and PBR BFTS Rookie of the Year contender Jess Lockwood, who rode this bovine whirlwind for 6.57 seconds before Bruiser outmaneuvered him and sent him flying. Bruiser ended the night with the highmarked bull score of 46.5 points.
That says a lot about this bull’s genetic athleticism. Bruiser’s daddy is 009 Showtime and his mama is Page T8, a daughter of Little Yellow Jacket. D&H Cattle Company has been breeding and raising bucking bulls for nearly 30 years and is owned and operated by H.D. and his dad, Dillon. Their 1,500 acre ranch is on the banks of the Washita River near the small, south central Oklahoma town of Dickson. SweetPro’s Bruiser is just another of the many great “Bred to Buck” bulls that have come out of the D&H Cattle Company wearing the Rocking P brand. Their current bucking stock includes reigning PBR World Champion bull 58X SweetPro’s Long John, 20U Shepherd Hills Tested, Y16 Brutus, 08 Margy Time, 44W Stone Sober, 95X Danutso, 01Z Rocco, 60X No Regrets and 81X American Hustle. “My deal is more about breeding them and raising good bucking calves,” H.D. explained. “My real bread and butter is in the Futurity, the Derby, and the Classic competitions. It just suits me better.”
Following that ride, Jess Lockwood told PBR Senior Writer Justin Felisko that he is already looking for a dream rematch with Bruiser. “That bull bucks, but he feels really, really good,” Jess said. “Air Time bucks and he doesn’t feel good. He is strong, but Bruiser is a dream to get on. I can’t wait.” “Bruiser’s consistency sets him apart from other bulls,” H.D. said. “I don’t think there has ever been a better bull in PBR history than Bruiser. I don’t think he’s the rankest bull in the arena, but I don’t think there has ever been one better. I bucked him a bunch as a two and three year-old. He consistently earned a check every place I hauled him.”
Humps-Horns.com · 21 · August 2016
H.D. and Dillon, with the help of Jackie Hunter, Johna Page-Bland, and Rooster Gilstrap, are real serious about their “Bred to Buck” handle. In the past twelve years, D&H Cattle Company has had one PRCA Bull of the Year, 20U Shepherd Hills tested in 2013. They have had four ABBI Futurity Champions, S5 Stray Kitty in 2004, 347 Crazy Train in 2005, 89Z Grump in 2014, and 397A Frequent Flyer in 2015. And they have produced six ABBI Classic Champions. 13 Big Deal in 2004, S5 Stray Kitty in 2005, 10-5 Crosswired in 2008, 20U Shepherd Hills Tested in 2012, 58X SweetPro’s Long John in 2014, and 32Y SweetPro’s Bruiser in 2015. They are six-time PBR Stock Contractors of the Year, earning that title consecutively from 2001 to 2006, with two PBR World Champion bulls. 790 Mossy Oak Mudslinger was PBR World Champion bull in 2006 and 58X SweetPro’s Long John was PBR World Champion bull in 2015. 32Y SweetPro’s Bruiser was the 2015 PBR Reserve Champion Bull. This amazing resume of champion bulls just proves that D&H Cattle Company has a superior breeding program and they continue to operate one of the most successful outfits in the bucking bull business. According to Probullstats.com, five year-old Bruiser has an 85.11% buck-off percentage and a lifetime PBR average bull score of 44.939. He has 24 round winning outs and 7 rider round wins. The PBR average ride score is 91.607 points for those 7 rides in 47 outs.
declared. “He’s just a big old sweetheart. He’s got the most personality of any bull I’ve been around. He talks to you when you walk up to him and he talks to you when you walk away. He really is a clown. He enjoys people. You swing open his gate and he stomps his feet and acts like he’s going to charge you, then he comes over and wants to be scratched. He’s lots of fun to have around.” “I keep Bruiser by himself,” H.D. continued. “I hauled him to so many Derby and Classic competitions that I just felt it was safer to keep him separated. Bruiser accidentally got put together with Margy Time about six or seven months ago. They had a fight and Bruiser broke Margy Time’s leg.” When I asked H.D. if he thought Bruiser had a shot at the 2016 PBR BFTS World Champion Bull title, he said, “Well, with the new format this year, he’s got as good a chance as any of them. But as you know, it all comes down to just those two outs at the Finals. No matter how good these bulls are, they are all subject to the conditions around them. You don’t really know what to expect. Having the right bull rider on his back will definitely make a difference. It really helps when you have top riders riding them. They just seem to bring out the best in these bulls.” Bruiser- One who is tough and aggressive and enjoys a fight. This is one bull that lives up to his name.
