Talking “Bull” with Brayden
Hi, my name is Brayden Hollywood Brown and I am a junior bull rider. Today I am going to be recapping the finals for the local association my brother and I ride in Central Texas Junior Bull Riders, CTJBR. So, let’s get into it. Kicking things off in round number one Elliot Gregory rode her sheep for 60 points. Elliot’s sheep ran around the arena and Miss Gregory booted the sheep for the entire ride for the round win. In calf riding Caysen Stanley rode the 22 calf for 61 points. The 22 jump kicked around the pen and threw a few belly rolls at Caysen. Caysen sat up and kept his chin down for second in the round. Kutter Farrington rode calf 30 for 63 points. As soon as the gate opened Kutter went to kicking on ol’ 30. Kutter dressed this rank lil’ calf up for the round one win. In the Jr steer riding Colemen Berry rode number 79 for 65 points. 79 bucked well with some nasty belly rolls. Colemen got rocked off to the side a few times, but he hung in there for a decent score. Tate Gregory rode #49 for 67.50 points. #49 is a big jersey steer that likes to switch back and forth with some wicked belly rolls. Tate kept his toes locked and turned out to increase his lead in the standings. In the Senior steer riding I rode 45 for 69 points. 45 was one jump out and cranked it around to the right which was away from my hand. I sat up tall and got around the corners until he switched and started spinning into my hand to the left. Right as the buzzer went off, he jumped out of the spin, and I stepped off the side. Preston Rodreguiz rode 164 for 70 points. 164 blew out of the chute into his usual left-handed spin, but after the first round 164 jumped out of it and jump kicked around the pen with a couple belly rolls. Right at the buzzer 164 started spinning to the right. The bull fighters pulled 164 out of the spin and Preston hopped off. In the bulls there were no qualified rides.
Gregory brought his grit on Blue Duck for 64 points. Blue Duck is a bull that Tate practices on pretty regularly which already gave Tate the upper hand going into this matchup. Tate handled Blue Duck with ease giving him a round two check and a good bit of points. Easton Green stole the show though on 172 for 67 points. 172 is a big black steer that likes to whip his head around and try and hook the rider. Easton didn’t let those big baseball bat horns distract him which ended up getting him some pocket change along with the round two win. In the Senior steer riding I rode 94 for 68.50 points. 94 is a bull that I’m more than familiar with, and he had his same trip of being very strong and trying to jerk me on his head. I kept my feet done and drove to the front every jump. Jesus Villa rode 164 for 69.50 points. 164 had the same trip as he did in round number one. Jesus got around the first round then 164 jumped out of the spin and jump kicked around the pen with some nice belly rolls allowing Mr. Villa to get the round two win. Once again there were no scores in the Open Bulls. At the end of the year the top riders in each division were Mutton Busting Champion: Champion Elliot Gregory Reserve Champion Waylon Garcia Calf Riding Champion: Kutter Farrington Reserve Champion Corbin Bunn Jr Steer Riding Champion: Champion Tate Gregory Reserve Champion Coleman Berry Sr Steer Riding Champion: Jesus Villa Reserve Champion Brayden “Hollywood” Brown Bull Riding Champion: Champion Twister Easley Reserve Champion Kevin Thomas Thank you for reading. To find out more about me find me on any social media are braydenhollywoodbrown. Thank you, Brayden Hollywood Brown
Elliot Gregory was on fire that day as she won her second round of the day with 59 points. Elliot had a great sheep that ran faster than any of the other sheep. Elliot really had to squeeze her legs so she didn’t lose her balance. In the calf riding Kutter Farrington rode ol’ rank 6 for 60 points. Another just perfect calf for Kutter to rack up some more points on. Ol’ rank 6 didn’t do anything special but was good enough for second in the round. Corbin Bunn rode Oreo for 62 points. Corbin made Oreo look pretty easy if I’m being completely honest but his dominance over the bulls was what ultimately got him those extra points and the round two win. Jr steer riding Tate

Dr. Gary Warner By Georgia Akers
About three or four years ago, my partner, Cody Hebert, and I had a three year old bucking bull that showed a lot of promise. We named him Midnight Rider. I remember watching him from the fence. He was beautiful: all muscle and alert. I was looking forward to Vegas and hoped he would make the Classic Finals. Three weeks later, I received a call from Cody informing me that Midnight had died of a horn infection that spread to his brain. I really had a hard time wrapping my head around this. How could a magnificent animal like that just die? I went to the internet to see if I could find a Bovine Health for Dummies book. There were none but I did find a two volume set that was written as textbooks for vet students. I bought it and discovered that it was way beyond my capacity but the illustrations kind of showed how the horns, sinuses and brain are all connected. The true followers of this sport appreciate the bovine athletes as much as the cowboys. We have our favorites. A few years ago we lost the great champion, Sweet Pro’s Long John, owned by HD and Dillon Page. Recently we lost one of the top contenders for 2018 championship bull with the death of Chad Berger’s Pearl Harbor. We think of these bulls as indestructible. They are so strong and all muscle. But there is more to the care and maintenance of these animals than most people realize. If you want to learn about bovine health there is only one vet to reach out and contact. He is the man for not only bucking bulls but also show cattle. Dr. Gary Warner’s practice is at Elgin Veterinary Clinic and Hospital in Elgin Texas (for you non Texans, it is close to Austin). He specializes in cattle and horses. If you have an expensive animal, this is where you go. To prove the point-when Bushwhacker needed surgery and post-operative care, Dr. Warner was his doctor. That kind of sums up Dr. Warner’s ability and reputation. I want to thank Dr. Warner for his time. I had to catch him between surgeries.
