Letter from the Editor

With the thermometer rising to near 100 degrees, it’s not hard to tell that summer is upon us. Humps N Horns has had a chance to attend several Blue Def Tour, Touring Pro Division, and open bull riding events in the past month. It is always an honor to meet you when we are out on the road. If you ever see the HNH booth, please stop by and say “Hello!”. This issue is another great effort by the Humps N Horns team. Our photographers, Andy Gregory and Jane Delbianco, have captured some magnificent images from the Helldorado Days and Last Cowboy Standing in Las Vegas. We will continue to feature some of these thrills and spills in future issues. We also have a great article by Kelly Robbins about the Sundance Rodeo Arena in Fredonia, PA. It is nice to know that rodeo and bull riding are going strong all across the country, not just in the south as one would typically think. We have news and events from a number of bull riding associations throughout the country where you have an opportunity to support riders of all ages. Speaking of that, I know the BFTS events are on the summer break but there are some excellent events where you can see some great bull riding action. Be sure to check out our Where’s The Beef section (page 48) and the Humps N Horns Facebook page for information about these events. The summer months are a great time to enjoy some fun activities with the family. Be sure to look in our Where’s the Beef? section and find a bull riding or rodeo event that you can enjoy together. Many of these events benefit charities and youth organizations in the local communities so you can have fun with your family and make a difference in the lives of others. Not a bad deal!

Riley’s Roundup

Hello all, I hope everyone is enjoying their summer, I know I am. Not much to talk about with the PBR on break...Grandpa went to a couple Touring Pro events, he said they where good but the entertainer wasn’t as good as Flint. Really there is only one Flint, but Matt Merritt does a good job also (grandpa has a surprise for him in Allentown, Pa. in Sept.) So who do you think will win it all this year? Who will be the #1 bull this year? I will tell you my picks next month!! The picture this month is an older one but I just want everyone to meet a wonderful man.....His name is Charlie Christerson, he is from Ohio also. Grandpa and I meant him a few years back in Nashville. When he was younger he rode bulls, he was a bullfighter and he was an entertainer for bull riding events...he even had an old car he took to the events to help with the entertaining. Now he helps out with the Rider Relief Fund when ever he can, grandpa and him worked the RRF booth at Lima, Ohio Touring Pro event over the weekend (Cody Nance won it). Please note the plaque that we are holding, it is of Jerome Davis. I want to let you know Charlie makes those, he donates one each night of the PBR event to the RRF to be raffled off and also gives one to the winner of the event. I think he told grandpa he is up to 210 given away. He numbers each one. So if you have one you are a lucky person....if you don’t have one head to the RRF booth and get your raffle tickets. Charlie is a very good volunteer but an even better man....THANK YOU Charlie for all you do and grandpa and I are very proud to call you our friend. One more thing on Charlie, grandpa just told me his wife has been battling cancer for a while....maybe we could all say a little prayer for her....THANKS Don’t forget to make someone smile!!! Love you all, Riley

can play a role in the development of this condition. Basically if any of your muscles are tense, it throws off your musculoskeletal system by changing your alignment and the way your foot strikes the ground. It would be very beneficial to designate some of your time for a total body stretching routine. Nonetheless, if a total body stretch does not work for you, just performing stretches for your legs and feet will relieve your pain from Plantar Fasciitis. The following list contains some instruction for some beneficial stretches, but if at any point, one of these stretches causes you unbearable pain, stop immediately, and re-evaluate the stretch or consider visiting a doctor: •

5 Tips to Relieve Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar Fasciitis causes consistent stiffness and pain in the heel or bottom of the foot. This pain is due to inflammation in the plantar fascia which is a thick band of tissue that connects your toes to your heel bone and provides support for the arch of your foot. If this ligament is strained, it becomes swollen, weak, inflamed, and hurts whenever you stand, walk, or place pressure on your foot. Some causes for the development of Plantar Fasciitis are: • Very High or Very Low Arches: both cause the plantar fascia to be pulled away from the heel. • Extreme Pronation: the foot rolls inward while walking or running • Supination: the foot rolls outward during movement • Runners and athletes have a risk of developing this injury if they suddenly increase their mileage. • If you have to stand on hard floors for long periods of time • Weak Core Muscles, Tight Hip Flexors, Tight Calf Muscles, or Low Back Problems: all of these instances cause a subtle change to your stride and place stress on the Plantar Fascia • Pregnancy: Many women find that the extra weight during pregnancy causes stress to the Plantar Fascia ligament. If this ailment is bothering you, there are some things you can do to treat it and relieve the pain. #1) STRETCH Most people who have problems with their Plantar Fascia have persistently tight muscles in their back, hips, hamstrings, calves, and Achilles tendons. Professionals believe that even tightness through the shoulders