“Since the break, Bruiser’s been making baby Bruisers,” H.D.

By Barbara Pinnella Two of the newest stock contractors to enter the PBR family are Christina and Mike Heald. This was not a foreign arena to them, as both have a rodeo and horse show background. Christina showed western futurity horses, having great success and being nationally seeded. Mike rode bulls and bareback horses and did some team roping, as well. They have been following the PBR almost since its inception, but their careers as stock contractors began officially the beginning of this year. The duo from Pleasanton, California has teamed up with Chad Berger, and together they have already found success. “Christina and I have thought about getting into the PBR as stock contractors for a long time, but partnering with somebody was always the challenge. We kicked it back and forth for years,” Mike told us. “We have a lot of friends in California that are close to the business, so we were educated. Then near the end of the year we just said, ‘Look, it’s time – it’s time.’ “So we did a little bit of research, as you can imagine. We decided
that we really wanted to meet Chad, so we connected with him. We spoke on the phone many, many times over the course of a month or two and finally got together with him in February in Phoenix. “We knew within five minutes that he was the guy we were going to partner with. We could tell that Chad had the love, passion, and the respect for the sport. It was more than a business, it was a life commitment. It was apparent at that moment that we had found our match. We shook on the deal at that time, only about six months ago!” “We just happened to hit it off with the right guys from the start,” Christina added. Mike echoed that feeling. “Not only is he the greatest bull man, but he and his family represent just every positive thing you could expect as people, and in representing the PBR. We connected immediately; we fit like a glove. Since then it’s been like a runaway train, in a wonderful way. We can barely keep up with Chad!” The respect does not stop with Christina and Mike; Chad had his own kind words to say about his new partners. “They are very nice people, friends, and big fans of the sport of bull riding,” Chad stated. “They love the bulls and are very excited to be a part of the PBR. I look forward to being with them for a long time.” The Healds started out with two bulls, but that number has grown a lot. They have partnered with Chad on 14 more bulls, including several young ones, increasing their bucking bull herd to 16. “The two we started with are Crazy Days and Intensified Clyde,” Christina said. “Now we have a whole other herd that we haven’t even named yet, and we’re pretty excited about them. The majority of the new bulls are threeyear-olds.”

“We are looking to work with Chad to build a pen that over the next three, four, five years will really be exciting,” Mike added.
“We just spent the better part of a week up at the ranch in Mandan and hated to pack up and head home!”
Berger is also looking forward to those new bulls.
But it is not only the Berger family connection that appeals to the Healds, but it is the entire PBR community that they enjoy.
“There are some really good ones in there,” Chad said. “I think there are several that could be PBR short-round bulls in the future.” Even though Chad has been PBR Stock Contractor of the Year five times, both Christina and Mike agreed that they have a goal; to make sure that Chad wins that award many more times. Chad laughed when we told him that, commenting “I do too!” But Berger is quick to point out that all of the awards and accolades are not acquired by working alone, and a big part of his successes are his partners. “All of my partners that I’ve been involved with have been with me for years. I am excited to have Christina and Mike as partners and hope to have a long relationship. Without all of my partners I wouldn’t have any Stock Contractor of the Year awards, so they mean a lot to me.” “That’s exactly what we want,” Mike said. “We are having a lot of fun and want to do our part to help Chad continue being successful. We sincerely enjoy being around him. And of course with them it’s a whole family operation, so that includes his wife Sarah, daughters Lacey and Sadie, son John, and son-in-law J.R. Scott.”
“The whole PBR is a wonderful family atmosphere filled with fabulous, passionate, talented, people. We love the bulls, the riders, and everybody involved, period, end of story,” Christina told us. “This is wonderful!” Mike admitted to being a bit surprised by the reception the two of them have received. “To add on to what Christina said, we sort of expected it to be this way, but were a little unsure, being from the outside. Also, by being close to it by knowing people, we had an idea. But since we have become a formal piece of the PBR, we are very humbled at how everyone has just welcomed us in. It truly is like a second family. “We want to do our best to promote the fastest growing and most exciting sporting event that is available today, and give the fans an experience they will never forget.” Both members of this husband and wife team also have full-time careers. Mike is a Managing Director for a large global consulting firm. Christina runs her own photography business.

