Letter from the Editor
There is definitely a feeling of sadness as we complete this issue. It was just a few days ago in which we learned of the unexpected and tragic passing of Ty Pozzobon. We have some wonderful tributes to Ty’s life and the impact he made on those who had the privilege to be around him. Unfortunately, it sometimes takes a tragic event to remind us of what is truly important in life. Please don’t get so wrapped up in the busyness of life that we forget those who mean the most in our lives. And don’t forget to take some time to let them know how you feel. We were excited to see a new year and a new season of bull riding kicked off. The PBR began their first event with the first PBR Major of the year with the Monster Energy Buck Off in the Garden. Jess Lockwood certainly made a statement by riding 4 out of 4 bulls to win the title, a load of points, and a pile of ca$h. We also have a great article about Jason Aduddell and Aduddell Bucking Bulls in our Bull Pen feature this month. His bulls have let their names be known in the Classic Bull competitions and the BFTS events where they buck. Cut the Cord made pretty quick work at the PBR Finals by bucking off Derek Kolbaba (5.4 seconds) and Stormy Wing (4.8 seconds). Many of the bull riding associations across the country have a full slate of events scheduled over the next few months. You can find these events in the Where’s the Beef on page 44-45 and then have a great time as a family and support these bull riders, contractors, and communities where they take place. Until next time, Terry We found some fans at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo Bulls Night Out! Connie Estes and her grandson, Tully, were proudly wearing their Humps N Horns t-shirts. The Finished Work of Christ…Grace Grace is not just another religious mandate we’ve got to live up to but that’s what religion has turned it into. Grace is The Father’s way of saying “I am good with you”, leading us with His Spirit and leaving it at that.
Because of my thoughts toward my children I understand that it goes against a Fathers nature to punish His children because they don’t hit the mark, tow the line or represent the family in a becoming way. But that’s the messed up message we continue to hear from religion. One way we honor the Growing in our faith and understanding of what was done Father is to buy into His ways and follow His lead. He takes on our behalf through the Finished Work of Jesus Christ will pleasure in children who return love to Him but even when help us live as His disciples in a way that brings liberty and they don’t, they are still His children and they are still His freedom. Religion has left people to live with the frustration pleasure because of The Finished Work of Christ. He will of never being able to measure up and the guilt of thinking never abandon us because of our inability to follow every it’s our duty and responsibility to validate our position with lead He gives us or else Jesus would have never left heaven God. He Validated us through Jesus, the Best He had. to reconcile us to His Father. My desire is to be a responsible son to a Perfect Loving “Read Romans Chapter 8” Father but I know I will never be 100% in doing so. The spin that man puts on God’s Grace toward us when we aren’t Jesus Loves You, totally responsible causes guilt and frustration. Manmade rules and regulations can never be lived up to but Jesus (the Cody Custer rule maker and keeper) took care of our inability to live up to any standard by giving His life. Anything in life, if left at the infant stage, will not produce all that is intended so it makes sense to grow and be more responsible. Whether we do or don’t it does not change the Father’s position, His heart toward us or faithfulness to us.

it comes to a diet that will help a person to deal with an arthritic condition, one of the most common recommendations is to get more Omega-3 fatty acids. With many forms of arthritis, inflammation is one of the biggest problems. Along with having a range of other health benefits, Omega-3 fatty acids can help to reduce the inflammatory response of the immune system. This can be especially important for people that suffer from rheumatoid arthritis because the condition is caused by an autoimmune disorder that triggers an over-active inflammatory response at the joints. By increasing your intake of Omega-3 fatty acids, you can relieve the inflammation that comes with arthritis, and this will reduce the amount of pain and stiffness that you experience. Some studies have even shown that Omega-3 fatty acids can reduce the need for NSAIDs.
