Letter from the Editor

It’s hard to believe that we have already rolled over the calendar to a new year. I know the more seasoned citizens say that time flies when you get older but I feel like time already goes by pretty fast, as it is. The Wrangler National Finals Rodeo has wrapped up in Las Vegas and the 2023 World Champions have been crowned. I’m sure those ten days looked vastly different than Stetson Wright anticipated after he had to withdraw due to injury following the second round. Hats off to Wright as he handled the setback like a true champion and earned his fifth consecutive All-Around Championship.

Ky Hamilton made the most of his opportunity with an outstanding performance over the ten rounds of the NFR. He earned his first gold buckle as the World Champion Bull Rider. Congratulations to both men and all the 2023 World Champions. We hope you enjoy the December issue of Humps N Horns. We wish you and your family a healthy and prosperous new year. Until next time, Terry

No Pressure in Our Sonship Christianity (through humans ways) has been portrayed as something designed to tame humans with a list of don’t do and stop doing. That’s not it at all. I believe the goal of Him loving us is for us to have Peace in ourselves. That in itself releases us from unrealistic requirements that none of us are able to keep. His Peace will help us be productive in our own lives and then we are able to impart that same Spirit to others around us. The Father’s desire is for His children to walk out our relationship with Him so that we will have His vision, His purpose as well as the liberty to really live. Jesus was given purpose and direction through close relation to His Father. The Father’s plan was only carried out due to Jesus hearing from and being obedient to what the Father said to Him. In order for us to finish the plan that He has for each of us, our personal relationship with the Father must be active. Only then will we determine to walk out what we are hearing from Him. If we don’t allow The Father’s imput in our lives we will miss His “Perfect” plan for us. If we choose to press in close to the Father the perfect plan for our lives will come to pass. It would be a great tragedy for us to miss that plan. His Spirit continually builds us up but He also gives His children space. He always leaves the choice to stay close or to stray in our hands, with no unhealthy pressure. The bonus is that he’ll never leave us. Jesus Loves You!

RIDER RUNDOWN with...

Tanner Christian By Katlin Truelsen CAC Media Group

The 2023 Junior World Finals brought some outstanding young talent to Las Vegas including 16-year-old Tanner Christian from Woonsocket, South Dakota. Christian is a firsttime qualifier, securing his spot at an Iowa event in Winterset. Christian comes from a big family, four brothers, and two sisters, but he is the only one involved in rodeo. FH & DB: Okay Tanner we are currently sitting here on a Saturday night in Las Vegas, and you just finished riding during your round at the Junior World Finals. How is everything going for you so far?

TC: It is going well. I like it out here. FH & DB: And how did you get involved in bull riding? TC: I got involved because of Mason Moody. He lives about nine miles from my place, and he invited me out to get on some bulls. I talked it over with my parents and they thought it was a good opportunity, so I went to his place and started riding a few calves. FH & DB: And how long ago was that? TC: It was back in 2019. I was talking to Mason after a football game about how to get started and he invited me over. FH & DB: So, you haven’t been riding that long. Is it your firsttime out here in Las Vegas? TC: Yeah, this is the first time I have qualified out here. FH & DB: Is it a lot different than back home? TC: Vegas? Yeah, the city is way different than back home! And the bulls are bigger out here. FH & DB: Talk about that a bit. You said you started riding calves, what has it been like to transition to these bigger bulls? TC: When you are riding calves, they don’t know a whole lot, so they just do whatever they want. These bigger bulls have been around a bit more, so they are a little more honest in what they do. Riders have a better idea of what they might get with these guys.

Tanner Christian 16, from Woonsocket, SD

FH & DB: How did you go about preparing for the physical and mental challenges of the bulls you are riding in Vegas?

Humps-Horns.com · 9 · January 2024

TC: My boss helps me out a lot with that. He has bulls and horses and just being around them, every day helps you develop the right frame of mind. It makes you more aware of them and what they do naturally, which helps you when you prepare to ride.

TC: I qualified through an event in Winterset, Iowa. We drove down there, and I was able to make it through.

FH &DB: How does bull riding figure into your daily life?

TC: I have made a lot of friends through bull riding. It is more than friendships. These guys really are family. Whenever someone is down, everyone comes together to pick you back up. It is awesome.

