Letter from the Editor

I don’t know about you but I have enjoyed seeing more rodeos and bull riding events coming back. I know it has been difficult for the committees to make a decision on whether to proceed with their events, postpone and reschedule for a later date, or cancel it for 2020 and come back bigger and better in 2021. Humps N Horns would like to thank all those who have worked diligently through some challenging circumstances and put extensive safety protocols in place to protect all involved in the greatest sport on dirt. It is always great to see cowboys and western sports step up to help lead the way on the road to recovery. This issue brings a lot of great highlights from the Cowboy Protection Association and their Skipper Voss Let’s Get Western Tour. Their tour stop in Jacksboro, Texas was a night full of thrills and spills where the bull fighters were featured with a cowboy protection format and also an American freestyle bull fight, as well. The ABBI held the annual American Heritage Futurity in Duncan, Oklahoma and had a great weekend full of some explosive, young bulls. The were a number of scores over 90

points so it seems the future of the bucking bull industry is very bright and will only continue get better. We also had a chance to catch up with the folks at Silver Creek Rodeo Co. which is lead by Randy and Amber Schmutz. While Silver Creek Rodeo has been around for many years, the Schmutzes just took the reins a couple of years ago and continue to produce quality rodeos across the country. It has been exciting for the Humps N Horns crew to be able to get out again and see some events live and in person. We look forward to seeing you down the road again! Until next time, Terry

Talking “Bull” with Brayden Photos by Andy Watson / BullStock Media

This ride surprised me because this bull bucks really well. This was one of the best scores of the weekend by far, and even though I was a bit harsh on this guy they ended up doing really well.

Hi my name is Brayden Hollywood Brown and I am a miniature bull rider. Today I’m going to talk the PBR team challenge. So let’s get into it. Game number one was team Cooper Tires against team Can Am. Team Cooper Tires absolutely destroyed team Can Am but the highlights were awesome. In the first section of game one, Stetson Lawrence rode Big Mac for 85.25 points. This was a sweet ride into Stetson’s hand and he was given a pretty descent score on the board. Then in section two of game one, it was Jose Vitor Leme on Liven Lucky for 84.75 points. The Cooper Tires team put up four scores to get it done to win the first game and that’s what matters.

Finally it was team Union Home Mortgage facing team Wrangler. This was a close battle but here are the highlights from each section. It was Team Wrangler that was better in section one when the captain Colten Jesse rode Thunders Cartel for 86.25 points. This was an awesome ride into Jesse’s hand for the lead going into section two. In section two it was Roscoe Jarboe who had the better score for team Wrangler with an 86.25 point bull ride. Even though team Wrangler had better scores, team Union Home Mortgage had more qualified rides and that’s how it ended with team Union Home Mortgage on top. The next day the PBR kicked things off with team Cooper Tires against team YETI. Team YETI didn’t get a qualified ride but team Cooper Tires was able to get it done. Jose Vitor Leme on Beast Of Burden for 88.25 points was one of the highlights of the section. We have never seen Beast of Burden buck in the PBR. He was rank but Leme handled him like a champ. Then in section two Stetson Lawrence rode Keno for 88.50 points. This was another bull that we had never seen before until Stetson rode him for big numbers.

Game number 2 followed with team YETI and team Las Vegas. There was only one score between these two teams. In my opinion, these are two really talented teams. The problem is that team YETI was led by Derek Kolbaba and he has had a rough few years starting back in 2017. Also, team Las Vegas was lead by Stetson Wright, a PRCA rider, that has recently been really hot. However, the bulls he has been on were no where near the caliber of bulls in the PBR. In the end, team Las Vegas won with the only qualified ride and that was Stetson Wright on Big Black Cat for 88.25 points. Sage Kimzey

A Covert Operation As Christians if we are taught to constantly manipulate our conversations to the subject of the Lord, that approach can put great pressure on us. So much so that we may miss the pleasure of living free in sonship as well as miss seeing people experience the process of life that will produce true conversion to sonship. I can remember so many road trips (one in particular) where I was so consumed with how to witness to this guy that I missed a relationship with him. I wish that I’d just hung and gotten to know his story and still (20 years later) be engaged in a relationship. My pressure to witness to him caused him to get away from me and God, fast and far. I think if I’d have approached it the right way, through relationship I would still have a place in his life. As it stands, I have no contact with him and have no idea what his relationship is to the Father. Father is relational and desires for us to represent Him through relationships. Manipulated conversations will most likely push people to resist the Fathers Spirit or even worse, a dead prayer to a God whose Spirit was never involved in the conversation to start with. Jesus Loves You! Cody Custer