Please tell us a little about yourself (Education, training, etc). I grew up in northern Louisiana in a ranching family. My father ran an auction barn in Gerriday, LA. I graduated from Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1980. I started work at Elgin Veterinary Hospital and have been there ever since. I grew up using horses daily for ranch chores and sale barn work and was always wanting to learn more about them. Cattle just came to me naturally. They were the only pets I grew up having. I never considered another line of work. I guess I was just cut out for it. I still enjoy the challenges presented by vet medicine every day and I hope there are many productive years ahead of me. Could you elaborate on the general routine maintenance necessary with bucking bulls/cattle? Mature bucking bulls actually require little in the way of direct maintenance. A good quality forage offered free choice, meaning they can eat what they want, with some type of energy/ protein supplement based strictly on the forage quality available giving consideration to the activity level of the bovine athlete. In other words, a bull that is at rest does not need as high a level of nutrition as one that is actively competing every week. Of course routine annual vaccinations are important; most often with mature animals primarily clostridial vaccinations are important along with possibly leptospirosis vaccination. Clostridial diseases can cause a variety of infections that can
Humps-Horns.com · 10 · November 2022
form with wound contamination or through ingestion. Some of these diseases can be fatal. Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that can infect the kidney and genital tract of cattle. The most common transmission is direct or indirect contact with infected urine. This can cause a cow to lose her calf.
Because the frontal sinus cannot drain properly when inflammation occurs, sometimes a life threatening condition can arise. Accumulation of purulent sinus fluid can actually cause a localized infection/inflammation of the bone and this may lead to the “infection” crossing the calvarium (brain case) causing a meningitis and leading to the death of the animal. This is a rare event.
What are the most common ailments that occur with the bucking stock?
What about skeletal issues? What are the most common problems? How do you treat them?
The most common ailments we see with bucking stock is related to feeding management. Whether it is accidental over consumption of feed or where the nutritional quality isn’t as good as it should be. Digestive disturbances are by far the number one issue we see.
Skeletal issues can occur but mostly it is self-induced by bulls fighting. It occurs more with the higher athletic ability of the bull. The back can get injured due to the vertical buck and twist. Arthritis in the knees and hock can happen.
What are the most common ailments that occur with the calves? Many different issues can affect all calves, not just bucking calves. Clostridial disease, respiratory illness and leptospirosis are just a few of the major disease issues we face. Parasitism is another large concern of young cattle. It depends on geographic location and climate conditions. For instance, in the Gulf Coast area where the climate is moist there are more problems with parasites than in a dry arid area of the southwest. Diarrheal diseases are another concern. Good management and proper diagnosis is paramount. It seems like some fatalities have been horn infections or blood clots. Could you explain the relationship between the horn and the brain/head in bovines?
What is the most common cause of death in bucking bulls? Bucking bulls are a pretty hardy bunch if taken care of properly. We see problems with the horns and man-made issues by not housing them correctly or not maintaining them as required. What has been the most difficult treatment you have encountered in treating bucking bulls? 10-15 years ago there was HB5, a hemorrhagic bowel syndrome. It was difficult to save the bulls. It first appeared in dairy cattle. It was a clostridial infection of the gut. A true cause was never found. It kind of disappeared. How hard is it to treat a 1700 pound bull?