TC: It is all a part of being around the ranch and handling livestock. I get the chance to be around bulls and I am lucky to have that opportunity. FH & DB: What are some of the challenges you have faced with bull riding this past year? TC: Some of my biggest challenges this year have been finishing bulls but also finding good events to go to that have a higher caliber of bull but aren’t out of my ability range. There is a big difference between getting on bulls at a bull riding event rather than a 4-H rodeo. The bulls at an actual bull riding event are better bulls to get on because they tend to be a lot higher quality. FH & DB: So how do you prepare for those different types of situations? TC: I try to get on more practice bulls at home and I ride horses a lot, which can help me with balance. FH & DB: Talk to us a bit about your qualifier to come out and ride in Vegas.

FH & DB: Did you have a lot of friends with you at the qualifier? How do they impact your ability to ride?

FH & DB: We have heard that from a lot of the guys we talked to this week in Vegas. What are your plans after you get back home from Las Vegas? TC: I want to start preparing for 2024 by riding horses and getting on practice bulls whenever I can. FH & DB: And what is your favorite place you have ever had a chance to ride? TC: I think riding out here in Vegas has to be my favorite. It is a really cool place to be. FH & DB: So, to wrap up our interviews, we always ask our riders some fun questions to get to know them a little better. Who do you think is the best guy riding in the NFR this year? TC: I am going to have to say, Ky Hamilton. FH & DB: Where is your favorite vacation spot? TC: Usually, my vacation spots are at a bull riding, so probably Vegas or Texas. FH & DB: Do you have any pets? TC: Yeah, I have a dog named Jasper. He is a little rat thing. A Yorkie mix or something. FH & DB: Favorite food? TC: Probably steak FH & DB: Last one, what is your favorite color? TC: Teal is my favorite color. FH & DB: Well, Tanner, thanks for taking the time out of your busy Vegas schedule to chat with us, and we hope you have a great 2024 season! TC: Yes, ma’am, thank you for talking to me.

Stetson Wright 2023 All-Around Champion Cowboy Stetson Wright captures fifth-consecutive all-around title Superstar Stetson Wright has added another world championship to his resume. The Milford, Utah, cowboy clinched his fifth career PRCA All-Around World Championship and eighth overall. Despite being sidelined after Round 2 of the 2023 Wrangler NFR in his two events – saddle bronc riding and bull riding – because of a right hamstring strain, Wright clinched the all-around crown with $479,621. “This is awesome,” said Wright, 24, about winning the allaround title. “Through everything that happened here recently, the humbling experience that I have been a part of. To know that I blew everybody out of the water so much that I didn’t have to win a penny at the Finals in order to win this is pretty special. This will be a world title I will not forget. I

stopped thinking about world titles after I pulled myself out of the NFR. I just wanted to be healthy, and it is pretty special to win something like that when you’re not even able to finish the richest ten days of the year.” Wright’s world title collection consists of all-around titles in 2019-23, bull riding (2020, 2022) and saddle bronc riding (2021). Wright joins a select group of ProRodeo Hall of Fame cowboys – Joe Beaver, Roy Cooper, Don Gay, Larry Mahan, Don McLaughlin, Rich Skelton, Harry Tompkins and Fred Whitfield – who have won eight PRCA World Championships. There are only 18 cowboys in PRCA history to win at least eight world championships.

Humps-Horns.com · 12 · January 2024

ProRodeo Hall of Famer Trevor Brazile has the PRCA record with 26 world championships, including a record 14 in the all-around. “My goal is to break Trevor’s (all-around) record and the way I’m going to do that is being wise enough to know when to hold’em and when to fold’em. This was a week of folding them and just trusting that everything my dad (Cody, ProRodeo Hall of Fame saddle bronc rider) is telling me is going to pan out for the best. If I’m going to get there, I have to be healthy for the next ten years. “I’m super happy with my decision (to opt out of the NFR with his injury). I knew (Nelson) Wyatt has a chance to win the all-around and before I made the decision, it wasn’t just the bronc riding title and the bull riding title. It was everything. As good as those team ropers and timed-event guys are they are likely to win ten rounds because they are so fast.” Wright acknowledged he doesn’t expect anything from the sport of rodeo – it has to be earned.