Inspiration Point

“faith is the art of holding on to things your reason has once accepted in spite of your changing moods,” ~ C.S. Lewis “Faith enables us to understand what God does. Faith enables us to see what others cannot see as a result, faith enables us to do what others cannot do!” ~ BEC CHOOSE FAITH!

by Keno Shrum

Guest article writen by Jon Haley, Hallmark Baptist Church - Fort Worth, Texas

Faith Over Fear Faith requires actions. You can say you have faith but your actions reveal the truth about what you say. Today in my reading plan I read Numbers 14. Numbers 14 is a sad reality of a lack of faith. The Israelites failed to live by faith and chose to live in fear. The results were a disaster that lead them on a 40 year death march. They lacked faith and wanted to stone their leaders and go back to Egypt. They were choosing to go back into slavery. There is so many applications and thoughts in the Bible that speak to this exact thing. However, today I want to focus on their lack of faith. God had revealed His power to them when they were in Egypt. HE brought them out, and yet they still did not have faith. Only two out of the twelve had enough faith to believe God could deliver them. Only 2!?! I wonder if that is an accurate percentage of our current culture. Do only two out of twelve actually have enough faith to act on what God tells them? I hope not! I want to be a person of faith. I want to live by faith not fear. Numbers 14:6-9 6 But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes; 7 and they spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying: “The land we passed through to spy out is an exceedingly good land. 8 If the LORD delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us, ‘a land which flows with milk and honey.’ 9 Only do not rebel against the LORD, nor fear the people of the land, for they are our bread; their protection has departed from them, and the LORD is with us. Do not fear them.” Faith requires action. The ten chose to put fear over faith. They chose to fear man and not have faith in God They chose to glare at their problems and glance at God. They should have glanced at their problems and glared at God. What are you focused on? Are you focused on your problems or God? Choose to live in faith today. Choose to believe God is in control and God is good.

Outside the Arena with...

Shorty Gorham By Georgia Akers

Anyone who follows the sport of bull riding knows the name Shorty Gorham. He is one of the premier bull fighters along with Jesse Byrne, Cody Webster and of course the awesome Frank Newsom. They are the bull fighters of the PBR who work very diligently to protect the bull riders even putting themselves in harm’s way if necessary. I have been trying to interview Shorty for a long time and was finally able to corral him during this stay at home that we are living with right now. I am assuming everyone knows Shorty as a bull fighter, so I wanted to focus on the fast-developing sport of American Freestyle Bullfighting. I have watched this at the World Finals and at a few ABBI events but knew very little. But you cannot watch it and not appreciate the participants and the bulls. What bravery and agility! Since Shorty is very involved in this sport, I reached out to him.

Tell us a little about yourself. My mom has papers that I wrote as a child where I wrote about my desire to fight bulls. She saves everything! I was born in El Centro, California and lived on a small farm. As a kid I participated in calf roping and team penning. I rodeoed and worked on a ranch. I had an older friend, who I admired, who was leaving to become a bull fighter. This was my chance! As I went to district rodeos, the rodeo sponsor would let me fight bulls and in return I did not pay any entry fees for my rodeoing. So I learned on the job. But at night, I had bull riding videotapes and would spend at least ½ hour per night studying the bull fighters and bulls and pick them apart: positions of the bull rider, where the bull’s eyes were focused etc.- trying to improve my craft. It was important because at many smaller rodeos there was only one bull fighter/clown who was to protect the rider and entertain the crowd. Larger rodeos would have 2 men. In 1997 I got my PRCA card and it was mandatory to have two fighters. My wife is Amanda, whose dad is Phil Lyne, a championship all-cowboy. Amanda grew up in a rodeo family and understands the life. Her sister Samantha is married to JB Mauney. We have three children: my stepson Tanner (21), London (12) and Ridge (18 months) and live in Cotulla, Texas. Tell us about the transition from rodeo clown to bull fighter. Wick Peth was the first bull fighter who wore no make-up and saw himself as a bull fighter. Shortly before my era, rodeo clowns would do their acts along

Humps-Horns.com · 16 · July 2020

with bull fighting. They had to provide comic relief and entertainment in addition to protecting the rider, because many rodeos weren’t going to hire two people. Thankfully, the change came to just being a bull fighter at the time I got into the sport because I am not a funny guy. Tell us about the history of American Freestyle Bullfighting (AFB). It has been around since the 1980’s-90’s. At rodeos, it would be the last event. But with the founding of the PBR, bucking bulls became famous as did the riders and it disappeared. Now, it is making a huge comeback because the skills are different than being a protective bull fighter. This showcases bravery and athleticism. Where a protective bull fighter rushes in a burning building to rescue someone, an AFB bull fighter just rushes in the building putting only himself in danger. They have to be a little bit crazy. I have noticed that the bulls are different from your traditional bucking bull. What are they?

fought too much, they will sour and quit. Usually they are fought only 4-6 times a year. With the registration with ABBI, hopefully we will see heifers that will have the bloodlines to have the longevity as time goes on. Why would anyone participate in this sport?

