THE GOAL

My goal in the front living room and dining space is to create a cohesive, functional, and finished look that is comfortable and inviting, but with a touch of modern, bohemian glamour. The spaces will feel approachable, yet impressive. I will utilize pieces you currently have in addition to making recommendations that will finish the space within a budget knowing that this is not your forever home.

Front Living Room

Side Table

Large, Round Coffee Table

8 x10 Rug

Storage Cabinet

Your front room currently has no specific function; however, with my recommendations, it will be a perfect place for guests to visit AND your daughter to play. Although the layout is more formal, the fabric, shapes, and function of every element in the space is very kidfriendly and accessible. This room will also seamlessly transition to the dining space.

Leather Club Chair

Long, Comfortable Sofa

Anchor the floor with an 8x10 area rug in blue hues. This will cover the carpet, add comfort/layers, and bring in a large pop of color. I recommend purchasing a long, neutral, deep, and modern sofa- unfussy (no tufts or bells and whistles). A sofa like this will be very approachable, take up most of the back wall (for more seating/comfort), and timeless. In front of the sofa, add a large, low coffee table. This will be kid-friendly (low), safe (round), and functional (a lot of surface area for playing, coloring, drinks when hosting guests, etc.).

In the window nook, add a leather chair (at least 32 wide) with some visual interest. Since the sofa is so neutral and straightforward, this chair can stand out a bit more. Additionally, using a leather material will add a textural balance to the room and will be able to withstand a lot of use (kid and guestfriendly).

On the larger wall across from the sofa, add a large wall cabinet for toy, blanket, game storage, etc. You could also mount a television inside if you’d like. This provides use of the vertical he ight in the space and allows you to tuck away smaller items. Above the sofa and beneath each window, add two sconces (either plug-in or hardwired if you’d like to make them more permanent). This will add functional lighting above the sofa and utilize the space well under the window.

Add a side table next to the leather chair for function. You can add a lamp, too, if additional lighting is needed. I recommend the side table be round to add curvature to the space and remain kid-friendly.

Above the sofa and between the two windows, add a piece of art. The one you currently have hanging in your dining room might work well here, actually. If not, look for something with blacks and blues. Minted.com and Dwell.com are great sites for sourcing art as well. On the small wall by the front door, add two pieces of art (or family photographs) one on top of the other vertically to make good visual use of that wall (ex: what’s pictured on the right). For a cleaner look, don’t add any accessories, pillows, blankets, etc. If you’d like to warm it up a bit more, feel free to add a variety of pillows to the long sofa. Etsy, One King’s Lane, and West Elm are great places for sourcing pillows (and I can assist).

One more recommendation to really make the room pop would be to add a chandelier. This is not necessary, but would would add a lot of visual interest, additional lighting, and just a sense of glamour. The room would still look great without this element.

Dining Room

I’d like to keep your Dining Room very clean and simple, but with some feature elements (chairs and lighting). First, we need to add a rug to the floor to anchor the space. I do like the idea of the leopard rug you had previously recommended as leopard can read more as a neutral. You could be more subtle with the gray tones, or go for the saddle color. Your rug should cover a large amount of space (approx. 10x12).

Your light fixture should be the main focal point of the room and should pop off the beautiful white walls. I recommend a large, visually interesting & stand-out chandelier in black, brass, or glass (or a combination).

With all of my chair recommendations, you can utilize your existing table . Since it would be impossible to match the color exactly, I recommend getting a completely different material and color for the chairs to compliment the table. Something in an upholstered blue, leather, metal, etc. These will all also look amazing against leopard.

On the long wall, add one large mirror (or two long mirrors) to emphasize the length of the wall. It will also reflect the light fixture well and anchor the wall (This one from Restoration Hardware is as long as 72). Keep the frame on the mirror clean and simple (black or dark brown). Finally, add a piece of art between the two windows that is a little bit more narrow than what you have there now (vertical as opposed to square or horizontal). Keep it relatively neutral if you get blue (or colorful) chairs. You can use more color in the art print if you select more neutral chairs.

So, what’s next?

Whew! That was a lot of information. Now that you have seen the inspiration/recommendations, soak it all in. Let me know if you have any questions. After processing the information, you have a couple of options. ü Call or e-mail to set up an appointment to discuss your likes/dislikes of the design and how we can move forward together with Hunt & Gather managing the project (we would discuss what items you would like to purchase yourself, what we should be hunting for, budget, and timeline). ü Start working on the room on your own (purchasing items, hunting for things, etc.) and only call me when you need clarification, recommendations, or final styling. Remember, the WHY is more important than the WHAT, so if you don’t like a pillow/lamp/etc. that we recommended, find something with similar lines or a similar purpose (or a cheaper price) and consider purchasing that instead! ü Nothing. This wasn’t what you were looking for, and you would like to discontinue working together. Additional pricing for services would be given at the follow-up meeting that fit your specific needs. Hope you love the design concept! Can’t wait to hear from you!