Horn infections in bucking bulls are a concern. Although rare, they can be life threatening if not properly diagnosed. Some show evidence of discomfort by pressing or rubbing of the horn on a post or fence rail. Others may tilt their head to the affected side and/or drop an ear and shake their head. Parenteral antibiotics (medicine by injection) and anti-inflamatories may help but usually are not curative of the problem. Establishing drainage of the horn and local treatment of the horn is imperative. In the instance of a severe infection, it is best to surgically remove the entire horn along with a portion of the frontal sinus to avoid prolonged and costly treatment.
Treatment of bucking stock can be difficult. The larger they are, the more taxing it is to handle them. Facilities are the key: hydraulic tilt table or squeeze chutes are paramount to proper restraint. If an animal is not properly restrained they are more apt to hurt themselves or the folks that are trying to help them.
After the interview was over, Dr. Warner and I got into a discussion of veterinary medicine and the need for large animal vets. It is hard work, physically demanding and challenging to do what is required. There is a higher attrition rate with large animal vets. Many of the vets do not want to live in a rural environment. There is a great need for vets to go into this area of medicine.

#InCaseYouMissedIt: Inaugural Team Series season heads to culmination in Las Vegas By Darci Miller
The moment we’ve all been waiting for is finally here – the inaugural PBR Team Series Championship kicks off Nov. 4-6 in Las Vegas. Through 10 regular-season events, we’ve seen rank rides, walk-off heroics, agonizing heartbreak and everything in between. It’s been a long road, so in case you missed it, we’ve got you covered. Miss a moment of the action this season? Here’s what happened around the PBR. CHEYENNE The Missouri Thunder started the season on the best note possible, going a perfect 2-0 at Cheyenne Frontier Days to take the firstever PBR Team Series event win. The Thunder won their first game courtesy of free agent signing Adriano Salgado, who notched the first qualified ride in Team Series history. Cheyenne also saw the first 90-point ride in Team Series history, courtesy of Boudreaux Campbell for the Carolina Cowboys. KANSAS CITY At the first three-day, team-hosted event of the season, the Arizona Ridge Riders put on a dominant 3-0 performance to earn the event win at Outlaw Days and improve to the No. 1 ranking. The hometown Kansas City Outlaws took on the Thunder in a hotly contested battle for Missouri, with the Thunder ultimately winning after each team went 3-for-5.
ANAHEIM It was only a matter of time before Jose Vitor Leme really made his impact felt. Leme improved to 7-for-10 on the season and propelled his Austin Gamblers to the event win. The Thunder, meanwhile, took over the No. 1 ranking again thanks to their defeat of the Ridge Riders. NASHVILLE Leme once again hit the jackpot for the Gamblers, delivering another walk-off ride before converting in the Bonus Round to cement the event win at Stampede Days and overtake the No. 1 ranking. Just days after he was signed by the Nashville Stampede, threetime World Champion Silvano Alves provided the late-game heroics needed to make the Stampede the first squad to win a game on home soil. AUSTIN The Gamblers hoped to make it three in a row when they headed home for Gambler Days, earning their league-leading eighth consecutive game in the process. However, the Carolina Cowboys ruined their party, going 3-0 to take the event win. WINSTON-SALEM The Cowboys may not have won their hometown event, but they did take over the No. 1 ranking in front of the Carolina faithful. After contemplating retirement, Cooper Davis returned to power the Cowboys to a 2-1 record at home. However, the Oklahoma Freedom were unmatched at Cowboy Days, going 3-0 to win the event. OKLAHOMA CITY The Freedom became the first team to win its home event, thanks to not one, not two, but three walk-off rides from Derek Kolbaba. Then, in the Bonus Round, Chase Outlaw rode 2021 YETI World Champion Bull Woopaa for 94.5 points – the highest of both the season and his career.
Daylon Swearingen - Carolina Cowboys
On a more somber note, Ouncie Mitchell tragically passed away, and his cousin Ezekiel was in Oklahoma to ride in his memory.

Earlier in the weekend, the Rattlers made history as the first team ever to go a flawless 5-for-5 in a game. Kaique Pacheco made some history of his own, becoming the 21st rider in history to record 300 rides on the premier series. With 19 rides on the season, Jose Vitor Leme clinched the $50,000 MVP award… …and the Gamblers clinched the No. 1 seed in Las Vegas.

Marcelo Procopio Pereira - Missouri Thunder RIDGEDALE At Thunder Days in Missouri, it was the Texas Rattlers’ turn in the winner’s circle, earning the event win with their 3-0 showing thanks to two walk-off rides from Daniel Keeping. The Freedom, meanwhile, tied the Gamblers’ league-leading winning streak at eight. FORT WORTH Make it two in a row for Texas – the Rattlers went 3-0 again, again thanks to Daniel Keeping’s heroics, to notch their second consecutive event win, this time on home soil. For the first time all season, the Freedom moved into the No. 1 rank when they took down the then-top-ranked Cowboys. GLENDALE The Rattlers remained red hot at the regular-season finale, winning their record-setting 10th consecutive game and third consecutive event to clinch the No. 2 seed heading into the PBR Team Series Championship.