Stretch before stepping out of bed: Plantar Fasciitis can be painful all day, but can be especially bad in the morning. When you step out of bed with tight, rigid muscles, you aggravate your plantar fascia ligament. If this happens every morning, it continues the cycle of pain and inflammation because it doesn’t get enough time to rejuvenate. Before getting out of bed in the morning, first, sit up and flex your feet. Then with a strap (if you do not have a strap, a belt or hand towel will work fine) under your flexed feet, start pulling your feet toward your body until you feel a good stretch in your calves and Achilles tendons. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds, then repeat a couple more times with a little rest in between each one. Calf Stretches: When your calf muscles are tight, they cause stress to the heel bone because it is being pulled, therefore making the plantar fascia tense and prone to injury. Stretching the lower leg muscles is one of the best things you can do in order to recover. First, stand facing a table, place your hands palm down on the table and slide one of your legs back pushing your heel down until you feel a stretch in your lower leg. Hold this for 30 seconds and repeat 3 times for each leg. If you feel that you can handle a deeper stretch, you can bend your knees which will also allow you to stretch the lower areas of the legs. Plantar Fascia Stretches: Stretching the Plantar Fascia will help loosen up the muscles and tissues and relieve some of the pain. With your hand, pull your toes up until you feel a stretch in the ball of your foot, you may even feel the stretch all the way to your heel. Hold this stretch for at least 30 seconds and repeat at least 3 times. Hamstring Stretch: Standing Stretch: Stand up straight and simply bend forward from the waist. You should let the arms dangle down by your sides and make sure to keep your legs straight. Reach for your toes, but if you cannot make it all the way down to touch them, do not force yourself to. It is not necessary to cause yourself more pain. This stretch should provide a nice, gentle release across the back of the hamstrings. It is important to hold each stretch for at least 10 seconds and repeat a few times. For a less strenuous version of this stretch, you can sit in a chair and stretch your legs straight out in front of you. Gently reach forward and try to touch your toes. You can even do this with one leg at a time to make it easier and less stressful on the back and core muscles.

Humps-Horns.com · 10 · July 2016

Back Stretch: Prone Press Up: Lie on the floor with your elbows bent and palms placed down on the ground. Then, lift your upper torso off the ground making sure to keep your hips and legs in contact with the ground beneath you. Make sure to keep all of your muscles relaxed and never push yourself to go further than what is comfortable for you. Hold for 10-30 seconds. Repeat at least 10 times.

#2) WEAR SUPPORTIVE FOOTWEAR One reason many people develop Plantar Fasciitis is because their shoes do not provide the right support or heel cushioning and, therefore, allow the plantar fascia ligament to be pulled. Many professionals believe that it does not matter if you have an overpronation or underpronation, your Plantar Fascia needs support. Not only do shoes provide support but, if they are in good shape, they also absorb great amounts of shock that would otherwise be placed on the entire foot. To find relief for your Plantar Fasciitis, you should consider finding a brand of shoes or shoe inserts (orthotics) that provide adequate support for your unique foot. For good advice and assistance in finding the perfect shoes for your foot and gait, you can visit a store that specializes in these types of shoes. Most of the time, stores will have a machine that can check out your feet and provide recommendations, as well as an educated staff that can offer advice. There are many brands of shoes on the market, but not all of them are alike; each one is designed for certain types of feet or gaits. They are all also made from different materials, some of which absorb shock better. With some time, you should be able to find the right pair of shoes or inserts that will minimize stress on your Plantar Fascia. Don’t be afraid to return a pair, if it turns out that they are not working, it is better to keep trying different pairs than to concede to wearing one that doesn’t work for your heel. Another option for relief is to purchase some Foot Arch Band Supports, which are thin, lightweight bands that wrap around the foot and provide support pads under the arch. Another important fact to remember is that shoes need to be replaced as soon as the soles, heels, or treads are compressed or worn down. If you are on your feet all day, especially on a hard floor, or you are an avid athlete, you should replace your shoes every few months. Most people claim that shoes can last anywhere from 300-500 miles. Some people do not like this idea because they feel that it is a costly, but the truth of the matter is that it would be less expensive and painful than suffering from this long-lasting condition of the heel, such as chronic Plantar Fasciitis. Bonus Tip: For the sake of preventing or treating Plantar Fasciitis, it would be wise to take a break from hard or uneven running surfaces and find some soft running surfaces such as a track. It will limit the amount of shock the heel has to absorb.

#3) MASSAGE THE ARCH Massage for the irritated Plantar Fascia is very beneficial because it helps loosen up the ligaments and prevent irritation to the Plantar Fascia. While it is possible to go out and pay for a massage, there are also some easy massages that you can perform for yourself at home, and they are very easy on your wallet! One way to massage your arch by yourself is to place a tennis ball on the ground and roll it around with the bottom of your foot for a few minutes. Use enough force so that you receive a deep massage. You may find that it is slightly sore or uncomfortable, but if it is too painful, stop immediately. Depending on your preference, this massage can be done for 3-10 minutes once, or even several times a day. Other items that can be used in the same way include: a 12 oz soda pop can or golf ball. Another way to accomplish an arch massage is to do the same exact method described above using a frozen water bottle. By massaging and icing at the same time, you can relieve inflammation and pain at the same time. While some find it unbearable due to the temperature of the frozen water bottle, many find that it loosens the ligaments and relieves inflammation efficiently and affordably. Be sure to wear socks while trying this method; it may prevent you from becoming too uncomfortable from the intense cold of the ice. Foam rollers are also a great option for an arch massage. They are fairly inexpensive and can be purchased online or at some stores. Lay the foam roller on the ground and then push it forward and backwards by applying pressure and pushing with the foot. Foam rollers provide a little bit of resistance and massage all areas of the arch’s ligaments. #4) WEAR NIGHT SPLINTS In many cases of Plantar Fasciitis, wearing a splint at night is beneficial because it provides relief from the morning stiffness that accompanies Plantar Fasciitis. When a person rests or sleeps, the plantar fascia and inner plantar muscles shorten and adapt to a nonfunctional state. This is why so many people with Plantar Fasciitis suffer from the sharp, intense pain within their first few steps after sleep or relaxation. Once the muscles and ligaments lengthen after a few steps, the severeness is known to subside. Splints apply a constant, light stretch to the Plantar Fascia and surrounding muscles, therefore, preventing them from contracting. Most recommendations for how long you should wear a splint are at least two weeks, but for optimal results, you should wear the splint for four weeks. Doctors say that this amount of time provides significant relief from pain and limits the amount of stress that is placed on the Plantar Fascia. While you can purchase a splint online or from a health store, a visit to a podiatrist might be helpful when it comes to choosing the right one for you. There are many brands