8 Secrets to Relieve Arthritis
Millions of Americans suffer from pain and stiffness that is associated with an arthritic condition. For many, the pain is severe, and it has a significant impact on their life; it can cause difficulties with work and even lead to disability. When you talk about arthritis, you are actually talking about several conditions that cause pain, inflammation, and stiffness in the joints. A common misconception is that arthritis is primarily a problem that affects older people, but it can also be an issue for the young. In treating arthritis, doctors commonly recommend medications that are used to relieve pain and combat inflammation. While many of these medications can be effective for relieving pain and restoring mobility, there is more to treating these conditions than just taking pills. Furthermore, some medications can have harmful side effects that may make them a less-than-desirable solution. If you are dealing with the symptoms that accompany arthritis, there are several habits that can help. By making certain lifestyle adjustments and taking the time to care for your health, you can reduce your dependence on medications and find relief for many of the common issues that are associated with arthritis. Consume Omega-3 Fatty Acids Dietary recommendations are some of the most common when it comes to dealing with arthritis. There are nutrients that can be good for managing some of the symptoms, and there are also foods that you should avoid. When
Since our bodies cannot produce Omega-3 fatty acids, it is important for people to make sure that they are included in their regular diet. Among the potential sources, eating fish happens to be one of the best ways to add these compounds to your diet. Tuna, salmon, and sardines are great sources for getting more Omega-3 fatty acids. Soy products are also viable sources of Omega-3 fatty acids. Additional options include taking fish oil supplements. Exercise The pain and stiffness from Arthritis may cause you to avoid physical activity. This response is understandable, but it is actually a mistake. Exercise can be used to manage many of the symptoms that come with arthritis. Regular physical activity can help with pain management and it can also restore and maintain joint mobility. Exercise is important for a person with arthritis because it combats the negative effects of the condition in a number of ways. It builds strength around the joints to improve stability and endurance, it releases pain-reducing endorphins, and it can also work to increase the range of motion for the joints. If you are trying to build an exercise routine that is designed to provide relief for arthritis symptoms, walking and cycling can be great forms of low-impact exercise. You can also try a range of different stretching exercises to improve joint mobility. While exercise can be good for a person with arthritis, it is important to point out that there are certain activities that should be avoided. Sports and exercises that are high-impact can cause more damage and aggravate the symptoms of arthritis. In addition to that, you want to avoid activities that involve repetitive motions.

Vitamin D Vitamin D is an important nutrient for healthy joints and strong bones. It helps your body process calcium, and it is also necessary for a healthy immune system. Many who suffer from arthritis, are often lacking this key nutrient. Studies have shown that people with rheumatoid arthritis are more likely to have a vitamin D deficiency, and there are many arthritis medications that have been shown to contribute to deficiencies in vitamin D. Since this nutrient is important for the health of the immune system and your bones and joints, you need to ensure that you are getting enough in your diet. The first tip for getting more vitamin D is to get more sunlight. Exposure to sunlight causes the body to produce vitamin D, and this is generally considered one of the best ways to make sure that you are getting enough. Just make sure that you do not start spending too much time in the sun; 15-minutes a day should be enough for most people. If you have a vitamin D deficiency, and you do not get enough exposure to sunlight, then you need to consider food sources. Unfortunately, there are not many foods that contain vitamin D in significant quantities, but you do have some options. As is true with Omega-3 fatty acids, oily fish tend to be some of the best sources for vitamin D. To get more of this nutrient, try salmon, mackerel, sardines or halibut. As alternatives, you also have milk, juice, and soy products that have been fortified with vitamin D, or you can start taking supplements. Manage Stress Things like stress and anxiety can affect your health in a number of ways. When it comes to arthritis, one of the key problems with stress is that it impacts your ability to deal with pain. By managing your stress, you can reduce your arthritis pain and make the condition more bearable. As an additional point for people that suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, evidence indicates that stress actually makes the condition worse.
routine is good for managing stress. You can also learn techniques to practice when you feel your stress levels rising. Try Green Tea People have been talking about the health benefits of green tea for a long time. It is rich in anti-oxidants and it can work as an effective anti-inflammatory. While other teas have these compounds that can be good for fighting inflammation, green tea is generally considered the best for people that are living with arthritis because it has the highest levels of polyphenols. Polyphenols are plant-based compounds that work to promote a healthy immune system, and they have also been shown to work well at reducing inflammation. In addition to that, some studies have shown that they can help to preserve cartilage. The research is still out on all of the benefits of green tea for arthritis, but its properties as an antioxidant and its effect on inflammation have shown promise. Try drinking one or two cups of green tea a day to see if it can make a difference in your inflammation, stiffness, and pain. Get a Massage Everybody understands that a massage can be great for relaxation and it can relieve tense, sore muscles. However, massage can also have a number of benefits for people that suffer from arthritis pain. Depending on the type of arthritic condition that you have, and the progression, massage can be used to provide pain relief, it can work to restore mobility to the joints, and it can even promote healing. Additionally, massage can work to increase circulation to the affected area and it is good for relieving stress, which can also help deal with the symptoms of arthritis. If you are considering massage as a means to improve your arthritis symptoms, there are some things to consider. To start, you want to make sure that you visit a skilled professional. A physical therapy center is one of the best choices for someone receiving a massage for their arthritis. As an additional option, there are self-massage techniques that you can learn.
Stress may be a part of life that is hard to avoid at times, but it is important to not let it get away from you. As an arthritis sufferer, being over-stressed is only going to make your condition even worse. The worsening of your symptoms is likely to cause even more stress, and this can get you into a monotonous cycle that negatively affects your life.
