Local mum, environmental scientist and artist Elise Asquith has brought her many talents together once again to illustrate, write and publish another beautiful book, this time with the title Our City Newcastle.

Readers may recall a story in 2018 on one of Elise’s previous titles a children’s picture book, A Visit to Blackbutt Reserve.

As a Newcastle Knights fan I love this time of year.

I have a season ticket almost bursting with potential.

A new season has started and we’re full to the brim with hope.

There’s been some off season distractions of course, but some good new signings and some longer term injuries to key players are healing.

As I write this I can report our team acquitted itself well in the opening game of the season last week.

Round 2 is tonight and we’re a pretty good chance there too.

There’s nothing but hope in the air at this point for Knights fans (a.k.a eternal optimists). None of those pesky actual results on the field that have this nasty habit of lessening our hopes of great things as the season marches on.

Depending on how often you clear your letterbox, the Knights will have played another two or even three games by the time you read this.

Which team will show up to Rounds 2,3 and 4?

Will it be the now almost mythical Knights of old, showing real grit and determination when things get tough? Or will it be the Knights of recent seasons that fold like a badly assembled deck chair when the chips are down?

2020 was our best out of the last seven seasons. Sure we faded in the last few weeks and got bundled out unceremoniously in the first week of finals. Albeit briefly we made it to the business end of the season.

Another eight teams in the comp would gladly have swapped their fate for ours.

“Painting is a hobby. I find it peaceful, and it serves as a creative outlet for me.” Elise told The Local.

“The illustrations all have a personal significance to me. They reflect experiences I’ve had with my kids including many visits to Blackbutt Reserve, playing at our local Lambton Park, beach mornings at Merewether Ocean Baths and pram running along Fernleigh Track.”

“Creating illustrations of our city’s famous landmarks and publishing them provides a way of sharing with fellow Novocastrians and visitors alike the beauty of our city and why it is such a wonderful place to live.” Elise added.

The illustrations in Our City Newcastle include Newcastle’s ANZAC Memorial Walk, aerial views of the coastline, harbour and Nobby’s as well as Glenrock Lagoon.

Supermarket supports schools Ritchies IGA appreciates the importance of community, and the role schools play within their communities. As such, the grocer has always been generous with its donations. But about 20 years ago it decided to streamline its charitable contributions and introduce the community benefit card.

St Therese’s Primary School at New Lambton, and New Lambton Public School, are the most recent beneficiaries of the company’s largesse.

Ritchies NSW state manager David Scally says IGA has always handed out donations, but it was a random process.

“It was really irregular,” says Mr Scally. “So, we thought if we had a community card, which has now become an app – we got fancy – the customers could choose where a percentage of their shop went.

That would be a much fairer way to go.

“We had a lot of schools support it, so they would get all their parents to sign up and donate their percentage of shopping to their school, or their footy club, or whatever the case may be. That’s how it all came about 20 years ago.”

St Therese’s and New Lambton Public each received $5000 recently, but this was from the oldfashioned random approach.

“The donations to St Therese’s

and New Lambton Public came about due to having some random money,” says Mr Scally. “It was not part of the community card scheme necessarily. We were given the $10,000 to spend and I asked New Lambton store manager Andrew Taylor what should we do with it?

“We get such great support from the parents and carers from St Therese’s who shop with us all the time. We also receive great support from New Lambton Primary School for the same reason. A lot of the kids who went to the two schools now work here.”

Mr Scally acknowledges the importance of community.

“They support us,” he says.

“We wouldn’t survive without them.

Making spaces

Giving back is ingrained in our DNA.” St Therese’s principal Duilio Rufo says the $5000 donation came as a real surprise.

“It was fabulous news because last year there was very, very little fundraising done in the school,” says Mr Rufo. “In fact, I think the school was lucky enough to raise $1000.”

Mr Rufo says he will talk with school’s executive committee before deciding on how the donation would be spent.

“But I’d like to give the money directly to the kids,” he says. “We could improve our playground area. Get equipment the kids badly need out in the playground.

So that’s where I think we should target.”