Humps-Horns.com · 11 · July 2016

available, some of which allow you to adjust the angles to your own preference and comfortability. Some people give up wearing night splints because they find them uncomfortable to sleep in. It is true that the splint may keep certain types of sleepers from lying in their preferred sleeping position; however, with this being said, the patients who give night splints a chance, find relief. Many find that with a combination of treatments such as stretches and massages, they not only find relief but also rehabilitate their Plantar Fascia. #5) REST, ICE, AND TOPICAL ANALGESICS While rest may be the hardest thing on this list to convince yourself to do, it is actually very beneficial. Since the Plantar Fascia is located in the feet, it is a very hard area to rejuvenate because of the constant motion many people find themselves in. However, if you could find a way to take some days off of work, training, running, or whatever it is you do, your feet would appreciate it and, perhaps, you could prevent your pain from becoming chronic. Even just a few days to focus on resting and rejuvenating your feet would provide astounding results, especially if you took the time during those days to also try one or more of the following: 1. While sitting back and relaxing, apply ice for 20 minutes. This will reduce inflammation and provide some relief. Remember to always wrap the ice pack, bag of frozen veggies, or bagged ice cubes, etc. in a towel to prevent damaging your skin and tissue from the cold item. 2. Find a topical analgesic lotion or cream that will provide relief from inflammation and pain. Many topical pain relievers contain ingredients like Menthol, Arnica, Capsicum, Aloe Vera, Glucosamine, etc., all of which have rejuvenating qualities. Some products even contain Emu Oil which is known to provide relief from pain, as well as absorb through all layers of the skin and carry other beneficial ingredients along with it. There are many different ones on the market so be sure to look around and find the one that is best for you. 3. Maybe you could give yourself a few hours to relax with your feet up in order to wear a splint. 4. Also, don’t forget to grab that tennis ball or frozen water bottle to massage that arch at least 4 times,if not more, throughout the day. 5. Other options for giving your heel some rest would be to switch to low impact forms of exercise such as swimming or biking. Both of these options allow you to keep yourself fit, but prevent you from exerting pressure on your feet and aggravating your Plantar Fasciitis. 6. If at all possible, avoid taking too many NSAIDs or painkiller medications. While these may provide temporary relief, they are known to have serious side effects. They also cause your body to build up a tolerance which makes you feel the need to consume more of these potentially life-threatening pills. Finding a way to naturally relieve your pain will be more rewarding and less risky. Written by Christina Flatt Published by Real Time Pain Relief

In His Love,

Beauty is Skin Deep

Keno

In the world in which we live today, everyone thinks that they need to look like a movie star. Sure some people have been blessed with extremely good looks, but the truth is, that most of us in this ole world were not blessed in such a manner. Every now and then, someone will post on the internet pictures of movie stars before they have arrived at the makeup trailer, and lo and behold most of them are just like the rest of us. But seriously, where do some people get off thinking that they can attempt to hold others to a higher standard that most of them can meet. They bully and talk ugly about others simply because they don’t meet the criteria of what a small group thinks they should be. And in reality, all of us and most of them have imperfections. If you were to look at the portraits of people who were photographed by Yousuf Karsh and included in his book, THE FACES OF GREATNESS, you’ll discover that most of them were not physically attractive. Somebody once made a study of the faces of 90 famous people in this book and determined that 35 of them had moles or warts, 13 had noticeable freckles or liver spots, 20 had obvious traces of acne or other pimples, and two had highly visible scars. But the blemishes did not deter these subjects. Thornton Wilder, the great playwright; Richard Rogers, the composer; Picasso, the renounced painter; and many others had imperfections that were obvious to the world. But what might have embarrassed lesser people just added character when they posed before the ever-truthful lens of the camera. How true the old saying is “Beauty is only skin deep.” It really is far greater to posses inward beauty than to have outward beauty and a dark and mean heart. It is much better to have the inward beauty of Christ than it is to spend endless hours and countless dollars improving the temple of vanity. Today in this country everything is based upon how we look from the outside and not what is within. However, its nice to look and feel good as long as a person does not let it rule their life.

A Case for Support

by Jill vanEgmond

In November of 1998, the Rider Relief Fund, initially named Resistol Relief Resources, Inc., was founded following Jerome Davis’ fall from Jerry Nelson’s bull, Knock ‘em Out John. Jerome’s injury was serious and it ended his career as a bull rider. The outpouring of care and concern from friends, fans, sponsors, participants in and around the sport of bull riding, and the PBR Board of Directors resulted in the establishment of the Rider Relief Fund, a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization. By the end of 2014, the Rider Relief Fund provided more than 470 athletes with financial assistance totaling over $1.5 million and negotiated with care providers over $1 million in medical expense savings. Between 2012 and 2014, Rider Relief Fund provided $330,000.00 in financial assistance and in 2014 negotiated down over $400,000 in medical expenses for 20 injured riders. The sport of bull riding is experiencing phenomenal popularity and growth at the professional and local competitive levels. Approximately 4,000 competitions take place each year at all levels of bull riding, thus creating an increase in requests for assistance from Rider Relief Fund. Since 2012, the Rider Relief Fund has received 40% more in requests than in previous years.