Along with massage, there are other types of complementary treatment that can work for relieving arthritis symptoms like hot and cold therapy. Many people have also expressed positive results from receiving acupuncture to deal with their arthritis. You also have a number of topical lotions, creams, or gels that can work to relieve pain exactly where it hurts.
If you have arthritis, there are options to relieve stress. Simply taking time out from the day to relax can help to reduce stress. You could also try meditation or controlled breathing. Establishing an exercise
Sleep Habits It is common for arthritis sufferers to have trouble sleeping. Pain

makes it difficult to sleep, and the stiffness can make it hard to get comfortable enough to find sweet slumber. Not only that but once you fall asleep, the pain might wake you up before you have a chance to get enough restorative sleep.
acids can be good, you should make sure to decrease your intake of Omega-6 fatty acids. It is not something that you want to avoid altogether, but most people do consume a higher intake of Omega-6 fatty acid than they should, and it causes an increase in inflammation.
The lack of sleep for a person with arthritis can be a real problem. Sleep is vital for your health in many ways and if you don’t receive enough you will have a harder time dealing with pain. As you lose sleep, the pain becomes worse, resulting in even more sleep issues, and can lead to increased stress levels.
In addition to foods that contain Omega-6 fatty acids, you also want to be careful when it comes to consuming foods that are high in sugar, refined flour, fried foods, processed foods, saturated fats, and alcohol. Many of these foods trigger the release of chemicals that lead to inflammation. By cutting them out of your diet, you can reduce the amount of pain and stiffness that occurs at your joints. Improving the quality of sleep for an arthritis sufferer can be difficult, but there are some steps that you can take. To start, you want to maintain a regular sleep schedule. Even if the pain is keeping you awake, do not allow yourself to get out of bed and start doing things. Stay in bed, and try to fall asleep. Your sleeping position may also affect your ability to sleep. You may have slept in one position for your entire life, but with the onset of arthritis, this position might place pressure on your joints. Depending on the joints that have problems, an adjustment to your sleeping position might help. Your mattress may also be a problem. When the mattress is too firm, it can put pressure on the arthritic joints, which will increase pain and discomfort. You want your mattress to be firm enough to provide adequate support for your joint, but you do not want it to be so firm that it causes pressure on the joint. As an additional point, you might consider putting a pillow under the joint in question. This can relieve pressure resulting from your mattress or sleeping position. If you want to improve your sleep, there are some other considerations that might help. Regular exercise can be good for burning energy, making it easier to sleep at night. You also want to avoid taking any caffeine or eating a large meal as it gets close to your bedtime. Foods to Avoid Much of the advice concerning food and arthritis tends to focus on foods that are beneficial to include in your diet. However, there are also foods that can make arthritis symptoms worse. If you want to plan a diet that will help you deal with the problem, you should consider the foods that help, as well as the foods that cause problems. While increasing your intake of Omega-3 fatty

for the better, let’s work to change them. When the circumstances don’t meet our concept of ideal, and we can’t change them, let’s learn to accept them and resolve to move forward with the strength God supplies. In all matters, we must “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness” (Matthew 6: 33). Because, as another one of my favorite “profound” questions reminds us, a hundred years from now, what will “it” matter? We worry about things that will pass into oblivion, and sometimes ignore those matters that have eternal consequences. A hundred years from now, it won’t matter that my car has a few scratches on it, or my water heater went out. What will matter is whether or not I have devoted myself to God and His Will. It is what it is.
by Keno Shrum
It Is What It Is
In HIS love,
A friend of mine, wise and astute beyond his years (so he tells me), has shared his newly discovered motto with me: “It is what it is.” Ok, so I have thought that a few times before, but it is one of those simple statements that forces us back to reality at times when we may feel overcome by our circumstances and disappointments in life. When things aren’t exactly as you would desire them to be, you can become focused on reality by telling yourself, “It is what it is.”
