Letter from the Editor

The second half of the PBR season has kicked off with a bang. I believe this will be one of the best races for the world championship that we have seen in quite some time. Cooper Davis, Kaique Pacheco, J.B. Mauney, and a host of others have a legitimate shot at the title for 2016. The list of contenders includes some young guns as well as some of the veteran hands. This should make it a great run for us as fans leading up to the PBR World Finals in Las Vegas. A lot of bull riding associations will be finishing their seasons with their finals over the next few weeks so I would really encourage you to check the Where’s the Beef section to find some of these great bull riders and help support them as they chase their dreams.

Riley’s Roundup

Hello all you bull riding fans, Well the second half of the season has kicked off with a bang.....can you say Cooper Davis, this guy is pretty handy!! Some others that are making some noise Jess Lockwood, Kaique Pacheco, Eduardo Aparecido and how about that huge win of Guilherme Marchi. Have you noticed all the new rank bulls? I think the next couple years are going to be something to watch as these bulls get older and smarter!! How many of you are going to Vegas for the World Finals?? I will be there Friday, Saturday and Sunday.....grandpa will be there the entire week but I’m in 7th grade now so school is a little tougher so I had to cut back....I am bringing my grandma with me, she has never been to a PBR event and never been to Las Vegas!!!! Let the fun begin!!! Ok this months pictures has a story behind them. The bull rider with the little kid is Rubens Barbosa...the picture was taken by Grandpa (he is the one that told me what happened in Nashville and when he told me he got watery eyes, must be the old age!! j/k Gramps). The other picture is of a lil guy in a wheelchair, whom was the winner of the Rider Relief Hat that we give out at the events we attend. He was given the hat before Rubens got to the booth and grandpa told him about the lil guy. Rubens, on his own, asked if grandpa knew where the lil guy was sitting. Grandpa said “No, but I can find him” and he did....so after Rubens spent his time at the RRF booth grandpa took him to see the little guy. Grandpa said it was the little boy, his mom and dad, and brother and sister. He said Rubens got down on his knees to talk to the lil guy, signed his hat, gave him an autographed picture and had numerous pictures taken with him. Keep in mind he did this because he wanted to, he didn’t have to....Grandpa said the whole family pretty much lost it......

You all know by now I love bull riding, I love helping with RRF, I love the people you meet and I love Flint......but it does not get any better than this!!! Grandpa told me Rubens Barbosa is his new favorite bull rider! Got to go, hope this story made you smile......my friends, there is good in this world.... Love you all Riley

literature describing massage techniques that date back more than 2,000 years. In modern times, we have a number of different types of massage that a person can use for pain management, and there are even mechanical devices that can be used to assist the process. While there are different types of massage, they all work by manipulating the soft tissue. This can relieve pain by improving blood circulation to the affected area and it can also help to relieve tension. While there are limitations on the abilities of researchers to effectively study and evaluate the effectiveness of massage for pain relief, much of the research has been positive. A 2010 study from the International Journal of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork found that patients experienced a significant reduction in pain levels following a massage, and a review from Evidence-based Complementary Medicine found that there was good support for massage therapy as a means to treat lowerback pain.

10 Natural Ways to Relieve Chronic Pain

Pain management is one of the biggest issues in modern healthcare. According to analysis from the National Institutes of Health, more than 25 million American adults suffer from chronic pain and close to 40 million experience severe levels of pain. Further, pain is the most common reason that people seek healthcare and it is one of the top causes of disability. With numbers like these, it is no wonder that so many people are seeking new and different ways to address pain management issues. Severe or chronic pain can have a dramatic impact on the life of the individual, and if the pain causes some level of disability, it can affect the lives of those around them. Unfortunately, many people will turn to pain relief strategies that rely on drugs or they might be recommended surgery. While in some cases, things like drugs and surgery might be necessary, they both come with their own problems. People can become dependent upon pain medications, and surgery is often recommended when there are other strategies that could be applied. As an alternative, there are various natural pain management strategies that could work to provide relief. By employing some of these methods and remedies, the person can learn to control their pain without having to use medication, and it could help them to avoid or delay surgical intervention. Massage Most people would agree that a massage feels good and that it can be great for relaxation. For a pain relief strategy, massage can be one of the most effective tools. Massage is actually one of the oldest practices used in the world of pain management, with

