Letter from the Editor

It seems like 2019 has been full of milestones for the Blake family. Stacie and I celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary back in January, I had my 50th birthday in July, and then this past month in August, we watched our first born daughter get married to the love of her life.

We should have planned better and spread some of these things out! We are thankful for our family and the blessings that we have been given. As they say, I didn’t lose a daughter but gained a son-in-law. Our PBR family has also celebrated some milestones, as well. J.B. Mauney made qualified ride #526 to become the second in all-time rides on the PBR premier series where he trails only Guilherme Marchi with 635 qualified rides. Silvano Alves also became only the seventh rider to reach 400 qualified rides in his illustrious career. Our hats are off to these men and their accomplishments. We hope you enjoy this issue of Humps N Horns! Until next time, Terry

Talking “Bull” with Brayden headed behind the chutes. Jay Rodrigue bucked off of Festus. Brock, my little brother, almost made the whistle on Vindicator but came up short. No worries though he will get the next one. I won the event, got a trophy and had a lot of fun. In the championship round, Mason Taylor had some hard luck on Concealed Carry. This bull bucks off a lot of great riders and he got the better of Mason. Joao Ricardo Vieira rode Bullseye for 89.50 points. Eduardo Aparecido rode Chiseled for 91.50 points. But Jose Vitor Leme rode Sun Country for 92.50 points to win the event. I’d like to say a huge thank you to Zimmerer Kubota for being a huge part of this event and the amazing shirts they let us ride in. Also to the Leals for bringing mini bulls for us. Hi my name is Brayden Hollywood Brown and I am a miniature bull rider. Today I’m going to talk about the Zimmerer Kubota PBR Challenge in Allen, Texas. So let’s get into it.

Thank you for reading. To find out more about me and see more pics from this event go check out my Facebook page @Brayden Hollywood Brown.

It happened to be Mr. Leal’s birthday, so before the event we picked up cupcakes. Before the event we sang him happy birthday and ate some cupcakes. He seemed to really appreciate it. Glad we could do something to give back to him.

Thank you, Brayden Hollywood Brown

After that it was time to ride bulls. In round one Eduardo Aparecido rode Harold’s Genuine Risk for 86 points. Alex Cardoza’s bull spun into his hand fast and hard kicking really high. He got it done on Bottles Up for 86.50 points. Taylor Toves rode Rocky for 84 points Allison De Sousa rode Wired Crazy for 83.50 points. Allison’s bull did not buck as hard as he would have hoped for but he got the job done. Ky Hamilton rode Yippy for 83.50 points. Eduardo De Oliveira rode Old Town Road for 84 points. This bull fit Eduardo real well and he rode him to the whistle. Jose Vitor Leme rode Highly Contagious 87.50 points, but the round winner was Denner Barbosa on Honey Man for 90 points. This bull was really bucking into his hand and not many people ride this bull but he got the job done. There weren’t enough qualified rides in the long go so they brought back two riders off of ground time. At half-time, Payton Pryor, Jay Rodrigue, my brother Brock, and I rode mini bulls. This was Brock’s debut to the PBR competition. First up Payton Pryor bucked off of Bones. Rookie of the year contender, Mason Taylor, pulled my bull rope and helped me get out on Hemi. I rode him for 86.50 points and got a little hung up on the dismount but Frank Newsom got me out. I had just talked to him before the show started so I said a quick hi to thank him and

Older Guys are Responsible to the Younger It’s up to us older guys to give into the future of the upcoming riders. Not a lot of them will allow us to give them what we know about bull riding and/or winning but the ones who do will have an advantage over the ones who think they know the best way. Let’s do our part. We can help the younger guys but we can’t start off by saying how much better we think we were than they are. We were not more talented than the young guys now we just were able to go through the process easier because there were no born to buck programs in every back yard in the country.