I can’t believe that Newcastle Council does not have soap dispensers in public toilets, such as the near new facility in popular Lambton Park.

For goodness sake. Have they forgotten there is a pandemic going on?

As part of my job I do a lot of travelling and even to rural places and they have soap/soap dispensers in public toilets. Councils such as Armidale, Inverell, Gunnedah, Moree etc have soap/soap dispensers.

Get your Dine & Discover vouchers The Dine and Discover program is now open to all local residents.

The scheme is designed to invest some much needed stimulus into the hospitality, entertainment and tourism sectors.

New South Wales residents aged 18 and over can apply for four $25 vouchers. These are broken down into two types. The $25 Dine NSW Vouchers are to be used for dining at restaurants, cafés, bars, wineries, pubs or clubs. These are available for use from Monday to Thursday and cannot be used to purchase alcohol or tobacco products or for gambling and takeaway meals.

There’s also two $25 Discover NSW Vouchers to be used for entertainment and recreation, including cultural institutions, live music, and arts venues. These can be used 7 days a week.

Vouchers can be used at businesses

participating in the scheme, but cannot be used on public holidays.

All vouchers expire on 30 June 2021.

Each voucher can only be used once. If you don’t spend the full $25 when presenting the voucher, the remaining balance is forfeited.

U12s raise bats to McGrath Foundation

While many cricket fans lazed on the couch watching the Australia v India test series over summer, Western Suburbs Junior Cricket Club’s U12s battled it out in their own test series.

The boys played three ‘test matches’ all together. They rolled their own turf pitch, drew teams out of a hat, traded players to even out sides, and played day-long test matches at Kentish Oval.

The boys agreed to make a donation each time they played, raising $600 for the McGrath Foundation.

Seniors artwork exhibition

Thomas’ immigration document lists him as a “builder and wheelwright”, but by the following year in a legal document his occupational description had expanded to “furniture dealer, upholsterer, and undertaker.” In 1887 he married Jennet Davies in Lambton and two years later they purchased a block of land in Pearson Street, for the family home and undertaker’s business.

Thomas Bevan, Undertaker and much more

Thomas Bevan was a man of many pursuits. Born in Camarthenshire in Wales, Bevan emigrated to Jonah Bevan Funerals, Stockton is Australia with an older brother and younger sister in still in operation today 1884 when he was just 22 years of age. They settled in Lambton and soon afterwards their father, mother and nine other siblings, including 13 year old brother However, with three undertakers in Lambton at that Jonah, joined them. time, and a population of just three thousand, the task of tending to the dead was not sufficient to make a living. Bevan had to diversify, as the sign on his house attests. He was also a “cabinet maker, carpenter, joiner” and could be engaged to have “saws set and sharpened” and “glass cut to order”.

After living and working in Lambton for 25 years, Bevan made a complete change in occupation. In 1910 he sold his house and property, and moved to the Richmond River area near Casino to become a dairy farmer. He lived on a number of properties in the area and retired in 1927. He and Jennet celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in Lismore in 1937 Servicing New Lambton, later moved to Sydney where Thomas died in 1941 Lambton and surrounding suburbs… and Jennet in 1953. ➤ Plumbing ➤ Drainage Although Thomas left Lambton in 1910, the Bevan ➤ Gas Fitting ➤ Blocked Drains name remained in Newcastle. It just feels like government is taking from our businesses with the one hand (closing us down, but leaving similar businesses open), then turning around and taking with the other hand too (not eligible for Covid support packages).

When I spoke with my peak industry association, they said they are talking to government. Apparently, government’s response is they don’t want to amend current support, but will consider our response when designing any future support packages.

Don’t they get it? Much more of this and there won’t be a next time for us. We can’t keep surviving shutdown after shutdown, then – to add insult to injury – being disqualified for government support packages.

I am going to hazard a guess that you are in a smaller I am really frustrated. I am a healthcare professional profession. One crucial issue for public policy design is just how hard it is for smaller professions to be heard by government. Unfortunately, generally speaking, the bigger the profession and the larger the business, the better the outcomes from government regulation and legislation.