Keno Shrum
excerpt by T. Doy Moyer via The Jackson Drive Reporter, Jan. 10, 2010
Circumstances are what they are. There are some things we can change, and some things we can’t (we are getting more profound as we go). Our problem is that we often expend more worry and energy on the things we can’t change; and this, in turn, can become a stumbling block to our spiritual growth and joy. “And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life?” (Matthew 6:27). Paul’s own circumstances were often less than ideal, and beyond his control, yet his attitude remained stable: “I have learned to be content in whatever circumstance I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13). If I may venture a loose paraphrase: It is what it is, I have learned to deal with “it” through God’s help. “Moses My servant is dead.” So spoke the Lord to Joshua in (Joshua 1:2). Joshua knew this already; they had been mourning for days. But sometimes we need a reminder of the simple truth about reality. Essentially, God was telling Joshua, “Moses is gone, and you can’t change that now or have him back. Now it’s time to get up and go take the land of promise.” In other words, “it is what it is, and you have to work with “it” the way it is.” The only option is not to accept reality. People do sometimes go through phases of “denial.” They do not feel mentally able to accept what “is.” It hurts too much perhaps. But if we will ever “arise and cross over this Jordan” in our lives, we must learn to accept the facts and circumstances of life as they are. It takes courage. It takes resolve. But, it must be done. “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your request be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6, 7). God gives us the tools to be able to deal with all of our circumstances, including the painful ones. He wants us to cast our cares on Him, pray about them, and then let Him grant us peace in our hearts. The solution to problems is not denial. We should learn to admit reality, then work with it as it is. When there are matters we can change

Aduddell Bucking Bulls by Kelly B. Robbins
Folks in the bull riding business are just different. From the riders who love to test their skill and experience the adrenaline rush of climbing aboard a bovine tornado, to the stock contractors who work long and hard to breed and raise the best bucking bulls possible, they just seem to be cut from a different mold. The “toughest sport on dirt” has been around a long time and is chock full of talented and diverse people. It has been that way since its beginning in the 16th century where contests called charreadas were held testing ranch and horsemanship skills on the haciendas of Old Mexico. It eventually moved northward into Texas and California in the mid-1800’s and Mexican and Anglo ranch hands worked together and competed in charreada-style events. Fast forward to the mid-1900’s and bull riding became more structured when the Cowboy’s Turtle Association was formed in 1936. The name was changed to the RCA (Rodeo Cowboy’s Association) in 1945, and then to the PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboy’s Association) in 1975.
people. I run about twenty head of cows on a little place in northern Oklahoma. My friend John Eslick watches over my herd, breeding and doctoring the calves.” “For me to make it work,” Jason continued, “it takes a lot of partners and a group effort. Thatcher has become a vital part in making this all work. He helps feed the cows and haul them to the practice pen. He also owns three bulls of his own, which he is raising to compete in the junior futurities.” “I’m currently partnered with Dennis Owens,” Jason explained further. “Dennis’ step son Sam Wyatt will haul my bulls for me this year. I’ve also partnered with my good friend Dillon Page. We coowned Shepherd Hills Trapper, who was eventually sold to Circle T,
In 1992, twenty of those talented, diverse, “different” people gathered in a motel room in Scottsdale, Arizona, each throwing $1,000 into the pot with a goal to create something better for future generations. These men of vision and passion took a risk to make a better future for the sport they live for and love. The PBR (Professional Bull Riders) has become the world’s premier bull riding organization. Jason Aduddell is a man cut from that same mold. His passion for the sport of bull riding and breeding good bucking bulls helps him juggle fatherhood and owning three businesses. He is partnered with some very talented, diverse people to be able to do all he does and still accomplish his goals as a stock contractor. Brinlaw Roofing is the residential roofing company Jason has owned for thirty years. He also owns Aduddell Properties and Aduddell Bucking Bulls. Being dad to his fifteen year-old son, Thatcher, is the high point of Jason’s life. “With my son’s football, basketball and other activites, and my roofing and real estate businesses, I don’t have time to go up and down the road,” Jason said. “I have to rely on partnerships with good

and then was included with Asteroid in the three-bull deal that went to Chad Berger.” “This proves that even if a person can’t go up and down the road every weekend, they can still be involved in the bull business to a great extent,” Jason said. Jason got started in rodeo when he was twelve years old. His mother, Sherry, married Phil Sumner, owner of Sumner Rodeo. During his teenage years, Jason worked with Phil and developed a love for stock contracting, especially the bulls.
According to Probullstats.com, Cut the Cord has a 100% buckoff percentage and an average bull score of 43.08. “Shepherd Hills Trapper is one of the rankest and best bulls I ever raised,” Jason said, “but Cut the Cord has been every man’s dream. He’s the bull everybody would love to have. He’s been as solid as they come and he’s never had a bad out.” “Thatcher is actually responsible for Cut the Cord’s name,” Jason chuckled. “When he was twelve, he was playing a video game and I told him to go take a shower, about five times. By the sixth time, I just took a pair of scissors and ‘cut the cord’ to his game. Well, he took his shower and I had a name for my bull!” “I’ve had really good success working with bulls,” Jason concluded. “But I’m no different than 500 other guys out there. We’re all just trying to raise the best bucking bulls that we can. I really appreciate that y’all are taking the time to write about the little guys like me.”
Austin Meier rides Circle T’s Shepherd Hills Trapper for 90.75 points during the fifth round of the 2012 PBR World Finals.