These are fighting bulls whose bloodlines came from Mexico or Spain. They have been bred since the 1700’s and were bred for one purpose: unfortunately, in Mexico or Spain it is a fight to the death. In English, their name is brave bull. In a herd they are okay but, in an arena, where they are cornered, they will fight to the death. These bulls are dangerous from the day they are born. They are as dangerous in the back pen as they are in the arena. Where most bucking bulls are calm in the back pens, come out, buck and leave the arena, these bulls will stay on attacking the bull fighter until they are pulled off.

Some bull fighters are participating to make a name for themselves to make an easier transition to cowboy protection fighting. Others are in it for the sport and the adrenaline rush. If you are good, you can make a living with AFB.

In Spain and Mexico, the stock contractors are as famous as the matadors. People will buy tickets to see a stock contractor’s bulls.

It is mandatory to engage the bull for 45 seconds. You cannot quit the bull or if you are getting bounced around you can signal the judge and call the fight. If the bull and you are engaged, you can get an additional 15 seconds for a total of 60 seconds.

Over the years, these bulls have come to the US. The AFB is now partnering with ABBI to start a registry just as ABBI has with the bucking bulls. Are there any issues between the bulls in Mexico and Spain and the American bulls? Unfortunately, in Mexico and Spain, the bull only fights once unless he is pardoned. But here the bull has to fight over and over. So, our bulls need to be bred for longevity. If they are

There are at least 35 events. Some are stand alone and some are in conjunction with a rodeo. Right now, it is the hottest commodity in western sports. How does the sport work?

The bulls are awarded points for aggression, speed/agility, willingness to stay engaged and difficulty of being fought. Bullfighters want to show they are in control of the bull at all times and perform creative tricks ranging from jumping to flips. If you put yourself in a dangerous position, you get more points such as jumps over the bull, on your knees- extra daring things to show you are dominating that bull.

Humps-Horns.com · 17 · July 2020

The judges divide points up as in bull riding: 50 points for the bull, 50 points for the fighter. If the fighter performs some highrisk maneuvers, he can earn extra points. What type of protective gear and other protections are available to protect the fighter? First, the horns are tipped just as the bucking bulls are tipped. There is no requirement that the fighter wear any protective gear but it is strongly suggested that they do. The vest is the most important and all of them do wear them so it doesn’t have to be mandatory and it doesn’t hamper their ability to move. There are no safety men in the arena because these bulls have good vision and you do not want them to be distracted. They are to focus on the bull fighter. However, depending on the size of the arena, there will be 3-5 men on the fence. They stay as still as possible to not distract the bull. But if a bull fighter gets in trouble, they immediately jump in the arena. I noticed steers being used as well as bulls. Why? At the training schools, they will use females. Actually, steers are harder to fight. The steer is 12-18 inches across the shoulder and can move more quickly. They can also turn their neck. They are not called steers but Stags. Bulls shoulder width is 18-24 across the shoulder and cannot turn as quick.

How does a rider get to the finals? It is based on points and added money. It is possible to make the finals going to two-five events, if they are majors. There is not a specific number of events but the ones that have the most points can help get you considered. There are hundreds of people of quality. There is a screening process and then a drawing for a place. Sometimes a name will be pulled out of the draw that just is not ready to compete at this level. Our main concern is safety. These bulls at the finals are like no other. They have to be ready to compete at this level. The committee will let them know and as they improve, they will compete at the finals. Where before the finals for AFB has been at SouthPoint, I have heard a rumor that it will not be there. Where will it be? We are in the process of planning what will be the best event in Vegas during PBR Finals week. It will be at the Excalibur on Friday and Saturday as a PBR after party. It will be a stand-alone event and require a separate ticket. We are planning audience participation and a lot of other things. Be looking for an announcement from PBR. It is going to be a great, fun event. For those who are interested in attending AFB events you can find information on the internet. Just put in American Freestyle Bullfighting. By Kelly B. Robbins