This is something we were very aware of when I worked in government, designing the law.

Next month’s article will give some more detailed discussion on problems, and solutions, for smaller businesses dealing with bureaucracy.

For now, I suggest you speak to your peak industry association and ask them what you can do to support their advocacy for your industry. Talk to your colleagues in your industry and get them onboard with supporting your peak industry association as well.

Anxious People

Fredrik Backman is a Swedish author most known for his novel A Man Called Ove. Ove. Anxious People is his most recent novel. Fredrik Backman’s specialty is turning the everyday struggles of ordinary men and women into moving and humorous tales.

Although the story line is simple, the characters are complex, and this is not your average hostage drama.

Royal Commission into Aged Care

The Federal Government has now received the 148 recommendations from the Royal Commission. We are expecting to see a significant response by the Government included in the next Federal Budget in early May 2021.

The Royal Commission has laid out a roadmap to transform Australia’s Aged Care system.

Some of the Key Recommendations were:1. Rights-based approach to Aged Care – If accepted this would mean a new Aged Care Act that specified the rights of older people. It would define that people

would get access to services in line with their needs and preferences.

2. Investing in our Workforce – The aged care workforce is key to an older persons experience.

It identified that systemic changes are required to attract and retain a committed, passionate and skilled workforce. This includes increasing the remuneration of staff.

3. Fit for Purpose Funding – Our Government invests about half the international average of Gross Domestic Product that is invested by other OECD countries currently 1.2% of GDP into Aged Care.

Significant funding increases were recommended and a commitment to the universal funding for aged care services. This includes a directive for a very limited waiting time for Home Care Packages after an assessment from the Aged Care Assessment Team.

4. Frameworks that instill confidence – A transformation in the regulation and management of aged care to ensure the quality of care for all older Australians. This could include an independent agency to set aged care pricing and new standards for providers to be accredited against.

Funeral arrangements

Some recent court cases have highlighted the importance of making appropriate funeral arrangements ahead of time and informing your loved ones of your wishes to prevent disputes and unnecessary expense for the estate.

In one matter the two executor daughters of the deceased mother could not agree on the ceremonial arrangements for the funeral and the court was required to make a decision on suitable arrangements. Executors are required to act jointly and if they are not able to alternate executors may be appointed or a court may

make a decision as happened in this matter.

In another Queensland matter the deceased passed away without having a will and therefore no executors were acting. The next of kin were required to decide on an appropriate place for the burial but could not agree.

Again the court was required to make a decision on the most practical location for a burial. Considerable costs were incurred in having the dispute resolved by the court.

It is important to note that if one or more of the executors appointed under a will are the real cause of any dispute a court may order the costs be paid personally by the executor rather than be drawn from the estate.

So how do you make your wishes known? You should certainly let your close relatives know of your wishes in relation to such things as your preference for burial or cremation, location, and ceremonial arrangements.

A person’s wishes in relation to how their body is dealt with can be and are commonly set out in a will. You should of course let the executors know of your wishes and inform them that you have set out your preferences in your will.

The other common manner of making appropriate arrangements is to obtain a funeral plan.

Dogs and rabbits don’t mix!

With Easter just around the corner, let’s talk about pets and the lovely gifts left by the Easter bunny!

Chocolate is toxic to dogs, and though different types of chocolate may have higher or lower amounts of the toxic component (theobromine), if a dog eats any amount it can be dangerous. The darker the chocolate the worse it is, with cooking chocolate having the

highest amount of theobromine, and even white chocolate causing harm to your pet.

When planning Easter Egg hunts, please remember to keep the chocolates out of range for your pets or keep them in a separate area to the festivities. Children may be inclined to share their haul so make sure they know not to give any of their Easter treats to the dog or cat!

Unfortunately, every Easter some pets will eat some chocolate (it’s just too tempting!).

If you find out that your pet has made this mistake, please ring for advice. Depending on the size of your pet and the type and amount of chocolate eaten we may advise you to manage his sore tummy at home or to bring him into us immediately. The first thing we might do is to cause vomiting to get as much chocolate out of his system as possible. Then treatment will depend on how bad the toxicity is.