“Our claim to fame is Bodacious,” Jason revealed. “We raised him and hauled him until he got too big and too active. Sammy Andrews is a good friend of Phil, and Sammy bought Bodacious. Sammy would send us twenty-five or so bulls a year back in the early nineties, and we would start those for him. Sammy used us as the minor leagues to get his bulls ready for the next level.” Jason began raising his own bulls in 1996. He bought five cows from Larry Kephart and was on his way. “Because I only have about twenty head of cows now, I only get eight or ten bull calves a year,” Jason shared. “I do a lot of mixing. I’ve never stuck to one specific bloodline. But my percentage has been pretty good for the small amount of cows I run. Some of the bulls that I’ve raised that have gone on to the NFR or PBR Finals are French Fry, Tater Tot, Bo Jammin, Tea Time, Shepherd Hills Trapper, and Cut the Cord.”
“My favorite bull right now is 1206 Cut the Cord,” Jason declared. “He’s out of a Houdini son Down Time and a Mudslinger daughter, Friendly Franny, which Dillon Page let me use. He is solid and automatic. He’s never had a bad out and you can depend on him every time. Cut the Cord was a 2016 PBR BFTS Finals bull and he’ll be a PBR BFTS short round bull this year.”

Jess Lockwood By Barbara Pinnella
Wins First PBR Major of the Season As any dedicated bull rider would, young Jess Lockwood had plans on moving up from his 2016 season, and that is not to say that he had a bad year. He finished in eighth place in the BFTS standings and was PBR’s Rookie of the Year. But Jess did not have a good Finals. He was unable to cover even one bull, and that can eat away at you. A nagging injury to his riding hand did not help matters, but he makes no excuses. The best road to take after a showing like that is to come back strong. That is exactly what he did, winning the opening event of the year, the Monster Energy Buck Off at the Garden. Lockwood was also the only man to ride all four of his bulls, splitting the win for the first round with Mason Lowe and coming second in Round 2. But his favorite ride was not the one in that opening round where he split that victory, but rather the ride on Naughty List, owned by Jenkins Cattle Company, in the Championship Round.
“The last ride was probably my favorite; the one I won the event on. It wasn’t the prettiest ride, I had to hold onto the side of him and just grit it out the last couple of seconds. To ride all four bulls was a huge confidence booster, and I had my family there with me – my mom and cousin – so it was just a great weekend. You can’t start the season much better than that!” Also important in his line of work is the fact that he is pretty healthy going into the new season. “My hand’s feeling good and I’m just excited for the season. I rested my hand during the break but still worked out really hard to get ready for the season. But I didn’t compete at all during the time off.” For those who don’t know or might not remember, Jess tore the ligaments in that left hand while competing in Nampa, Idaho the beginning of October.
Humps-Horns.com · 20 · February 2017
When we spoke with Jess back in May of last year he was down in Texas at Cody Lambert’s ranch. That was the same this time, and he is still just as excited about being there as he was the first time we talked about it.
Lockwood does not get on any practice bulls during the week. He rests up between events, which obviously works for him. He has always done it that way, and you can’t argue with success.
“I’m back home a lot (Volborg, Montana). I just came down to Texas three weeks ago, and I’ll stay until after the American, which is the middle of February. Then I will go home to help calve out some cows. I love working on the ranch, being out in the country and doing something other than bull riding. It helps keep my head clear.
So where does he go from here? Well, after winning that event in New York he walked out number one in the World, which is exactly where he would love to be at the end of 2017. Humps N Horns wishes him the best of luck this season. Photos courtesy of PBR
“But going to Texas is still working out great,” he continued. “To be around Cody each day, as well as Justin McBride and J.W. Hart who also come over; when you surround yourself with people like that it makes you ride better and better yourself in every way possible.”