It’s a fight because a lot of the high ups think they know more than anyone else about things. Please help me change the mentality of these youth Bull Riding Associations to make the opportunity for success to flourish in our youth. This applies to every event in our great sport of Rodeo. Jesus Loves You! Cody Custer

These guys are put on rank bulls before they master the easier bulls. They need to experience success to go to greater levels of success. I love bucking bulls and how awesome the bulls are these days but hate that very few guys keep the kind that teach beginners to excel. I’ve started the work at the Jr High level to back off the bull power and let these kids have fun and develop naturally.

often go hand in hand. If you have pain, it can make it difficult to fall and stay asleep. But that’s not all. Poor sleep may also make the pain worse. Whether you have frequent back pain, muscle soreness, or arthritis, lack of sleep can increase your pain. According to the Institute for Chronic Pain, lack of sleep stresses the nervous system, which makes it more reactive. When the nervous system is more reactive, it can interpret pain signals differently. The pain might be amplified. Lack of sleep is also associated with flare-ups of chronic pain. In research published in The Journal of Pain, problems with sleep reliably predicted exacerbations of chronic pain and new incidents of pain. But lack of sleep or poor sleep may not only increase pain, it can also make it more difficult to deal with. When you don’t get enough sleep, it can make you more susceptible Getting enough sleep is vital for your overall health. Yet, to frustration and irritability. The bottom line is when we most of us fall short when it comes to getting enough are tired, we do not cope as well with problems, including shuteye. If you don’t get quality sleep, you’re not alone. pain. According to the National Sleep Foundation, about 35 5 Alternative Tips to Get Better Sleep percent of adults describe their sleep as fair or poor. Sleep can affect all areas of your health from your risk of disease to your mood. It can also play a role in chronic pain, including your level of pain and how well you cope. But if you have issues with pain, there are several things you can do to improve the quality of your sleep

The Effects of Lack of Sleep

Some people turn to sleep medications, including overthe-counter drugs or prescription meds to help them fall asleep. But sleep medications can have several side effects, which creates a new set of problems. Instead, consider the alternatives to sleep medications listed below to decrease pain and improve sleep.

#1) Use a topical melatonin lotion

Lack of sleep might include trouble falling or staying asleep, which decreases the total hours of rest you get. Whatever the sleep issue you have, it can have several effects on your health, including: • Memory problems • Trouble concentrating • Weight gain • Depression • Irritability

Using a pain relief lotion infused with topical melatonin is an excellent alternative to oral melatonin. Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone that regulates your sleep. But various factors affect how much melatonin you produce, which is why some people take it in supplement form. But using a pain relief lotion with topical melatonin can provide the benefits of pain relief and promote sleep possibly better than oral melatonin.

Research published in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics studied the use of topical melatonin to help shift workers and people with jet lag. The results Not only can sleep lead to the issues listed above, but it indicated that topical melatonin delivery might be more may also play a role in pain. Sleep problems and pain effective at promoting sleep than oral melatonin.

How Poor Sleep Increases Pain

#2) Stick to a consistent sleep/wake schedule It’s helpful to go to bed and wake up at about the same time each day to develop a natural rhythm. If you go to bed and wake up at different times each day, it interferes with your body’s ability to develop a sleep schedule. So, even if you want to sleep in, try to stick to the same schedule even on weekends.

#3) Reduce sleep stealers Several things you do every day could be affecting your sleep. Reducing sleep stealers can help you fall asleep easier. For example, cut caffeinated beverages several hours before bed. Put down your laptop or phone a few hours before you hit the sack. The light from the devices can make your brain think it is daytime and inhibit melatonin production. Also, don’t nap too long during the day, or you may find it difficult to fall asleep at night.

#4) Apply a topical pain relief lotion Another great option to decrease pain and promote sleep is a topical pain relief lotion with ingredients like menthol or arnica. A topical relief lotion will help reduce stiffness, pain, and inflammation without the side effects of pain medications. Decreased pain means you can get to sleep easier and won’t wake up groggy as you might from sleep

meds. Look for lotions that contain soothing ingredients, including capsicum, magnesium, glucosamine, and lavender.

#5) Make your bedroom sleep-friendly Creating the right environment promotes quality sleep. Most people sleep more sound in a dark and quiet room. Set a temperature that is comfortable for you. If you live near a busy street or in an apartment complex, consider buying a sound machine that blocks outside noises. Use blinds or black-out curtains to prevent the sun from peeking through early in the morning. By using the tips above, you can naturally decrease pain and increase sleep. Getting enough shuteye may reduce pain and improve your overall health. Real Time Pain Relief not only cares about the quality ingredients that go into each and every one of our products but also about the people who buy them. We hope this article becomes a valued resource for your own personal journey to better health. For over 20 years, Real Time Pain Relief has provided family safe pain relief made with Nature’s Ingredients. From the useful information in our articles to our high-quality products, we hope you feel better and pass it on!