Some dogs are particularly good at sneakily getting into food they’re not meant to. Keep in mind that sudden vomiting or diarrhoea, lack of appetite, a sore belly and excessive panting can all be signs a dog has eaten some chocolate and hidden the evidence. In the worst cases, chocolate toxicity can cause seizures or death, so if your pet may have eaten any chocolate, please bring him in!

Please stay safe this Easter and remember to keep the chocolate treats for the humans in the household.

How to please your knees What’s wrong with my knees!? Is your knee cracky?

Sharp ’n’ jabby? Like a constant toothache? Soswollen-it-could-drown? Or is it just a grouchy, sore knee that stops you walking, running, doing steps or exercising? If this sounds like your knee - read on.

Here are five winning tips for beating whining knees: 1. Stop squatting. Really. It’s probably not helping.

Squats send 4-5 x your bodyweight through your

knee. So, when your knee is painful, squats may just make your pain worse and this means your muscles don’t work well.

2. Ride a Bike. Bike riding is close to 1.5 x bodyweight load on your knee - so you should get a decent thigh muscle workout without the big pain!

Start small -10 to 15mins and build up slowly.

3. Tape it up. Tape works for lots of different types of knee pain. It’s not a ‘silver bullet’ but it can help reduce pain and this can help you get back to running around with the kids or not looking at a flight of stairs with suspicion.

4. Get a better bum. You don’t need a booty like Kim Kardashian but making your bum strong will help your knees. Why? You need to control your thigh bone movement from your hip joint and the best way to do this is…you guessed it - bum muscles. So essentially better bums = better knees.

5. See a good physio. No hard sell here, just facts.

I’ve treated over 10,000 knees in 20 years as a physio and I get a real buzz from seeing my patients hit their goals and get out of pain and back into what they miss doing.

Anxiety

In 2015, Newcastle Psychology & Health kicked off the NPH Anxiety Clinic. We knew there was a lot of untreated anxiety in the community, and so, we let our GPs know about our specific services for people struggling. Fast-forward to 2021 and we are still seeing many anxiety clients, people who want life to be different and not so fearful. People who have decided they’ve had enough, and don’t want to continue missing out.

Around 2 million Australians currently live with anxiety and just over one in ten struggle with a diagnosable anxiety disorder. Anxiety issues come in a number of different forms including (commonly):

• generalised anxiety, an underlying feeling of personal inadequacy or that things are going to go wrong; • social anxiety, where we avoid people and groups because we feel that others are judging us; • specific phobia eg., flying, needles, dentists, vomiting, dogs, spiders; • obsessive compulsive disorder eg., thoughts, cleaning, checking, counting, ordering; • specific anxiety disorders eg., hair pulling or skin picking.

If you’ve been struggling with thoughts of doom and gloom, or if you’ve been concerned excessively about what you believe people are thinking of you, or if you find yourself just constantly worrying about everything for no apparent reason, then you might be struggling with an anxiety issue and would benefit from some professional assistance. Anxiety issues respond very well to targeted evidence-based treatment.

Many times, individuals understand their own anxiety and cope quite well with it. Others find it annoying and even debilitating. Given that people can change, just check in on yourself to see if your own level of anxiety in an often anxiety-generating world is manageable, or if it is getting in the way of life enough for you to do something about it. I encourage you to seek help if it’s the latter.

A useful reframe

To the mamas and papas who had their adult children move back in when COVID hit. To the parents up in arms over which school to enrol their child in. To the caregivers of the littlie who just got a scary diagnosis.

To the folks of the child who is school refusing. To the exhausted mama who is managing through the double-header days of a newborn and a high energy toddler. To the couple trying to work out how to tell the kids they are separating.

If your best friend was in your shoes, what would you expect of them?

That’s right. Probably much less than you are currently expecting of yourself.

How might you use this reframe as you move through the rest of your parenting day today? Where can you cut yourself some slack and etch out the type of break you would want for your best friend if they had on all that you do?