By Barbara Pinnella Ty Pozzobon was a great bull rider and one of the best to come out of Canada. He had superb credentials in his chosen profession. Ty qualified four times for the PBR World Finals, 2016, 2014, 2013, and 2012. He was a three-time qualifier for the PBR Canada National Finals. Those came in 2013, 2012, and 2010. His first big accomplishment came in 2010, when he was named the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association’s Rookie of the Year. That was his first year competing in sanctioned events in Canada. He then traveled to the States to ride on the PBR tour full time in 2011. Like any bull rider, there were ups and downs during Ty’s career, which included both super rides, and injuries and lay-off time. But last year was a banner year for Pozzobon. In October he won the PBR Monster Energy Canada Tour event that was held in British Columbia, and his 89 points tied the highest score for the entire tour. A week later he followed that up by becoming the 2016 PBR Canada champion. By doing so, Ty won a champion’s buckle, a cool $25,000 bonus, and a ticket to the BlueDEF Finals that were held in Las Vegas the weekend before the BFTS World Finals. Pozzobon opted to not ride in the BlueDEF, aiming instead for those World Finals. He broke his riding hand in the first round of the last regular event of the season in Tucson and wanted to give himself a
bit more time. That proved to be a good decision for him. Ty rode his first four bulls, splitting the second round, which featured the eliminator pen of bulls, with 2008 World Champion Guilherme Marchi. Both men put up a score of 89.50. The bull that Pozzobon rode that night was Big Cat, who is owned by Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Heald Pro Bulls. Christina and Mike Heald got to spend some time with Ty after his big ride on their bull, and they shared some of those moments with us. “Christina and I had only met Ty a couple of times,” Mike said. “But fate and destiny brought us together with that win on Big Cat at the Finals, and 30 minutes later we are all on the stage at PBR Rock Bar being interviewed and receiving our buckles!” Christina remembered that night fondly. “It was just a magical night. He never won the PBR World Championship, but that night he faced the top 40 guys in the world and the top 40 bulls in the world – it was the eliminator pen. To me, and Mike as well, he was the World Champion for that night. RIGHT: Ty Pozzobon rides Big Cat for 89.5 points to split the win in Round 2 at the 2016 PBR World FInals. “He was so happy,” Christina continued. “He was smiling from ear to ear. It was a major milestone in his life. The fact that we had a chance to share that with him and be a little part of it was really special. He was a wonderful young man.”

Another thing that they will always have as a great memory is a lovely photograph of Big Cat and Ty that was given to them by friends. It had meaning before, and will now carry even more treasured memories. After riding those four bulls in a row at the Finals he set a new goal for himself – to be the first Canadian to win the World Finals. No, that didn’t happen, but he certainly made his home country proud with what he was able to accomplish, finishing up fourth in the Finals. But as Christina and Mike have already alluded to, beyond his accomplishments inside the arena, Ty was a great person. Threetime Canadian Bull Rider Champion and winner of the $100,000 finale at the Calgary Stampede in 2012, Chad Besplug was also a long-time friend and traveling partner of Pozzobon. “Ty was quite a bit younger than me, so the first year he turned pro was the first time I met him. I fell in love with the kid right away. I could tell straight away he had something special. I would always try to find the best people to be around, and I could tell that that’s what he was. “We started traveling together, along with Tanner Byrne and Tyler Thomson. That was one of the most fun years rodeoing that I’ve ever had. Ty, Tanner and I made the PBR Canadian World Finals together that year as well. We talked about that just recently, about how much fun we had.” Besplug also has a production, promotion, and entertaining company, Alpha Bull, that partners with the PBR in producing some of their sanctioned events. Ty had just been signed by Alpha Bull. “It was something that we had been talking about for maybe six months,” Chad told us. “We spent a lot of time together in the last half a year, so I was very lucky that I got to spend so much time with him outside the world of rodeo. He was special.” Another person who knew Ty for many years was the official photographer for the PBR, Andy Watson. He first met Ty back in 2010 at the Canadian Finals. “I’ve known him pretty much from day one to hanging out at the Finals with him back in November,” Andy told us. “He was always a light in the room, he was always laughing. He had that loud, infectious laugh, just a true belly laugh all the time. Everybody gravitated to him and wanted to be with him. He was just a guy that you enjoyed being around. “But I think that the biggest thing with Ty was that he was the light in the locker room. You’d look in there and the other guys would just be gathered around him, and everyone would be laughing. He was that guy all the time.”
Jess Lockwood admitted that he had not been around Pozzobon very much, but he too realized that Ty was an exceptional kind of person. “I didn’t know Ty too well. I came around so young and he was just coming back from injury. But the little bit of time I spent around him I know that he was a kind and caring guy, and he would do anything to help you out, even if he didn’t know you very well. He just wanted to be everyone’s friend – and he was!” Pozzobon had plans, hopes, and dreams, which made this loss all the more difficult to accept. He did not share his fight with the demons within and continued on with his outwardly normal life. For his family and friends, may God bless each and every one of you. Ty, we hope you have found peace. Everyone please remember, we often never really know what battles our friends and loved ones are fighting within themselves. Be kind and listen, especially to those words not actually spoken.