“The way I go about is that I never think I have anything won, until I’m holding that gold buckle,” Wright said. “That’s when I know the fight is over. Me having to throw in the towel before this (NFR) got started was a hard pill to swallow. When you hear everybody call you Superman, you start believing your invincible and then you realize really quick that you’re just as human as everybody else. That was the hardest thing for me. I have dealt with injuries, but I have never had my body not cooperate with me and not fire. It would shut off and shutdown, but I could still ride, that wasn’t the case this time. I’m at peace with my decision. Eight-time world champion sounds better than seven.” Wright is hoping to have surgery Dec. 18, and he has no timetable for his return. “I will be back when I’m 100 percent,” Wright said. “I will be back, so everybody still believes in Superman.” Article and photos provided courtesy of PRCA.

Inspiration Point

This is a pretty big formula for what our dreams could be and how big we should really dream. In the verses in Ephesians, God has an incomparable power for those who believe. This power and strength is the same power that can raise the dead, rule over every being and object on this earth, now and for what is to come. The Spirit of God is active and unwavering. Our God is so huge and powerful that scripture says we are unable to understand everything God is doing! That even mountains tremble before Him (Isaiah 64:4).

When You Dream…

Set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come – 2 Corinthians 1:22

An early 2000s throw-back that’s appropriately titled “Dream Big” by Ryan Shupe & the RubberBand, still finds its way on all the good playlists. This hit offers a really simple but solid piece of advice: “When you dream, dream big.” When we dream, how big do we dream? How large can our aspirations be? There is a certain fear within a dream and a bigger fear of trusting God with our dreams. We worry that our expectations are too high, that our dream could never happen or that this dream of ours is too big for us. One of the most common fears as a Christian is that our dreams might not lie within the parameters of God’s plan for our lives. Bob Goff eloquently states it in his book “Love Does: Discover a Secretly Incredible Life in an Ordinary World:” God’s hope and plan for us is pretty simple to figure out. For those who resonate with formulas, here it is: add your whole life, your loves, your passions, and your interests together with what God said He wants us to be about, and that’s your answer.

2 Corinthians 1:21-22 says that the Spirit is in us! So why do we limit ourselves, and therefore limit God? The Spirit that is in us is the same Spirit that God uses in His glory and power. The Spirit empowers us when we are in tune with God and following faithfully to Christ. So as the New Year starts and those resolutions are at the forefront in our minds, think about how large you are dreaming! Now, it’s not the same as saying that I want to rule the world! Yes, that is a big dream, but does it address what God wants us to be? Love God and love people. Does your dream fall within that? Loving God is surrendering everything in your life for His glory, and the beauty of loving people is that it could take shape is so many different ways. That is where your dream lies. Within fulfilling the great commandment; loving God and dreaming big for His glory and the love of his people. Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus clear the way for us to come to you. May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you. May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones. – 1 Thessalonians 3:11-13

Old Fashioned Beef Stew INGREDIENTS

INSTRUCTIONS

• ¼ cup all-purpose flour • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground pepper • 1 pound beef stewing meat, trimmed and cut into inch cubes • 5 teaspoons vegetable oil • 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar • 1 cup red wine • 3½ cups beef broth, homemade or low-sodium canned • 2 bay leaves • 1 medium onion, peeled and chopped • 5 medium carrots, peeled and cut into ¼-inch rounds • 2 large baking potatoes, peeled and cut into ¾-inch cubes • 2 teaspoons salt

1. Combine the flour and pepper in a bowl, add the beef and toss to coat well. Heat 3 teaspoons of the oil in a large pot. Add the beef a few pieces at a time; do not overcrowd. Cook, turning the pieces until beef is browned on all sides, about 5 minutes per batch; add more oil as needed between batches. 2. Remove the beef from the pot and add the vinegar and wine. Cook over medium-high heat, scraping the pan with a wooden spoon to loosen any browned bits. Add the beef, beef broth and bay leaves. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a slow simmer. 3. Cover and cook, skimming broth from time to time, until the beef is tender, about 1½ hours. Add the onions and carrots and simmer, covered, for 10 minutes. Add the potatoes and simmer until vegetables are tender, about 30 minutes more. Add broth or water if the stew is dry. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Ladle among 4 bowls and serve.

Ky Hamilton Clinches First Career PRCA Bull Riding World Championship The emotional rollercoaster ride that was the 2023 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Teton Ridge for bull rider Ky Hamilton ended with a gold buckle and average buckle.

first time in his career by earning $239,060. The Top Gun Award was created in 2010 and is given to the contestant who wins the most money at the Wrangler NFR in one event.

Hamilton finished atop the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $595,414 and clinched his first career PRCA World Championship on Friday night at the Thomas & Mack Center.