Controlled Breathing Breathing is a simple function of the human body, and many people do not realize that it can be used to control pain. In some situations, you may notice that in moments of pain your breathing becomes rapid. While this is the natural response to severe pain, it can actually inhibit your body’s ability to manage it. Deep breathing that is slow and measured can be a way to help the body deal with pain. This is especially true of breathing exercises that are associated with relaxation techniques. As the person takes these slow, measured breaths, the body relaxes and the mind gains more ability to deal with the pain. A 2012 study from Pain Medicine found that deep, slow breathing could have an effect on the perception of pain. In the study, researchers noted that there was a significant increase in participant’s pain threshold associated with relaxing deep breathing, and they concluded that the practice does have an effect on the way that the mind processes pain. Herbal Remedies If you are looking to avoid the use of medication for pain management, there are a number of herbal and natural remedies that can be effective. Some will work better for different conditions, and people will experience different results. However, if you do know the source of your pain, these remedies are safe and easy to try. For joint and back pain, turmeric can be good for reducing inflammation and

relieving pain. You could also try Glucosamine and Chondroitin. Omega 3 fatty acids can also work well for joint pain. Cloves and clove oil have also been noted for their pain relieving properties. Not to mention, Aloe Vera, Capsicum, Menthol, Arnica, Emu Oil, Willow Bark, and so many more.

of acupuncture, there are different points that can be stimulated to provide different responses. Adherents to acupuncture may claim that it can be used to treat a number of conditions, but the best evidence suggests that it is primarily useful as a pain management technique.

For most people, they will not get all of the pain relief that they need from herbal remedies or supplements. Many of these substances can be good to provide minor pain relief and to help control inflammation. When used in conjunction with a broader pain management strategy, natural and herbal remedies can be effective.

When an acupuncturist inserts the needle at the different acupoints, it stimulates a pain response in the area. This causes the body to respond by releasing chemicals that can promote healing and pain relief. As a form of complementary medicine, acupuncture can work well to relieve pain and it can also help to reduce stress and tension.

Many people have found relief from topical pain relieving lotions that combine numerous different herbal ingredients.

Generally, acupuncture will provide the best results when it is used in conjunction with other methods for pain management. Acupuncture works well as a complement to things like massage, electrical stimulation therapy, topical treatments, heat and cold therapy and exercise.

Exercise Exercise is good for your health in a number of ways, and it can be used as an effective method for controlling pain. All it takes is some gentle exercise to get the body moving, and the individual will experience less pain over time. In a direct way, the activity of exercise can reduce pain. When you exercise, endorphins are released in the brain. These chemicals can work to enhance your mood, and they can also work to block the pain signals. In addition to the effect of endorphins, exercise can help the individual to manage pain because it will increase the fitness of the body. Many problems with pain are the result of weakness in certain parts of the body or a lack of flexibility. If you can work to restore strength and flexibility, it will reduce the pain. For some people, their ability to exercise may be limited. If all you can do is some gentle exercise or even take a walk, this will help. If you need help with an exercise routine that is designed for your pain management needs, you should consult with a doctor or a physical therapy professional. Acupuncture In traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture was believed to provide healing by restoring balance to the body. In the modern day, there is a more scientific understanding of how it works, and it has been shown to be a valuable tool for those that are suffering from pain. With acupuncture, the specialist will insert thin needles under the skin. In the practice