Silver Creek Rodeo Co. Stephenville, Texas has been called the “Cowboy Capital of the World”. It is from this iconic location that Randy and Amber Schmutz own and operate the Silver Creek Rodeo Company. They purchased this Arkansas City, Kansas based company, all of the livestock and the rodeo contracts from Matt Williams in 2018. Matt had produced rodeos for seventeen years. Randy and Amber then moved it to Stephenville and have been producing rodeos for two years. As of this writing. the Covid-19 pandemic has most of the rodeo world on hold. “This has been a tailspin for sure,” Randy said about the pandemic’s effect on his business. “It has been like watching a bad movie! I am ready for the movie to be over! We had twelve events slated this year in New Mexico, Kansas, Missouri and Iowa. So far, nine of the events we had scheduled have cancelled due to the pandemic. We will probably only produce three events in 2020.” “But we are going to survive Covid-19,” Randy declared. “We are hoping to get back on track in 2021 and continue the legacy of the Silver Creek Rodeo Company.”

Randy grew up in a little east Texas town called Center, Texas, near the Louisiana border. He was around rodeo his whole life and rode bulls in high school and into his early 20’s. “I rode bulls, so that was in my blood,” Randy shared. “But growing up I always wanted to be a radio disc jockey, an on-air radio personality. One day I walked into my local radio station in Center and asked for a job. They asked if I had any experience, and I told them I did not. I impersonated a disc jockey doing the weather report, and they hired me on the spot!” “Well, it was a fly or die beginning,” Randy chuckled. “They pointed out the equipment to me, showed me how it worked, asked if I had any questions, and then left me in the control room on my own! Within a year, the town was hosting a rodeo event. As the local radio disc jockey, I was asked to do some prerodeo announcements. The rodeo stock contractor knew me as a bull rider but had no idea I was a disc jockey. He later invited me to announce a rodeo in Liberty, Mississippi, where there were a couple thousand fans. I basically had no experience, but someone waved a magic wand and I became a professional rodeo announcer!”

“I have been announcing rodeos and bull riding events now for 34 years,” Randy revealed. “Early on I was exposed to some particularly good, professional rodeo stock contractors and announcers, who helped me along the way. I have been fortunate and have traveled all over the United States announcing rodeos and bull riding events. I was selected eight times to announce the PBR World Finals. I have raised bulls that have bucked in the PBR, and then announced some of the events they were entered in. I’ve even flanked my bulls at the PBR World Finals and also announced the event! I have announced eleven different high-profile rodeo and bull riding finals 50 different times in the past 34 years. In 2014, I was selected to announce RFD-TV’s The American rodeo and have done so for seven consecutive years.” As we continued to explore Randy’s history, we learned that he moved to Stephenville in 1992. In 1993, he met his wife, Amber at a Bismarck, North Dakota rodeo he was announcing. He and his Montana bride will have been married for 27 years this December, and have two sons and one daughter, ages 24, 21, and 20. “Amber has been alongside me for the whole ride,” Randy said. “She has been a very integral part of our success in everything we have done.” Randy has worn many different hats in the rodeo and bucking bull industries. He has transitioned from being an announcer, to a full-time rancher raising bucking bulls, produced numerous high-profile bucking stock sales, to a stock contractor and rodeo producer. “I started out as a rodeo announcer,” Randy shared. “Then Amber and I started raising bucking bulls in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. Our ranch is the XS Ranch, and our bucking bull business was a very successful program. As a matter of fact, we were advertisers in Humps N Horns way back then!”

Randy & Amber Schmutz at the National Finals Rodeo.

“About that time in the late 1990’s,” Randy added, “Bob Tallman started the Rodeo Stock Registry, which later became the ABBI (American Bucking Bull Incorporated). He and I are friends, and Amber and I were part of the registry from the beginning. We were in on the ground floor and became the 26th member of the Rodeo Stock Registry. The first-ever ABBI World Champion Classic Bull was #13 Big Deal. He was born on our ranch, and later sold as a cow-calf pair and ended up with Dillon and HD Page at D&H Cattle Company!” “In 2004, we started producing bull riding events,” Randy continued. “In 2005, Amber and I started an event called The

Spring Spectacular in Stephenville, which became a cornerstone event of the ABBI, and was later voted ABBI Event of the Year! We produced that event for 15 years.” “Amber and I teamed up with Jerry Nelson and Jimmy Ray in the fall of 2010 to create the UBBI (United Bucking Bulls Incorporated). We helped build it, and over seven seasons we paid out over eight million dollars back to the bucking bull owners. Prior to this start-up, we sold all our bucking bull stock and the breeding program. We didn’t want to be breeding and competing against the contractors who were competing in our events. We sold 167 females when we shut the breeding program down.”