“It means everything. That’s what I came over here to do. By the time I started riding when I was 12, I told everyone that all I wanted to do was be a bull riding world champion. To come over here and get that done, it’s just the icing on the cake.”

Hamilton, who is a native of Mackay, Australia, is the first Australian to capture a PRCA Bull Riding World Championship. Hamilton broke the single season bull riding mark, breaking Stetson Wright’s mark of $592,144 in 2022.

Hamilton joins ProRodeo Hall of Famers Dave Appleton (all-around, 1988) and Glen O’Neill (saddle bronc riding, 2002) as the only native Australians to win PRCA World Championships.

Hamilton also captured the RAM Top Gun Award for the

he took as the first bull out in Round 10 Saturday night and was bucked off – he clinched the world crown based on how things folded in Round 9.

Hamilton wasn’t supposed to compete in Round 6 of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo on Wednesday morning – until he did.

No bull rider in the field could surpass Hamilton atop the world standings even if a cowboy was the lone rider in Round 10 ($99,053) and won the average ($78,747).

Just 16 hours after losing consciousness and suffering a concussion when he was bucked off in Round 5, Hamilton was back in the yellow bucking chutes, Wednesday morning for Round 6, and winning money. Hamilton split third in Round 6 with his 85.5-point ride on Sankey Pro Rodeo & Phenom Genetics’ Love The Grind’s Bouchon.

Hamilton was bucked off Championship Pro Rodeo’s Dark Thoughts as his re-ride bull from Round 9 as the first competitor in Round 10 and then he was scheduled as the last rider out for Round 10 aboard Rafter G Rodeo’s Western Haulers Hurricane, but opted not to take the ride. Hamilton, won the average with 514.5 points on six head and became the first Australian to do so since Greg Potter of Ridgelands, Queensland, Australia, accomplished the feat with 502.5 points on six head in 2003. Hamilton had a drama-packed NFR for the ages on the way to his inaugural world championship.

Hamilton was knocked out during his ride aboard Honeycutt Rodeo’s Bales Hay’s MAGA during Round 5. Hamilton, who smacked heads with the bull, was sent to University Medical Center Trauma Center in Las Vegas for evaluation and observation. That was just the opening act for Hamilton. In Round 7, Hamilton claimed the victory with an 88-point ride on Duane Kesler’s Alberta Prime Devil’s Advocate. He also was the lone rider on Wednesday night – earning him a

$99,053 payday. In total, Hamilton earned $114,654 for his 16 seconds of work in Round 6 and Round 7. Hamilton won three rounds total at the 2023 Wrangler NFR – Round 1 with his 86.5-point ride aboard Cervi Championship Rodeo’s Vitalix Theodore and Round 4 with an 89-point ride on Bridwell Pro Rodeos’ Fred. “It’s has been (tough) but it’s been fun. Sure, getting knocked out is not fun but I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way,” Hamilton said. “I grew up idolizing cowboys and surrounding myself with bull riders that are cowboys, and it was just another day for me. The Troy Dunn’s and JB Mauney’s are who I wanted to be like, carrying their mentality of just another day. I’m just glad I have guys around me that are like them, groomed me, and showed me the way.” Hamilton won the most money of any competitor at this year’s NFR at $262,502, counting ground money. Hamilton made his fourth NFR appearance.

53E BAYOU BENGAL

2023 PRCA BULL OF THE YEAR By Kelly B. Robbins

The 2023 PRCA National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas is now history. Cowboys, cowgirls, and stock contractors alike are all entering the new PRCA season with expectations for a great and exciting year. Congratulations go out to Pete Carr Pro Rodeo as they enter the new PRCA season with the 2023 PRCA Bull of the Year, 53E Bayou Bengal. The top bull riders of the PRCA vote to select the PRCA Bull of the Year. Owner Pete Carr shared, “From a rider’s perspective, a bull must be rank enough to get a high score, but he also must be rideable. They won’t vote for a bull that is too rank to ride. I guess Bayou Bengal looked good from both perspectives.” Bayou Bengal is 6 years old and this year’s NFR was his third appearance. According to Probullstats.com, Bayou Bengal has a career record of 39 attempts and 2 rides. His buck-off percentage is 94.87%, and his average ride score is 88.5. At San Antonio back in February, Jeff Askey had a good ride aboard