Delete the Trash Excerpt from Kevin Cauley I have a program on my computer that does good work. I like it a lot, and it is helpful. However, this program also leaves behind some trash on my hard drive in the form of temporary files. Every so often, I must delete these temporary files so that they do not completely fill up my hard drive. If I forget to do this, then all the other programs on my computer will stop working. So, I invest the time to delete these files to ensure that my computer continues to run smoothly. Are you removing the trash or collecting it? Relationships are a lot like this. We value those with whom we have good relationships. We appreciate their friendship and all the good they do for us and for others. Sometimes, however, our friends may say or do something that leaves some “trash” behind. At this point, we have a choice. On the one hand, we can let that “trash” build over time until the relationship stops working. This may affect other relationships as well. On the other hand, we can delete the “trash” as it comes along. This keeps the relationship healthy. Paul wrote in Colossians 3:12-13, “Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.” The word for forgiveness in this verse means to act favorably toward another by letting go of one’s complaint; it doesn’t require another person to ask our forgiveness. By practicing forgiveness in our relationships, we can delete the “trash” so that it doesn’t become a big problem. When we don’t forgive one another, our relationships stop working, and this creates bigger problems. Let’s be forgiving people. If you’d like to visit more about this subject or any other biblical subject, the please, “...let us reason together...” (Isaiah 1:18) In His Love, Keno

Outside the Arena with...

Ann Hayes By Georgia Akers

Last month, I interviewed Dr. Anthony Alessi who has been retained by the Western Sports Foundation to assist riders who have suffered a head injury. This was part of the expansion of programs that changed Rider Relief charity to the Western Sports Foundation which is available to all athletes who participate in western sports. Along with hiring Dr. Alessi, Ann Hayes was also hired to assist riders with issues involving life styles and life crisis. So many of our riders go straight from high school to professional bull riding. They are young and many are ill prepared to deal with the media, fans and the enormous travel that is associated with the sport. This is where Ann comes in. She is available twenty-four hours a day for our riders. They have her phone number. Crisis does not always happen between the hours of 8-5. Please tell us about yourself. I was born and raised in Greenville, SC. I attended Mary Baldwin College in Staunton,VA. After college I was a police officer in Roanoke, VA. Later, I joined the DOJ and was a special agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration. In 1989, I left the DEA to start my own investigative business

in Manhattan, NY-Strang Hayes Consulting Investigative Management Group. I presently live in Bucks County, PA with my husband. We have 3 stepdaughters and 2 sons...5 grandchildren, lots of animals and flowers. Your company Investigative Management Group is a high end security/investigative firm. How did you transform into crisis management? The business began with a focus on high end corporate investigations. We assisted clients with multiple employee issues: substance abuse, sexual harassment, preventing violence in the workplace for example. We have worked with many types of businesses and sports teams. We have assisted college athletics, the NFL and MLB teams with policies and procedures that help prevent problems within their organizations. You have been hired as a crisis manager by the Western Sports Foundation. Please tell us what a crisis manager does. The main job as a crisis manager is to educate and train employees and athletes so there is no crisis but when a problem arises, handle it with the athlete or employee until it is resolved. It can be a personal problem such as substance abuse, or death in the family or some other emotional crisis that immediate assistance is needed for that person to continue to perform their best.

Ann Hayes with her husband, Tom, and their two sons, Weston (left) and Sam (right).