Nutritious Diet Your diet is important to your health in a number of ways. A good diet will aid digestive health, regulate blood sugar levels, and ensure a healthy immune system. In addition to this, a healthy diet can be one of the most important elements in relieving problems that are associated with chronic pain. To start, you just want to make sure to have a wellbalanced diet that is rich in all of the nutrients that you need. Even without focusing on foods that can be good for pain relief, a balanced diet will set the foundation for living a healthy life that is not plagued by the issues of pain. If you are looking to introduce foods that will help you to manage pain, then you are mostly looking at foods that have anti-inflammatory properties. Ginger can be great for reducing inflammation and fighting pain. Try fish like sardines and salmon to get more omega 3 fatty acids. Soy is another option for introducing fatty acids to the diet. Hot peppers have also been shown to have properties that can assist in pain relief. In addition to a balanced diet and consuming plenty of foods that promote pain relief, you also need to make sure to drink enough water. When the body is dehydrated, it does not respond to pain as well as it should. Additionally, many of the natural pain management strategies will work better if the body is well hydrated. Heat and Cold Therapy Some of the simplest pain relief strategies can involve different temperature applications. The use of heat and cold can be effective for reducing issues that are associated with chronic pain, and it is something that you can do on your own.

Humps-Horns.com ¡ 11 ¡ October 2016

Using an ice pack can be a great way to deal with an injury. The ice has a numbing effect on the region to which it is applied and it can also help to combat the effects of inflammation. On the other side, heat can be used to provide relief for muscle pain and spasms. The heat has a soothing effect and it can promote better blood flow to the area. Heat and cold can also be used to complement different pain management strategies. If you are using exercise or physical therapy, you can use ice to control inflammation or heat to help the muscles relax after activity. For some pain issues, it can even be effective to alternate between heat and cold therapy. Find Support It is no secret that people draw strength and rely on others for support. Being a part of a community and having people to share your story with is an important part of the human experience. And this is especially true for those who are dealing with chronic pain.

are a number of techniques that you can use for relaxation that will reduce stress and limit its impact on your health. Deep controlled breathing can be great for relieving stress and helping the individual to relax. Using breathing exercises that come with practices like meditation and yoga have been shown to work wonders for stress relief. As an additional stress management strategy, you could make a conscious effort to control the narrative that you set for life. People often look at the ways that pain and stress have impacted their life, and they set a narrative that makes them feel as though things are out of control. Instead, encourage yourself that you can manage everything that life gives you. A positive outlook can go a long way when it comes to reducing your stress levels. Sleep One of the biggest problems for people who suffer with chronic pain is the way that it affects their sleep. For many people who have issues with pain, they look at bedtime with a sense of dread. It is often at night, when you are trying to sleep, that the problem is at its worst.

Your first choice for support will more than likely be friends and family members. These are the people that are close to you, and they will often be the most effective support network that you can find.

Sleep and pain interact in a complex way for these individuals. The pain makes it so that they cannot sleep, and the sleep deprivation increases their problems with pain. Essentially, it is a cycle of chronic pain that increases as you lose sleep, and nights become ever more sleepless as your pain increases. Even with this issue, you need to try to stick to a normal sleeping schedule. The only way to break the cycle is to restore proper sleeping habits. To restore better sleeping habits, you should avoid taking naps and continue going to bed at the same time every night.

While the people close to you can provide support, they might not always be able to relate, and they might not understand the issues that come with chronic pain. For this, you could turn to a support group for people with chronic pain. Having a group of people that know what you are going through can be a great way to help you through some of the toughest issues that come with chronic pain. In addition to meeting support groups in person, you can also call support hotlines that are for people with chronic pain. You will find that there are phone numbers and online communities for people who are suffering from all sorts of pain issues. The support and advice that you can receive from these groups can be invaluable when it comes to coping with life as a sufferer of chronic pain. Reduce Stress Elevated stress levels are the enemy of good health in a number of ways. In managing your chronic pain, one of the things that you will need to be aware of is the fact that your emotional state can have an effect on your body’s ability to deal with the pain.