Leme Wins $50,000 MVP Award as Austin Controls Its Destiny for No. 1 Seed By Justin Felisko
Jose Vitor Leme clinched the MVP award with his ride that helped Austin to victory over the Outlaws. GLENDALE, Ariz. – Austin Gamblers coach Michael Gaffney still smiles when thinking back to the PBR Team Series season-opener in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Team captain Jose Vitor Leme stood before his teammates with an important message. “This is a conscious choice,” Gaffney recalls the two-time World Champion telling his teammates. “You’ve got to choose if you want to be a winner or be somebody that just tags along.” And if the Gamblers had a bunch of followers, well, they were going to be losers. Leme despises losing, and that would never be an option for him. The 26-year-old sets his expectations for his teammates extremely high, but that is only because the bar he sets for himself is nothing short of perfection. “He expects a lot from himself,” Gaffney explained. “So when he doesn’t see that same – all the verbiage we use – the dedication, the focus, the hard work. And it’s fine, because he likes to joke around and stuff, too, but there’s a certain time and place for that. But he’s not very tolerant when it comes to haphazardly going about this, because that’s just not the way he lives. He thinks and breathes it. “He’s just a perfectionist. That’s the best thing to say about him, and his focus on doing all those almost menial tasks. It’s kind
of cool to watch, and in our own selfish way, good for us. He’s everything and more. Everything he does is very meticulous. He’s very meticulous about everything. Even just the crease in his hat to the way he dresses.” It is why it came as no surprise that Leme clinched the league’s inaugural $50,000 MVP award on Saturday night at Rattler Days via his 85-point ride on Chainsaw in the team’s 263.25-257 victory over the Kansas City Outlaws (12-15, Ridge Rider Days 1-1). “It’s always a goal of mine to win something,” Leme said. “If you have a prize and you can win that, I always want to win that. I want to win everything I can, but MVP is not my first goal, of course. My first goal is to help the team and win with the team. Of course, I am so happy to be the first one ever to win this prize. It’s another great accomplishment for my career.” The ride was also fitting because it accomplished Leme’s priority: leading the Austin Gamblers to victory. Leme’s ride on Saturday night pushed Austin back into the lead against Kansas City, and it became the difference-maker in Austin earning the crucial win once 2022 Rookie of the Year Bob Mitchell failed to reach the 8-second mark on Off Campus and Koltin Hevalow bucked off South Paw. “I’m glad he’s on our team,” Gaffney said with a laugh. “What he brings to the locker room, just being beside him makes our guys better.” The Gamblers have now won four of their past five games to surge to No. 1 in the PBR Team Series ahead of the regular-season finale on Sunday at Desert Diamond Arena (5 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network). Austin will clinch the No. 1 seed for the 2022 PBR Team Series Championship (Nov. 4-6) with a victory over the No. 4 Arizona Ridge Riders (14-12-1). A loss against Arizona could push Austin to as low as No. 5 in the standings if the No. 2 Texas Rattlers (15-12), No. 3 Oklahoma Freedom (15-12) and No. 5 Carolina Cowboys (14-13) all are victorious on Sunday afternoon. (Editor’s note: Ties in the PBR Team Series standings are broken via Bonus Round points). The Top 2 teams in the regular season get a first-round bye for the PBR Team Series Championship and automatically advance to the second round of the postseason competition at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. “It’s important to get a bye because you’ve got one step ahead of
Humps-Horns.com · 16 · November 2022
the other teams,” Leme said. “Of course, everybody wants to be in that first or second spot. We’re just going to try to do our job and try to ride our bulls and do what we’ve been doing.” The MVP is awarded to the rider who finishes the regular season leading the PBR Team Series in total aggregate score. Leme is 19for-24 (79.16%), and No. 2 Daylon Swearingen (16-for-27) will be unable to catch Leme on the final day of the regular season on Sunday. It was an extremely close battle between the two riders who also
competed for the 2022 World Championship inside Dickies Arena this past May. “It’s always hard to compete against somebody when you cannot control what they do,” Leme said. “But he didn’t ride all his bulls and he had some trouble in some events, and that helped me.”