According to a statement released by the Pozzobon family, Ty had been dealing with depression and the effects of concussions in the time leading up to his unexpected death. Many people have dealt with depression in their own lives or the lives of those they love. Unfortunately, depression and mental illness can be a very difficult battle to fight. Although it can be difficult, it does not mean that it is impossible. For those who struggle with depression, it can easily become a vicious cycle. In order to feel better and cope with the depression one would need to be active and engage in some activities that help stay in a positive frame of mind. However, when a person is feeling down or depressed the natural inclination is to withdraw from others and stay isolated from even family and friends. This could then contribute even more negative feelings and thus the cycle continues. Our goal at Humps N Horns is to provide some degree of help to those who may be engaged in this battle and the feelings and actions that occur as a result. When this challenge is combined with the stereotypical macho cowboy image, it can be even more difficult to reach out for help. Most people who face this challenge usually feel like they are alone and they are the only one who faces this type of struggle. Please understand that many people face these same obstacles and you are never alone. There are many places one can turn for help and resources that can provide assistance against this terrible illness.

Other organizations that could be of value in the fight against depression are the National Institute for Mental Health and the National Alliance on Mental Illness. An important first step to find treatment resources could always be the local emergency room. The most important resource is just to reach out and not suffer in silence. Bullmania Klamath Falls Article and photos by Phillip Kitts/ Avid Visual Imagery
25 Years! In the last quarter-century, our great country has witnessed and experienced six Presidential elections, advancements in technology and major changes in society and culture. And, during this time, one thing has remained constant. A bull ride, perfectlynamed BullMania which commemorates the end of one year and the start of the new year, in true western-lifestyle heritage. BullMania, located in the Pacific Northwest and nestled in Klamath Falls, Oregon began as a local-based bull riding event and has progressed to a major celebration for local fans and businesses, along with some of the top contestants in the sport of rodeo. In addition to comedic acts performed by the well-known barrelman, JJ Harrison, and top-of-the-line rodeo announcer, Scott Allen, the never-ending stream of visitors just for the event are a great asset to the community.
This brings us to the man who produces Bull Mania- Jamie Berg, who has poured his heart and soul into every crevice of the event in order to provide “something for everyone”, which is what brings people back, year after year. Just walking into this arena, you can feel both the passion for the event as well as the deep-seeded dedication to everything this event is about. Surrounded by a top notch committee, the end result of their preparations has resulted in an event that has thrived for a quarter of a century and will thrive for another 25 years. December 31, 2016 marked BullMania’s 25th Anniversary which was combined with New Year’s Eve festivities and did not disappoint the capacity crowd. These fans are so dedicated that they braved the cold to just to satisfy their passion for rodeo and to be thrilled by the additional events of Wild Horse Racing, Saddle Cow Races and Miniature Bareback Riders. In two sections of bull riding, two of the top names in the industry, Jordan Spears (NFR qualifying bull rider) and Jory Markiss (qualifier for PBR World Finals and ERA World Championships) ignited the crowd and the excitement did not fade as the competition in ranch saddle bronc kept the energy alive all through the night. Jamie told Humps N Horns, “It was important to bring in more events to keep the energy up, so we added the ranch bronc event which has kept the crowds attention and energy for the whole night”. As the dust settled on the evening, Alex Guzman managed to put up the high score of the night which included a 90-point ride during the short round. Jon Crane walked

away with the Ranch Saddle Bronc championship which he won after riding both broncs for the night. The best part of the night came with the intense amount of pure celebration, not only from those who walked away with a check, but the fans. From the opening to the close the amount of energy never waivered.

In Memory of
Ty Pozzobon Chasing a Dream by Jill vanEgmond Editor’s Note: This article originally appeared in the April 2016 issue of HNH. In light of the tragedy that has occured in the Pozzobon family, we have decided to run this article again as a tribute to Ty’s life.
Bull riders don’t let the fear of getting hurt stop them from doing what they love, riding bulls. It’s in their blood. In fact it might be the threat of injury and the adrenaline rush that comes from a successful ride that keeps bull riders coming back for more. Getting hurt was the last thing on Canadian born Ty Pozzobon’s mind when he started riding calves at a very young age on the ranch his dad and Nono (Italian for Grandpa) ran in Merrit, British Columbia. Ty grew up seeing old pictures and hearing stories of when his father and uncle rode bulls. He was born to ride.
Growing up his parents gave him the opportunity to play any sport he wanted and bull riding wasn’t the only sport where he excelled. Ty also played hockey and was offered scholarships in both hockey and bull riding. With the support of his parents and family, he chose bull riding and has never looked back. “Having to choose between hockey and bull riding was really a no brainer for me. I loved hockey and it was really good to me, but I always knew that I was going to be a bull rider. I remember being asked by my teachers in grade school what I was going to be when I grew up and the looks on their faces when I responded with bull rider.” Two of Ty’s favorite riders as he was growing up were Justin McBride
“I was eight years old when I first started riding steers,” said Ty. “My first practice steer was named Hershey. He was just a dairy steer. The first time I rode him we didn’t have a chute, all we used was a panel and squeezed him up against the fence so he wouldn’t move around too much.” Ty gives credit to his dad for making him a successful rider. “He always told me growing up that he would back me all the way doing this and he did. I always had a place to practice and bulls to get on. When I was sixteen I started going to Gary Leffew’s ranch and that helped make me the bull rider I am today. When I was eighteen I lived a summer with Tanner Girletz, helped feed bulls for my rent and he took me under his wing, showed me the ropes and got me to my first Canadian Finals. Moving to Odessa, Texas to attend college I didn’t know which way was north or south, Randy Quartieri helped me get settled, became one of my best friends and married me and Jayd. I have met so many good people riding bulls and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.”