Bull riders and bull fighters are not just cowboys; they are athletes, true athletes that go above and beyond the mere definition of the word. They exhibit every trait of an athlete along with embodying the meaning of athleticism and sportsmanship. ESPN ranked ten qualities that exhibit athleticism in sports. Bull riding ranked #2 for nerves (fear factor) and #6 for durability (the ability to constantly withstand physical punishment). These athletes push themselves to the limits, never give up and believe in their abilities. Like all athletes that compete in extreme sports there is a desire for the adrenaline rush, a confidence that you can and you will, a belief that you are bigger than...stronger than anything that comes your way. Simply put they are tough, and it is a part of their creed to measure up to being tough in the eyes of their peers and their own heart. There is no doubt in their mind they are better every time no matter what they are up against. This drive along with the excitement and support they receive from their fans is what keeps them performing past pain, injury and all odds. They choose to compete in a sport where there is no fall back. Unlike most other athletes, if they aren’t performing or are out with injury,

for Rider Relief Fund to restructure and shift from a grassroots nonprofit to a well-structured and efficient organization. With a strong governing Board working with a full-time Director of Fund Development and a Fund Operations Manager, a concise and strategic approach to fundraising and donor stewardship has been instituted.

they aren’t getting paid.

Rider Relief Fund will continue fundraising through donations from loyal supporters and special events, but will also begin a focused effort on acquiring new donors through direct mail appeals and annual giving campaigns. Rider Relief Fund will seek new opportunities with the hopes to expand support from individuals and corporations through a major gifts campaign, where long term relationships will be cultivated and interests will align with the mission of Rider Relief Fund.

What makes these cowboys different from every other athlete is they live by an unwritten code. John Wayne said, “A man’s got to have a code, a creed to live by, no matter his job.” Back in the days when the cowman with his herds made a new frontier, there was no law on the range. Lack of written law made it necessary for cowboys to develop a rule of behavior which became known as the “Code of the West.” These were merely a gentleman’s agreement to certain rules of conduct for survival and were respected everywhere on the range. These rules centered on hospitality, fair play, loyalty and respect.

We can’t do this without you! This sport is all about helping one another. Riders help riders. Bull fighters are at the ready to stand in harm’s way to protect their fellow athletes. Stock contractors help both riders and fighters by sharing the tendencies and traits of their bulls. As the “Code of the West” says, “A cowboy helps someone in need, even an enemy or a stranger.” As the popularity of bull riding grows, so does the need for the Rider Relief Fund and so does our need for support from those who love the sport and enjoy the entertainment it provides. Please join us and enjoy the rewarding feeling of knowing your gift saves lives and changes lives.

Bull riders and fighters still live by this code today and it can be seen in the brotherhood of these men, competing not against one another, but against themselves and the bulls. They are well mannered, genuine, have values that run deep and believe in helping one another out. It isn’t about money or fame, but about a way of life and doing what they love. They are truly one of a kind.

While it all began when one of bull riding’s best was knocked from competition, Jerome didn’t let his injury end his association with the sport he loves. Jerome and his wife, Tiffany, are not only topnotch stock contractors in North Carolina, but they also help many young bull riders, through their ranching operations and bull riding schools and events. Jerome and Tiffany continue to give back to the sport, and we hope you will join them in supporting the Rider Relief Fund. Photos courtesy of Rider Relief Fund

Rider Relief Fund is dedicated to providing the helping hand these cowboys need in their time of difficulty through financial assistance for utilities, mortgages, rent, monthly bills and living expenses; along with negotiating medical costs to reduce incurred debt and out of pocket payments. When a cowboy in the sport of bull riding is injured, their earning capability can vanish in a matter of seconds. Rider Relief Fund provides injured cowboys and their families with assistance in meeting basic needs such as food, shelter, and utilities. What makes Rider Relief Fund different from other organizations that provide financial assistance is that Rider Relief Fund works with the cowboys and their care providers to negotiate down medical expenses that are incurred due to their injuries. The growth of the sport and the rise in demand generated a need

The surprise attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese on December 7, 1941 was a dark moment in the history of our great country. But it was also one of the brightest moments. The attack was designed to discourage America so we would stay out of World War II. Exactly the opposite happened. A sleeping giant was awakened who fought and battled all the way to victory. 1149 Pearl Harbor is another battling giant that has been awakened to his potential destiny in the brightest moment of his five year-old bovine history as he fights towards the PBR Built Ford Tough Series World Bull Championship for 2016. “I first saw Pearl Harbor in 2013 at the ABBI Finals in Las Vegas,” shared Slade Long of Probullstats.com. “I made a point to remember his name, because he really stood out from the other bulls with the dummy on his back. He has everything, a lot of air, speeds up, slows down. He’s 100% legit.” Pearl Harbor was ranked 4th in the PBR BFTS world standings at the summer break, with an average bull score of 45 points. In 10 outs so far this season, he has been bested to the buzzer just once, by reigning PBR BFTS champion J.B. Mauney. That ride was in April at the 15/15 Bucking Battle in Sioux Falls, and J.B.’s score was a whopping 94.25 points! Equally impressive was Pearl Harbor’s bull score of 46.25 points.