“By 2017, the bucking bull industry had become a little saturated with too many events,” Randy said. “We didn’t feel like the UBBI could survive the dilution of events in the industry, and we decided to shut it down. Our last UBBI Finals was in 2017.” “Even though we were raising rodeo livestock and producing bucking bull events in the early 2000’s, we never considered ourselves full-time stock contractors. Now, with the purchase of the Silver Creek Rodeo Company, we are a fully vested rodeo stock contracting business.” Unless otherwise noted, photos are provided courtesy of Silver Creek Rodeo Co.

Continued from Page 7 Up next was team Las Vegas versus Team Union Home Mortgage. Team Union Home Mortgage didn’t have the best day but they still put up a fight. In the end team Las Vegas came out on top with three respectable scores. Garrett Smith rode Copperpoint for 83 points. This was the only qualified ride in section one. Garrett showed his skills but the bull didn’t have his best day. In the end team Las Vegas got a score. Then in section two Chase Dougherty rode Jungle Can Do for 86.50 points. This bull is pretty old veteran bull that went into Chase’s hand to the left cranking it and Chase handled him really well for not riding in PBR ever before. In the third and final game of the night it was team Can Am against team Wrangler. Now this was another one of those nights where team Can Am absolutely wrecked team Wrangler. The points were 347.25 to 0. The best in section one was Fabiano Vieira against Major Threat which ended in 88 points. Fabiano has been on tour for a while and this was one of my favorite rides that I’ve seen him make this season. Major Threat is also a veteran bull and went into Fabiano’s hand. Generally when you match up two veterans it ends up in big numbers like this. In section two Ezekiel Mitchell paired up with Texas Comfort Airs First Blood for 87.75 points. This bull goes to the right almost every time and anytime this bull is covered it always ends with big numbers. This bull had a lot of up and down which is why Zeke scored so well. To kick off the final games of the week we had team Las Vegas against team Wrangler. There were two qualified rides by team Las Vegas for section one. Chase Dougherty rode Silent Night for 87.25 points. I don’t really know much about Chase but whenever he makes rides like this one he’s pretty good. Silent Night is a bull that we have seen a couple times and most of the time he will help a rider produce numbers like 86 or 87 points. Next we had Stetson Wright against Dynamite Cap for 87.75 points. These were the only scores between these two teams. These big scores by team

Las Vegas propelled them to 3 and 0 on the weekend, advancing them a few weekends ahead. Next in game two was team YETI against team Can Am. Section one of game two seemed like team Can Am was going to win again but in section two team YETI came back for the win. It started out with Fabiano Vieira scoring 86.50 points on Notorious. Notorious is a new bull that we haven’t seen too many times. He went into Fabiano’s hand and that was the young bulls mistake. This ride propelled team Can Am to the top. Then in section two it was all Derek Kolbaba on Bluestone for 87.25 points. Bluestone is another veteran bull that always bucks really well. Derek’s score helped launched his team to their first victory. Then it was time for the two most skilled teams, team Cooper Tires versus team Union Home Mortgage. Even though Team Cooper Tires had the younger and stronger guys doesn’t mean you should count team Union Home Mortgage out, they have the power and leadership of Silvano Alves. Team Cooper tires ends up on top but dont worry team Union Home Mortgage is not going out without a fight. In section one we saw Luciano De Castro ride Rising Sun for 88.50 points. On paper this looked just as good as it did in the arena. Luciano went out there and dominated this bull just like his team knew he would. After that Sage Kimzey came back firing in section two with 87.25 on Big Mac. Big Mac was a bull that we had never seen before until Stetson Lawrence rode him in game one. After seeing Steston’s ride Sage knew what to do and rode him like the six time champ he is. Thank you for reading I look forward to writing to you each month. Western Wanderings la reata I use my own riata rope When cowboying the herd Cowhide rope is what I make But elk is much preferred

He felt the pain and stole a look And there before his eyes Was a bloody mess around his horn And a really big surprise

La Reata is my lariat Braided rawhide and real strong This cowboy tool I use a lot It really is quite long

In the loop around his saddle horn Was what used to be his thumb He took his bandana and wrapped his hand Which by now had gotten numb

You don’t show up at round-up With a fancy rope like mine Unless you are an expert Not a gunsel with a twine!

He climbed on down and took a stick From the branding fire, glowing hot And cauterized that wounded hand Then drank coffee, black and hot!

My lasso is a favored thing I handle it well, I’d say But when it’s time to dally My thumb stays out the way!

He dried that thumb like jerky Then pinned it on his brim To remind all the other old cowboys That losing a thumb can be grim!

For I know a good old cowboy Who was branding strays one day He tried to set the dally But his thumb got in the way! By Kelly B. Robbins