Humps-Horns.com · 32 · February 2017
and Chris Shivers. “I can remember getting into my first Built Ford Tough event and seeing Chris Shivers rope hung on the fence. I kind of had to pinch myself. It was a pretty cool feeling to go from watching him ride as I was growing up and studying his videos to riding in the same events as him.” Ty was the 2010 rookie of the year in Canada and in 2012 won the PBR Canada Finals and was the Season Leader of Pro Rodeo Canada. He holds several rodeo wins under his belt; Cody Stampede, St. Paul Rodeo, Ponoka, Armstrong, Strathmore, Williams Lake and twice was runner up in the Calgary Stampede. Along with these he has been to the PBR World Finals three times and made the short round in finals twice. In 2012 Ty met Jayd, the woman who became his wife on October 11, 2015. Ty walked down the aisle on crutches due to a broken femur. Jayd’s father was a stock contractor so she grew up around the sport and knew the dangers of being a bull rider. Ty said, “I have had some bad luck in my career when it comes to injuries, but she supports me through the tough times and the good times.” Injuries play a significant part in the sport of bull riding and Canadian born Ty Pozzobon has definitely seen his share. On November 14, 2014 during the first round of the PBR Canada Finals, Ty Pozzobon had a wreck that not only could have ended his career as a professional bull rider, but could have ended his life. Ty suffered a serious brain injury during his dismount when Boot Strap Bill, the bull he had ridden giving him 86 points in the round, stepped on his head breaking his helmet, leaving him unconscious for nearly 20 minutes and waking up as he was being transported to the hospital. “I have family and friends that still refuse to watch the wreck, it’s a blessing that I’m alive and well today.”
anything. He’s the same to everyone he meets.” This year Ty is focusing more on the rodeo than PBR. The cowboy he is traveling with is 37 year old Beau Hill, another great bull rider who is the man Ty looks up to most, “He is an awesome dude in the arena and out. I just turned 24 and seeing Beau so successful at 37 makes me think I can make it to 34. When I retire from competition I plan on raising bulls. I have been investing in bulls since my first pro rodeo in 2010 and now have eighty head of animals.” When asked if he would encourage people to support the Rider Relief Fund he responded, “Anyone who loves the sport should support the Rider Relief Fund. They make it possible for cowboys like me to keep going after a bad accident. They really live up to the name Rider Relief because as I was sitting at home with no income, I realized how much is spent on everyday needs. They helped me through those times and made it possible for me to get back on my feet and go back to chasing my dream.” “I will definitely get more involved with Rider Relief Fund and other bull riders and bullfighters should too, because in our sport we don’t know what the next ride is going to bring and anything can happen.” “The Rider Relief Fund made it so I could rest comfortably at home while I was healing and return to the sport of bull riding with a clear mind and less worries. It’s a true relief knowing that professional cowboys like me have such a great organization to turn to in times of need like mine.”
“The first 2 weeks afterward were a complete blur, I slept the days away. I was supposed to return to the Built Ford Tough Series in January, but with the state I was in there was no way I could do so. February came quickly and I still had not returned to bull riding. My income stopped in November and I was quickly beginning to worry about finances.” “I had heard multiple moving stories from people being helped by the Rider Relief Fund in the past and figured I would reach out to them. I had always heard how great the organization was, but I was about to find out first hand. The awesome staff responded to me immediately, helped me through the process and provided help with my finances. Everything piled up doctor bills, mortgage and everyday life expenses. I can’t express my appreciation for their help when I was in a time of need.” “I love bull riding and everything that comes with it; the traveling, the lifestyle and all of the great friends I have made. It’s cool to be surrounded by such great friends that are the greatest bull riders in the world like Tanner Byrne and Douglas Duncan. Tanner and I grew up seeing each other ride in the amateurs and now we’re best friends. Douglas was someone I always looked up to and he’s been the exact same way to me from the start when he didn’t know who I was. Some guys you have to prove yourself to before they will give you respect but Douglas is awesome, you don’t have to prove