Silver Creek Rodeo Company with partner Matt Williams. Jeremy manages Pearl Harbor on a day-to-day basis. “I pretty much take care of Pearl Harbor,” Jeremy said. “I try to make sure he stays in shape, eats like he should and I run him up and down the road and flank him. I just try to keep him healthy and make sure he’s firing on all cylinders. This first part of the season we’ve just been getting to know each other. He’s a real smart bull. He’s not mean but he’s far from being a pet. He doesn’t just like anyone and he’ll jump a six foot fence to get away from you. He just doesn’t have any back-up in him.” “I’ve always had my eye on Pearl Harbor since he was a two yearold,” Jeremy admitted. “He was always up there winning. He’s been winning since the first time he bucked. He went straight into the big leagues as a three year-old. Toby Floyd trained him and he basically turned over a smooth running, well-oiled machine to us. He just gets better and better. I have to thread a rope through the chute to keep his back end down so he’ll come out clean. He’s got such a big motor and he really wants to explode out of the chute.”

According to Probullstats.com, Pearl Harbor has been ridden only three times in 30 outs, for a buck-off percentage of 89.29%. His lifetime average PBR bull score is 44.282. Former PBR BFTS World Champion Guilherme Marchi tried him on for size at the American in Arlington, Texas back in March. He lasted just 3.75 seconds. Three time PBR BFTS World Champion Silvano Alves was sent flying in 4.91 seconds in Albuquerque in March. Young gun Derek Kolbaba was tasting St. Louis dirt back in February when he was bucked off in 2.45 seconds. And 2015 PBR BFTS World Finals Champion Cooper Davis has been manhandled by Pearl Harbor twice in 2016. In Kansas City in February, he lasted just 3.98 seconds and he was chewing on some dirt in just 1.75 seconds in Little Rock back in April. Pearl Harbor is owned by Dave Kielhorn and Jeremy Walker of the Bar D Cattle Company. They recently purchased Pearl Harbor from Brad Boyd and Toby Floyd of the Boyd and Floyd Bull Company. Boyd and Floyd will remain partners through the 2016 season. Pearl Harbor resides part of the time in Stephenville, Texas at Jeremy and Caitlin Walker’s place, and part of the time with Dave and Shari Kielhorn at the Bar D Cattle Company headquarters in Silverdale, Kansas. Jeremy is a former bull rider and has been around rodeo his whole life. He is currently building the bucking bull herd for Bar D Cattle Company. Dave Kielhorn has been a commercial cattleman all his life and also owns the

“I think what sets him apart from the other bulls is his size and his athleticism,” Jeremy continued. “He weighs in at nearly 2,000 pounds, but he is really fast and light on his feet and pretty controlled in his movements. He’s bigger than most of the bulls and he’s so smart and athletic that he’s in a class of his own.” “He really doesn’t have a set bucking pattern.” Jeremy noted. “He adjusts to the riders really quickly, like he feels where they are and knows just what he has to do. When he’s moving, he already knows where he has to be. He’s not going to stay going the same way. The riders are going to have to earn an eight second trip. If he could play poker or chess, I think Pearl Harbor would be hard to beat.” “We’re just following the training program that Pearl Harbor has had with Boyd and Floyd,” Jeremy observed. “We feed him the same blend that they gave him. They always kept him separated from the other bulls, so we keep him separated too. He travels really well and when he’s on the road he eats and drinks like he should. And he regenerates from a road trip quicker than any bull I’ve ever seen.” “I’m really looking forward to the second half of the PBR BFTS season,” Jeremy admitted.” Pearl Harbor recently was down in Elgin, Texas at Dr. Warners. He had an abscess on his head and they drained a half gallon of infection out of his head. And he had an infection in his right rear foot. We caught it early enough. I can’t help but think these were bothering him earlier in the season. Now that he’s 100% and good to go...look out riders!”

Kaique Pacheco Was the Last Cowboy Standing!

Last Cowboy Standing was part of the Las Vegas Helldorado Days, and was not only the third major PBR event, but the last BFTS stop before the three-month summer break. It took place over two nights at the Las Vegas Village on the Strip. This is always an exciting event and this year was no exception. The competition was fierce and the bulls were tough, so there was nothing certain about the outcome. Kaique Pacheco was obviously very consistent, which enabled him to collect that big check for total winnings of $115,500, which included that $100,000 for being the Last Cowboy Standing. And with that win, he also moved up into the lead in the BFTS world standings after collecting 920 points – not bad for the reigning Rookie of the Year. Round one was won by one of the fan favorites, Robson Palermo. Robson had not turned in a qualified ride since the 15/15 Bucking Battle back at the beginning of April, and returned from injury to take this opening round. He scored an 89 on Swashbuckler, owned by Dakota Rodeo/Julie Rosen/Clay Struve/Chad Berger. Robson also grabbed 125 points toward the world standings, so this was a great welcome back for Palermo. A comparative unknown to the fans was Mexico’s Jorge Valdiviezo, but he certainly made fans aware of his presence. Jorge rode the Wentz Bucking Bull, Buffalo Jump, for an 88.50, giving him second place and 75 points for the world standings. Lachlan Richardson was third after his ride on Superstition, owned by Paige Stout Bucking Bulls, garnered him an even 88 points. Gage Gay wrapped up fourth place in the round when he covered New West Rodeos’ Whiskey Bent for a score of 87.50.