How did you get involved with the athletes of western sports? Dr. Tony Alessi (see last month’s interview with Dr. Alessi) and I have worked together with an MLB team for many years and he felt like I could help with the Western Sports Foundation in assisting and structuring an overall program for the western sports athletes. How do they differ from the other athletes that you have served? Athletes are similar in many ways. They want to win, they are competitive, they try to stay in good shape and want to make money. There are a few obvious differences in the western sports athletes and football or baseball players. With the bull riders, if you don’t ride you don’t get paid. Many professional athletes have been groomed by the high school and college programs which may have included life skills that the western sports athlete does not receive. While western sports has become increasingly popular, they still aren’t supported by the majority of schools as other sports. It is not a team sport and does not get the funding or endowments that the other sports receive. What are the main areas of crisis that you have encountered with western athletes? Does it differ from other professional athletes? Western Sports athletes have many of the same problems as other athletes such as: dealing with injuries, excessive travel away from home, keeping their relationships healthy while on the road, getting adequate sleep and eating right, depression and loneliness, substance abuse (alcohol) and money issues. You have mentioned that other professional athletes are more prepared/groomed for their role. Why is this different from western athletes? As I mentioned before, I think the athletes are more the same than they are different but because the western athletes are not as supported in high schools and colleges, it makes

a difference. Western athletes have amazing mentors, but an organization like the Western Sports Foundation can fill in that gap. That is definitely the goal of the Western Sorts Foundation and its donors. It is there not only to help the athlete but also the parents and spouses of the athlete. What could be done to better prepare them for being a professional athlete? My goal is the inform the athlete about the programs available to them but also to educate the athlete about certain issues BEFORE they become problems! Because of the Western Sports Foundation, we have had education training at many events over the past 2 years and just completed a three-day training event in Pueblo. We had over 17 riders and it was amazing.

Humps-Horns.com · 17 · September 2019

You have mentioned that three main areas of crisis are drugs, domestic issues and the groupies also known in the western sports as buckle bunnies. In each of these areas, how do you assist the riders? The athletes need to be educated and informed about the many things that can stunt or even end their careers. Incidents OTHER than injuries. For example: Substance Abuse. Some of the riders I have been asked to help use alcohol or marijuana (where it is legal) on a regular basis. This must be discussed. The athletes need to understand how the uses of these substances can possibly make things worse AND if they feel like they have an issue with a substance, the Western Sports Foundation is there to guide and get them help.

How receptive have the athletes been to you and the services you offer? The athletes have been very receptive to my help so far. It sometimes takes time to get a program like this off the ground. It is a trust building relationship. I am so pleased with the progress so far. The riders that I have spoken to have been so polite and seemed to really appreciate the interest and help that the Western Sports Foundation offers. What can be done to prevent these issues for our riders? Education, Education, Education. Photos provided courtesy of Ann Hayes.

Domestic Problems. It is always hard to maintain healthy relationships when you travel as an athlete. Every athlete needs help to develop skills that maintain a healthy connection with their spouse and children. Offering counseling assistance to the athlete and his spouse is imperative. Educating him about the importance of counseling can be challenging but super important. Also training the athlete about the pitfalls of the #MeToo movement and everything that can go along with it is a must. I spent time in Pueblo talking to the riders about how NOT to open themselves up to possible legal consequences in today’s uncertain atmosphere where young women are concerned. We also discussed the dangers that could be associated with groupies or buckle bunnies. The last thing any athlete needs is to be accused of taking advantage of a girl in any situation. (note: a few years ago, a rider was signing autographs at the Western Sports Foundation table: when he left, I found 6-8 cards from women with their phone number on them or hotel room!! He left all of them there. I felt old and from a different generation.) Social Media. One of the best things to happen to sports and athletes is social media. It gets you close to your audience and fans and increases popularity. On the other hand, it is one of the worst things to happen because you never know who is videoing the athlete and it opens up a lot of areas for problems. We have spent a lot of time educating them about this too. Ann Hayes with her granddaughter, Fiona, at her farm.

By Kelly B. Robbins

Bull riding has been called the “toughest sport on dirt”. It is alive and well all-across this great nation. Bull riding fans know there is just something special about watching these amazing, tough cowboy athletes climb on the back of these amazing, tough bovine athletes and battle to the buzzer. The sport of bull riding continues to draw fans from all walks of life and events are taking place from New York City to Los Angeles, and everywhere in between. Bull riding has reached this level because over the years, a few visionary cowboys have been willing to sacrifice and take a risk to make something better, something bigger and something more enduring. The various bull riding Halls of Fame are full of men and women who have recognized a need for change, stepped out and changed the world of bull riding for the better. Kyle Lippincott, Cheyenne Owens, and Jimmy Roth are just such men of vision. They saw a need to create a venue where every stock contractor can enter his young bucking bulls in an event and have the opportunity to win some money and a buckle. Evolution Bull Competitions was the result of many conversations between Kyle and Cheyenne about how tough it was for the average stock contractor to win or place at a traditional type competition with their yearling or two-year-old bulls. “Folks complain,” Kyle said, “but they don’t do anything about it.” Kyle Lippincott with his wife, Molly.