What standards are you holding for yourself that are unrealistic and how might you adjust those tomorrow?

We have been conditioned to strive strive strive, but that easily racks up on us and renders us zombiedout or as fizzy and yelly as heck. Parenting is hard enough without trying to do it from either of those incapacitated states.

Tech neck

We often see children walking or sitting with their heads down and back curved, slumping over their phones or devices. Prolonged dropping of the chin to chest can cause changes to the neck’s spinal curve, stressing the supporting ligaments, tendons and muscles, resulting in what we refer to as “Tech Neck” or forward head posture.

The consequences of this can include a stiff neck with poor range of motion, headaches, difficulty

concentrating and fatigue.

Regardless of whether it’s for school/study, to connect with friends, play games or catching up on missed TV episodes, this increasing time spent engaged with these devices can have an enormous impact on your child’s posture.

With Children aged 5-16 now spending on average 6.5 hours per day engaged with a screen or digital device, children with poor posture is a common problem.

Good and bad postural habits can be developed as early as 9 years old, so encouraging children to engage in more physical activity and spend less time on their devices is a great place to start on improving their spinal health.

Another simple way is to encourage young children to lay on their tummy while using their devices.

Vitamins

Our bodies need vitamins to stay healthy. Vitamins help body cells work properly, and can also help to treat some health problems. The best source of most vitamins is a healthy diet. Some people also need to take vitamin supplements, but taking more vitamins than your body needs can be harmful.

Ask a doctor, pharmacist, dietitian or naturopath for advice.

Healthy eating

Nutrient Reference Values (NRVs) and Recommended Dietary Intakes (RDIs) are guides to the amounts of vitamins your body needs each day. Most people can get their daily vitamin needs by eating a healthy, balanced diet that includes a lot of different foods.

A healthy, balanced diet means: • eating a wide variety of healthy foods every day • eating mainly vegetables, legumes and wholegrain foods (e.g. wholegrain/wholemeal breads, cereals, pasta, rice, quinoa, couscous) • eating moderate amounts of fruit • eating moderate amounts of lean meat, fish, skinless poultry, eggs, tofu, nuts and seeds • eating moderate amounts of reduced-fat dairy foods (e.g. milk, yoghurt, cheese) • eating small amounts of fat, sugar and salt (e.g. oils, butter, margarine, cakes, desserts, pastries, cream,

chips, pizzas, lollies, chocolate, soft drinks, fruit juice) • drinking enough water every day to satisfy your thirst and to keep your urine ‘light-coloured’ (unless a doctor advises you not to) • having no more than two standard alcohol drinks a day.

The way food is prepared and cooked can reduce its vitamin content. To keep the vitamins in food: • prepare food just before serving • cook vegetables for only a short time (e.g. steam or microwave) • wash and scrub vegetables instead of peeling them • re-use cooking water in gravies, soups and stews leave vegetables in large pieces and do not soak them before cooking.

Vitamin supplements

You may not get enough vitamins in your diet to stay healthy if you have: • a poor diet (e.g. eat a lot of ‘junk’ food) • a diet low in certain foods for health, cultural or religious reasons (e.g. people following a vegan diet) • a need for extra vitamins (e.g. while recovering from illness or surgery, while pregnant or breastfeeding) • a lifestyle that can reduce vitamin levels (e.g. get no sun on your skin, smoke cigarettes, consume a large amount of alcohol, use illegal drugs) • a medical condition that can affect vitamin levels (e.g. coeliac disease, ulcerative colitis, cystic fibrosis, gastrectomy) • medicines that can affect vitamin levels (check with your pharmacist) If you don’t get enough vitamins from your diet, you may need to take vitamin supplements. Vitamin supplements are available as tablets, capsules and liquids. Sometimes, vitamins are best given as an injection. Ask a your pharmacist or doctor for advice.

It is very important to take a vitamin supplement at the dose recommended on the label. Get medical advice first if you want to take more. Taking high doses of some vitamins can increase the risk of side effects.