Further, some of the natural pain relief strategies can also assist with better sleeping habits. Studies have noted that massage and acupuncture can improve sleeping habits. Regular exercise can also help to burn energy that may be keeping you up at night. Also, look for a topical pain reliever or herbal remedy that can help you relax and ease muscle tension and aches. Published by Real Time Pain Relief.

By making an effort to reduce the stress factors in your life, you can help to make the pain more bearable. Moreover, there

Just suppose the Lord should have every covetous man stoned as He did Achan? Just suppose the Lord should strike dead all who lied about their giving as he did Ananias and Sapphira? Just suppose the Lord should let some parents look into the future and see where their example and lack of control led their children?

What’s Your Excuse? Accidents are not funny, but these excuses are. Remember when the daughter or son, or even perhaps a wife or husband, came in with an excuse for what caused the accident in which they had just been involved. Here we have some of these excuses, which range from ridiculous to sublime. Along comes an enterprising reporter who combed the police records and quoted verbatim the actual descriptions of the cause of accidents as given in their own words by the drivers. (Daily Press, June 12, Artesia, New Mexico)

Or, just suppose that all Christians really live consistently and prove by their lives that they really love the Lord? Now, just suppose that this is the day that you have decided to give your life unto the Lord; but suppose you don’t quite understand God’s Word. Then please come and let us reason together the word of our Lord. In His Love, Keno

Woman Driver: “Coming home, I drove into the wrong house and collided with a tree I don’t have.” Male Driver: “The other car collided with mine without giving warning of its intentions.” Woman Driver: “I collided with a stationary truck coming the other way.” Male Driver: “I pulled away from the side of the road, glanced at my mother-in-law and headed over the embankment.” Woman Driver: “I was sure the old fellow would never make it to the other side of the roadway when I struck him.” Man Driver: “I had been driving my car for 40 years when I fell asleep at the wheel and had the accident.” Woman Driver: “To avoid hitting the bumper of the car in front, I struck the pedestrian.” Male Driver: “The invisible car came out of nowhere, struck my vehicle and vanished.” Or like the lady that was driving 70 mph in very dense fog, when asked why, replied, “I wanted to hurry and get out of this fog.” If you think those are funny, you ought to hear some of the excuses given for not attending Bible study class or worship. Cowboy Up!

by Jill vanEgmond

During an election year when the pendulum swing is both far to the left and right, why can’t we return to living like the early cowboys? We have Donald Trump playing to the extreme conservatives and Hillary Clinton playing to the extreme liberals. Black Lives Matter is crying inequality and ISIS is enlisting young men and women to attack our country, our values. Why can’t we live by the Code of the West? When cowboys used to ride the range there was no written law to live by. In the absence of law, there was necessity to create an unwritten rule to govern behavior, conduct and how to live respectfully among others; thus the code of the west was developed. “A man’s got to have a code, a creed to live by, no matter his job,” John Wayne was quoted as saying. Cowboys were bound by unwritten rules that centered on hospitality, fair play, loyalty and respect. What is a cowboy? John Wayne also said cowboys are, “simple direct men who believe in things like liberty.” Cowboys represent courage and hard work. The lone cowboy is a myth. Cowboys rode the range in a community. Work driving cattle was very difficult often spending fifteen hours in the saddle each day during their drives. Many men were needed to ensure the days were completed with as much of the stock intact. Contrary to belief that the original cowboys were skilled marksmen, most were skilled with a lariat in order to keep their herds together so a community was needed for safety and wellbeing. A common misconception was that the original cowboy looked like cowboys of the movies; Gene Autry, John Wayne, Randolph Scott and the like. In reality the original cowboys were different races and cultures. The cowboy culture began in Mexico with the Vaqueros working through Texas driving cattle up North to capitalize on the higher prices for beef in the heyday from 1866-1886 in the heights of the Civil War. A quarter of the cowboys were African American men riding alongside the Mexican Vaqueros and the stereotypical cowboys we imagine from the movies. Race and culture weren’t considered. A man lived by the code. Gene Autry penned the “Ten Commandments of the Cowboy.” 1. A cowboy never takes unfair advantage. 2. A cowboy never betrays a trust.