Humps-Horns.com · 20 · September 2019

Cheyenne Owens with his wife, Tara, and their three children, Marshall, Josie, and Lexi.

“In 2018, there were 7,489 recorded competition bull riding outs,” Kyle said. “The average bull score was 80.8. That’s where many contractors are with their bulls. But a bull that scores 81 points has no chance to win an ABBI type competition. We wanted to do our part to give everybody a chance to win some money. Cheyenne and I kicked it around and decided to do it. We approached Jimmy Roth of Big Rafter Rodeo and he provided the place. It just took off from there.” “This is extremely new, and it has been quite a struggle,” Kyle continued. “People just don’t like change. But Evolution Bull Competitions gives hope to the smaller contracting outfits that are giving up and selling out because they can’t make any money. This even gives folks that have regular jobs a chance to own a bucking bull and compete for money. But even big stock contractors can enter and win with their lesser bucking bulls. In a nutshell, everyone has a chance to win.” The Evolution Bull Competitions events are cosanctioned with ABBI. Money won at these events counts towards the ABBI totals. I asked Kyle to explain how the 4-D system works. “Evolution Bull Competitions is a fraternity system,” he shared. “It is a series of events based on the 4-D class system for payouts, similar to rodeo barrel racing. There is a $400.00 entry fee, which the common working man can afford. All the yearling bulls buck together in one big group. All the twoyear-old bulls buck together in one big group. After the bulls have all bucked, the highest scoring bull is the 1-D champion. His score determines the payout for the rest.”

“There is a total maximum of 20 holes paid,” Kyle went on to further explain. “For example, if there are 100 yearling bulls bucking, the payout would be determined by the highest scoring bull. If the 1-D champion bull scored 90 points, he would earn top money. The 1-D pot is 35% of the total purse. Then money would be paid to the next four highest scoring bulls. For 2-D, you would drop down 3 points to 87. The 2-D pot is 30% of the total purse. The bull that scored 87 points would be the 2-D champion. Then money would be paid to the next four highest scoring bulls under 87 points. For 3-D, you would drop down 3 more points to 84. The 3-D pot is 20% of the total purse. The bull that scored 84 points would be the 3-D champion. Then money would be paid to the next four highest scoring bulls under 84 points. For 4-D, you would drop down 3 points to 81. The 4-D pot is 15% of the total purse. The bull that scored 81 points would be the 4-D champion. Then money would be paid to the next four highest scoring bulls under 81 points.”

Humps-Horns.com · 21 · September 2019

“4-D has never been done before in the bull business,” Kyle stated. “When you have 150 to 200 entries, that pot is pretty big. The D-system gives the average contractor a chance to win money and a buckle, where otherwise they would have no chance.” Kyle grew up rodeoing and was a professional bull fighter for 10 years. He lives on his ranch in Prague, Oklahoma with his wife, Molly and two children. He owns Rafter KL Bucking Bulls and raises bucking bulls. Cheyenne Owens owns CO Cattle in Tecumseh, Oklahoma and lives there with his wife, Tara and his three children. He also owns MJO Fabrication, a welding shop. He runs over 500 head of cows and has a pretty big outfit. Kyle managed the ranch for him for a while. Jimmy Roth is a businessman who lives in Kentucky. He bought a ranch in Vinita, Oklahoma and has come on board with the 4-D concept and has partnered with Kyle and Cheyenne to hold the Evolution Bull Competitions at the arena on his ranch. He owns Big Rafter Rodeo.