Bayou Bengal and managed to hang on until the buzzer for a ride score of 90 points. Bayou Bengal had a bull score of 45. Bayou Bengal posted some amazing scores this season. He outdueled seven-time NFR qualifier Trey Benton in June at Pecos, Texas. Trey tasted dirt in 1.89 seconds and Bayou Bengal left Texas with a huge bull score of 48 points! In Oakley City, Utah over the 4th of July event, Bayou Bengal faced off against Dustin Boquet, and bucked him off in 2.94 seconds for another 48-point bull score! At the same event, he bested Roscoe Jarboe in 2.30 seconds for a bull score of 46.50. Folks were starting to talk about the possibility of Bayou Bengal becoming the 2023 PRCA Bull of the Year. Bayou Bengal had a good showing in Las Vegas at this year’s NFR. He faced Josh Frost in Round 2, and handily dispatched him in 1.82 seconds. He then outlasted Jared Parsonage in Round 7 in 4.08 seconds. Pete Carr Pro Rodeo had nine

bovine athletes and eleven equine athletes that wear the Rafter C brand at the 2023 PRCA NFR. The Pete Carr Pro Rodeo website highlights their specific focus on genetics, nutrition, and fitness. They produce some of the finest bovine and equine animal athletes in professional rodeo. “Bayou Bengal is a Page-bred bull (D&H Cattle Company),” Pete revealed. Billy Jones, Pete Carr Pro Rodeo’s operations manager and main animal handler joined our interview and offered, “Bayou Bengal was sired by D&H Cattle Company’s Inferno, who is a son of Crosswired. The mama was a full sister of Shepard Hills Tested.” For all of you bull riding fans, that is an impressive bloodline. Pete Carr Pro Rodeo is situated in Moscow, Texas. I asked Pete how big the ranch was. He laughed and said, “Well, it’s big enough!” Billy shared that they have quite a big place and put about one animal per acre. He also said they keep about 60 bulls and 300 horses on the ranch. “Our bulls are all free range in a big pasture,” Pete explained. “They eat the grass, and we have a special mix of feed we give

them every day. In the winter, they eat hay that we raise and harvest on the ranch. Lots of stuff gets torn up on our place because of the bulls.” “Bayou Bengal is a big, 1,800 lb. Brindle bull,” Billy shared. “They sometimes call a brindle bull tiger striped. Brindle is usually black stripes on a red base. Bayou Bengal is the type of bull that can eat all the time but stays at a good fighting weight. He’s easy for me to handle, but I can’t pet him!” Pete did not grow up on a ranch but was raised in the city of Dallas by his single mom. He started riding bareback broncs in high school and discovered the western way of life. He rode professionally for over fifteen years into his mid-thirties. I asked him how he got involved as a stock contractor. He replied, “When you rodeo, you become ingrained in that environment. When you get too old or you have had too many broken bones, you quit riding. But you revert to that circle of people, your friends and family that you’ve been hanging with for all those years. It was a natural step for me to start contracting. It was a way for me to continue in rodeo in some capacity and stay involved in my passion. In 1996, Pete also founded and is

still the President and CEO of Resource Commercial Construction, a general contracting firm in Dallas. Billy has a similar story. “I started riding bareback broncs out of high school. I worked for a sale barn in Livingston, and I would try out the new, fresh bulls that came in. I had the opportunity to flip bulls while I was still riding.” “Billy has an amazing background in stock contracting,” Pete said. “He eventually was involved in world-wide stock contracting. Billy has made us who we are! He gets up every day and feeds and cares for our stock. Our bull crop in the last five years has been the strength of our company. That is all due to Billy’s expertise!”

Western Wanderings a cowboy’s nap Cowboys are certainly a breed apart Cause they’re rough and tough to their core Their expertise goes mostly unnoticed As they tackle their daily chores

By Kelly B. Robbins

But couple hard work and long hours With the know-how and skills that they do You start to get a good picture Of real cowboys, through and through Now a cowboy who rises way before dawn And then works past the setting sun Will need a few breaks during the day A cowboy’s nap is certainly one. He might lean against a corral pole While sitting down on the hard ground Or maybe lay down on the prairie Where a wandering stream shares its sound He might take a nap against an oak tree Or find a big meadow nap room Or maybe just lean a chair ‘gainst the wall Of the town’s number one saloon Wherever he finds to grab a short nap It’s certainly time well invested To refresh and energize that cowboy So he goes back to work well rested.