3. A cowboy always tells the truth. 4. A cowboy is kind to small children, to old folks, and to animals. 5. A cowboy is free from racial and religious prejudice. 6. A cowboy is helpful and when anyone’s in trouble he lends a hand. 7. A cowboy is a good worker. 8. A cowboy is clean about his person and in thought, word, and deed. 9. A cowboy respects womanhood, his parents, and the laws of his country. 10. A cowboy is a patriot. Rider Relief Fund is founded on these principles and ascribes to govern the organization on these values. The mission that is accomplished couldn’t be successful without having these as daily values. Rider Relief Fund is a community working together to make an impact and make lives better. During this tumultuous time when we have so many voices crying out one against another, let’s take a look at the cowboys and their code. Let’s make a demand of ourselves to live a life centered on hospitality, fair play, loyalty and respect. Let’s Cowboy Up!!

“Great!” owner H.D. Page answered when asked what one word would best describe 58X SweetPro’s Long John. “He’s a great bull. He’s big and long and has the big kicks. He’s got every category that they judge them by. He doesn’t have a lot of tricks, he’s just strong and rank. Long John is a straight up and down bucker, who goes to the left 99% of the time. He’s got size, ability, athleticism and flair, everything a bull man wants in a bucking bull. He does everything you ask him to do and he loves doing it. I’d like a whole herd of Long Johns just like him!” At last year’s PBR Built Ford Tough Series World Finals live television broadcast, Ty Murray, PBR commentator and former nine-time world champion observed, “This bull, if you’re not in the right position, he’s dangerous. You look at this bull, you know he reminds me a lot of Bodacious. If he gets you reared back on the end of your arm, and you’re dead in the middle when he rips you forward, there is a good chance you’re going to meet heads.” Humps N Horns has been featuring the top five contenders for the 2016 PBR BFTS World Champion Bull title over the past few months. We have covered Air Time, SweetPro’s Bruiser, Pearl Harbor and Crossfire. Last, but certainly not least is SweetPro’s Long John, the 2015 and reigning PBR BFTS World Champion bull. Can Long John repeat as champion in 2016? “Everyone is talking about Air Time and he’s a great bull,” H.D. declared. “But don’t count Long John out. I wouldn’t bet against him repeating as the champion. He’s a competitor and he’s going to buck. He knows he’s good, he loves that adrenaline rush and he loves the game. When you crack the slide he is ready to do the deal. Long John really likes the desert and Las Vegas is his town. The water is good and the climate is nice that time of year. Pretty suitable for bulls.” “There are so many variables people need to consider,” H.D. said concerning the PBR World Finals. “The bull riders, the gate man and the judges all enter into the equation. The best bull in the world can get a cold the night before, and that can effect how well he bucks. You don’t ever really know what to expect. Most bulls show their best at about four to five seconds. But to buck it out to the full eight seconds is not always the best deal. It really helps when you have top riders like Fabiano and J.B. riding them. They just seem to bring