They admitted that right now the new herd of 14 holds a lot of promise, but they will see what happens over a year or two. After they assess how the new bulls buck, they will probably do some buying, selling, and breeding along the way as well. The bull riding community is lucky to have these two in their family. They are upbeat, friendly, honest, and sincere. But while the pair is having nothing but fun in their new venture, Christina put it all in perspective. “At the end of the day we are still just part owners and Chad is the man running the show,” she said. Mike laughed and said that he is quite content to be Chad’s ‘apprentice’. And they wouldn’t have it any other way.

Editor’s Note - This is the first in an occasional series of articles where Humps N Horns will give you a look behind the scenes at some of the people who work really hard to make sure that the PBR experience is the best that it can possibly be.
PBR fans know the riders, bulls, and stock contractors. They also probably recognize some of those individuals that they see walking around the arena, whether on television or at live events. But there are three ladies who are instrumental in keeping things running smoothly for us, the media. Humps N Horns decided it was time for you to become acquainted with them. They are the Public Relations Dream Team for the PBR.
Denise Abbott –
Vice President of Public Relations and Communications Not having a Public Relations background did nothing to hold back Denise, and even though she attended the Naval Academy, she does not have a college degree. But a lack of those things didn’t matter. During the first half of her working life she worked as an executive assistant in law and the entertainment industry. It was when she became a personal assistant to sports agent Leigh Steinberg, however, that she knew she wanted a career in sports public relations.
“I had no idea, so I asked her where, and she told me the rodeo. I just started laughing,” Denise told us. “Neither of us had grown up around horses or had any exposure to the Western lifestyle. I asked, ‘What do you know about the rodeo?’ Stephanie corrected me and said it was the PBR, so I started watching TV to see what it was about. “I found it very interesting, and told my sister to let me know if they ever have an opening in PR, to let me know. About 10 months into a job I had in Athlete Relations at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, I ran into (then CEO) Randy Bernard, quite literally, at the airport. “He was wearing a shirt with a PBR logo on it, so I mentioned that my sister worked there. He asked who she was and I told him. Two months later they had an opening in PR and I applied. “I was hired as the PR and Marketing Coordinator, but just over a year later I was running the department, based off of, as Randy liked to call it, my PhD; Passion, Hunger and Drive.” Denise eventually moved on, but that ended up being only temporary. Within three years she was back at home as it were, with the PBR. And as she always does, Denise takes her job very seriously, and
She applied for positions at different PR agencies, but was discouraged from moving into that field. She was told that it was a very thankless career, particularly when she would take a cut in pay. Still, her interest did not wane, and she took PR classes on her own to develop her skills, as well as volunteering for events and projects to gain experience. Denise was working for FOX Sports in California before she became involved with the PBR. It was because of her sister Stephanie that she ended up in bull riding. Stephanie called her and asked her to guess where she was going to start working.

believes that rapport with the media is very important. “I feel that my main job is building a good relationship with the media,” she told us. “I am also trying to influence the public’s opinion of the PBR, and the media is the avenue by which I do that. I view the media as a very valuable resource. “I try to be as accommodating as I can to make sure that they get everything they need, so they will not only tell the story that I want them to tell, but to tell the story accurately and thoroughly. “I don’t always deal directly with the public,” Denise continued, “as influencing the public is also done through marketing and advertising. But my influence comes through earned media; TV interviews, newspaper and magazine articles, and the like.” One of the reasons Denise likes working with the media might surprise you. She admitted that she always wanted to work in front of the camera as a television reporter. “When I was young I used to practice saying, ‘This is Denise Abbott coming to you from the White House for CBS News.’ I would walk around the house doing that all the time! But that’s for another dream at another time. “Right now, since virtually my entire career in Public Relations has been around the PBR, I really enjoy when I can secure a story that elevates the profile of the athletes that compete in the sport and makes people take notice. I love educating people about who these men are, because they love their job and what they do very much. “It makes me feel so good, when an outlet like the Players’ Tribune recognizes the bull riders’ worth and support them. MAJOR athletes are covered by the Players’ Tribune. When we worked with them on a feature for J.B. Mauney, it was so interesting to see his reaction. “To see him being impressed by the fact that this group thought he was an amazing athlete and were willing to cover him the way they do star athletes Kobe Bryant, Von Miller, and LeBron James was rewarding. That is one of my most favorite parts of this job; when the bull riders see that, and they enjoy it. A close second would be working with the media and being able to help them get what they need.” When not working, which is rare for all of these women, Denise likes to read, work out, dance, and do spinning. There was a time when she also taught aerobics classes, danced, and competed in fitness competitions, but that is not the case now. “I design hand-knit sweaters, so I knit a lot. There was a time when I thought about starting a business. I have yarn all over the place at my house, and have sweaters everywhere that I still need to assemble.” Denise was really good at knitting those sweaters. So much so that when she met the woman who knitted the sweaters that Bill Cosby wore on his show and wanted to apprentice with her, she was told that she didn’t need to work for her, she needed to be her competition!