A total of 15 men rode their bulls in the first round, with eventual winner Pacheco getting the lowest qualifying score, a 79.5. Since there had to be at least 25 riders in the second round, 10 more riders advanced based on their place in the current world standings. For that reason, even though J.B. Mauney and Fabiano Vieira did not get a score in the first round, they were able to compete in round two. And much to the crowds’ delight, it was Mauney who won that second round. He scored 89.75 after a great ride on Moto Moto, owned by J.A.R.S Bucking Bulls/Gene Owen. That score ended up being the high-score ride of the event. Another very popular bull rider, Cooper Davis, was second. He covered JJs Pride, owned by Western Star Bucking Bulls, to a score of 87.50. Coming in third was Gay. He was given a score of 87.25 after he was able to conquer Cooper Tires Brown Sugar. That good bull is owned by Dakota Rodeo/Julie Rosen/Clay Struve/Chad Berger. Fourth was Vieira. He rode Jeff Robinson Bucking Bulls’ Percolator and received an 86.50 score. Pacheco was fifth in that round, one which saw eight men coming back for a third attempt at that big check and all those points. Even though he didn’t make the whistle in that third round it was young Jess Lockwood who made an impression with his enthusiasm. The cowboys drew their bulls for this round, and it was Lockwood who got the chance to put a cool $50,000 in his pocket when he drew the Bad Boy Mowers Bonus Bull, the amazing Air Time, owned by Jared Allen’s Pro Bull Team. He was thrilled and excited to draw this great bull and get his chance

to prove just what he was made of. His father, on the other hand, felt differently. We were told that when Jess announced that he had drawn “the best bull out there, Air Time,” his father got a pained expression on his face and shook his head. Lockwood lasted a mere 2.66 seconds, as Air Time did what he has done in the past – dust his rider in a very short period of time. Understandably, Air Time was the Salem NationaLease HighMarked Bull with a score of 47.50. Hard for even a young and hungry bull rider to be disappointed for long when a bull bucks hard enough in less than three seconds to receive a score like that. Despite a lot of support from his fans, J.B. was unable to ride his third bull, and left the arena looking very sore. When we spotted him later he was walking very gingerly up the stairs. Hopefully he takes a bit of time during the BFTS break to get better so he can come on strong for the second half of the season before the Finals. Even though eight riders came back, only Pacheco and Eduardo Aparecido were able to cover their bulls. Kaique was given a score of 89.75 after riding Wicked, owned by J.A.R.S Bucking Bulls/ Gene Owen. Aparecido rode Stanley FatMax,

owned by Jeff Robinson Bucking Bulls, for 85.50 points. Those two moved on to the fourth round.

Kaique Pacheco rides W icked, from the J.A.R.S Bucking Bulls/Gene Ow en herd, for 89.75 points to win Round 3.

Eduardo was first on the bovine star, Asteroid. However, his ride only lasted 3.93 seconds. It was all up to Pacheco, and he rode like he didn’t have a care in the world. He was given a score of 88 points after he was able to ride Little Red Jacket, owned by J.A.R.S Bucking Bulls/Gene Owen, and earned the coveted title of Last Cowboy Standing.

Helldorado Days burst on the Las Vegas scene May 13-15, with the Las Vegas Elks Lodge #1468, the Las Vegas Centennial Committee, and the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) teaming up for the first time. Presented by Monster Energy, it was also the first time that Helldorado Days came to the Strip; it was held at Las Vegas Village, right across the street from the Luxor Hotel.

There were seven, yes seven, men with the last name of Wright who took on the saddle broncs, and they all made their appearance on Saturday. Therefore it was not really a surprise when one of them won the buckle. Competing were brothers Jake and Jesse (who are also twins), Alex, Spencer, and Cody, as well as Cody’s sons Rusty and Ryder.

Highlighting Helldorado Days was the final PBR event before summer break, Last Cowboy Standing. That event will be covered in a separate article because make no mistake, there was a lot going on during the three days Helldorado Days.

But experience came through, as it was Dad Cody who posted an 85 on the Diamond G Rodeo bronc, A Little Bit of Buddah. He took home $2,888 for that effort. Jacobs Crawley was right behind Cody with a score of 84, and Allen Boore was another point off with 83, giving him third place. Ryder and Jesse tied for sixth while Rusty tied for eighth.

In addition to the PRCA rodeo and Freestyle Bullfighting competition, there was a parade down Main Street, as well as the traditional Whiskerino moustache and beard contest. At Las Vegas Village there was a carnival complete with rides and lots of food, concerts, Native American dancing, and mutton busting – definitely something to interest everyone, Western or not. The weather did not really cooperate, as it was very hot and occasionally windy for the 3:00pm Helldorado Days start each day, but rodeo fans braved the heat to cheer on their favorites. The format was pretty simple; there was three days of competition in each of the seven rodeo events with different competitors each day. The cowboy or cowgirl who had the highest score or fastest time of those three days won their particular event. For the bareback riding it was Casey Colletti and the Flying U Rodeo bronc Lil Red Hawk who got the highest score, an 86, taking home the winners’ check of $2,837. Coming in second was Ty Breuer with an 84, and George Gillespie’s score of 83 left him in third. Steer wrestling saw two men tie with a great time of 3.8 seconds. They were Ross Mosher and Tom Lewis, and they each pocketed $2,284 for their respective efforts. In third place was Olin Hannum with a time of 4.2. Team ropers Randon Adams and Jory Levy won the title, roping their steer in a speedy 4.4 seconds. Adams and Levy each took home $1,762. In second were the team of Thad Ward and Olin Pulham with a time of 4.6, and in third were J.T. Taylor and Brandon Bates, who put up a time of 5.0.