out the best in these bulls. Two outs in Vegas will determine the champion.” Six year-old Long John went into the summer break in second place in the standings. He is currently in third place with an average BFTS bull score of 45.50. He’s only been ridden once so far in 2016, by J.B. Mauney for 90.25 points in Oklahoma City back in January. During the BFTS break, this 1,800 pound bovine champion athlete had a busy summer. Long John bucked in the Young Guns Challenge at the J.W. Hart PBR BlueDef Tour event in Decatur, Texas in June. Then in July he bucked in the PRCA events at Belle Fourche, South Dakota, and Vernal, Utah and the Guymon, Oklahoma PBR Touring Pro event. Springfield, Missouri is the next stop for Long John, where he will duel it out with Australian Lachlan Richardson in the 15/15 Bucking Battle. Richardson won the Thackerville, Oklahoma 15/15 Bucking Battle on September 3, with a career-high score of 92.25 on Seven Dust. Long John missed the PBR BFTS events in Nashville, Tulsa and Thackerville after the break. He was suffering from a bloated belly, swollen legs and sore feet due to foundering. “We got a new load of feed in, and it had an unusually high amount of cracked corn,” H.D. explained. “He gets 12 pounds of feed daily, but he’ll eat 25 pounds if you let him. One of our hired hands overfed him and he started having problems. But we consulted with three vets and he’s good now. We gave him medication and I wrapped his legs and trimmed his hoofs. Long John has had issues with his feet and legs since he was a calf. That may have aggravated his condition. I came close to hauling him to the sale barn as a yearling. He just didn’t seem to have much going for him. His legs didn’t seem to fit his body.” “Long John is pretty laid back any more,” H.D. continued. “But he sure didn’t like to have his hoofs trimmed. He whined the whole time. He’s got a split personality, but he’s mostly easy to handle. If you let him go at his own pace, he’ll pretty much go where you send him. But sometimes he might argue with you a little.” Long John spends his time on the Rocking P ranch situated on the

Marchi Overcomes Injuries to Win in Thackerville Look Out Vegas!

By Barbara Pinnella

All professional bull riders suffer ups and downs, whether it is due to fighting their head, their physical injuries, or both. For Guilherme Marchi, it is the latter, as his knee and biceps injuries have been well documented. To the fans who might not know, here is a refresher course of his most recent injuries.

really good bull, (What’s Under Your Hood), and I was 86.50.

While competing at the Calgary Stampede in July of last year he tore the biceps in his right (riding) arm. In an effort to avoid surgery he began wearing a brace on the arm. A short month later in an event in Thackerville he completely tore the MCL and PCL in his left knee but again, after a short break, he returned to the arena in time to ride in the BFTS Finals. It was there that he tore the MCL in his right knee.

This win was made sweeter by the fact that this was Marchi’s first event win in 2016. And topping off that thrill of victory for Guilherme was the fact that his two children were with him. His son J.G., who is eight years of age, and daughter Manuela, 13 were cheering him on from the sidelines.

“When I tore the MCL and PCL in Thackerville the doctor told me that I needed surgery. If I did that it would be eight or nine months before I could ride. If they fix both knees it would be a year. I said that I had to ride in two months, at the Finals. I said that I would work out, stay strong, and get surgery after the Finals.” Marchi still has not had surgery on any of his injuries, and at this point it is not in his plans. But they say the best revenge is success. That is exactly what Guilherme got one year later, when he walked back into the WinStar World Casino the first weekend of this month. He won the first round, placed in the other two, and won the event.

“You know, I think I’m going to finish third or second. I never think I’m gonna finish first, because Kaique, he had a really good bull. And Silvano did too, but he fell off.”

“They were more excited than me,” Marchi told us. “My son, he said, ‘Daddy, you were champion again!’ They are getting so big; it is a lot of fun to ride with my kids there.” If PBR fans watched the PFIWestern.com Invitational in Springfield, they probably noticed that Guilherme was once again injured and did not ride after the second round. Fear not, the injury was not a bad one. In fact, he would have gotten on for Round 3 if allowed.