But like a lot of the bull riders, who go from the adrenaline rush of the arena to the golf course to unwind, that is what the knitting does for Denise. “It calms me. When I come back from my stressful job, I can just sit there, relax, and knit.” She deserves every moment of that down time. Denise always manages to stay upbeat in the eye of the storm, and is very wellrespected by her peers and everyone else who comes into contact with her.
Jordan Marie Johnson –
Senior Manager of Public Relations Jordan is in her fourth year with the PBR. She started in October of 2012. “My first event was the World Finals that year,” she said. Talk about being thrown into the deep end! “It was trial by fire, but I definitely survived and I’m happy that I’m still here.” While in college at Michigan State University, Jordan studied public relations and communications. Following graduation she began working as an intern in baseball for the Camden Riversharks, an independent league baseball team. “I went in for creative services. I did Photoshop, I ran the game board, conducted interviews and put together videos. Through that I learned a little bit about baseball, but I didn’t immerse myself into it until I got my second job with the Memphis Redbirds, which is the Triple-A team for the Saint Louis Cardinals. “I had to enter everything that happened during the game in the computer pitch by pitch, whether it was an error, who threw to who – everything. I had to put all of that into the Baseball Advanced Media program. “There could be no mistakes because each baseball players’ individual stats came from that program. So I did my homework. I also wanted to know all of the lingo with regard to what those in the sport were saying, and made sure I was prepared at all times.” Jordan knew she wanted to try something different but didn’t know exactly what. When an opportunity came along through a couple of her baseball contacts she jumped at the chance. And although she knew nothing about bull riding, when it was time for her interview, she was honest about her lack of knowledge on the subject.
Humps-Horns.com · 31 · August 2016
“The first two questions I was asked were, ‘What do you know about bull riding,’ and I told them nothing. They then asked me how I liked Colorado and I told them I had never been there. I taught myself baseball; I was unaware of baseball before I worked in it, and I promised them that I would put the same effort into learning about PBR.” Obviously she has done a great job, as Jordan definitely knows her stuff, and there is a lot for her to remember. Just what does her job entail?
Heather Croze –
“Wow, what doesn’t it entail? Well, I am in charge of PR for the central region. That is everything from Texas and Oklahoma to Montana and South Dakota and everywhere in between.
“I moved back, but didn’t have a job for about a year or more. Then I got the job with the PBR. I worked a couple of events in the second half of 2014, and then all of 2015 and will work all of this year,” she told us. “When I first started Denise assigned events to each one of us, and she did it in such a way that nobody was really doing backto-back events.
“We, Denise, Heather and I, put releases together to let people know we are coming into town, contact all of the media to see if we can set up interviews to alert the locals beforehand that we are arriving.
Public Relations Manager Heather has been with the PBR for a shorter period than Denise and Jordan, but her duties are mainly the same – which means she does a lot! This is the second full year for Heather and the PBR. She started in April of 2014. Colorado is an easy fit for her, as she was born and raised there, and lived there up until the time she went away to Murray State College in Kentucky.