“Jeff Lee asked me to produce an event at Jimmy’s place,” Kyle divulged. “Cheyenne and I talked it over and thought this would be perfect for a 4-D event. After that first event, Jimmy was inspired and saw the big picture. He jumped on board with us.” “We try to hold one event each month,” Kyle concluded. “Our next event will be in Vinita at Jimmy’s place on September 28, 2019. People that win at a 4-D competition would probably not win at an ABBI competition. Our main purpose in starting Evolution Bull Competitions was for those people. It keeps them excited about the bucking bull business and building a bucking bull herd.”

Taylor Toves Has Learned How to Play the Waiting Game By Barbara Pinnella

Twenty-six-year-old Taylor Toves began his PBR bull riding career when he turned 18. He went to those events that entire first year, but was disappointed with how that year went. He had some friends who were going to the CBR, and he joined up with them for a couple of years. Sometimes you just have to wait until the time is right. “I went back to the PBR in 2015, I believe,” he told Humps N Horns. “Then I broke my leg in 2016 and I was out for pretty

much the whole year. In 2017 I actually got to go full time again to the PBR events that year.” Before his mom and dad got married, Toves’ father Tony rode bulls at open rodeos, and Taylor used that reasoning to talk his mom into letting him ride – not an easy task. Taylor was exposed to other aspects of rodeo when he was younger. “We grew up riding horses and team roping. My dad was team roping a lot when we were growing up, so we kind of did that in the beginning. But I always knew I wanted to ride bulls. I guess I saw it on TV one time when I was little and from then on it was just all I wanted to do.” Even though Taylor has been competing professionally for several years now, he finds himself on the PBR’s Rookie of the Year list. We wondered if that seemed strange to him. “A little bit. Everything is starting to fall into place this year. It’s definitely not the way I had it planned growing up. I mean, I wanted to be that kid who was 18 years old and doing really good. But it just didn’t work out like that, so I just kept my head down and kept going. I guess you might say I’m one of the older ones in the rookie class, but it’s actually the first time I’m seeded on tour, so it’s still my rookie year.” Toves does have traveling partners he goes up and down the road with, and they are a bit different depending on whether they are headed for the Unleash The Beast tour or the Velocity tour.

“For the big tour it is usually me, and Mason Taylor, and Keyshawn Whitehorse. Well, Keyshawn moved back to Utah, so we don’t actually travel together anymore, but when we go to an event, we usually all stay together. “For the Velocity Tour,” he continued, “there’s a whole group of us. There’s me, Ricky Aguiar, Tye Chandler, Bryan Titman, and then Mason and Keyshawn, and our buddy Paul Knight’s been going with us a bunch. “So there’s a whole group of us that go to that tour when we get the chance to go to those. It makes it so much better. Everybody can feed off of each other and encourage each other. It helps to be around guys that are actually your friends that you do other stuff with.” Like many others before him, Toves said that the bull he would like to get on before he is retired is Bruiser. He feels that the bull would fit him. “I feel that bull fits most people. A lot of guys can get along with him. If you ride bulls correctly, you can get along with him. He bucks really hard but there’s no tricks to him. He just bails in the air and kicks over his head every time, and turns back both ways.

“You dang sure don’t want to get out of time with him or get in the wrong spot, but if you ride that bull right a lot of guys can get along with him and ride him.” When Taylor is not riding bulls, he is content to hang around the house and visit with friends from high school that don’t rodeo. He also likes to fish, and tries to do that as well. “Since we don’t get to stay home much, when I am home I just relax around the house. Actually, I fish quite a bit. That’s what I’ve been doing a lot of the last couple of years.” As of this writing, Toves is within the top 35 to qualify for the PBR World Finals. This would not be his first trip, as he won second in the Velocity Finals in 2017 and got the invitation to go. “That was fine, and the Velocity Finals is a really good deal, but this year will be the first year I could actually qualify for the World Finals.” And staying with the Vegas theme, that Vegas venue is his favorite.