Standout Cowboy / Stock Contractor Bernis Johnson Passes Away Bernis Johnson, a seven-time qualifier for the National Finals Rodeo, and the owner of five-time Bareback Horse of the Year Sippin’ Velvet, passed away on Oct. 27 in Cleburne, Texas. He was 90. “My dad you could call him a farm boy, but my uncles and aunts would always say he was a cowboy from the beginning,” said David Johnson, Bernis’ son. “One of my uncles said one time when Bernis was a kid, anything with four legs he was always riding. It didn’t matter if it was horses, cows, or hogs. When my dad was riding there were no schools and you almost had to be self-taught. You were learning on the curve. He just had a natural ability (to ride) and he never had to think about it. He was just born to be a cowboy. It was something the Lord put in him that he didn’t have to try and be a cowboy. He just was a cowboy.” Johnson was born in Cleburne, Sept. 19, 1932, and at the age of 15, joined the Rodeo Cowboys Association. He was a three-event contestant competing in bull riding, bareback
riding, and saddle bronc riding. His tenacity in the arena allowed him to qualify for the NFR in 1959 (bareback riding), 1961(bull riding), 1962 (bareback riding, bull riding); 1963 (bareback riding), 1964 (bull riding) and 1966 (bareback riding). After enjoying a competitive career in ProRodeo as a contestant, Johnson started what would become a very successful venture as a stock contractor. He started the B-J Rodeo Company and in 1977 he purchased Hoss Inman’s Flying I Buck Stock Company and started introducing recognized roughstock to the sport of rodeo. Johnson’s most notable was B-J’s Sippin’ Velvet, sired by a direct descendant of Man-O-War. Sippin’ Velvet was a fivetime Bareback Horse of the Year in 1978, 1983-84, 1986-87. Sippin’ Velvet also was the top bareback horse of the NFR in 1978-79, 1982, 1986, and 1989. Sippin’ Velvet was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, Colo., in 2000. “Bernis’ track record speaks for itself with his ability to raise and train bucking horses and rodeo bulls, period,” said CK Reid, who was hired as a specialty act by Johnson when he was 15 and is a friend of the Johnson family. “Bernis had a God-given talent to be able to spot the right animal and train that animal. At one point, it is very safe to say Bernis had the most prolific set of bucking horses and bucking bulls in ProRodeo.” With the purchase of Hoss Inman’s Flying I Bucking Stock, Bernis also produced PRCA rodeos and was involved in the restoration of bringing the sport of rodeo back to the Fort Worth (Texas) Stockyards. “There was a period of time when my dad was transitioning from contesting to contracting,” David said. “He didn’t go from RCA cowboy to RCA contractor. He had to start with small college rodeos and open rodeos and begin to build up. Back in those days where we lived bulls were plentiful. We had an

arena down at our place and dad would buck and bring bulls up with potential and then he would take those bulls and trade them for bucking horses which were plentiful in the North. My dad was a trader, and he could spot good bulls and good horses. “There were people who were very, very kind to my dad in those early days like the Beutler brothers. Bernis was inducted into the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2005. “I see (ProRodeo Hall of Famer) Larry Mahan now and then I always tell him I’m David Johnson one of Bernis Johnson’s sons and I just want to say ‘Hi’ to you. He always says the same thing every time I have walked up to him the last four or five times. He said everybody walks up to me and says ‘Hey Mr. Mahan you were my hero growing up. Nobody ever asked who my hero was. He said my hero was Bernis Johnson. “Then there was another time with (the late) Harry Vold. Harry didn’t talk much but whatever he said spoke volumes. When I was talking to him in Cheyenne (Wyo.), he asked me how my dad was doing and he said, ‘Your dad was a Hell of a cowboy’.”
Johnson was preceded in death by his wife Frances. He is survived by sons, Bernie J., and David, and daughters, Lesa, and Donna. Services are pending. Article provided courtesy of PRCA.

Western Wanderings a cowboy’s fishin’ line and hook I took some time quite recently To set by the stream with a book As I sat there enjoying the sun and the breeze I sat back and took time to look
I flung baited hook in the water To wait for a tug on the stick It didn’t take long for a fish to bite I pulled him ashore right quick
This spot that I found was really nice I relaxed as I took in the scene And while I enjoyed this pure nature A fish jumped real high in the stream
I jumped to my feet and flipped him back That fish was a good sized bass I took off the hook and layed that fish out And fileted him there on the grass
I got up and went to my saddlebags To get fishin’ line and a hook And I cut me a branch off a big old tree I sure wanted some fish to cook!
Before very long, I was all fixed up With that bass roasting over a fire I read my book and ate my fish What more can a cowboy desire?
I took my knife and dug in the ground To find a nightcrawler or two I baited the hook and was ready To do what fishermen do