Humps-Horns.com · 28 · July 2016

For the tie-down roping, Marty Yates posted a time of 7.4 second to take the $2,162 prize. In second with a time of 8.2 was Reese Riemer, while Roy Branco put up a time of 8.7 to be third. The ladies took to the arena and flew around those barrels. The fastest was Ivy Conrado, who stopped the clock at 14.17 to win $3,136. In second was Rachel Dice, who put up a time of 14.20. Sarah Rose McDonald breezed home in 14.29 in a very competitive barrel racing. Colten Jesse grabbed the bull riding, putting up a score of 84.50 on the Flying U Rodeo bull, Soda Water, and taking home $3,299. There was a tie for second between Tag Elliot and Garrett Smith, who were right behind Colten with an 84. The All-Around cowboy was Morgan Grant, who earned $2,520 between the tie-down roping and the steer wrestling. The American Freestyle Bullfighting competition was also a threeday event that had three heats the first two days with the top four competing on the final day. Travis Gidley fought a bull named Tub Thumper to win the first heat with a score of 77. Tanner Zarnetski won the second heat of the first day with a big 83.50 score with the bull Caligula, and the third heat was won by Judd Napier with the bull Ming the Merciless with a score of 78. Day two saw Matt Clouse team up with the bull Dusty to score a 78

in the first heat of round two. Heat two was again won by Zarnetski. He fought Glad Max and got an even bigger score than the previous day, an 84.50. Wayne Ratley, who was second behind Tanner the first round was second again, posting a score of 78 with Power Plant. Michael Early and Sweet Demons earned an 80.50 in heat number three. The four bullfighters who came back for the Finals were Zarnetski with his two wins, Early with a first and a second, Ratley with two seconds and Jon Roberts, who also had two seconds. The men came in with a clean slate, and it was Tanner who continued on his winning ways to claim the title. He scored an 83.50 with the bull 10 Pound Hammer. Second was Early, who scored an 82 with Trainwreck. Ratley finished third and Roberts was fourth. Zarnetski pocketed a cool $7,000 for his hard work. Overall, Helldorado Days was well-received and is expected to be bigger and better than ever in 2017!!

“I have produced the Bullride Mania show at Sundance for 10 years,” Dave explained. “I have invested over $300,000 in paid advertising to grow the business. For someone in the bull business, or someone interested in the bull business, this is the goose that laid the golden egg! Sundance arena is climate controlled. There is no mud, no wind, and people come and pay $14.00 to watch your rodeos. The Lion’s Club handles the food concessions in the arena. They have about 20 people who come in and cook and serve the food. We get a percentage of the revenue that is generated. And because our shows are in the winter, we never have a problem getting bull riders. We draw 20-35 riders for each event.” There is alternative income available through Sundance Arena from circuses, concerts, training, auctions and practice sessions. The entire facility is fenced and there are three major stockyards within 25 miles. It is located just 15 minutes from Interstates 79 and 80.

Dave Martin and his Pennsylvania-based Bullride Mania is proof positive that the spirit of the west is alive and well and flourishing east of the Mississippi River. Dave produces year-round events that continually draw sell-out crowds to both outdoor and indoor arenas. Over a quarter of a million fans are entertained annually by these exciting, innovative shows. Dave’s operation is basically in three parts. The first part is Bullride Mania’s Carnival of Carnage Tour 2016 that lands in 22 county fair outdoor arenas in five states, starting in June and ending in September. Every event has bull riding and barrel racing. But if time permits and parking is available, fans can enjoy bucking broncs, and girl’s break away as well. Dave works closely with each fair to provide what works best for them. Each spring and fall Dave produces an event at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. These events give the fans bull riding, barrel racing and a country music concert. Past concerts have featured Blake Shelton, Trace Adkins, Jason Aldean, and Brad Paisley when they were just up and coming country stars. The fall event includes the Bullride Mania outdoor series Finals.

Sundance is currently home to Dave. He takes care of the animals there on the ranch. “We feed our bulls by hand every day,” Dave shared. “We have some fighting bulls, but they seem to know when to back off. By getting in there and feeding them by hand, it makes them a lot more manageable when we haul them to the 22 different fairgrounds. The majority of my bulls will fight. I’ve always bought bulls that look like rodeo bulls and have some fight in them. I call all my bulls ‘pretty juicy’. They are full of electricity!” There is a second ranch that is 300 miles east in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. This spread is manned by son Casey Martin. Casey is a graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia, and is a professional photographer. He is the official photographer for Bullride Mania. Casey competes in rodeos as a bull dogger. He judges the Bullride Mania events as well as being a member of the “Fly-ByNight Crew”. These are the guys who travel at night to each event and then set it up. They currently have 40-50 bucking bulls and haul bulls from both ranches. Dave’s late son Jesse was an exceptionally good bull rider. Jesse was ranked among the top twenty bull riders in the nation during his senior year of high school. He rode 32 consecutive bulls without being bucked off.

If you have a passion for bull riding and an entrepreneurial spirit, the third piece of Dave’s operation may be of interest to you, because SUNDANCE ARENA AND RANCH IS FOR SALE! This indoor arena is located on 50 fenced acres in the western Pennsylvania town of Fredonia, right on the Ohio/ Pennsylvania border. There are 14 indoor rodeos held here between October and May and most of the spectators hail from Ohio. Sundance Ranch is situated on 100 fenced acres across the road from the arena. Owner financing is available to a qualified buyer. Sundance Arena is an all-steel building that is 170 feet wide, 250 long and 28 feet high. This indoor arena has a 25’ x 50’ x 4’ stage with easy access roll-up door and deck. There are eight bucking chutes, four left and four right and 20 indoor back pens. Sundance seats 2000 spectators and serves the Pittsburgh, Erie, and Youngstown markets. A recent survey showed that 35% of the fans come to every show.