Humps-Horns.com · 25 · September 2019

“I have to say because of going to the Finals, that’s my favorite venue, just because it’s such a big deal, especially since I got to go in 2017. I got to see what it was like, and it’s just what you dream of at this level. It’s just always what you’ve wanted to do and where you’ve wanted to be. So, there’s nothing else like that place, that’s for sure!” Currently, and as of this writing, Toves is sitting 27th in the world standings. With 11 more events to go, he is on track for his quest to qualify for the Finals this year. Now that he is on the tour, the PBR is where Taylor wants to stay. He believes this is the big show which pits him against the best bulls and best cowboys. For him, it doesn’t get any better than that. Humps N Horns Bull Riding Magazine wishes him continued good luck on his journey.

Dr. J. Pat Evans Co-founder of Justin Sportsmedicine Passes Away by Tracy Renck, PRCA Media Coordinator

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The rodeo and sports world lost a legend and pioneer in Dr. J. Pat Evans. Evans, one of the founders of the Justin Sportsmedicine Program, who was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2004, passed away July 22. He was 88. Evans is survived by sons Kirk and Mike. A celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. J. Pat Evans [took] place Aug. 11 at 2 p.m. (CT) at the River Ranch Stockyards at 500 NE 23rd Street, in Fort Worth, Texas. The Justin Sportsmedicine Program was initiated at the 1980 National Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City, and Evans, along with Don Andrews, was a driving force in making that happen. Before Evans envisioned the Justin Sportsmedicine Program and worked to get it started, there was nothing organized for providing medical care to rodeo athletes. In 1981, the Justin Boots Company became the only sponsor the program has known in its years of service. “Justin Sportsmedicine was my dream,” Evans told 1978 PRCA World Champion Bull Rider Butch Kirby one time in conversation. “He was like a father to all of us,” Kirby said. “Cowboys used to go to Forest Lane in Dallas to see Dr. J. Pat so they could get fixed up. When he fixed cowboys and we won, he won also.” ProRodeo Hall of Fame bull rider Donnie Gay knows Evans is irreplaceable. “The world is a better place because he was here,” Gay said. Rick Foster, who is the program director for the Justin Sportsmedicine team, was glad to have known Evans.

“He was a mentor for all of us and a great educator of rodeo sports medicine, and the best professional friend anyone could have,” Foster said. And, Evans loved treating cowboys. “The cowboys are the toughest guys on the planet,” Evans said before his passing through Dee Chambless, a family friend. The reach of Evans’ influence in sports medicine is far and wide, and especially on Dr. Tandy Freeman, the Medical Director of the Justin Sportsmedicine team. “To begin with, he (J. Pat) was one of my mentors,” Freeman said. “He is one of the people who has had a profound impact on my life. I wouldn’t be where I am, doing what I’m doing, if it hadn’t been for J. Pat. When I first met Dr. Evans, I was a resident in training, I hadn’t decided what I wanted to do. I was doing an orthopedic surgery residency, but I hadn’t decided what area I wanted to focus my attention on whether it was going to be sports medicine, double-joint replacement or something else. “The thing about J. Pat that was the most influential on me was witnessing the relationships he had with his patients. How he talked to them and took care of them. It was a really personal form of medicine, nowadays it would be considered old-fashioned. He helped me determine how I wanted to go about dealing with patients and taking care of patients.” Then, Freeman made the choice to practice what Evans did. “I decided I wanted to do sports medicine, and then one day he called me up and said he was getting ready to retire and wanted to know if I was interested in taking care of his old patients,” Freeman said. “That had huge implications because he was really talking about the rodeo athletes he had taken care of over the years. Long before that, even while I was still a resident, we got to be friends, and he’s somebody that I love

and care about. He was a role model not just for me, but lots of people. The Justin Sportsmedicine torch is still his, I’m just holding it to pass it on to the next person. J. Pat was the medical director emeritus. As long as he was able to do it, he was still the guy whose opinion counted the most.”

and the care they needed.”

In addition to rodeo athletes, Evans was one of the team doctors for the Dallas Cowboys from 1970-89 and a team doctor for the Dallas Mavericks from 1980-92.

“He was one of the pioneers in terms of developing sports medicine as an area of specialization,” Freeman said. “Focusing on athletes and athletic people and approaching their care from the standpoint of getting them back to their athletic activities. His impact is more than just in the rodeo world. I met J. Pat when I was a resident in training, and I can tell you there are a couple hundred or more guys who are practicing orthopedic surgery today who J. Pat influenced.”