“When we get to town we also set up more interviews to make sure everyone is aware PBR is in their city and they need to buy tickets. We work with the media during the events, and then send out releases at the end of each night while also collecting quotes from riders if needed. “Our days can extend anywhere between 4:00 a.m. for early morning TV hits, to sometimes going to bed around 2:00 a.m., once all our job duties are completed,” Jordan continued. “So if anybody thinks that our job is just fun, it is most of the time. It is a blessing and something that I love doing, but it is a LOT of work!” For Jordan, the best part of her job right now is the travel. She loves going to different places and the PBR has certainly afforded her that opportunity. “I’ve been to so many places that I never thought I would get to see or experience. I’ve been to New York to watch the ball drop in Times Square on New Years Eve because of the PBR. I’ve met such wonderful people as well.” Jordan recently moved from Colorado to the H2 ranch in Oklahoma to be with her fiancé Cody Hebert. Since Cody is a PBR stock contractor, Jordan tries to help with the cattle when she can, but she was quick to point out that Cody and C.L Turner do most of the work. “I feed the cattle, but most of the time I’m just trying to pet them or take photos for Hebert Bucking Bulls Instagram (@hebertbuckingbulls). I will marry into the bucking bull business next year,” she laughed, “but I am already so in love with being as much a part of it as I am now, this is truly where I was meant to be. “In my spare time I like to play the guitar and go fishing. I love to cook and bake, and I really enjoy photography as well. Eventually I want to start a photography business.” Our guess is that, between the PBR and those bucking bulls, the photography business will have to wait awhile. But we are also certain that she will succeed at that as well.
“But this year, once WME/IMG bought the PBR, they came up with the regionalizations, so now all the events are divided into regions, the West, the Central, and the East regions. Each region has specifics, with PR being one of those assigned to that specific region. “When I started this year I was in the Central region,” Heather continued. “But there was some shuffling around, so when we start up the second half of the BFTS I will be covering the East region.” Heather has always been interested in PR. Her background was in college athletics, and she did PR for that. “We called it Sports Information or Athletic Communications. It was all pretty much the same thing; write releases, work with teams, update the website, handle media, all of that for college athletics. So that was always my background. “When I moved to Colorado I didn’t know if I wanted to stay in college athletics, but I knew I wanted to stay in sports. So when the PBR came up it was a lot of what I was doing, but it’s a lot different, too. It’s been a learning experience, but I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.”

Heather feels the same way as Jordan, she loves the travel and that is probably the favorite part of the job for her. That also entails getting to know the bull riders a little bit better, and she likes that too.
Play Fantasy Bull Riding at
“We go in a couple of days or sometimes even a week before the event and bring one of the bull riders in. We spend that time getting to know the city and taking them around, doing the PR, doing hospital visits, and just getting them out into the city. I really enjoy that.”
www.classroomcowboy.com
Heather said that they try to make sure the bull riders get to do something different and not just PR work. They try to take them somewhere or do an activity that will be fun for them and allow them to just enjoy themselves for awhile. “Then the event is that weekend and that’s a lot of fun. Sometimes it gets grueling; I was on the road three weeks in February. I was so ready to get home. But I really don’t mind being out on the road, seeing new places, and getting to know the bull riders. I get to see a different side of them, and I like that.” One of the things that Heather really likes when she is not working is just being outside and investigating her surroundings. “I recently went up to the Rocky Mountain National Park. I love going hiking and getting out into the mountains. I like exploring Colorado, because it is such a beautiful place, and I love living here. “I take my dog with me wherever I can as well. I love being back here; my family lives here. It’s great being back.”

When these three ladies are not on the road they are in the office coordinating everything for upcoming events. It is a never-ending job, but one that they all love. The three of them rarely get to be at the same event. One exception to that are the Finals in Las Vegas. Trust this – without Denise, Jordan, and Heather, our jobs would be next to impossible, and we tip our hats to them!

2016 Standings As of August 1, 2016
National Professional Bull Riders Association News As the hot summer sun on June 23 began to set, the National Professional Bull Riders brought 30 bull riders to Bryan, Texas for the 45th Annual Breakfast Lions Club bull riding at the Brazos County Expo Complex. A colorful patriot opening began with the Catalena Cowgirls posting flags and the announcer, Terry Starnes, behind the microphone. It was an action packed night with mutton bustin, mini bareback riding and a bull riding long round with eight (8) bull rides making the whistle and the 8 head short round. After it was all said and done, Hondo Flores from George West, Texas took first place and the Monsoon Silver Trophy Buckle…. Congratulations to Hondo. Following in second place was Jackson Landgraf, Georgetown, Texas, splitting third/fourth, Jonathon Brown and Jamarcus Whiting, Houston, Texas, with fifth place going to Larimey Craigen from Beaumont, Texas. Congratulations to each of our money winners at this event.