“Everything came true for me in Thackerville. The first round I drew a really good bull (Losing My Religion) and got 88.75 points. He came around to my hand and finished strong. The second bull (Jungle) gave me 82.50 points. In the short-go I had another chance to draw a

“The bull hit me with his horn on my knee. But I’m OK; I’m ready for next week. It was bad timing. When this happened I told Tandy I can’t get on the 15/15. This year if you don’t get on the 15/15 they don’t let you get on the next day. That’s why I didn’t get on. I am just a little bit sore, and it is a little bit swollen, but I’m good for next week.” Guilherme has another venture, a brand called Marchichaps that currently is producing hats and shirts. The slogan that goes along with that illustrates exactly what the man believes; Never Give Up. He began this in 2015 while he was in the process of doing his rehab in Brazil, but the idea was initiated earlier than that. “A few years ago someone told me that I should use my name to make a brand in Brazil. I said I didn’t know, that I just want to keep my head to ride bulls right now. Last year he talked to me again. We began with the shirts and caps, and it has done really well in Brazil. Pretty soon I want to do jeans and boots. I’m happy with my brand. “I think it is going to be good one day,” Guilherme continued. “When I retire from riding bulls I have to have something to do. I am going to have some of the shirts and caps in Vegas.”

“Everybody is excited for the Finals this year,” Marchi said, “especially in the new arena, even though it will be different. I think I’m gonna try to bring my kids this year. They like it. They like to be with me and see me ride. You never know, but I would like them to come. “I worked so hard at home to continue to ride the bulls and have a good Finals this year. I have lost some weight too, and am getting on some practice bulls at home. It has helped me a lot, physically and mentally.” Which means, look out Vegas! When Guilherme is shows up in that frame of mind, big things happen for him. And with his career, by his own admission, winding down to a matter of one or two more years, the urgency to win another title makes him even more dangerous to his competitors. But I would make a bet in Vegas that if Marchi wins another World title, none of his fellow bull riders would complain. This likable Brazilian has carved out his niche in the sport, and another championship buckle might be just what the doctor ordered.

Speaking of Vegas, things will be different this year for the Finals. For the first time in 17 years, the PBR will move from the Thomas and Mack Center to a different venue, the T-Mobile Arena.

Rubens Barbosa Looking Forward to Another PBR World Finals By Barbara Pinnella

While he might not be as big a household name as some of his Brazilian counterparts, Rubens Barbosa began his stint in the United States on the Built Ford Tough Series (BFTS) in 2011 and made his presence known in a big way. Barbosa won the PBR Rookie of the Year title that year. He not only accomplished that feat, but Rubens finished fourth in the PBR World Finals. He tied for first place with Valdiron de Oliveira in the second round, both posting scores of 90.75. Barbosa then came back with a huge 92.50 ride on Priceless to win Round 5. But as is the unfortunate norm, injuries kept him from maintaining his winning form. In 2012 he suffered a broken leg and shoulder, as well as other injuries. In 2013 and 2014 he concentrated on the Touring Pro Division both here and in Brazil. He did not return to the BFTS until 2015, where he resurfaced at The Iron Cowboy. He rode his first round bull to a good score, but in the second round he suffered a broken ankle, putting him back on the shelf for two events. Luck finally matched his skill, as he won the event in Colorado Springs, breaking his dry spell. Barbosa finished the 2015 season in 22nd place. This year, Rubens is sitting in 21st place, and with only a handful of events left in the season, appears to be headed to another PBR World Finals. He rode 11 of his BFTS bulls before the summer break, and then headed off to Brazil for June and July. While in Brazil, Barbosa rode an amazing 22 out of 24 bulls. He returned to the States for Nashville in August, and is excited at the prospect of another shot to ride at the Finals. “I felt before I went to Brazil I was already riding pretty well,” he told us. “When I went back I was in good physical condition, so I continued to ride well. And mentally I felt good, as well. I still feel the same.” His entire family accompanied him to Brazil, leaving Texas behind for those couple of months.