Evans also was responsible for suggesting and promoting the development of the Tom Landry Sports Medicine and Research Center, which opened in 1990 in Dallas. Even today, it is one of the best sports medicine facilities in the world. “He had a lot of famous athletes that he took care of and was friends with,” Freeman said. “With the (Dallas) Cowboys there are guys he took care of who were arguably among the best ever that played the game and yet, he cared for the broken-down, weekend circuit cowboys just the same as he would for a guy who was a hall of famer in the NFL. To him, there was no difference in terms of the attention that they got

Evans is believed to be one of the first people in Dallas to develop a sports medicine practice. His practice was called Sports Medicine Clinic of North Texas.

It was through his work with the Dallas Cowboys that Evans was introduced to the world of rodeo through Cowboys running back Walt Garrison, who also competed on the rodeo trail in the offseason. Garrison was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2018. “The first rodeo cowboy I think he (J. Pat) operated on was

my brother (bull rider) Pete (Gay) in 1974,” Donnie Gay said. “Pete tore his knee up, and my dad (Neal) was trying to find a good surgeon. He talked to Walt (Garrison) and he got J. Pat to look at him, and it started a good friendship. He was a great friend and a great man. J. Pat liked the mentality of the cowboys, and he saw that we didn’t mind paying for it as long as we were going to get what we were paying for. Finally, we had a surgeon catering to cowboys who knew what he was doing.” Donnie Gay, an eight-time PRCA world champion, said Evans operated on him four times. “The cowboys of today are reaping the benefits that J. Pat started,” Donnie Gay said. “The first Justin treatment room was the bull riders’ locker room at the 1976 NFR in Oklahoma City. Don (Andrews) was there with a bag of tape and Dr. Evans had medicine and they set up shop. Everybody was making fun of us being little sissy bull riders having to bring their team to the rodeo until Roy Duvall, the big steer wrestler, tore his knee up the first night and he was in the locker room after the rodeo that night. Dr. Evans worked his magic on his knee and he won the go-round the next night. “By the fourth performance, the bull riders couldn’t hardly get in their own locker room. It morphed from there, and the

PRCA and Justin brands hit a home run on that one (forming the Justin Sportsmedicine team). It was a great fit and it still is.” Joe Beaver, a three-time PRCA All-Around World Champion and five-time Tie-down Roping World Champion, appreciated Dr. Evans. “He was a rough, gruff, tough doctor, but he was very caring and very sincere,” said Beaver, who was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2000. “He started something that has really been a benefit to the rodeo world and the cowboy individual.” Tom Feller, the director of event marketing for Justin Brands, agreed with Beaver. “Because of him they introduced what is arguably the greatest program to ever hit the sport (of rodeo),” Feller said. “I have had my (PRCA) card since 1974, so I rodeoed before it (Justin Sportsmedicine) came along and after, and there’s no question there’s no greater program that touched the sport and had a great impact on the individuals in the sport.” Article and photo provided courtesy of ProRodeo Sports News.

Western Wanderings the best ride With hat jammed tight down on his head His will and his senses collide He nods to the gate man and hangs on tight This cowboy is ready to ride

But this cowboy has a goal of his own He has just one thing to prove He’ll ride this fur storm to the buzzer And he counters the bull’s every move

The gate opens wide and the bull makes his move And jumps nearly ten feet broadside His body is almost vertical As cowboy’s head meets bull’s backside

The seconds tick by as the crowd holds its breath Cowboy and bull now at war When the buzzer sounds, he’s still hangin’ on And the crowd begins to roar

Hind legs hit the ground with a jarring jolt The cowboy is thrown to the right It looks like he’s going to lose his seat But he’s not yet done for this night

He lets go the rope and takes hat in hand And slaps that old bull on the horn Then jumps to the ground and waves to the crowd Who’ve witnessed a legend just born

The rider senses the beast’s next move He’s sure on his game tonight He turns and shifts his weight just in time And now they’re in for a fight

As this cowboy grins and pumps his fist He realizes deep down inside With a winning score of ninety-four He’s just made his very best ride

Froth flying in every direction That bull spins and bucks with great flare He twists, and he turns with one goal in mind To make this man fly through the air