Jesse James Markel has been Dave’s bull fighter for twenty years and is in charge of the event set-up. Austin Suttliff is a member of the Fly-By Night Crew and has been with Dave for ten years. Dave “Showtime” Meyer is the Bullride Mania clown who brings something fresh to every performance. Gena Cox and Caitlyn Walters are the trick riders and the buffalo handlers for the Almost Trained Buffalo. “Bull riding is our main focus,” Dave said. “It always has been. When I was just four years old, my parents took me to see Tommy Steiner’s Rodeo in Harrisburg, at the very same arena where we have our spring and fall shows. I was totally caught up in the whole thing. Bulls and the bull riding business have been my addiction my whole life.” “I rode bulls for 10 years, but I bought my first bull in 1969 at the age of 15,” Dave continued. “I started my business by hauling bulls and leasing them to contractors while I rode in the events. The business expanded and in 1975, at the age of 21, I produced my first sanctioned rodeo in Hanover, Pennsylvania. I’ve learned a lot over the past 40 years. And I’ve put together a show that is way easier on my health and easier for the fans to enjoy.” “There are several things that set us apart from other shows,” Dave noted. “I take pride in the fact that we always start our programs on time. You can set your watch by our start time. We have been doing the outdoor series for 20-40 years. Even though we have our own finals with $10,000 added, contestants and personnel are not required to buy a membership card. All entry fees are $50 except the finals, which are $100. And we’ve had our entry phone number, (717) 334-7724 since 1979. Our entry system is as simple as can be and is open 24/7. Just call and leave a message.” “We had a 20 second clock way before the PBR did,” Dave further explained. “We keep our shows moving which keeps the fans engaged. And we were the first to let the riders pick their bulls. I’m in the bull business and too many times a green rider would draw a champion caliber bull and get bucked off practically before he got clear of the chute. By letting the riders pick their bulls, they are more evenly matched and it is much more entertaining for the fans. Besides, that gives the riders the confidence to know they may be able to walk away with some prize money!” “We offer a $2000 bonus and a Bob Berg buckle to the top money winner who has bucked in every Bullride Mania outdoor show. The

runner-up gets $1000. Third place gets $500 and $250 for fourth place. Joe Parker was our top money winner in 2015. He’s a great guy and has competed in every outdoor series show we have produced in the past nine years.” “I owe a lot to the late Bruce Lehrke,” Dave shared. “Bruce bought Loretta Lynn’s Rodeo Company and had the best rodeo shows of anyone in the northeast, ever. I went through his Rodeo Management College. He taught me everything it takes to produce a good show

Humps-Horns.com · 36 · July 2016

and be a good showman. I am the announcer for our shows, and I make a point to talk to each rider when they pay their fees. That way I get to know a little about them and have something to share with the audience when I introduce them.” “Sundance Arena has the only successful rodeo livestock auction in the northeast,” Dave observed. “I’ve been a car auctioneer all my life, but I really enjoy selling bucking bulls. It’s on the second Saturday of May and we sell about 50 bulls.” “When I train a bull to buck at Sundance, I know I can take him anywhere in the world,” Dave said. “I’ve got a little trade secret. When I get new bulls, I let them go in and out the ‘out’ gate and just mill around in the arena in front of the gate for a few days. When it comes time to buck, they stay right in that area and don’t try to buck

the length of the arena.” “I didn’t get where I’m at by luck,” Dave concluded. “I got here by the grace of God. I give Him all the credit for helping me to accomplish what I have accomplished in my career.” If you’re a passionate fan of bull riding and have an itch to invest in an established bull riding operation, or perhaps a stock contractor looking to expand your business, or just someone interested in investing in something new, SUNDANCE ARENA AND RANCH may be for you. Sundance Arena Rodeo Stock Sale 2016 The tenth annual Sundance Arena Rodeo Livestock Auction was held May 14, 2016 at Fredonia, Pa with fifty bulls consigned. The top selling bull was a four year old yellow brindle #2606, a Candyman grandson, sold by Anchor Bull Co to Mike Miller for $3,250. Honorable mention goes to Casey Martin who bought XB-16, a five year old flat horn red bull from Scott Ballard of Kentucky for $3,200. There were bidders and consignors from Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Michigan, Indiana, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Maryland, and West Virginia. It took two hours and seventeen minutes to buck and sell the fifty bulls consigned that bucked with a rider. Consignors came to trade as Anchor Bull Co, Goshorn Bulls, Thorsel Bulls, C E Taft, Ballard Bulls, Kurt Hostetter, and Puryear Bull Co all sold one hundred per cent of their consignments. Overall percentage sold for bulls bucked with a rider was ninety five percent. Seventeen bull riders entered with Jason Brubacker emerging the winner in the long go with an eighty point ride on #902 Okie Dokie, netting him $333. Herman Detweiler was 78 points on 013 of Goshorns, for $222. In the short go Randy Brubacker was 78 points on Thorsel’s 40-7 to win $555. Nobody qualified on two head so $555. in the aggregate carries over to the first Bullride Mania outdoor show in Crownsville, Md. Making the total added money for Crownsville $3,055. The top bucking horse in the sale was Dave Martin’s #592 Paleface who sold to Jack Simmons from Oklahoma for $1,800. A set of ten roping calves sold for $460 each. Over one hundred corral panels and bow gates were sold. Sundance manager Dave Martin was the auctioneer.