“The first time we all came to Texas was in 2011. In 2013 we went back to Brazil, and I came back by myself in 2015. But for this year my wife Dani and daughter Yasmin are back here with me.” When Rubens is not riding, he and Yasmin like to do simple things together, such as take walks or go running. They do not live on a ranch like so many others, instead residing in an apartment at the present time. But he frequently goes to friends’ ranches to be around the cattle, even though he does not get on practice bulls during the week. Even though Barbosa does not live on a ranch in Texas, he did grow up on one, and had always wanted to be a bull rider from the time he was young. “I started riding when I was about eight or nine. Growing up on a ranch in Brazil, it was what we did.” Rubens is sponsored by Real Time Pain Relief, and he is thrilled to stand up for his backer. “I really like representing my sponsor, Real Time,” Rubens told us. “I am very thankful for Real Time. It really helps a lot when I’m injured, and I am very happy for that, but I am also very grateful for their sponsorship.” We are looking forward to seeing Barbosa compete at the Finals again this year, and want to wish him the best of luck. We also want to give a big THANK YOU to his daughter Yasmin for getting on the phone and helping with the translation!

UBBI Youth Futurity Series Celebrates it’s 5th Season The United Bucking Bulls, Inc (UBBI) produced it’s first sanctioned bucking bull event in 2011 in Winnie, Texas! Now in it’s 6th season, the UBBI has experienced growth in all areas, but is probably most excited about the UBBI Youth Futurity Series. “It’ really overwhelming for me to see the explosion of our Youth Futurity program,” explained Randy Schmutz, the general manager of the UBBI. “In 2012, we hosted 3 Youth Futurity events with a total o f 43 entries! In 2016, we hosted 6 events with 312 entries! Wow. . . .that’s simply amazing to me!”

shows! We get new kids wanting to enter each year and we have a pretty darn good Youth Scholarship program, too!” The UBBI Youth Scholarship program has awarded $23,000 in educational assistance to 10 different youth members during the 2015 and 2016 seasons! This has been made possible by two major sponsors, James Hogue, the owner of Pull Do Trailers and Rockin’ R Bucking Bulls (David Findley & Chad Ramer). The 2016 Youth Futurity Series concluded in Palestine, Texas on August 2oth with 33 different youth members competing with 45 bulls entered! Kason Arjona from Missouri earned the 1st place buckle with his bull #14-6 Livin the Life posting an 89.25 point score and earned $1923. Finishing a close second, was bull #-16 Pasture Blaster from Blaine Burleson, scoring 88.5 points. The third place finisher was Kirby Rawlinson, with her bull #4124 Coca-Cola Kid with an 87.5 point score. And rounding out the top 4 was a split for 4th/5th place, with bull #409 Can’t Get It Right from Cassidi Porter and bull #415 Turn Me On from Blaine Burleson. Each year the UBBI awards at least $8,000 in performance scholarships based on points. At every youth event, each bull earns a point for each bull it beats. In other words, if there are 45 bull participating the 1st place bull earns 44 points. The second place bull earns 43 points and so on.

Bull #14-6 Livin the Life from Karson Arjona. Photo by Gautreau In fact, the UBBI Youth Futurity Series experienced a 42% increase in participation from 2015 to 2016. Almost 60 different youth members participated in 2016 at 5 regular season events and the Youth Futurity Series Finale with 105 different youth eligible bulls! What’s interesting about these numbers is the fact that the UBBI Youth Futurity rules only allow each member to enter and participate with no more than 2 bulls per member at each competition. The Red River Chute Out UBBI event in Ada, Oklahoma hosted the largest youth futurity with 65 total entries! “We’ve tried hard to give these kids a fair shot and allow ’em all to be competitive,” stated Jimmy Ray, co-owner of the UBBI. “And it

The 2016 Youth Futurity Series Merit Scholarship recipient was Westin Cobb. Westin is a sophomore at Walker High School in Walker, Louisiana. After graduation, Westin plans to attend Louisiana State University (LSU) and pursue a degree in Agri-Business. Westin was awarded a $2,000 scholarship! More than once we’ve all heard the phrase, “. . . .our youth are the future!” We all know it’s true and we can see it in all of our UBBI Youth members!
